Editorial Review:

In recent years a series of practice guidelines for the effective treatment of mental disorders have been proposed by groups, such as the Division of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association, as well as the U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research and several managed care companies. Although many of these guidelines have provided helpful direction in the clinical decision making process, none yet has gathered together the numerous advances in both clinical psychology and psychiatry into one unified guidebook. A Guide to Treatments That Work assembles a distinguished group of both clinical psychologists and psychiatrists to take stock of current drug treatment and psychotherapeutic interventions to see which treatments actually work, which don't, and what still remains beyond the scope of our current knowledge. These eminent scholars thoroughly review available outcome data and clinical trials and provide detailed specification of methods and procedures to ensure effective treatment for each major DSM-IV disorder. As an interdisciplinary work that integrates information from both clinical psychology and psychiatry, this work will serve as an indispensable desk reference for all practitioners.

A Very Informative Book About Mental Illness and Drugs To Treat It 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is very informative when it comes to describing mental illness' and the drugs they use to treat them. There are chapters devoted to depression ( and all forms of it), anxiety ( all forms of it), schizophrenia, and manic depression. The 4 most common mental illnesses known. There is one chapter dedicated to sleeping pills. It describes in great detail the symptoms of each illness and gives examples of good treatment and bad treatment regarding patients who complain of symptoms. The most interesting area of the book are the drugs used to treat mental illness. Each drug is explained in detail as to what it is prescribed for, the dosage necessary, side effects, what tests to take if needed during thr drug trial use, and when not to use it. There is also a chapter devoted to drugs that are used to conteract side effects of anti-pyschotic medication. It also talks about how to know if you actually need medication foran illness and provides easy to read charts. I would highly recommend this book it will most definately provide you with valuable information that your doctor may have forgotten to mention or go into detail with you. The book is a little outdated but the only new drugs that are not included are Celexa, Lexapro, Cymbalta, and other newer anti-psychotics and mood stabilers.

Editorial Review:

Many psychotropic drugs are prescribed for children and adolescents on the basis of their efficacy in adults, since controlled studies in the corresponding age groups have often not been carried out or reported. Information is, however, available, although it is often difficult to find and is frequently in sources that are not readily accessible for the busy clinician. The Clinical Handbook of Psychotropic Drugs for Children and Adolescents provides the solution, by compiling the information for the first time in an easy-to-use form. Designed to fill a need for a comprehensive but compact and easy-to-use reference, specifically for psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, nurses, and other mental health professionals dealing with children and adolescents, the Handbook summarizes the latest information from the published literature (scientific data, controlled clinical trials, case reports) and clinical experience in compact and easy to use charts and bulleted lists for each class of psychotropic drug used in children and adolescents. Structured similarly to the highly regarded Clinical Handbook of Psychotropic Drugs, this version includes for each class of drugs both monograph statements on use in children and adolescents and approved indications, as well as the available data concerning off-label indications, findings from open and double-blind studies concerning doses, adverse effects, and other considerations in these age groups.

Excellent text and reference support for material 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent synthesis of pharmacology and research based comments on drug pharmacology. To the point, not a bunch of extra gobbeltigook text to wade through like in Uppers, Downers and Allarounders. I work in the addiction field and this book covers the topic well in terms of neurochemistry as well as effects of drugs and their effects and legitmate uses, as well as some history on them. It also covers pharmacological treatment of drug addictions, again something that I use in my field. I use this book as a reference in my work. The references cited in the book are extensive and they are noted (numerically) after each statement in the text, which I prefer. I have often looked up the references for more information, although usually this text provides the information I need without a bunch of parenthetical B.S.

The reason I did not rate this book 5 stars is because I have a paperback version and the binding fell apart. I feel a paperback should not fall apart unless I got it used at a garage sale. So I am looking to see if they have a hard bound version of this book.

Editorial Review:

From its first edition 30 years ago, Robert Julien’s A Primer of Drug Action has evolved side by side with the field it covers, capturing the current state of the science of psychopharmacology with each new edition.
Furthering that tradition, the new edition takes its place as the definitive guide to the pharmacology of drugs that affect the mind and behavior as understood today.  With over 40% new research citations, there is no clearer, more current presentation available on the mechanisms of drug action, etiologies of major psychological disorders, rationales for drug treatment, and the uses of psychopharmacology in patient care.

Excellent text 5 out of 5 stars.

Would highly recommend this text to anyone who is interested in neurological or psychiatric disorders. Very good illustrations and explanations.

Editorial Review:

Relying upon the best-selling third edition of Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology, Dr. Stephen M. Stahl has revised chapters covering antipsychotics and mood stabilizers for this third edition of Antipsychotics and Mood Stabilizers. More than one-third longer than the previous edition, Antipsychotics and Mood Stabilizers is essential reading for professionals treating psychosis and students learning the mechanisms of drug reactions. This updated edition includes advances in neurobiology and recent clinical developments to explain the concepts underlying drug treatment of psychiatric disorders. The fully revised text is complemented by many new illustrations and enhanced to reflect new knowledge and topics not covered in the previous edition. Intended as a primer text covering all aspects of treatment for psychosis and related conditions, this concise volume can nevertheless be read cover to cover by experts and novices alike.

