Editorial Review:

Speaking directly to the current generation of counselors, The Gift of Therapy lays out simple suggestions that blend personal experience with professional objectivity. This is a book that will remind you why you entered the field in the first place. With tips on avoiding diagnosis (except for insurance purposes), when to disclose personal information, and why it's important to leave time between patient appointments, the recommendations are aimed at therapists, but they may be useful to patients who want to know what to expect from their counselors. Some references to the DSM-IV may be a little over the layperson's head, but in general the writing is clear and understandable for lay readers as well as professionals.

Each chapter is just a few pages long, a nice format for busy folks whose reading time occurs in snippets. A single topic is addressed in each chapter, and author Irvin Yalom doesn't waste any time in getting to the point. Many of the sections revolve around balancing the "magic, mystery, and authority" that come with the job of freeing your clients of their reliance on you.

From when to offer an occasional hug to finding the perfect time for deeper questioning, Yalom's experienced observations will help you achieve even greater professional effectiveness while avoiding some of the more obvious traps in this HMO-directed age of mental health care. --Jill Lightner

Very Interesting 5 out of 5 stars.

I liked this book very much. I got the book for a college class that I was taking and I found myself reading more than what was assigned to me by the teacher. The chapters flow together and you can even skip around if you want too. I refer to the book quite often. I am a biological science major and it tackles all the issues such as nuture vs. nature and even has a whole chapter devoted to the biology of Psychology. The book has many colorful pictures and test such as visual test. I recomend this book for anyone entering the helping profession.

Editorial Review:

This book presents a scientific, accurate, and thorough overview of the essential concepts of psychology in engaging language that the average reader can easily comprehend. Topics include the science of psychology, the biological basis of behavior, sensation and perception, states of consciousness, learning, memory, cognition and mental abilities, motivation and emotion, life-span development, personality, stress and health psychology, psychological disorders, therapies, and social psychology. For counselors, behavioral analysts and others in various related psychology fields.

Editorial Review:

The Seventh Edition of Wayne Weiten's popular text, PSYCHOLOGY: THEMES AND VARIATIONS, continues to offer students a unique survey of psychology with three distinct goals: to show both the unity and diversity of psychology's subject matter; to illuminate the process of research and its intimate link to application, and to make the text challenging to think about and easy to learn from. Weiten achieves these goals through a number of distinctive features. Integrative themes-including empiricism, theoretical diversity, sociohistorical contexts, multifactorial causation, cultural heritage, heredity and environment, and subjectivity of experience-are woven throughout the text to provide connections among the different areas of research in psychology. A unique end of chapter section, "Reflecting on the Chapter's Themes," ties together the key themes most relevant to each chapter, and shows links across chapter content. The book's dynamic, teaching-oriented illustration program further enhances these themes. Featured Studies, Personal Applications, and Critical Thinking Applications provide students with unprecedented opportunities to see research methods in action, to understand the practical side of psychology, and to develop important critical thinking skills. Weiten reinforces concepts through periodic in-chapter Concept Checks and an end of chapter practice quiz in every chapter. At the same time, he presents topics in a hierarchical manner, giving students handles they can use to prioritize concepts within the chapter.

This book is written in a personal format that pulls the reader in as being personally coached by two professors. While there may be dissertaions for dummy's, doctoral students are not dummy's and should use this book to assist with the doctoral journey.

Editorial Review:

Dissertations and Theses From Start to Finish provides the nuts and bolts needed to put together a thesis and a dissertation. This publication helps graduate students in psychology and related fields plan the thesis and dissertation process from beginning to end. It is designed for students to apply what they have already learned in graduate school to the practical conduct of research.

child development and education book review 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was happy with the book. It arrived quickly and in great condition. My only issue is that it did not have the 3 CD's that come with new edition. I emailed customer service with my complaint and they sent me another book, but still without the CD's. After some investigation they figured out that the book they are advertising does not come with the CD's. I was dissappointed :(

Must reading for anyone who treats others for a living! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Knapp and VandeCreek achieved something almost impossible in the field of ethics instruction. They wrote a book that was informative and interesting to read! Ethics has long been a fascinating intellectual topic; however, it has rarely been a good read. With an informal and clear style and great examples it is enjoyable as well as an important book. I was pleased at the orientation- "A Positive Approach." Unfortunately too many use "ethics" with a punitive super ego. This book however shows us how we can stay out of trouble, not harm and be better at what we do. It is valuable for all in the helping professions.

Do not buy until you have read the APA ethics code online for free 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm not going to say that this book is a waste of time. If you are taking an ethics course and want something in writing to cite from, this is certainly a good book for that. My advice is: Do not buy until you have read the APA ethics code online for free. The APA puts its ethics code online for free, just type in 'APA ethics' into google. You will get a much better and concise description for 100% free. This book is not a manual, but rather, as a commentary of a guide of APA ethics. I gave it three stars because it is not neccessary to function as a Clinician - it is more like an supplemental guide for learning ethics.

Editorial Review:

Provides information on using the positive ethics approach in clinical practice. Details a five-step model for resolving ethical dilemmas, including sketches of ethical and questionable behavior. Covers topics such as multiple relationships, informed consent, fees and financial issues, and psychologists in special situations. Softcover.
