"Native Son": A Polemic On the Poverty of the Poor 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Indeed, Richard Wright's "Native Son" is a polemic about what happens to the poor who are impovished by the psychic chain of economic poverty coupled with rascism and class discrimination. Often I am thinking about black life and I am reminded of Bigger's mantra, "I didn't want to kill." And yet he did and many have and, sadly enough, as Wright suggests, it is after the killings that the Biggers of the world find a piece of their own humanity. The question is, thus, this: Does a death compell one to be human? I wonder what Wright would say?In the Sanctuary of a South

Wright is right 5 out of 5 stars.

Richard Wright's America is still here. July, 2008- events of today could be taken from this novel or his short stories.

Editorial Review:

Not often is a black man the protagonist in American literature, but in Native Son, there is fiery, dramatic conflict in the story of Bigger Thomas, the man who wages a war between himself and the outside white world. Wright has given us a dramatic and impassioned look at life in the oppressed Black America.

Tribal ID Helps 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As a descendant of the Native American Choctaw tribe, I was VERY pleased with this book. The illustrations are clear and precisely drawn. The reader receives a lot of inspiration for Native American art and designs. However, of far more value to the reader, the author identifies the designs with various tribes. Naturally, I was particularly pleased to find the highly modernistic looking designs of the Choctaws. I strongly recommend this book to any students of Native Americans or students of art.

I was expecting full size patterns. However there are good
patterns, but will have to be enlarged to use them.

Editorial Review:

Rich selection of authentic Indian motifs adapted from art and artifacts of Indians of the Southwest, the Plains, and the Northwest, as well as Maya and Aztecs. Easily reproducible designs add Native American flair to posters, newsletters, brochures, many other projects.

Everything that comes around goes around. 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I have only read one book by Sun Bear and was facinated by the fact that anyone, Native or not, could find peace by just doing something spiritual like this. I am a member of two Ojibway tribes, and yes, I did grow up on three different reservations in my life so I feel I can speak with confidence on this matter. I do not care if people agree or disagree with the Native religions because they are all different and it is not up to me,or anyone else, to tell you what is native or non-native so if you believe you can find happiness from reading "astrological" points of view from Sun Bear then buy the book because it is better to love and practice something than to practice nothing at all. I would also recommend traveling to a nearby "Rez" for an introduction to religion, and they don't have to be Chippewa like myself or Sun Bear, because I know the best spiritual advise cannot be found in books. To correct a few reviews and from an Anthropological view, the Chippewa, or Ojibway, were not buffalo chasers like the plains natives, but fisherman and farmers from Canada with a HEAVY influence from the French (hows that for a European astrology connection) so please correct your review Apacheman because we, the Chippewa, are woodland indians so how could you know if we kept a calender or not (especially the Apaches being a Mexico indian). Native religions do not hate like others do so please do not give us a bad name because I read your profile and it seems all your reviews were negative. And as far as two bears is concerned I would like to know who named you or what naming ceramony you attended because we all have two lives, the one everybody see's and the one we hide(naming yourself does not constitute an indian name).

Editorial Review:

When the late Sun Bear first had his vision of the Medicine Wheel, he did not know how far-reaching that vision would be. Millions of people around the world have read the Medicine Wheel books, and untold numbers have participated in Medicine Wheel ceremonies to honor and heal the Earth Mother. Sandra Stanton's series of paintings beautifully illustrate the system of Earth Astrology that invites us back into harmony with the earth. Traditional Earth Astrology wisdom accompanies the paintings. In this calendar you will learn more about the positive and healing qualities of people born under, or passing through, the twelve different moons. The Medicine Wheel teachings help us better appreciate the diversity of all Earth's people and find our own special place in the sacred web of the natural world.

Editorial Review:

This remarkable book introduces us to four unforgettable Apache people, each of whom offers a different take on the significance of places in their culture. Apache conceptions of wisdom, manners and morals, and of their own history are inextricably intertwined with place, and by allowing us to overhear his conversations with Apaches on these subjects Basso expands our awareness of what place can mean to people.

