Very Useful 5 out of 5 stars.

At first the title of the book may appear daunting, but a look inside reveals a very well written book. Takes confusing topics and helps explain them in ways that a student will understand. I found it incredibly useful in my course!

The book was clean, covered and just what I asked for. The biggest thing was that I didn't have any shipping problems with this order.

Methods in Behavioral Reserach with PowerWeb 3 out of 5 stars.

I thought the content was going to help me understand better the hard copy version and test me on the information. It did explain some things better, but it didn't test me on the hard cover book. So, there's really no point in buying this one if you have the hardcover. Oh well.

Editorial Review:

With its concise and strategic approach to decision making, Methods in Behavioral Research by Paul C. Cozby continues to gain in popularity among instructors and students alike. Building on a strong foundation of pedagogy and well-chosen examples, the ninth edition incorporates learning objectives, new graphics and activities to increase student involvement, and an updated appendix on writing research reports as well as making poster presentations.

Very informative....... 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

but very boring too! Actually, that's not completely true, it's just the first few chapters that are excruciatingly boring, but once you get past all the introductory material, it's quite informative. I'm reading this right now for my graduate course in experimental design, so I most likely found the first few chapters as boring as I did because I already knew the stuff. Although some pictures would be nice, and I'm talking about more than just the illustrations that they use to...uh... "illustrate" different experimental designs, it's nice that there's not a bunch of fluff to sort through looking for the information that is actually important. It's a well written and pretty easy to comprehend must have for those of in the wacky world of experimental studies.

Editorial Review:

This long awaited successor of the original Cook/Campbell Quasi-Experimentation: Design and Analysis Issues for Field Settings represents updates in the field over the last two decades. The book covers four major topics in field experimentation:

  • Theoretical matters: Experimentation, causation, and validity
  • Quasi-experimental design: Regression discontinuity designs, interrupted time series designs, quasi-experimental designs that use both pretests and control groups, and other designs
  • Randomized experiments: Logic and design issues, and practical problems involving ethics, recruitment, assignment, treatment implementation, and attrition
  • Generalized causal inference: A grounded theory of generalized causal inference, along with methods for implementing that theory in single and multiple studies

Study guide 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have not read this book, but I caution other shoppers that I believe this is the study guide to the main text and not a paperback edition of the original. I'm not sure about this, but the price matches those on other web sites for the paperback edition of the study guide (which bears the same name). Be careful.

Other Reviewer Is Not Entirely Correct - These Reviews Show Up On All Editions Of The Textbook and Study Guides 5 out of 5 stars.

I believe the other reviewer got confused about Amazon's listings.

Also, when buying from Marketplace 3rd party sellers here on Amazon, BUYER BEWARE. I am an Amazon Marketplace seller, and I see all the time other sellers listing older out-of-date textbook editions on the new edition listing page, Instructor books on the Student textbook listing page, workbooks on the textbook listings--probably in order to get their product on the better selling/higher priced Amazon page. PLEASE always read seller's description and also the feedback comments. If it isn't clearly stated what you are buying and the exact condition, ask the seller.

Another thing, these same reviews (including mine) will show up on all Amazon's listings for the different textbook and study guide editions of this book. Amazon needs to fix where reviews show up, so it won't confuse customers or mislead them.

By the way, I had the 5th edition textbook and Amazon's listing description for the book is correct.

This is so accurate it's scary! 5 out of 5 stars.

Though I do consider myself spiritual, I do not subscribe to numerology, astrology or any of the other "ologies" for that matter. I have to admit though, there is something to this book. I picked this up in my local bookstore and thumbed through it just for fun. I had to buy it when I read my own life path description (which you discover by adding up all the digits in your birth date)! I don't know how it works but this book nailed me! I am quite aware of what my strengths and weaknesses are (ie, issues) and this book described them in great detail and provided wonderful insight in to how best to overcome and/or enhance those gifts/challenges. As the author mentions many times, our greatest potential is often our greatest challenge as well. My friends and relatives have also found themselves in their life path descriptions, though albeit reluctantly. We are always reluctant to embrace those things that we fear the most and for me I know that what I fear is also my greatest talent. Hey, nobody said life was supposed to be easy! This book can at the very least serve as a lovely reminder of what we know we need to focus on to become our best selves.

