Going overboard 2 out of 5 stars.

I took a general psych course at college this past summer, where we used Wayne Weiten's "Psychology: Themes & Variations". Half-way into the term, health problems conspired to force my withdrawal. Lather, rinse, repeat; new semester, new book (of course) - Myers' 8th edition of "Psychology". This gives me "special" insight into two vastly different approaches to the teaching of the science of psychology. Whereas Weiten's approach was Words, Facts, Reinforcement, Myers' approach seems merely to be Words, Words, Words.

A good example of the differences between the two can be found in their descriptions of psychology's founder, Wilhelm Wundt. With Weiten, Wundt comes off as a figure in abstract. Myers, however, introduces him thus:

"...on a December day in 1879, in a small room on the third floor of a shabby building at Germany's University of Leipzig. There, two young men were helping an austere, middle-aged professor, Wilhelm Wundt, create an experimental apparatus."

What, that's all? What was the barometric pressure? Was it sunny, cloudy, or snowing outside? Was the floor made of tile or wood? And, please, I must know: were either of his grad students having a bad hair day? The history of psychology lies in the balance.

His description of Wundt might seem fascinating, but keep in mind that this book is 772 pages of similarly irrelevant asides. It grows tedious and even hazardous to your learning. Such verbose descriptions of historical figures in psychology serve to distract from the main subject - the science of psychology itself. Furthermore, I am an unreformed outliner. I've found that the best way for me to strengthen my learning and understanding of a subject is to outline the text. But, while Weiten's text seemed specifically designed to make that easy, Myers' approach makes it practically impossible.

Both books are thoroughly up-to-date, and both are amply filled with the staples of modern texts: pictures, charts, diagrams, etc. But Myers lacks what Weiten has in spades: review. Every chapter in Weiten has 4-5 "Concept Checks": brief quizzes reinforcing your understanding of the concepts under consideration. The end of every chapter has a "Practical Learning" section and a "Critical Applications" segment, as well as a thorough, 2 page quiz and review of the chapter. For review, Myers has about 5 questions at the end of the chapter and a list of important terms - and that's it. I think psychology - the subject under study, after all - has pretty much settled the debate over which is the better approach to learning.

I am not totally flaming Myers, however. The man has a clear grasp (and love) of his subject. Some people may even find his approach useful. My own personal experience, however, is to prefer that texts be texts and avoid the distracting verbal diarreah. My astronomy text, for example, took a fairly spartan approach to the subject (by modern standards, anyway). But I found that the text, combined with Timothy Ferris's "Coming of Age in the Milky Way" was a perfect approach to my understanding and retention - far better than if the two had somehow been combined.

Editorial Review:

David Myers’s Psychology is a textbook like no other—always fresh, always introducing effective new tools for teaching and learning, and always attuned to the fascinating ways that new research can shape the introductory psychology course. The new Eighth Edition is vintage Myers. It redefines excellence for an introductory psychology textbook, raising the standard with its expanded emphasis on diversity and gender issues, its incorporation of new frontiers in research studies in such areas as neuroscience and cognition, new learning features, and its expanded media/supplements package.

Myers continues the tradition of previous editions of bonding psychological science with a broad perspective that engages both the mind and the heart.

Editorial Review:

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory—known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")—holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.

At the time of Frankl's death in 1997, Man's Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey by the Library of Congress and the Book-of-the-Month Club that asked readers to name a "book that made a difference in your life" found Man's Search for Meaning among the ten most influential books in America.

Born in Vienna in 1905 Viktor E. Frankl earned an M.D. and a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna. He published more than thirty books on theoretical and clinical psychology and served as a visiting professor and lecturer at Harvard, Stanford, and elsewhere. In 1977 a fellow survivor, Joseph Fabry, founded the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy. Frankl died in 1997.

Harold S. Kushner is rabbi emeritus at Temple Israel in Natick, Massachusetts, and the author of several best-selling books, including When Bad Things Happen to Good People.

William J. Winslade is a philosopher, lawyer, and psychoanalyst at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston.

Basic, solid easy to understand test book.
The only thing negative is that's a bit expensive. I guess because it's a new edition.
I recommend this book.

This book is everything you ever wanted to know about therapy from an expert. It covers various approaches in therapy without judgement. Every therapist should have a copy and every student should be using it as a textbook during their studies. It's easy reading and full of insight.