Most of us use the term sense of place often and rather carelessly when we think of nature or home or literature. Our senses of place, however, come not only from our individual experiences but also from our cultures. Wisdom Sits in Places, the first sustained study of places and place-names by an anthropologist, explores place, places, and what they mean to a particular group of people, the Western Apache in Arizona. For more than thirty years, Keith Basso has been doing fieldwork among the Western Apache, and now he shares with us what he has learned of Apache place-names—where they come from and what they mean to Apaches.

"This is indeed a brilliant exposition of landscape and language in the world of the Western Apache. But it is more than that. Keith Basso gives us to understand something about the sacred and indivisible nature of words and place. And this is a universal equation, a balance in the universe. Place may be the first of all concepts; it may be the oldest of all words."—N. Scott Momaday

"In Wisdom Sits in Places Keith Basso lifts a veil on the most elemental poetry of human experience, which is the naming of the world. In so doing he invests his scholarship with that rarest of scholarly qualities: a sense of spiritual exploration. Through his clear eyes we glimpse the spirit of a remarkable people and their land, and when we look away, we see our own world afresh."—William deBuys

"A very exciting book—authoritative, fully informed, extremely thoughtful, and also engagingly written and a joy to read. Guiding us vividly among the landscapes and related story-tellings of the Western Apache, Basso explores in a highly readable way the role of language in the complex but compelling theme of a people's attachment to place. An important book by an eminent scholar."—Alvin M. Josephy, Jr.

Editorial Review:

Indian Bead-Weaving Patterns is written for beginning and advanced beaders. It contains over 200 instructional illustrations and photographs of 47 beadwork pieces. Emphasis is on the use of traditional Native American beading techniques. The major portion of this book covers chain-weaving patterns, examples of which include multiple strands, 6-bead and 8-bead daisy chains, "Ogalala Butterfly," ladder weaves, "Peyote Stitch," fancy tubes, "spider" designs, "Apache Leaf," "Zig-zag" variations, 5- and 8-bead diagonals, "Potawatomi Weave," "Wide Net," "Lakota Chain," beaded braids, and beaded dolls. Also included in this book are notes on supplies, knots and threading and an illustrated section on How to Make and Use an Indian Bead Loom. With this new, enlarged edition, come two additional sections, TRIANGLE BASE has illustrated directions for making this very popular pattern for pendants and ear-drops; and BEAD EMBROIDERY includes detailed instructions for Rosettes and Applique work. Additional descriptions and illustrations are also given for other patterns of sewn beadery. Expanded to 80 pages in 1989, reprinted in 1993, this has been the best introduction to Native American beadworking since 1971.

Shaman: The Paintings 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 19 people found this review helpful.

We always did want to see the spirit of a tree. Susan Seddon Boulet did & brings us every detail, enchanting our eyes & entrancing our minds. This artist has a host of calendars & greeting cards to touch the heart, uncurl our modern neutered spirits & fill our eyes with affection, calm & starlight. Lovely & profound.

Shaman's: Soul Journey 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

There is very little I don't own of Susan Seddon Boulet's work in calendar, card or book form. Shaman is an exemplary achievement and work of love done by a woman of profound talent.

I met Susan at a workshop in Rhinebeck, N.Y and was instantly struck by her inner glow. The radiance of a woman who is grounded and knows the path of a Shaman. How better to portray her inner beliefs than through her art work?

The Shaman's Paintings are a testament not only to a spiritual path but also to one of our finest American women artists.

The path of a Shaman is best expressed by someone like Susan Seddon Boulet as she weaves ancient myth and folklore into beautiful tales on canvas.

A must have.

Editorial Review:

Susan Seddon Boulet uses subtle colors and a unique fusion of forms to reflect the magical and spiritual powers of shamans. In native cultures around the world, shamans are healers who traverse the boundaries between the everyday world and the spirit realm.