Bridging a unfathomable Gap in our life from work to retirement 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It is now almost fifteen years since I entered into the challenging world of retirement. In no time at all, I found myself emulating the comment of another retiree to the effect that he was busier in retirement than he ever had been! At one of my retirement dinner ceremonies, a young lady came up to me and said, "Thank you for all that you have done and I think that you will find this book quite interesting!" I read the book in the next few days and its wisdom and humor have been with me ever since. It has so much to give to us beyond retirement!
Since that time I would say that I have easily given away to my "retiring friends" at least forty copies of this book. Each time I have echoed the words of the original giver with the additional request to let me know what their reactions were. The unanimous sentiment was that the book provided so many helpful insights and now they are giving it away as well.
I would only emphasize one point that is made in the book, we need to plan ahead for this event of retirement. It is not something we just step into having closed the door to our office.

Overly technical for the undergraduate, needs simplified. 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be too technical and dry for the average undergraduate. It contained information that seemed both relevent and useless to the consumer. For instance, the chapters explained a mild version of the topic of discussion, then, went into detail on that topic later on. Instead of breaking the topics up so much it would be preferrable to read it all at once. I read the book numerous times, and still had some problems comprehending the exact meanings of many of the subjects. Learning and Behavior was more technical than the average undergraduate can learn, or should be tested on.

Editorial Review:

Widely acclaimed for its thoroughness and clarity, this contemporary survey of the field of learning offers comprehensive coverage of both classic studies and the most recent developments and trends–with an emphasis on the importance of learning principles in everyday life. Many real-world examples and analogies make the often abstract concepts and theories of the field more concrete and relevant, and most chapters include sections that describe how the theories and principles have been used in the applied field of behavior modification. Chapter topics include classical conditioning, operant conditioning, avoidance and punishment, theories and research on operant conditioning, stimulus control and concept formation, learning by observation, and much more. For individuals with an interest in psychology—especially learning, conditioning, and the experimental analysis of behavior.

CLASSIC! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is already a classic of its kind. Yes, the hypotheses are not new, and yes, there is some speculation. So what?!

Damasio takes the abstruse and technically demanding field of neuroscience and turns it into a novel. The book is not dumbed down, nor is it patronizing.

Damasio's main contention is that logic and reason are impossible without emotion. That is why intuitions are called gut feelings. He goes over many case studies, experiments, and introspection, to drive this point home.

Our body is where the action takes place. Only after (or sometimes concurrent with) the body makes up its mind, does the mind follow. For a quick example, suppose you are sitting down in a college classroom. There is an open seat next to you. Suddenly, you spot a voluptuously delightful young lady walking toward you. What happens to you? Your heart starts to beat faster, your palms sweat a little, your body tenses up; and neurotransmitters release a cascade of chemicals into your blood stream which modulate your body's internal viscera. You focus your attention on this women. Do you invite her to sit next to you? Or, are you to nervous to do so? If you are too nervous, think about what is going on. Is it because your brain is telling you that you are? No. Your body is sending signals to your brain and vice versa in a feedback loop. Your brain then 'reads' the signals comming from your body as nervousness. Without a body, you could 'feel' nothing. There would be no emotion.
Thus, to a large degree, your decision was made prior to conscious awareness, and you could not control it.

This way of thinking seems anathema to Westerners who love to believe that rationality means pure logic without emotion. You know what happens to decision making when your emotions become blunted due to brain damage? It goes completely out the window.

As Damasio says: "No body, never mind."

I think the take home message of this book is that we are biological organisms through and through. There is no Cartesian soul: Nothing that makes humans unique machines of deduction. We are at the mercy of our passions.

This should not be surprising. Great thinkers from Augustine to Hume have suspected as much. Now we have the science to confirm such insights.

