I loved this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

It was one of a few required texts for a Buddhism class. I chose it because I have an interest in psychology, particularly the psychodynamic perspective (unconscious motivation) and this book added to my life in such a way! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about Buddhism and freeing one's "self" from the limitations of convention. I don't agree with everything in it, but this is a book for my collection, definitely.

Editorial Review:

Thoughts Without a Thinker is the landmark book that brought the worlds of Buddhism and psychotherapy into contact with each other, and changed thousands of lives. Drawing upon his own experience as therapist, meditator, and patient, Mark Epstein, a New York-based psychiatrist trained in classical Freudian methods, integrates Western psychotherapy and the teachings of Buddhism. In accessible, intimate language, this enlightening guide explains the unique psychological contributions of the teachings of Buddhism, describes the path of meditation in contemporary psychological language, and lays out the possibility of a meditation-inspired psychotherapy. Mark Epstein's new introduction reflects on the impact of the book and on the evolving relationship between psychotherapy and Buddhism.

the anxious brain 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I read this book because I have issues with anxiety and repetitive thinking. It does have some technical info on the brain which is not easy to grasp for the layman, but it was pretty fascinating to see all the intricacies of brain function.
I found it very helpful in understanding the different types of anxiety disorders, how they are different from each other, and their treatment. It was informative on practical ways to abate compulsive thinking- without medication, and when appropriate, very comprehensive information on the many different medications in use for treating different anxiety disorders. She lists which medications are appropriate for each type of problem, and from a practitioners perspective, which meds to use first, then which to go to if those aren't a good fit, and so forth. Also she lists all the possible side affects of the individual medications, some history of their use and how to match the right drug to the patient according to a variety of factors. There is a lot of good information in this book.

Editorial Review:

When it comes to anxiety, knowledge is a calming power.

Therapists and the clients they treat benefit from understanding how anxiety is generated in the brain, how it can become panic or unbounded worry, and how the brain reestablishes the neurochemical balance that is basic to a state of well-being. Rich in neurophysiological diagrams and practical exercises that target the activity of specific neurological mechanisms, this book shows us how to take control of our brains to alleviate various anxiety disorders.

This is a must read for all those "woe is me" people always complaining about everything. Man's Search for Meaning will enlighten you to what "having a bad day" really means. I applaud Viktor Frankl for his inner strength to survive such an ordeal and come away with such dignity and inner peace.

Man's Ultimate Goal is to Find Meaning to His Life 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Frankl was already a psychiatrist at the time that he was a prisoner in Auschwitz, and some other camps, during WWII. It's the most interesting description of concentration life I've heard that I found bearable to listen to. He's very good at describing how being in a concentration camp affected the minds of the prisoners and also the guards and others who were in charge. The prisoners were all different psychologically. Some of them were destroyed mentally by the prison life. I common trait was becoming absorbed in the past to escape the unbearable present. Of course, I've seen this happen in everyday life with people who were not in concentration camps, which I think the main value of this book. His discription of psychology under these horrible conditions, one can recognize in the psychology of men one meets and knows in everyday life. He describes, too, how people acted when they were released, which was for many as difficult or even more so than adjusting to life in the camp. People often seemed indifferent to what the prisoner had just gone through, which affected different released prisoners in different ways. The strong men, like Dr. Frankl, used the concentration camp experience to grow spiritually and psychologically, but those kinds of men are few and far between.

After the War, Dr. Frankl became a practicing psychiatrist, and developed something he calls logotherapy. It's based on his idea that he developed while in the camps that man is searching for meaning in life above everything else. The men who could find some meaning in their concentration camp experience survived the best.

This book is especially wonderful if you are really interested in psychology and how people react under the most sever of circumstances, which, according to Dr. Frankil, is ever which way.

A Profound Opening into the Origins of Love and Culture 5 out of 5 stars.
54 of 57 people found this review helpful.

I am sorry to be so blunt about this, but previous reviewers Sierra and whomi do not appear to have really grasped Winnicott's work in this book (Sierra really has no clue at all). I have to respond at some length. But better to just read the book.

Winnicott (henceforward DWW) creates--in an enormous leap away from Freud--a vision of the complex and beautiful relationship of the infant and primary caregiver. In fact he speaks of the "mother infant dyad," rather than two separate persons during the first few months of life. From this union, if all goes well, the child gradual emerges and develops a sense of self through a process of disillusionment by the mother, in doses the infant can withstand.

As this occurs, the child symbolizes the lost union with the mother in what DWW calls "transitional objects" and begins, with the comfort of these objects, to begin to play in what DWW calls the "potential space." We might call it the realm of culture, of love, and of religion. Only with successful caregiving does the child have a chance to fully develop as a person, and DWW shows, in loving detail and case histories, how this happens through the devotion of the mother.

This is why DWW's work is vital not merely to psychoanalysts, but to every person on this planet. His work has influenced two generations of therapists, theorists, and educators and, indirectly, every one of us. Further, his work has increasingly been supported by developmental insights gained from attachment theory and other experimental and verifiable studies.

