Dissecting a medical myth 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Depression was once viewed as a state of mind caused by stressful life factors, but today the majority of Americans believe depression is a biological disease caused by chemical imbalance in the brain. This shift in the way "mental disorders" like depression and anxiety are viewed has resulted in profound social and cultural changes. Antidepressants are now the most widely prescribed class of medications in the U.S., and many states have enacted parity legislation requiring insurance coverage for mental illness equal to physical illness. Soldiers returning from the war in Iraq are encouraged to seek treatment for post-traumatic stress, and Congress may pass a "Mothers Act" to promote screening new moms for postpartum depression. In many classrooms more than half the students are on medications for attention deficit and similar disorders, and the number of U.S. children diagnosed with bipolar disorder has risen an astounding 4,000% in the past ten years. Almost weekly we hear of yet another school shooting, with headlines clamoring for early intervention and mandatory treatment of "at risk" individuals.

Against this backdrop of a seemingly rampant epidemic of mental illness, Joanna Moncrieff has written a brilliant new book calling into question nearly everything commonly believed about the nature of psychiatric illness and psychiatric medication. First and foremost, this book shatters the myth that psychiatric drugs restore chemical balance. Page by page and chapter by chapter, Dr. Moncrieff systematically exposes the shoddy science, flawed research and deceptive marketing campaigns which have led us down a sadly mistaken path that has nothing to do with science and everything to do with profit.

Among the most interesting chapters, Moncrieff methodically examines what happens to patients on different classes of psychiatric drugs. The so-called antipsychotics such as Zyprexa and Risperdal achieve their therapeutic effects by causing a form of Parkinson's disease, while the so-called SSRI antidepressants such as Prozac and Zoloft have comparatively little effect on the brain but often cause nausea and seem to work mostly as active placebos, barely outperforming inactive placebos such as simple sugar pills.

Because the author follows strict scientific methods and carefully documents every step of her work, this is not a book that will appeal to a mass audience, but for anyone seriously interested in genuine medical research unfettered by special interests dedicated to maximizing pharmaceutical profits, I cannot recommend this book too highly. Joanna Moncrieff's The Myth of the Chemical Cure: A Critique of Psychiatric Drug Treatment belongs on the reference shelf alongside Grace E. Jackson's Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs: A Guide for Informed Consent and Peter R. Breggin's Brain Disabling Treatments in Psychiatry: Drugs, Electroshock, and the Psychopharmaceutical Complex.

Editorial Review:

This book exposes the traditional view that psychiatric drugs correct chemical imbalances as a dangerous fraud. It traces the emergence of this view and the way it supported the vested interests of the psychiatric profession, the pharmaceutical industry and the modern state. Instead it is proposed that psychiatric drugs 'work' by creating abnormal brain states, which are often unpleasant and impair normal intellectual and emotional functions along with other harmful consequences. Research on antipsychotics, antidepressants and mood stabilisers is examined to demonstrate this thesis and it is suggested that acknowledging the real nature of psychiatric drugs would lead to a more democratic practice of psychiatry. Sample Chapter: http://www.palgrave.com/PDFs/0230574319.Pdf

Disappointing new edition, don't waste your money 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I own the third edition of this book, in spiral bound paperback. Love the helpful tips and easy to read format.
This new edition, with new (no longer U.S, but Canadian) authors (hey, I'm Canadian)is disappointing on a number of levels.
First, the book is advertised as hardbound. It isn't, it's a thin thin paperback.
Second, it has only 240 pages, compared to 450 pages in the previous third edition.
Third, many individual psychotropic drugs go almost barely mentioned, and certainly not covered in the detail in the previous edition.
Fourth, the tiny print and rather cramped layout make for a less pleasant reading experience.
Fifth, the appendices are a miserable disappointment: the P450 appendix in the third edition listed the various drug interactions/inducers/inhibitors, etc; in this new edition, all you get is a pathetic description of what the various letters/numbers in e.g 2D6 represent, and a kindergarten-quality definition of inducers/inhibitors, THAT'S IT!!

A miserable disappointment. Don't waste your money. I am returning my copy for a refund. I'll keep my old third edition, it's vastly superior to this rush-job inferior product. Hey, the third edition may be a little out of date, but the info listed in this new edition isn't even that progressive (e.g omits priapism in the side-effects of Atomoxetine, offers little new information for many other drugs).

Editorial Review:

An all-in-one drug resource guide for mental health professionals.

Now in its fourth edition, this book continues to present valuable drug information in a clear, accessible format. Organized by major drug classes, it offers comprehensive data clinicians need to know to properly manage their clients' pharmacological treatment.

Editorial Review:

The placebo effect is one of the most widely used and familiar terms within science and medicine, yet it is not always clear just what we mean by a placebo effect.Though we might describe a placebo effect as being 'all in the mind', we now know that there is a genuine neurobiological basis to this phenomenon.
In recent years our knowledge of the neural bases of the placebo effect has developed markedly, and we now have a far better understanding of how it can influence both the course of a disease and the response to therapy. This is the first book to critically review the mechanisms of placebo and placebo-related effects across all medical conditions, diseases, and therapeutic interventions. It describes the main psychological and biological mechanisms of placebo responsiveness across the entire spectrum of medical disciplines. In addition, it looks at the clinical and ethical implications of administering placebos. Exhaustive in its coverage, and written by a world authority in the field, this is the definitive reference text to the placebo effect - one that will be essential for researchers and clinicians across a wide range of medical specialities.

