Received book two days after I ordered it. Book was plastic-wrapped and in excellent condition. Would definitely buy from here again; this was a great buying experience.

Editorial Review:

Since the initial publication of this breakthrough work, motivational interviewing (MI) has been used by countless clinicians. Theory and methods have evolved apace, reflecting new knowledge on the process of behavior change, a growing body of outcome research, and the development of new applications within and beyond the addictions field. Extensively rewritten, this revised and expanded second edition now brings MI practitioners and trainees fully up to date. William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick explain how to work through ambivalence to facilitate change, present detailed guidelines for using their approach, and reflect on the process of learning MI. Chapters contributed by other leading experts then address such special topics as MI and the stages-of-change model, applications in medical, public health, and criminal justice settings, and using the approach with groups, couples, and adolescents.

Editorial Review:

For many of us, feelings of deficiency are right around the corner. It doesn’t take much--just hearing of someone else’s accomplishments, being criticized, getting into an argument, making a mistake at work--to make us feel that we are not okay. Beginning to understand how our lives have become ensnared in this trance of unworthiness is our first step toward reconnecting with who we really are and what it means to live fully.
--from Radical Acceptance

Radical Acceptance

“Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering,” says Tara Brach at the start of this illuminating book. This suffering emerges in crippling self-judgments and conflicts in our relationships, in addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork--all the forces that keep our lives constricted and unfulfilled. Radical Acceptance offers a path to freedom, including the day-to-day practical guidance developed over Dr. Brach’s twenty years of work with therapy clients and Buddhist students.

Writing with great warmth and clarity, Tara Brach brings her teachings alive through personal stories and case histories, fresh interpretations of Buddhist tales, and guided meditations. Step by step, she leads us to trust our innate goodness, showing how we can develop the balance of clear-sightedness and compassion that is the essence of Radical Acceptance. Radical Acceptance does not mean self-indulgence or passivity. Instead it empowers genuine change: healing fear and shame and helping to build loving, authentic relationships. When we stop being at war with ourselves, we are free to live fully every precious moment of our lives.

The opinions of an experienced therapist 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In this book Dr. Yalom gives practical suggestion and guidance to new therapist regarding things to do and avoid during therapy session. The book is written in a simple language making it an easy read. There are 85 chapters each being about 1-3 pages long. For the most part, the chapters are not based on any psychological orientations, except that the "here and now" approach is discussed. Some chapters may be obvious to the reader and others may be considered the opinion of an experienced therapist. Overall, it is a useful book for new therapists, therapists in training, and patients.

Editorial Review:

Anyone interested in psychotherapy or personal growth will rejoice at the publication of The Gift of Therapy, a masterwork from one of today's most accomplished psychological thinkers.

From his thirty-five years as a practicing psychiatrist and as an award-winning author, Irvin D. Yalom imparts his unique wisdom in The Gift of Therapy. This remarkable guidebook for successful therapy is, as Yalom remarks, "an idiosyncratic mÉlange of ideas and techniques that I have found useful in my work. These ideas are so personal, opinionated, and occasionally original that the reader is unlikely to encounter them elsewhere. I selected the eighty-five categories in this volume randomly guided by my passion for the task rather than any particular order or system."

At once startlingly profound and irresistibly practical, Yalom's insights will help enrich the therapeutic process for a new generation of patients and counselors.

You really should read this book if you're interested in contemporary attachment theory. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I'm a doctoral student in clinical psych and I loved this book. While it somewhat deepened my depth of knowledge concerning attachment in psychotherapy, moreso it does an excellent job of showing how it directly relates to what you actually do in a session. It's coverage of and relavence to the current analytic climate (e.g. relational psychoanalysis/intersubjectivity theory) is excellent and supplemented by a thorough discussion of the current empirical evidence coming to our field via related fields (e.g. neuropsych research, cognitive science, etc.). I would recommend this book to any student as part of their graduate training in clinical psych or as an accompanying text to a graduate level psychodynamic or developmental course.

Editorial Review:

This eloquent book translates attachment theory and research into an innovative framework that grounds adult psychotherapy in the facts of childhood development. Advancing a model of treatment as transformation through relationship, the author integrates attachment theory with neuroscience, trauma studies, relational psychotherapy, and the psychology of mindfulness. Vivid case material illustrates how therapists can tailor interventions to fit the attachment needs of their patients, thus helping them to generate the internalized secure base for which their early relationships provided no foundation. Demonstrating the clinical uses of a focus on nonverbal interaction, the book describes powerful techniques for working with the emotional responses and bodily experiences of patient and therapist alike.

Choose a Different Book to Purchase 1 out of 5 stars.

This review is directed to anyone deciding whether to purchase this book and also read this book. Save your time and your money; there are books far better than this one. I don't agree with any of the 5 star ratings people gave this book. The authors are writing from an ego-centered perspective; they are critical of the patients they use in examples, and they are critical of readers in that they don't believe any of us are able to "self-help" correctly. If we are not able to self-help, it is because they do not explain how in this book.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I have never posted a review on this site before despite buying hundreds of books. I purchased this book about two months ago because of severe anxiety issues. I have recieved immediate benefits from it. The concept of awfulizing has truly changed my outlook on my entire thought process. While I know I have a long road to follow I believe this book has put me on the right track. I would highly recommend giving this book a try if you are dealing with depression or anxiety. Best of luck.

Editorial Review:

Since its development in the 1960s as a structured, short-term psychotherapy for depression, cognitive therapy has come of age. Today the approach is successfully applied in the treatment of a broad range of psychological disorders, an evolution reflected in the myriad titles now available. Regardless of the disorder, all these applications are based on core, underlying principles, which are clearly articulated in this volume. Providing readers with a solid foundation for practice, Cognitive Therapy: Basics and Beyond delineates the fundamental building blocks of cognitive conceptualization and treatment.

