The worst textbook I've ever wasted money on... 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Poorly ordered, extremely dry, and almost impossible to read. And I've read a lot of textbooks.

If you want a good Forensic Psychology book, save your money on this one. Beg and plead with professors and school personnel responsible for selecting textbooks and ask them to PLEASE not choose this useless text that is better served as a large coaster.

Editorial Review:

Written by two of the leading authorities in the field, FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY, Third Edition introduces you to the practice of forensic psychology by showing how psychologists aid the legal system by serving as expert witnesses, criminal profilers, and trial consultants for jury selection and child custody hearings. Wrightsman and Fulero present the roles and responsibilities of forensic psychologists, and address both the opportunities and temptations inherent in those roles. Through this lens, the authors explore the ethical issues facing practicing forensic psychologists, such as promising clients too much, the possibility of becoming advocates rather than objective scientists, and the pitfalls associated with substituting one's values for data. The authors provide an accurate and candid picture of the field, and the range of careers in forensic psychology.

This book is amazing! I actually wanted to read every page of my assigned reading and it was very easy to understand. The diagrams are only drawings, but they are simple and realistic. The book is outlined very well and I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

This introductory text provides undergraduate students with the basics of anatomy, physiology, and the applications of kinesiology. It uses a qualitative approach with an easy-to-follow writing style. Theory is balanced with many sport and real-world applications to promote the integrated nature of kinesiology, including the anatomical and biomechanical concepts.

Required reading 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The second edition, published in 1997, was the ultimate reference authority. The field has expanded considerably since then, and this third edition is even bigger and better. It is written for two groups: mental health professionals who perform psychological evaluations for the courts, and the legal professionals who retain them. It is also an invaluable resource book for students pursuing careers in forensic psychology or mental health law.

The collective experiences of the authors are diverse, and the book's coverage is similarly wide-ranging and comprehensive. Overview chapters discuss the nature of the legal system and forensic psychological assessment. Specific topics include criminal (competencies, mental state at the time of the offense, juvenile delinquency, sentencing) and non-criminal applications (civil commitment, tort claims, child abuse, parenting).

Always, the authors focus both on ethics and on practicality. We learn about operating a forensic practice and the how-to's of communicating with the courts, both orally and in writing. One of my favorite sections is the last hundred pages, which contain 17 sample reports complete with discussion. As a teaching tool, there is nothing better than this.

Thorough and well-written, this book is mandatory for the shelf of any forensic practitioner, mental health lawyer, or forensic psychology graduate student.

Editorial Review:

This is the definitive reference and text for both mental health and legal professionals. The authors offer a uniquely comprehensive discussion of the legal and clinical contexts of forensic assessment, along with best-practice guidelines for participating effectively and ethically in a wide range of criminal and civil proceedings. Presented are findings, instruments, and procedures related to criminal and civil competencies, civil commitment, sentencing, personal injury claims, antidiscrimination laws, child custody, juvenile justice, and more.

Excellent Sport Psychology Text! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I use this text in an on-line undergraduate sport psychology course. Cox does a very good job of presenting research and application aspects of sport and exercise psychology. Students enjoy this easy-to-read text.

Editorial Review:

This introduction to sport and exercise psychology shows how principles supported by current scientific research can be used by physical educators, coaches, and athletes in everyday situations. It also addresses practical issues, such as dealing with anxiety, arousal, and stress; developing coping, relaxation, and energizing strategies; understanding the effects of an audience on human performance; building team cohesion; and preventing burnout.

The best of applied sport psychology theory and practice. 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Jean William's edited text is a favorite of mine. I use it in our graduate program at Georgia Southern University. The authors have done an excellent job of presenting both the "whys" and "how tos" of the intervention techniques in sport psychology. Several leading sport psychologists have made significant, easy to understand, contributions to this text. This book has accomplished the rare feat of being able to be used as an academic text AND a "performance enhancement" book for the interested athlete, coach, exerciser, or other performers.

Editorial Review:

This is a comprehensive and practical guide to psychological concepts and theories as well as to strategies and techniques designed to help future coaches and sport psychologists cultivate peak performance and personal growth through recent advances in sport psychology. The text’s five-part organization focuses on motivation and leadership, social interactions, mental training, program implementation, and issues that go beyond performance enhancement. Contributing authors are experts in their topic, and each chapter has been written specifically for this collection.

Editorial Review:

This is a fully-revised and updated version of the top academic work in forensic psychology. Focussed mainly on the practical aspects of forensics, this volume provides all readers need to know to be effective practioners. Detailed sections cover both civil and criminal forensic practice; forensic report writing; treating mental illness in the incarcerated; andethicsal issues. Contributors are the best-known and most respected practitioners in the field from the US and Canada. All chapters are completely revised from the previous edition, including 6 which have new authors. Forensic psychology is one of the fastest-growing specialties in the field. Its practitioners are able to avoid managed care and structured settings, and they often focus on assessment, rather than long-term treatment of clients. With the growing public interest in all things forensic, most graduate programs in psychology have added at least one course in forensic psychology over the past few years; and more established professionals are entering the field every day.
