Great teaching aid for clinical psychology students 5 out of 5 stars.

Great way to see how the DSM-IV criteria apply to real cases. Beware, this is the exact same (with exception to the references to the DSM-IV-TR page numbers) as the 1994 DSM-IV Casebook. So, if you already own the older version, don't bother wasting your money.

aboura 3 out of 5 stars.

Great case book. Clear, interesting, insightful. Good for brushing up on your diagnostic skills.

Editorial Review:

Newly updated for DSM-IV-TR, the DSM-IV-TR® Casebook facilitates the transition from the concepts and terminology of DSM-IV-TR to actual clinical situations by providing clinical vignettes for illustration and study. Carefully updated, it helps both students and clinicians visualize DSM-IV-TR disorders through the use of clinical vignettes. Each is followed by a discussion of the DSM-IV-TR differential diagnosis. The DSM-IV-TR® Casebook is highly recommended for clinicians to help them develop a deeper comprehension of all diagnostic categories.

Editorial Review:

Elyn Saks is a success by any measure: she’s an endowed professor at the prestigious University of Southern California Gould School of Law. She has managed to achieve this in spite of being diagnosed as schizophrenic and given a "grave" prognosis -- and suffering the effects of her illness throughout her life.

Saks was only eight, and living an otherwise idyllic childhood in sunny 1960s Miami, when her first symptoms appeared in the form of obsessions and night terrors. But it was not until she reached Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar that her first full-blown episode, complete with voices in her head and terrifying suicidal fantasies, forced her into a psychiatric hospital.

Saks would later attend Yale Law School where one night, during her first term, she had a breakdown that left her singing on the roof of the law school library at midnight. She was taken to the emergency room, force-fed antipsychotic medication, and tied hand-and-foot to the cold metal of a hospital bed. She spent the next five months in a psychiatric ward.

So began Saks’s long war with her own internal demons and the equally powerful forces of stigma. Today she is a chaired professor of law who researches and writes about the rights of the mentally ill. She is married to a wonderful man.

In The Center Cannot Hold, Elyn Saks discusses frankly and movingly the paranoia, the inability to tell imaginary fears from real ones, and the voices in her head insisting she do terrible things, as well as the many obstacles she overcame to become the woman she is today. It is destined to become a classic in the genre.

Editorial Review:

No one likes being called crazy. But Dr. Martha Stout, a psychological trauma specialist, invites all to question their own level of mental acumen in The Myth of Sanity. Her logic makes sense: all humans experience fear, especially during youth; individuals' response systems determine how their brains catalogue traumatic experiences and trigger "dissociative" coping strategies. Those who experience horrific situations like abuse, catastrophe, or grueling medical procedures fare the worst over time; their dissociative behaviors can manifest themselves as situational fatigue, "lost" hours or days, or split personalities.

Drawing from 20 years of treating such patients, Stout presents several composite characters to illustrate all levels of dissociative behavior: from the very serious DID (dissociative identity disorder, or "switching" among distinct personalities) to the nearly universal "brief phasing out" (losing a thought or getting "caught up" in something). As each patient undergoes psychoanalysis, Stout highlights clues for identifying trauma sufferers and lends advice to their loved ones. Tending away from scientific data or supportive research findings--while tending toward a fiction-lover's prose--The Myth of Sanity focuses on personal stories and Stout's zealous admiration for responsible therapy patients who wake to a sanity unclouded by past fears. --Liane Thomas

Editorial Review:

Discovering that their teen “cuts” is absolutely terrifying for parents. Without a clear understanding of what motivates cutting, many worry their teen may be contemplating suicide. Michael R. Hollander, a leading authority on teen self-injury, gives parents the straight facts about this alarming behavior--and explains what they can do to make it stop. Drawing on years of clinical practice and the latest research, Dr. Hollander shows how overwhelming emotions lead some teens to hurt themselves, and how various treatments--chief among them dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)--can provide effective routes to wellness. Parents learn what to look for in a therapist, how to talk to their teen about cutting without making it worse, and practical strategies for helping their teen cope with extreme emotions in a healthier way. Helping Teens Who Cut also provides much-needed suggestions for reducing stress and improving family communication and problem solving.

Editorial Review:

When it was first published in France in 1961 as Folie et déraison: Histoire de la folie à l'âge classique, few had heard of a thirty-four year old philosopher by the name of Michel Foucault. By the time an abridged English edition was published in 1967 as Madness and Civilization, Michel Foucault had shaken the intellectual world. This translation is the first English edition of the complete French texts of the first and second edition, including all prefaces and appendices, some of them unavailable in the existing French edition. Challenging entrenched views of madness and reason, History of Madness is one of the classics of twentieth century thought. It is Foucault's first major work, written in a dazzling, and sometimes enigmatic, literary style. It also introduces many of the inspiring and radical themes that he was to write about throughout his life, above all the nature of power and social exclusion. History of Madness begins in the Middle Ages with vivid descriptions of the exclusion and confinement of lepers. Why, Foucault asks, when the leper houses were emptied at the end of the Middle Ages, were they turned into places of confinement for the mad? Why, within the space of several months in 1656, was one out of every hundred people in Paris confined? Foucault's bold and controversial answer is that throughout modern history, madness has meant isolation, repression and exclusion. Even the Enlightenment, which attempted to educate and include the mad, ended up imprisoning them in a moral world. As Foucault famously declared to a reporter from Le Monde in 1961, 'Madness exists only in society. It does not exist outside the forms of sensibility that isolate it, and the forms of repulsion that expel it or capture it.' Shifting brilliantly from Descartes and early Enlightenment thought to the founding of the Hôpital Général in Paris and the work of early psychiatrists Philippe Pinel and Samuel Tuke, Foucault focuses throughout, not only on scientific and medical analyses of madness, but also on the philosophical and cultural values attached to the mad. He also urges us to recognize the creative and liberating forces that madness represents, brilliantly drawing on examples from Goya, Nietzsche, Van Gogh and Artaud. The History of Madness is an inspiring and classic work that challenges us to understand madness, reason and power and the forces that shape them

Probably fine for an older child... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is 6 1/2 and we've been struggling with trich for about 4 months now. This book may be helpful for an older, very motivated child or adolescent. Though my daughter reads far above her grade level it did not hold her interest and the suggestions are too involved and complex for her to follow. I'll put it away for now in case we need it later, though I hope we won't!

Easy for a child to understand 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is written in a child-friendly way and was easy for my daughter to understand. It gives great alternatives to hair-pulling to relieve anxiety. Thanks for the other great reviews recommending this book!

Great for Kids 5 out of 5 stars.

Gave this to a 10 year old girl who has trichotillomania. She loved the book. She was able to follow it and use it and it made her feel special!

Editorial Review:

Shows young people how to break their hair pulling habit by identifying trigger situations, developing resistance strategies, charting progress, modifying environments, motivating themselves, and staying with the program. Advice for therapists and parents, too.
