Editorial Review:

A dazzling and powerful account of a life profoundly altered by Prozac-- "surely among the best on the long-term effects of the drug" (The New York Times)

In 1988, at age 26, Lauren Slater lived alone in a basement apartment in Cambridge, depressed, suicidal, unemployed. Ten years later, she is a psychologist running her own clinic, an award-winning writer, and happily married. The transformation in her life was brought about by Prozac. Prozac Diary is Lauren Slater's incisive account of a life restored to productivity, creativity, and love. When she wakes up one morning and finds that her demons no longer have a hold on her, Slater struggles with the strange state of being well after a lifetime of craziness. Yet this is no hymn to a miracle pharmaceutical. It is a frankly ambivalent quest for the truth of self behind an ongoing reliance on a drug. Slater also addresses Prozac's notorious "poop-out" effect and its devastating attack on her libido. This is the first memoir to reflect on long-term Prozac use, and reviewers agree that no one has written about Prozac with such beauty, honesty, and insight.

* 12 million Americans take Prozac regularly
* Prozac Diary appeared on the Boston Globe and Independent bestseller lists
* Penguin Readers Guide Bound into Every Book

"Powerful. . . . The chemistry of Prozac Diary is beautiful." --Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times

Useful book 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It is relatively easy to read and very informative. Also, section summaries, in-text boxes, and figures are ample and fantastic! However, although very useful, at times there is too much extraneous information.

One of the most helpful text-book I've ever used 5 out of 5 stars.

Fantastic; Clear and precise with plenty of diagrams. The best introduction to psychopharmacology I could have received.

Editorial Review:

Encompassing recent advances in molecular pharmacology and brain imaging, Drugs, The Brain and Behavior offers a unique breadth of coverage from historical accounts of drug use, through clinical and preclinical behavioural studies, to the latest research on drug effects in transgenic mouse models. The first section of the book provides extensive foundation material, including the basic principles of pharmacology, neurophysiology and neuroanatomy, synaptic transmission, and methods in psychopharmacology. The second describes the key features of major neurotransmitter systems, while the third and fourth sections discuss theories and mechanisms of drug addiction and psychopathology. The book is richly illustrated and 'Breakout boxes' ensure the student remains engaged throughout.

Editorial Review:

From the author of Toxic Psychiatry and Talking Back to Prozac:

"Peter Breggin is the conscience of American psychiatry. Once more he updates us on the real evidence with respect to the safety and effectiveness of specific psychiatric medications and ECT. This information is needed by all mental health professionals, as well as patients and families." --Bertram Karon, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Michigan State University, Author of The Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia

"Nowhere does false medical thinking do more harm than in the modern psychiatric argument that mental illness is easily diagnosed and then cured by a side-effect free drug. Nowhere is the correct psychiatric thinking more evident than in the books by Peter Breggin." -- William Glasser, MD, psychiatrist, author of Reality Therapy

In Brain Disabling Treatments in Psychiatry, renowned psychiatrist Peter R. Breggin, M.D., presents startling scientific research on the dangerous behavioral abnormalities and brain dysfunctions produced by the most widely used and newest psychiatric drugs such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Cymbalta, Effexor, Xanax, Ativan, Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Geodon, Abilify, lithium and Depakote.

Many of Breggin's earlier findings have improved clinical practice, led to legal victories against drug companies, and resulted in FDA-mandated changes in what the manufacturers must admit about their drugs. Yet reliance on these drugs has continued to escalate in the last decade, and drug company interests have overwhelmed psychiatric practice.

This greatly expanded second edition, supported by the latest evidence-based research, shows that psychiatric drugs achieve their primary or essential effect by causing brain dysfunction, and that they tend to do far more harm than good.

New scientific analyses in this completely updated edition include:

  • Chapters covering every new antidepressant and stimulant drug
  • Twenty new guidelines for how to conduct non-drug therapy
  • A chapter describing how to safely withdraw from psychiatric drugs
  • A discussion of "medication spellbinding," explaining how patients fail to appreciate their drug-induced mental dysfunctions
  • Documentation of how the drug companies control research and the flow of information about psychiatric treatments

straightforward, with little moralising 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This updated edition describes all the common addictive substances that are abused in the US. Alcohol and narcotics. There's nothing here in any depth about the biochemistry of addiction. Rather, the typical perspective of a reader might be that of a social worker.

In dispassionate and non-moralising terms, the various drugs are explained. Along with models of addiction that can (or might) be applied to most of the drugs. The symptoms of addiction are made clear. So that you can recognise these in your clients, perhaps. The consequences of addiction are also gone into. The human cost, both to the addict and to those around him.

While many of the drugs are illegal in the US, the book tends to avoid discussion about legalisation. Whether or not you think some drugs might be legalised is largely outside the book's scope.

Editorial Review:

Drugs in Perspective is written for the drug and substance abuse counseling course designed to prepare future health professionals to work with patients, clients, and families of abusers. It is designed to provide perspective on the aspects and problems associated with addiction as well as provide the fundamentals on the dynamics of chemical dependency. This edition improves topic flow for easier understanding and brings the research base into the 21st century.

Editorial Review:

Over the last thirty years, there has been a radical shift in thinking about the causes of mental illness. The psychiatric establishment and the health care industry have shifted 180 degrees from blaming mother to blaming the brain as the source of mental disorders. Whereas experience and environment were long viewed as the root causes of most emotional problems, now it is common to believe that mental disturbances -- from depression and anxiety to schizophrenia -- are determined by brain chemistry. And many people have come to accept the broader notion that their very personalities are determined by brain chemistry as well.

In his award-winning, meticulously researched, and elegantly written history of psychosurgery, Great and Desperate Cures, Elliot Valenstein exposed the great injury to thousands of lives that resulted when the medical establishment embraced an unproven approach to mental illness. Now, in Blaming the Brain he exposes the many weaknesses inherent in the scientific arguments supporting the widely accepted theory that biochemical imbalances are the main cause of mental illness. Valenstein reveals how, beginning in the 1950s, the accidental discovery of a few mood-altering drugs stimulated an enormous interest in psychopharmacology, resulting in staggering growth and profits for the pharmaceutical industry. He lays bare the commercial motives of drug companies and their huge stake in expanding their markets. Prozac, Thorazine, and Zoloft are just a few of the psychoactive drugs that have dramatically changed practice in the mental health profession. Physicians today prescribe them in huge numbers even though, as several major studies reveal, their effectiveness and safety have been greatly exaggerated.

Part history, part science, part exposé, and part solution, Blaming the Brain sounds a clarion call throughout our culture of quick-fix pharmacology and our increasing reliance on drugs as a cure-all for mental illness. This brilliant, provocative book will force patients, practitioners, and prescribers alike to rethink the causes of mental illness and the methods by which we treat it.