Editorial Review:

Develop your own counseling style using Corey's bestselling THEORY AND PRACTICE OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY. You will see the major theories of counseling (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist and, and postmodern approaches) as they are used in practice through a case study focused on one client, "Stan." The case of "Stan" appears in each chapter so you can see how the theory presented in that chapter informs therapeutic decision-making. The new "Theory in Practice: The Case of Stan" DVD is an extension of the text. "At a Glance" charts pinpoint the major differences between theories in areas such as multicultural focus, basic philosophies, and limitations.

Editorial Review:

Dr. James W. Kalat's BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY is the best selling text in the market because of its extremely high level of scholarship, clear and occasionally humorous writing style, and precise examples integrated throughout the text. Throughout all nine editions, the goal has been to make biological psychology accessible to psychology students, not just to biology majors and pre-meds. The goal has also been to convey the excitement of the search for biological explanations of behavior. Kalat argues that biological psychology is "the most interesting topic in the world," and this text convinces many students. Try-it-yourself activities in the book and on-line help illustrate phenomena and procedures described in the text. Accuracy, currency and a clear presentation style have always been the trademark signature of this text and this Ninth Edition has taken these qualities to the next level. An extremely skilled teacher, Dr. Kalat has written a text that not only speaks to today's students but to their professors as well. Accuracy, currency and a clear presentation style have always been the trademark signature of this text and this Ninth Edition has taken these qualities to the next level.

This book saved my soul 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Verbal abuse kills your soul one word at a time. This book helped me realize that no amount of explaining on my part would ever get through to my husband how his words damaged me and others. After 20 years, it hit me that he will never change. Please realize that verbal abusers can be women as well as men (the author doesn't emphasize this enough). All in all, this is the most helpful book I have ever read. It saved my life and my soul.Too Good for Her Own Good: Searching for Self and Intimacy in Important Relationships

Editorial Review:

Are you now, or have you ever been, in relationships with family, friends, or mates who have been verbally abusive? Is your happiness with someone you love continually threatened by interactions that continually undermine your self-esteem? Do you feel trapped in a relationship that keeps decaying in a downward spiral of overt or passive-aggressive abuse?

If so, this book could be your life raft, either carrying you toward repair of the existing relationship or the effects of past relationships or offering liberation from your current confusion. Its practical approach can help clear your head and possibly change your life. The only criticism that I and other readers have is that the author assumes verbal abuse is almost always directed by males toward females, which, in my experience and that of others I know, is not necessarily the case. Highly Recommended.

"The Standard Text" for Family Therapy 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Nichols work, now in the 8th edition, is a seminal work in family therapy. This new edition, has some extra-features, which make it even more desireable than the 7th. It is more sympathetic to the postmodern therapies (solutions-focused, narrative), which I either practice or have been heavily influenced by. Nichols work is a great way to "break in" to this field as he survey the field, its developments, and various schools of thought. Better yet, he also includes a "recommended reading" list after each chapter of other seminal works in the field.

The danger of this book lies not with it or the author, but rather the student. Like all good survey books, contemporary master's level students often think they now can "go forth and heal" on this knowledge alone. One of my greatest gifts I received from seminary training was this: "Gents (we were all men), this class isn't the last word on this subject. This is the beginning of a life-long journey in this area."

Nichols book, when used in academia, is best seen in this light. Students need to know this is a secondary source which is to focus their reading of primary sources - you need to read Minuchin, Haley, White, de Shazer, Berg, Johnson, and Whitaker for yourselves!

As an introduction to the field, you will find none better.

I enjoy reading this book for my masters class. It is written for easy reading but is not dumbed down. Very thought provoking.

Editorial Review:

Up-to-date and comprehensive, this practical best-selling text now available with an online personalized study plan, helps students learn how to deal with and apply ethical standards. The authors provide readers with the basis for discovering their own guidelines within the broad limits of professional codes of ethics and divergent theoretical positions. They raise what they consider to be central issues, present a range of diverse views on these issues, discuss their position, and provide readers with many opportunities to refine their own thinking and to actively develop their own position. The authors explore such questions as: What role do the therapist's personal values play in the counseling relationship? What ethical responsibilities and rights do clients and therapists have? And, what considerations are involved in adapting counseling practice to diverse client populations?
