Review 4 out of 5 stars.

I was assigned readings from this book for my Biopsychosocial aspects of addictions class in graduate school for counseling. Compared to other textbooks, it is a relatively easy read, and there's a great deal of helpful information contained in it. My only complaints for the book thus far are that the chapters on physiology and anatomy include a great deal of information that assumes the reader already has a basis of knowledge in anatomy, biology, and physiology and certain terms aren't defined in context. Also, the book does not contain a great deal of information on "club drugs" such as ecstasy, ketamine, PCP, etc.

Editorial Review:

Designed for the introduction to drugs and substance abuse course as taught in departments of health education, psychology, biology, sociology, and criminal justice, this full-color market-leading text provides the latest information on drugs and their effects on society and human behavior. For over thirty years, instructors and students have relied on it to examine drugs and behavior from the behavioral, pharmacological, historical, social, legal, and clinical perspectives.

Editorial Review:

Recent advances in molecular pharmacology and brain imaging have revolutionized our understanding of how psychoactive drugs work. Now, from the authors of Principles of Neuropsychopharmacology, comes a new undergraduate textbook integrating these developments. The first section of the book provides extensive foundation materials, including the basic principles of pharmacology, neurophysiology and neuroanatomy, synaptic transmission, and methods in psychopharmacology. The second section describes key features of major neurotransmitter systems, including the catecholamines, serotonin, acetylcholine, glutamate and GABA. The third and fourth sections discuss theories and mechanisms of drug addiction and psychopathology. All major substances of abuse as well as drugs used to treat mental illness are covered.

Psychopharmacology: Drugs, the Brain and Behavior is unique in its breadth of coverage, ranging from historical accounts of drug use to clinical and preclinical behavioral studies to the latest research on drug effects in transgenic mouse models. Student engagement with the material is fostered by opening each chapter with a relevant vignette and by providing breakout boxes presenting novel or cutting-edge topics for special discussion. The book is extensively illustrated with full-color photographs and line art depicting important concepts and experimental data. Psychopharmacology: Drugs, the Brain and Behavior is appropriate for undergraduate psychopharmacology or drugs and behavior courses that emphasize relationships between the behavioral effects of psychoactive drugs and their mechanisms of action.

Editorial Review:

Since the publication of its first edition, the Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists had filled a significant gap in the professional literature available to psychologists and other mental health clinicians: a practical, accessible guide to psychoactive medications that is both comprehensive and free from the complicated language and technical rigor found in medical schools texts. Thousands of therapists keep this book on their shelves to quickly reference drug facts for their clients. Tens of thousands of graduate and undergraduate students of psychology are first introduced to the medical treatment of mental health problems with the handbook. Now in its fifth edition, the book continues to be among the most important references for mental health clinicans.

The book is organized by disorder and, within each disorder, by medication. Reader learn the indications, contraindication, efficacy, side effects, and success indicators for each drug. Interactions between drugs are discussed, as are the differences between using certain medications in the treatment of adults and children and adolescents. In this edition, many details have been updated to reflect finds from ongoic research, including new material about the sexual side effects of antidepressants.

Editorial Review:

A clinical psychiatrist explores the effects of DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known.

• A behind-the-scenes look at the cutting edge of psychedelic research.

• Provides a unique scientific explanation for the phenomenon of alien abduction experiences.

From 1990 to 1995 Dr. Rick Strassman conducted U.S. Government-approved and funded clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected sixty volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical found in the psychedelic Amazon brew, ayahuasca, is also manufactured by the human brain. In Strassman's volunteers, it consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many reported convincing encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, aliens, angels, and spirits. Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives.

Strassman's research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by Rene Descartes to be the seat of the soul. DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul's movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that "alien abduction experiences" are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. If used wisely, DMT could trigger a period of remarkable progress in the scientific exploration of the most mystical regions of the human mind and soul.

Dumbed-down psychopharm 1 out of 5 stars.

Book is trivial, useless rubbish. Do not waste your time or money on this book. Read Stephen Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology, a masterful discussion of the subject.