N.B. some of the material in this book is dated. Consult Damasio's later books and Journal articles by Ledoux, Damasio et al. For the latest progress in neuroscience.

Editorial Review:

Since Descartes famously proclaimed, "I think, therefore I am," science has often overlooked emotions as the source of a person's true being. Even modern neuroscience has tended, until recently, to concentrate on the cognitive aspects of brain function, disregarding emotions. This attitude began to change with the publication of Descartes' Error in 1995. Antonio Damasio—"one of the world's leading neurologists" (The New York Times)—challenged traditional ideas about the connection between emotions and rationality. In this wondrously engaging book, Damasio takes the reader on a journey of scientific discovery through a series of case studies, demonstrating what many of us have long suspected: emotions are not a luxury, they are essential to rational thinking and to normal social behavior.

Excellent Assistant for conducting a research 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If it is the first time you are trying to conduct a scientific experiment in psychology, this is the book you should refer to. Easy to read with numerous examples, manages to clarify even difficult issues. It helped a lot while preparing my experiment for my PhD thesis.

Editorial Review:

Known for its readability, Experimental Methodology is organized so that each chapter focuses on a specific step in the research process. The primary orientation of this text is toward providing instruction in the experimental approach, but an introduction to non-experimental approaches such as ex-post facto research, correlational research, and survey research is provided. Rather than dichotomizing psychological research into descriptive and experimental research, this edition takes the more current approach of using the quantitative and qualitative research dichotomy, presented in Chapter 2. Christensen also incorporates thorough coverage of research ethics. MARRKET: For anyone interested in research methods in psychology and education.

A Great Learning Tool 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I just finished a Research Methods in Psychology class that used this text. Overall, I thought this book was excellent. All the topics discussed are well organized and explained with many helpful examples. The writing is clear and generally easy to understand. I struggled with a couple chapters but class discussions helped clear up what I didn't understand. Some of the students in my class complained that the reading could be a little dry at times and the chapters a little long. I don't necessarily agree with that. I would describe the chapters as thorough and to me, they were interesting. I think those who complained were just less motivated and wouldn't enjoy the subject matter no matter how it was presented.

One of the things I found most helpful was the fact that each chapter begins with a list of key points to be presented in the chapter. These were a great help in keeping focused during the reading. I think anyone who bothered to do them would also find the questions at the end of each chapter to be very helpful. I tried to answer them regurlarly when preparing for tests found that they thoroughly covered the important material. Those along with the publisher's website were my key to success in the class I took. The final chapters do a good job of explaining statistics needed to write a research report (although I think a class in statistics is needed to really understand everything). There is also a complete, annotated research report at the end of the book which I also found very helpful (more helpful than the sample report provided in the APA style manual).

Editorial Review:

Research Methods in Psychology provides a comprehensive and readable introduction to methods for undergraduates. Employing a multi-method approach and exposing students to real examples of published research throughout the text, the authors provide students with the tools necessary to do good and ethical research in psychology and to understand the research they learn about in psychology courses and in the media. A wealth of pedagogical aids serve to break down the aversion and phobia that many students bring to a methods course. The 8th edition boasts a wealth of new examples with nearly 50 of the research examples from 2004-2007 and more than half of those from 2006 and 2007. So, as students read this methods text, they will also be learning about “cutting-edge” research in psychology.

A well-presented introductory experimental psychology book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a great success-- written in humour and style, Mister Martin guides me to all stages of planning, doing and reporting psychology experiments. This is certainly a 'must read' for all novice experimenters. This work is also free of pretentious scientific jargon. Excellent.

Editorial Review:

Learn how to design, execute, interpret, and report on simple psychology experiments! David W. Martin blends humor, clear instruction, and solid scholarship to make this concise text a perfect introduction to research methods in psychology. DOING PSYCHOLOGY EXPERIMENTS guides you through the experimentation process in a step-by-step manner. Martin emphasizes the decision-making aspects of research, as well as the logic behind research procedures. He also devotes two separate chapters to many of the ethical questions that confront new experimenters – giving you a complete introduction to the psychology laboratory.