Excellent introductory glimpse of neuropharmacology 4 out of 5 stars.
51 of 53 people found this review helpful.

This book is an excellent introductory text, suitable for undergraduates or "outsiders", outlining the basic principles of neuropharmacology. Reviews of the major concepts involved in neurotransmission are included in the first half of the book, such as cellular and molecular (read DNA) biological basics as well as descriptions of amino acid based neurotransmission. The second half of the book is organized with each chapter devoted to a single molecule. My major criticism is that although the title is "The BIOCHEMICAL Basis of Neuropharmacology", the chemistry in the text is rather simple and incomplete, and the lack of quantitative discussion of pharmacokinetics is a major disappointment. All beginning students of neuropharmacology should purchase this book - in paperback it is truly a bargain. END

Editorial Review:

This classic text gives a uniquely lucid and lively view of neurotransmitters, their role in nervous system function, and their involvement in the mechanisms of psychiatric drug action. For three decades it has served as an essential guide for students of neuroscience and psychopharmacology, residents in psychiatry and neurology, and clinicians and scientists. Both authoriative and very readable, it has been thoroughly updated for each edition. In the 8th Edition more space is devoted to clinical examples, subclasses of receptors that provide targets for new drugs, molecular genetics, the major problem of drug delivery to the brain, and the growing recognition of nicotin receptors in the brain and their possible involvement in Alxheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. In addition, the book's format has been enlarged and a second color added to many of the illustrations.

Editorial Review:

This text covers the range of chemical substances that affect our minds and our bodies and discusses the challenges these substances bring to our daily lives. In today's world, drugs and their use present a social paradox, combining the potential for good and for bad. As a society and as individuals, we can be the beneficiaries of drugs or their victims. This perspective continues to be the message of Drugs, Behavior, and Modern Society, Fourth Edition. As has been the case since the first edition published in 1996, students will be introduced to the basic facts and the major issues concerning drug-taking behavior, in a straightforward, comprehensive, and "reader-friendly" manner. Drugs, Behavior, and Modern Society, Fourth Edition has been designed to be the most comprehensive review of psychoactive drugs of any undergraduate college textbook on the market today. It is particularly notable for the attention given to two aspects of drug-taking behavior that have been underreported in other texts: steroid abuse and inhalant abuse. The text also highlights the impact of dietary supplements, whether herb-based or not, on the current drug scene; the impact of "club drugs" on contemporary drug-taking behavior; and the recent increase in the abuse of prescription analgesic (pain-relief) medications such as OxyContin.

Clear and Understandable 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding the possible medications that may be prescribed to treat different childhood disorders. As a therapist, I appreciate the layout of possible side effects and helpful range of dosage for particular medications. I believe that parents would find this book informative when they are trying to make a decision on whether medication may be helpful for their child.

Editorial Review:

This short and easy-to-understand book offers all the information you need about the use of psychoactive medications in the treatment of childhood and adolescent psychological disorders.

The book is organized by disorders most commonly encountered in young people, like ADD, depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety, learning disorders, and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. Each chapter includes diagnosis criteria for each problem, treatment indications and contraindications, and notes for monitoring, evaluation, and follow-up care. The book identifies popular classes of drugs by brand and generic names, and provides fact sheets that therapists can offer parents or parents can show to doctors who may need more information to make sound treatment decisions.

Editorial Review:

A dazzling and powerful account of a life profoundly altered by Prozac-- "surely among the best on the long-term effects of the drug" (The New York Times)

In 1988, at age 26, Lauren Slater lived alone in a basement apartment in Cambridge, depressed, suicidal, unemployed. Ten years later, she is a psychologist running her own clinic, an award-winning writer, and happily married. The transformation in her life was brought about by Prozac. Prozac Diary is Lauren Slater's incisive account of a life restored to productivity, creativity, and love. When she wakes up one morning and finds that her demons no longer have a hold on her, Slater struggles with the strange state of being well after a lifetime of craziness. Yet this is no hymn to a miracle pharmaceutical. It is a frankly ambivalent quest for the truth of self behind an ongoing reliance on a drug. Slater also addresses Prozac's notorious "poop-out" effect and its devastating attack on her libido. This is the first memoir to reflect on long-term Prozac use, and reviewers agree that no one has written about Prozac with such beauty, honesty, and insight.

* 12 million Americans take Prozac regularly
* Prozac Diary appeared on the Boston Globe and Independent bestseller lists
* Penguin Readers Guide Bound into Every Book

"Powerful. . . . The chemistry of Prozac Diary is beautiful." --Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times