This book was used for a text book in my MFT program at CSUDH this summer 2008. Easy read and excellent to keep on the shelf as a reference. Good for basic understanding of meds and reactions to meds. Written for a lay-person to understand and grasp the fundamentals of drug use in the mental health field.

Excellent text and reference support for material 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent synthesis of pharmacology and research based comments on drug pharmacology. To the point, not a bunch of extra gobbeltigook text to wade through like in Uppers, Downers and Allarounders. I work in the addiction field and this book covers the topic well in terms of neurochemistry as well as effects of drugs and their effects and legitmate uses, as well as some history on them. It also covers pharmacological treatment of drug addictions, again something that I use in my field. I use this book as a reference in my work. The references cited in the book are extensive and they are noted (numerically) after each statement in the text, which I prefer. I have often looked up the references for more information, although usually this text provides the information I need without a bunch of parenthetical B.S.

The reason I did not rate this book 5 stars is because I have a paperback version and the binding fell apart. I feel a paperback should not fall apart unless I got it used at a garage sale. So I am looking to see if they have a hard bound version of this book.

Editorial Review:

From its first edition 30 years ago, Robert Julien’s A Primer of Drug Action has evolved side by side with the field it covers, capturing the current state of the science of psychopharmacology with each new edition.

Furthering that tradition, the new edition takes its place as the definitive guide to the pharmacology of drugs that affect the mind and behavior as understood today. With over 40% new research citations, there is no clearer, more current presentation available on the mechanisms of drug action, etiologies of major psychological disorders, rationales for drug treatment, and the uses of psychopharmacology in patient care.

Good Resource 4 out of 5 stars.

This text combined with the DSST for Drugs and Alcohol were great resources to prepare for the DANTES test. If I wasn't familiar with the terminology from the DANTES review then it could be easily located in this text.

Not bad 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As textbooks go this wasn't bad. It is up to date and gives an excellent overview of substance use and abuse. I found it to be engaging. It presents the information in a very matter of fact/non-judgmental way. The title is a little misleading in that the text focuses on United States society, not society in general.

unusually useful 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm a psychiatry resident. I carry this with me everywhere. It's concise, relatively accurate, basic, has all the useful info at my fingertips, quickly. I lost one copy in the ER late at night and felt naked. I quickly bought another.

The book is fairly up to date, listing drugs like Pregabalin and Gabitril; discrediting Topirimate for bipolar treatment, but alluding to it's efficacy in impulsivity and alcohol cravings--all current psychopharm issues.

It's missing beta-blockers and others which I forget. Some meds are well described, other are lacking--Not very consistent. It certainly doesn't go into the drug specifics, but is an excellent pocket reference.

concise book but could better for the digital book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book is useful and easy to read. However, there're some suggestions for the digital book.
(1) It is suggested to add the phonetic transcription of the drugs because I hope to know the pronunciation of each drugs.
(2) It is suggested to add the photos of the drugs.

Editorial Review:

This compact handbook features dosage, side effect, and drug interaction information for all psychiatric drugs. It includes information that is useful to the psychiatrist, internist, and student.

straightforward, with little moralising 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This updated edition describes all the common addictive substances that are abused in the US. Alcohol and narcotics. There's nothing here in any depth about the biochemistry of addiction. Rather, the typical perspective of a reader might be that of a social worker.

In dispassionate and non-moralising terms, the various drugs are explained. Along with models of addiction that can (or might) be applied to most of the drugs. The symptoms of addiction are made clear. So that you can recognise these in your clients, perhaps. The consequences of addiction are also gone into. The human cost, both to the addict and to those around him.

While many of the drugs are illegal in the US, the book tends to avoid discussion about legalisation. Whether or not you think some drugs might be legalised is largely outside the book's scope.

Editorial Review:

Drugs in Perspective is written for the drug and substance abuse counseling course designed to prepare future health professionals to work with patients, clients, and families of abusers. It is designed to provide perspective on the aspects and problems associated with addiction as well as provide the fundamentals on the dynamics of chemical dependency. This edition improves topic flow for easier understanding and brings the research base into the 21st century.
