Editorial Review:

A Guidance Approach for the Encouraging Classroom, now out in its 4th edition, can function easily as a primary reference for professionals or in classes that address group management, the learning environment, child guidance, child behavior, challenging behavior, conflict management, and peace education topics. New enhancements to this edition include the concept of challenging behavior, active classrooms, practical discussions of conflict management, and many new anecdotes and case studies. The age range addressed in the text is 3-8 years (pre-school to primary grade) and the book is divided into three parts. Part one looks at explores the foundation of guidance in early childhood education and covers such key concepts as conventional discipline versus guidance, mistaken behavior, the guidance tradition, and innovative theories about child development with guidance. Part two focuses on building an encouraging classroom. The reader starts off learning about the organization of the encouraging classroom, as well as key elements of an encouraging classroom including daily schedule, routines, use of thematic instruction, and working with parents. Leadership communication is also addressed in this section, and focuses on the importance of communication with staff, children, and parents. Tips and techniques are shared. Part three addresses problem solving and challenging behavior in the encouraging classroom. It includes practical illustration for how to use and teach conflict management and covers the “five-finger-formula.” Non-traditional families are covered and the effect of societal violence in the classroom is looked at, including bullying. This experience-based book that includes lots of real life anecdotes lends itself to learning and will allow the professional to make the shift from conventional classroom to developmentally appropriate guidance.

Editorial Review:

"Why do grown-ups have to take over everything?" This innocent question from acclaimed journalist and international bestselling author Carl Honoré's son sparked a two-year investigation into how our culture of speed, efficiency, and success at all costs is damaging both parents and children. When the impulse to give children the best of everything runs rampant, parents, schools, communities, and corporations unwittingly combine forces to create over-scheduled, over-stimulated, and overindulged kids. The mere mention of potty-training, ballet classes, preschool, ADD, or overeating is enough to spark a heated debate about the right way to raise our children. The problem is that despite the best intentions of all involved, the pressure to manage every detail of our children's lives from in utero through college is overwhelming.

Delivering much more than a wake-up call, international bestselling author Carl Honoré interviews experts in Europe, North America, and the Far East, talks to families around the world and sifts through the latest scientific research. Not only do we see the real dangers of micromanaging children, but Honoré also shows us an emerging new movement inspiring many to slow down and find the natural balance between too little and too much. Blending the finest reportage, intellectual inquiry, and extraordinary true stories, Under Pressure is the first book to challenge the status quo by mapping out an alternative to the culture of hyperparenting that is presently pushing children and their parents to the brink.

A Must for Parents with ADHD kids 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent reference for any parent with children having ADHD. It covers so much information, and provides actual ideas and behavior modification plans to start on immediately. Going through the exercises is also very helpful in helping parents understand more clearly the difficulties they are experiencing with their children, and what behaviors they should try to eliminate, which need to be ignored, etc. The book was fairly objective in regards to providing the different treatment options available for ADHD. It should be read by parents of children both on and/or off medication, so that a good solid behavior modification plan get get into place.

Editorial Review:

For teachers, counselors and parents, this comprehensive new resource is filled with up-to-date information and practical strategies to help kids with attention deficits learn to control and change their own behaviors and build the academic, social, and personal skills necessary for success in school and in life. The Kit first explains ADD/ADHD behavior, its biological bases and basic characteristics and describes procedures used for diagnosis and various treatment options. It then details a proven set of training exercises and programs in which teachers, counselors and parents work together to monitor and manage the child's behavior to achieve the desired results.

A thoughtful, practical, down-to-earth guide 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Written by licensed psychologist and family & marriage therapist Thomas S. Greenspon, Ph.D., What to Do When Good Enough Isn't Good Enough: The Real Deal on Perfectionism is a guide written especially for young people, preteens and teenagers about what perfectionism is and learning how to deal with it. What to Do When Good Enough Isn't Good Enough emphasizes that perfectionism isn't just wanting to do well - it's an obsessive fear of performing less-than-perfect in any way, and is always harmful. Perfectionism can and often does interfere with the necessary hard work and learning process involved in undertaking any task; for example, a perfectionist might obsessively worry about a book report so much that he or she turns it in late (or not at all!) because too much time was wasted trying to write it perfectly. A thoughtful, practical, down-to-earth guide, enthusiastically recommended for grade and high school library shelves.

Editorial Review:

Are you afraid to try new things because you might not be good at them? Are you scared to speak up because you might say something stupid? Do you get really upset when people criticize you? Everyone feels unsure of themselves sometimes. If you feel that way a lot, this book can help.

Disheartening news for future therapists 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 35 people found this review helpful.

Although I have not yet used cog-B interventions when working with children or adolescents, I was ready to be "wowed" by the information put forth by this book. However, the information that was conveyed was very disappointing. In the sections that dealt with externalizing and internalizing disorders, the gist of the information that was presented was that while cog-B tools often have the potential to be helpful, the research has not resulted in very inconsistent results. Therefore, the research puts into question both the efficacy of cog-B and point of using cog-B in the first place. Another fault of this book is that the chapter authors often point out aspects that are important to take into consideration such as the influence of developmental milestones and the family on a child, but then they fail to elaborate on these aspects.

Editorial Review:

Revised and expanded with six entirely new chapters, the third edition of this authoritative volume presents effective cognitive-behavioral approaches for treating the most frequently encountered child and adolescent disorders. Leading scientist-practitioners have contributed fully updated chapters on aggression, anger, ADHD, depression, anxiety disorders, and developmental issues specific to working with adolescents. New chapters cover obsessive/n-/compulsive disorder, eating disorders, reactions to disasters, sexual abuse, suicidality, and psychotherapy process issues. The latest empirical findings and evidence-based clinical techniques are integrated throughout this outstanding clinical resource and text, and many new case illustrations have been added.

I wish I could send this book to every parent-to-be 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

The arrival of this book is great news! This is the long-awaited tenth-anniversary edition of Dr. Chamberlain's 1988 classic, Babies Remember Birth. In paperback format and enriched with a new last chapter, this book has the potential to revolutionize the way we look at babies, both before and after birth. Part I is filled with "user-friendly" information about the mind and abilities of newborns, as well as a thorough look at their development before birth. Parts II and III present evidence that babies do remember birth and are very much aware of the people around them at that time. There are many amazing stories of labor and birth, from the baby's point of view. As Dr. Chamberlain writes, "Birth memories indicate that babies have an identity of their own; their parents don't give it to them. They act mindfully and build experience around a central core of self." The new last chapter is worth the price of the book all by itself. Dr. Chamberlain writes compellingly about the newborn's sensitivity, awareness, and vulnerability. He emphasizes the importance and power of the infant-and-parent connection during pregnancy and after birth. When the information in this book becomes common knowledge, we will look at our children with new respect and understanding.