Written in a clear, step-by-step style, this text helps therapists sharpen their conceptualization skills, plan more effective treatment, expand their repertoire of techniques, and trouble-shoot difficulties. Throughout the volume, the author offers clinical examples and transcripts drawn from one patient's treatment to illuminate the narrative and illustrate cognitive therapy in action.

Introductory chapters describe how to conceptualize clients according to the cognitive model, plan and conduct the first session, identify initial problems and goals, and structure therapy within and across sessions. Then the basic steps for conducting cognitive therapy are presented, with specific instruction on how to identify, evaluate, and respond to a client's automatic thoughts. Effective strategies for modifying underlying assumptions and core beliefs are also explicated.

Methods for increasing homework compliance, preparing for termination, and preventing relapse are laid out. Even experienced cognitive therapists will find new strategies and insights in chapters on planning treatment, diagnosing problems, using imagery, and bringing about behavioral change.

In addition to numerous practical suggestions, this volume features a variety of sample patient worksheets and appendices that detail resource materials and reading lists for both the practitioner and the client. A final chapter offers guidance in progressing as a cognitive therapist.

An important resource for any therapist's shelf, Cognitive Therapy: Basics and Beyond is necessary reading for the practitioner or student new to cognitive therapy who wants to learn about this tested approach, and for the clinician already practicing cognitive therapy who wants to learn the cutting-edge strategies of conceptualization and treatment.

Great Text! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was a very thorough and easy-to-read book about the various theories of counseling and psychotherapy. I, personally, often need "supplemental" things to go with a text to help me learn the material. This book did a great job of explaining the concepts, comparing and contrasting theories, and giving examples of practice and assessment. Although someone else that wrote a review didn't particularly care for the student manual, I found it extremely helpful while preparing for my exams. I read the chapters first, and actually enjoyed the readings, and found that "brushing up" with the student manual before my exam was very helpful, and reinforced the theoretical concepts. Also, the Case Study book was required for my class, and is an excellent source for understanding the theories "in action", so to speak. When learning these types of theories, it is very helpful having concrete examples to work with, and Corey does an excellent job with that. Over all, a great text, with lots of info that is clearly illustrated with examples and case studies.

Editorial Review:

This latest edition of Jerry Corey's best-seller helps students develop a personalized style of counseling that incorporates the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience. Warm, personal, and easy to understand, Corey's book covers nine contemporary theories and then demonstrates how each theory can be applied to a single case (Stan).

Evidence Based Treatment Now Included 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This 4th edition of the Child Psychotherapy Treatment Planner has been revised to include Evidence Based Treatment (EBT) Objectives and Interventions. The latest research evidence has been integrated into the content of most of the chapters. Those Objectives and Interventions that go beyond "Best Practice" to being based on replicable reseach results are highlighted with an EBT symbol. Now the reader can be assured that all the latest research has been reviewed and suggestions for treatment based on successful results are noted in those chapters where research evidence exists. Where there is not sufficient research evidence available for a presenting problem, best practice interventions continue to be suggested. As federal funding sources as well as some other third party payers are beginning to insist on treatment based on research evidence, this Planner offers just such Interventions.

Please be reminded that all of our psychotherapy suggestions assume a compassionate relationship of empathy that is crucial for effective treatment. Good psychotherapists realize the critical importance of a therapeutic relationship while delivering research informed treatment.

Editorial Review:

Includes 14 new problems, a step-by-step guide to writing treatment plans, more than 1,000 prewritten goals, and more. Previous edition, c1996, was titled The Child & Adolescent Treatment Planner. Includes disk. Softcover, softcover without disk was listed in approval week 2000-11.

Thank you Dr. Rothschild 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is wonderful. It is the best of many books I have read on trauma's effects and the treatment of trauma survivors. As a survivor myself, I found the book immensely calming. It illuminated many things I did not notice and explained so many parts of myself that I have lost touch with or no longer understand. Most importantly, it gave truly effective ways of communicating with myself and my body in order to calm myself and learn effective coping mechanisms.

Aside from all that, the book is just plain interesting. The mind-body connection is a fascinating thing. Wow!

Good for lay person and provider alike 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read this book cover to cover. I found it extremely easy to read. I have recommended this book to several of my colleagues that assist patients with trauma. I feel like this book could be also given to patients. I felt it contained enough biological data to assist persons to understand the basis for the trauma response.

Editorial Review:

Traumatised people hold a memory of that trauma in their brains and bodies. This is the first book to link this phenomenon of somatic memory and the impact of trauma on the body. Reducing the chasm between scentific theory and clinical practice, Rothschild presents techniques for addressing the memory in the body.

Inspirational Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is an inspiration and must read for everyone looking for meaning in their lives. It's empowering and brings such freedom and space to learn how to identify our thoughts and make a change which Alex Pattakos teaches based on Viktor Frankl's principles.

Editorial Review:

How do I find meaning in my life? How can I find meaning in my work? World-renowned psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" is one of the most important books of modern times. Frankl's personal story of finding a reason to live in the most horrendous of circumstances-Nazi concentration camps-has inspired millions. Now, "Prisoners of Our Thoughts" applies Frankl's philosophy and therapeutic approach to life and work in the 21st Century, detailing seven principles for increasing your capacity to deal with life-work challenges, finding meaning in your daily life and work, and achieving your highest potential. This paperback edition includes a new chapter on how readers of the hardcover edition have put the seven principles into action, both in their everyday lives and even in extreme situations such as Indonesia after the tsunami (where several aid agencies adopted the book as part of their training programs) and in post-Katrina New Orleans.