I don't normally write reviews on amazon.com, but I could not let foolish misreadings by other reviewers stand unchallenged. Sierra's attitude is not only condescending, it is lazy. Enough said. As for whomi, I appreciate the thought there, but DWW *does* allow for gradual disillusionment through experience of the external world. If whomi missed it that does not mean it is not there. As for using Derrida to read DWW, I imagine that is useful. Go to it, if you like. But let's not forget that the work of Lacan is inconceivable without DWW, and the work of Derrida inconceivable without Lacan.

DWW indisputably and deservedly stands as one of the most influential psychological thinkers of the 20th century. Further, his use of language is simple and yet always provocative, finding new depth and meaning in the simplest of words.

Please consider reading DWW and judge for yourself.

Editorial Review:

For the pioneering psychologist D.W. Winnicott, a creative approach to the world is what makes life worth living. But what are the origins of creativity and how can we develop it - whether within ourselves or in others? Not only does Playing and Reality address these questions, it also tackles many more that surround the fundamental issue of the individual self and its relationship with the outside world. In this landmark book of twentieth-century psychology he shows the reader how, through the attentive nurturing of creativity from the earliest years, every individual has the opportunity to enjoy a rich and rewarding cultural life. Today, as the 'hothousing' and testing of children begins at an ever-younger age, Winnicott's classic text is a more urgent and topical read than ever before.

Fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great direction for therapy. Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well.

On the other hand, the treatment of narcissistic personality disorder is weak. It just concentrates on how the patient should learn that the world does not revolve around them. It ignores the shame, need for validation and driven quality that narcissistic patients have and is reflected in their cognitions. In other words, the case used to treat NPD is of the oblivious type and in practice it is more common to see the hypervigilant type of narcisit. As CBT becomes more psychodynamic, this issue will be better addressed, I anticipate. (The oblivious narcisists are more antisocial and the vigilant ones are more on the anxiou/dependant end of the spectrum - I forget who's classification this is).

Editorial Review:

This important work presents a cognitive framework for understanding and treating personality disorders. In one volume, Aaron T. Beck and his distinguished coauthors offer both a comprehensive overview of scientific knowledge and a detailed guide to individualized treatment. Part I lays out the conceptual, empirical, and clinical foundations of effective work with this highly challenging population, and Part II describes the process of cognitive-behavioral therapy for each of the specific disorders. Chapters demonstrate the nuts and bolts of differential diagnosis, case conceptualization, and intervention, with particular attention to therapeutic impasses and how to overcome them.

An open-hearted, generous book for couples 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Here is a book I'll recommend to any couple who feels ready to experience a more loving and passionate sexual relationship. Tammy Nelson is an Imago therapist and teacher with two decades of clinical practice. Her skills shine forth not only in the information she offers here, but also in the helpful way the book is organized, with step by step techniques for helping couples recharge their relationships in a variety of situations.

Topics include help for stale-mated partners who "keep score" and for those who "fake it." She offers exercises to deal with the fear, anxiety, control, anger, and resentment that too many couples take to bed with them, and shows ways to express love, trust, appreciation, sensuality, and lusty desire. Other topics include explicit guidance for sexual intimacy that range from massage and genital stimulation to creating sexual rituals. The book concludes with a section on tolerating ecstasy and joy--a problem many people have in our fast-track culture.

If you are a therapist who works with couples--you'll find this book a wonderful resource for you as well as your clients. It spans the divide between couple therapy and sex therapy in a way that guides and educates in a straightforward, collegial manner.

Editorial Review:

A proven couples counseling method applied to sex for the very first time.

Communication problems can erode a relationship in and out of the bedroom. This guide takes a proven communication method, which has been used to counsel millions of couples, and applies it to sex for the very first time. The Imago Relationship Therapy, which was pioneered by Harville Hendrix in the national bestseller and self-help classic Getting the Love You Want, shows readers how to understand and build trust with their partners through a unique form of dialogue.

Getting the Sex You Want teaches readers how to build sexual communication skills quickly and connect with their partner in a new way. Readers learn exercises that enable them to communicate their sexual needs and desires, get past old issues, and revive passion in their relationship.

healings through spiritual guides 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Because Edgar Cayce did not remember any of his healings which were conducted while in a trance like condition, his secretary faithfully wrote every word as they were being prescribed. Because of her dedication to him and his work we have accurate and precise records of each healing. Patients would write back or call and tell him of the success of his medical advice and in that way he was able to continue knowing that his "guides" were trustworthy. Being interested in herbal healing and believing in the ability of certain people to attune themselves to the "other world" and information beyond our present abilities, this collection of just some of Cayce's many healings are educational and remarkable. Cayce had no formal training in medicine allowing his gift as a chairvoyant to help hundreds of people. An interesting book for anyone who wants to learn more about alternative healings and who has an open mind about psychic phenomenon.

Editorial Review:

From Acne to Xeroderma, almost any health problem you are likely to experience has been addressed by Edgar Cayce (the sleeping prophet). I trust Cayce's information and the remedies in the Encyclopedia of Healing are 99 percent common sense: eat healthy, exercise, and reduce the stress in your life. If you're looking for some magic cure, though, you'll likely be disappointed. Keep in mind that most of these remedies were prescribed for individuals with several ailments. For this reason, I wouldn't go swallowing any strange concoctions before getting a professional opinion, but I would trust these case studies as a guide for better living.