No wonder I'm not a brain doctor 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Fabulous, interesting, understandably written, and highly technical, current information. As a long time member of the bipolar community, I constantly search for information that will help me to understand my disorder, express the causes and effects to other consumers and interested parties and to be more fully capable of being a proactive consumer with my medical professionals. The book is an easy read, can be put down when your brain is reaching max capacity and picked up like you never lost a beat.

Highly recommended for all consumers, medical professionals and educators dealing with mental illnesses.

Editorial Review:

Essential Psychopharmacology has established itself as the preeminent source of information in its field, and this book draws on the second edition to provide a resource for all clinicians involved in the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder. Stressing the basic neuroscience of the mood disorders, the fully updated text and color illustrations enable readers to understand how the various antidepressants and mood stabilizers work in their patients. It contains new information on the pharmacokinetics of antidepressants, including the role of the cytochrome P450 enzyme system and neuropeptides including substance P. The mechanisms of action of newer antidepressants, including the latest SSRIs, are prominently and authoritatively reviewed. Psychiatrists, primary care physicians and mental health professionals can depend on this book for an up-to-date account of the psychopharmacology of mood disorders, and for essential information in planning treatment approaches.

Editorial Review:

This is a new edition of the first comprehensive text to show how the advances in molecular and cellular biology and in the basic neurosciences have brought the revolution in molecular medicine to the field of psychiatry.
The book begins with a review of basic neuroscience and methods for studying neurobiology in human patients then proceeds to discussions of all major psychiatric syndromes with respect to knowledge of their etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment. Emphasis is placed on synthesizing information across numerous levels of analysis, including molecular biology and genetics, cellular physiology, neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology, and behavior, and in translating information from the basic laboratory to the clinical laboratory and finally to clinical treatment.
Editors Dennis Charney and Eric Nestle, along with their six section editors and over 150 contributors, have revised and updated all 80 chapters from the previous edition and have added new chapters on topics relating to, for example, genetics, experimental therapeutics, and late-life mood disorders. Both a textbook and a reference book, Neurobiology of Mental Illness is intended for psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and their students of trainees.

Good Medicine for Your Soul! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As a therapist I am always interested in books which will challenge my thinking and practice around my work with my clients. Here is a book which has helped me understand the underlying philosophical differences which come into play when making a diagnosis. Is my diagnosis driven by a mechanistic worldview or by a relational worldview? Will I follow the medical model rooted in a scientific cosmology or will I follow the relational model rooted in a spiritual cosmology. Why will I choose one or the other? Dr. Frattaroli provides a well-articulated arguement for choosing the latter. Utilizing a wonderfully written case study, Dr. Frattarolli lays out a clear argument for choosing a therapeutic model which heals the soul - the totallity of our being - over a medical model which only sedates the symptoms and leaves the inner being untouched. I recommend this book for all therapists who seek a broader understanding for the therapy they offer their clients.

Editorial Review:

We would all like a quick fix for our problems, a simple pill to take away our anxiety and lift us out of our depression. But there is no quick fix for the soul, and anxiety and depression may be signals of the soul's unmet needs. In this landmark work, Dr. Elio Frattaroli challenges our fixation on psychiatry's "Medical Model," which treats mental illness solely with drugs instead of seeking a deeper understanding of our problems-in other words, treating symptoms rather than people.

Combining a Renaissance humanism with a sophisticated understanding of modern science, he makes an impassioned, persuasive case for "listening to the soul"-paying attention to the inner life of the emotions, both in psychotherapy and in our everyday lives. Drawing upon philosophy, literature, psychology, and riveting case histories from his own life and practice, Frattaroli explores what has happened to a culture that has been "listening to Prozac" and hearing nothing else.

A MUST REFERENCE FOR ANY CLINICIAN 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a senior psychiatry resident and have found the Drug Information Handbook for Psychiatry to be an excellent reference for not only psychotropic medicines, but medications in general. Each drug listing has detailed, comprehensive information, which guides the clinician to dosing strategies, side effects, and drug-drug interactions, and more. There is not a drug that I have needed to find information on that is not in this book. I was also surprised to see that it has over the counter drugs, including non-allopathic remedies which often are being used by my patients.

limitations 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is comparable to the other drug information books published by lexi-comp, with similar limitations, but it also has a garnish with added pages devoted to psychiatric meds and notes on drug/disease interactions. It has a wealth of information like other lexi-comp books, but it doesn't have enough information on some important drugs, and some important drugs aren't even listed. I can't recall the drug right now that i looked for and couldn't find, but i was stunned when i couldn't find the simple information on a common drug that wasn't listed at all in this book. This drug was an older one, not one that was left out due to release of the drug after publication.

This text combined with the DSST for Drugs and Alcohol were great resources to prepare for the DANTES test. If I wasn't familiar with the terminology from the DANTES review then it could be easily located in this text.

Not bad 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As textbooks go this wasn't bad. It is up to date and gives an excellent overview of substance use and abuse. I found it to be engaging. It presents the information in a very matter of fact/non-judgmental way. The title is a little misleading in that the text focuses on United States society, not society in general.

Editorial Review:

Designed for the introduction to drugs and substance abuse course as taught in departments of health education, psychology, biology, sociology, and criminal justice, this full-color market-leading text provides the latest information on drugs and their effects on society and human behavior. For over thirty years, instructors and students have relied on it to examine drugs and behavior from the behavioral, pharmacological, historical, social, legal, and clinical perspectives.