Boulet's paintings delicately interweave images of woman, man, and beast with elements of myth and mysticism, evoking a visceral understanding of shamanism. This collection of over seventy-five images is accompanied by quotes from shamans from various cultures.

Vague rehash of better books 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"A Guide to Manufacturing Native Replicas with Modern Tools" might be a more accurate title. Nothing new offered here, just skimpy information that lacks many details and has the feel of material skimmed from other, more informative books. Birch clearly has experience with some of the skills yet his ability to translate knowledge to paper is lacking. Someone who knows what they are doing can fill in the often large gaps in the information, but then they don't need the book, do they? I always look for the one piece of new information that merits the purchase of a book and was hard pressed to find one here.

almost great 4 out of 5 stars.

I got this book as a present and I really enjoyed it. I loved the parts about bow and arrows and I'm excited to start making my own. The only thing that I thought it lacked was it didn't have all the Native American tools that I was interested in making but over all I enjoyed the book and am glad that I recieved it.

Editorial Review:

In the 1960s and 70s, the notion of American Indian art was
turned on its head by artists who fought against prejudice and
popular clichés. At the forefront of this revolution was Scholder
(1937 2005), whose portrayals of Native American life
combined realism, tragedy, and spirituality with the genres of
abstract expressionism and pop art. Published to coincide with
an exhibit at the Smithsonian s National Museum of the
American Indian in New York City and Washington, D.C., this
retrospective features hundreds of works from Scholder s
career as a painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Essays explore
Scholder s major themes humanity s place in the natural
world, ancient mythical beings, women, Christian iconography,
the millennium, and the afterlife as well as Scholder s decades
of prominence in the art world, his role in the Native American
community, and his myth-shattering depictions of the realities
of Native American life. A fascinating figure who fearlessly
took on his own contradictions and those of his times,
Scholder continues to generate passionate discussion today.
Fritz Scholder: Indian/Not Indian offers a lively, insightful
exploration of his place in twentieth-century American art
history as a colorist, expressionist, and figurative painter.

Beadwork Designs 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book to use for applique designs. I craft and bead cradleboards and the designs really helped towards my ideas. The designs vary in region which also helps. The designs are large, simple to use and she even numbers them for the specific colors to use if you choose. I am very satifsfied with Stanley-Miller's book.

Book needs more color photographs 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As a person who pieces quilts and does beadwork, I usually see an actual quilt or a piece of beadwork OR a color photograph of an item. After viewing an actual item or a photo and appreciating the colors and the pattern, I then decide if I want to make it. While this book has 50 charts for bead weaving and 21 patterns for applique, there are only four pages of photographs showing a total of about 26 items. I was dissappointed that there wasn't a color photo for every design in the book. People want to see what a finished product will look life before taking the time and effort to make it.

Editorial Review:

Start-to-finish guide enables even beginners to create beautiful beadwork designs for many craft uses.

Not all "Northwest Coast" 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Great, yet another book about "Northwest Coast" and "Coast Salish" art that ignores the art of the Salish Indians of Western Washington. Ever since J. E. Standley flooded the Seattle tourist market with the fake Kwakiutle artwork, fake totem poles, and other hybrids of art forms from the northern coast Salish tribes, the art forms that are indigenous to our tribes here in western Washington have been all but forgotten, brushed aside by authors who chase the market with books that pretend to deal with all "of the Northwest Coast" but in reality ignore anything south of the 49th Parallel.

Encyclopedia of Haida 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book if you are looking for explanations of the history of the Haida artwork and drawings. It also includes many examples of the artwork and is easy to read and understand for all ages.

Beautiful and Informational 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Interesting and well written, this book has been not only a wonderful source of entertainment but a good reference for this native art style. Every image is a beautiful example of the style, and covers several medias (print, paint, clothing and carving). Stewart spends time covering all the basics, from the rudimentary design principles, to the myths and symbolism of the many animals and figures represented by the examples. Differences between tribal styles are also covered, each group accompanied by several wonderful examples of the art. This book is a great starting place for anyone wanting to study this art form, whether it be primarily cultural or artistic.
