Excellent, thorough, sensitive 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I found this book deeply satisfying as a way to deepen my coaching skills. It's about the philosophy behind coaching, and has great dialogues with clients, from which I learned a lot. Warm, engaging, and based in the literature, this book is sensitive to what coaches can do to really benefit their clients.

Feeds the Intellect and Warms the Heart 5 out of 5 stars.

Patrick Williams and Diane Menendez succeeded in creating a masterful volume - Becoming a Professional Life Coach - that surpasses in its depth and scope any other coaching book that I have read to date.
Beginning with an in depth history of development of coaching and its evolution from therapy, it continues highlighting use of theories of human development i.e. Moslow, Robert Kegan, and Ken Wilbur.
The authors introduce the reader to fundamental concepts and skills of coaching to the most advanced concepts of human potential, the importance of interplay of body, human emotions and perception, values, life purpose
and, importantly, to the healing powers of love.
Every coach, regardless of specialty, will be enriched each time the book is referenced.

Claiming he had discovered the "royal road to the unconscious,” Sigmund Freud published The Interpretation of Dreams at the turn of the twentieth century, and thus laid the foundation for his innovative technique of psychoanalysis. Largely ignored at first, the book would eventually be considered Freud’s most important work, one that, like Darwin’s The Origin of Species, revolutionized the way human beings view themselves.

The raw material for The Interpretation of Dreams was provided by Freud himself. Spurred on by the death of his father, he began analyzing his own dreams, in the process recreating lost childhood memories and uncovering the roots of his own neuroses. He concluded that dreams were filled with latent meaning, their bizarre imagery and peculiar narratives concealing deep-seated, instinctual motives and desires. For example, his own problems stemmed from a repressed desire for his mother and hostility towards his father—the now-famous Oedipal complex. By revealing how the seemingly trivial nonsense of dreams reflect important personal issues in the dreamer’s present and past life, Freud created a key that unlocked the vital secrets of the unconscious mind.

A fascinating and beautifully written book, The Interpretation of Dreams is an indefinable masterpiece that helped shape the mind of the twentieth century.

Editorial Review:

Essential Psychopharmacology explains the neurobiological concepts underlying the drug treatment of psychiatric disorders, with particular emphasis on the principles of chemical neurotransmission. For the student learning psychopharmacology for the first time, this book provides an easily readable introduction to the subject. For the physician or scientist with prior background in the field, the book is organised to provide a quick review of the key dimensions of psychopharmacology and the drug treatment of mental illness. The clearly written text is supplemented by a wealth of high-quality colour graphics that are both instructive and entertaining. These illustrations and their captions may be used independently of the main text for a rapid introduction to the field, or for review. Covering both the neurobiology of drug action, and the range of psychiatric disorders and their treatments, this book will indeed be an essential text for students, scientists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals.

An intro to NLP 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Milton Erickson is legendary for his work in hypnosis. This book is a great introduction to his ways of using language to induce trance states. It is a good intro into NLP (neurolinguistic psycotherapy). i think it is more useful as a reference book for those interested in neuropsychology but it reads well in straight reading format as well.

Great, but not an easy read 5 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful, but not easy to read. This is a must for anyone wanting to understand Milton's linquistic approach to hypnosis. Highly recommended.

Very Informative 5 out of 5 stars.

If you've read Patterns Vol. 1 then you should really read this. Patterns Vol. 1 was very detailed and threw a ton of information at you. There were many techniques and examples given but it was short implementation. That's where Vol. 2 comes in. This book has much of the same info in it as it's predecessor but it glosses over that and gets in deep with how to put all of these techniques together. There's more description on pacing and an emphasis on analogue marking. At the end there are two full length dictations of M.H.E. in action. All of the linguistic devices are spelled out in column fashion making it easy to see how these "patterns" fit together. Reading Vol. 1 and not this would be like watching the first hour and ten minutes of a movie and then not watching the last twenty minutes.

A humble masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book by Carl Rogers on client-centered therapy may lack the drama, the force or the cleverness associated with some books on other forms of psychotherapy. What it doesn't seem to lack is a quiet wisdom that flowed from Rogers' many years of experience and sensitivity to his patients.

Despite some redundancy, being a collection of papers and presentations from Rogers over many years, "On Becoming A Person":

1) presents a branch of psychotherapy distinct from psychoanalysis and learning theories as well as from behaviorism, focused more on basically well people growing than on helping disturbed people get better.

2) is rooted in Roger's positive view of human nature as basically good and constructive, as he discovered in encounters with his patients. Roger's emphasis on empathic understanding, on not imposing theoretical speculations about the clients state of mind and on avoiding forceful interference would seem to avoid some of the abuses associated with some other psychotherapies.

3) presents ideas about the helping relationship that Rogers extended from psychotherapy into other areas such as education. Rogers's nondirective approach suggested to him the possibility of a progressive education free of examinations, of grades, of conclusions, and even of teachers.

4) despite its "fuzziness", Rogers does present some experimental evidence in favor of client-centered therapy as compared to those based on learning theory and behaviorism.

5) Rogers' shows appreciation of the growing power of the behavioral sciences but expresses concern less this science, like other sciences, becomes manipulated by politicians to the detriment of people. He basically wonders, if a culture is to be designed, as Skinner had suggested, what safeguards there are on the designer.

Rogers may seem too rosy and to be cherry-picking his results. The kind of measurements he presents, such as a psychological test measuring "changes in the self" based on self reporting may seem too fuzzy. How long it takes, compared to other available approaches, to get effective change seems not to have been a primary consideration for Rogers and may explain the rise of more recent approaches like Cognitive Therapy and Constructive Living. As a lay person, I respect the humane treatment Rogers recommended toward those entering psychotherapy as clients.

A major contribution by Rogers seems to be his recognition that his clients were not objects to do things to but rather fellow people whose experience he could share in.

Editorial Review:

The late Carl Rogers, founder of the humanistic psychology movement, revolutionized psychotherapy with his concept of "client-centered therapy." His influence has spanned decades, but that influence has become so much a part of mainstream psychology that the ingenious nature of his work has almost been forgotten. A new introduction by Peter Kramer sheds light on the significance of Dr. Rogers's work today. New discoveries in the field of psychopharmacology, especially that of the antidepressant Prozac, have spawned a quick-fix drug revolution that has obscured the psychotherapeutic relationship. As the pendulum slowly swings back toward an appreciation of the therapeutic encounter, Dr. Rogers's "client-centered therapy" becomes particularly timely and important.

A little book with a big message 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Most reference books are large. This one, even with all of the information packed inside, is instead, rather small. In doing the work of owning your own shadow, "what is the purpose of my life?" is a question that can be discovered. Paired with Johnson's "Innerwork," readers can learn to be in touch with and find meaning in the deeper regions of the psyche. To be able to map out a life for oneself amidst the rushing pace and excrement of the sewer that can pass for as life can offer hope to readers who want more as we begin excavating the gold in our own shadows.

A Christian sermon written for Christians 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

After reading the back cover, you'd expect this book to be an analysis of the psyche from a Jungian perspective. Well, you will have been fooled. It's actually a Christian sermon, and if you're not a Christian, you may find the book offensive. A few examples:
Page ix: "Nazareth is now holy to us, the birthplace of the Savior;" Who is "us"?
Page 5: "This is our legacy from having eaten of the fruit of the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden." Whose legacy?
Page 70: "If one were to possess it, one would likely announce that he was God, or equally outlandish, that God was dead. Nietzsche came perilously close to this and paid for it with his sanity." So if one questions the existence of God, one risks going insane? The more prosaic - and accurate - explanation is that apparently Nietzsche had untreated syphilis and this is what led to his mental breakdown.
Page 73: " . . . we must stop and honor the divine as the source of all relationship." So if someone doesn't believe in a Christian god, they don't deserve to be in a relationship?
Page 114: "Christ himself is the intersection of the divine and the human. He is the prototype for the reconciliation of opposites and our guide out of the realm of conflict and duality." Whose guide? Is Johnson saying that because one is not a Christian, he or she is doomed to live in conflict for the rest of his or her life?

Don't say I didn't warn you.

A bestselling author shows how we can reclaim and make peace with the "shadow" side of our personality.

6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

As someone who has long suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder, I can personally attest to the fact that Dr. Norman Rosenthal's seminal work has been instrumental in helping me cope with and ultimately overcome the winter blues. Dr. Rosenthal is an insightful, provocative, and engaging author, with a rare gift for explaining complex scientific ideas in a manner that is accessible to all. I highly recommend this book to anyone who may suffer from SAD or who is the least bit curious about a disorder that affects millions of people.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal's indispensable guide for readers who suffer from the "winter blues" is now more useful than ever. This authoritative book presents a wealth of new information on remedies for seasonal affective disorder (SAD), including recent advances in light therapy, research on the effectiveness of antidepressants, and new recipes to counterbalance unhealthy winter food cravings. Dr. Rosenthal distinguishes among various degrees of the disorder, ranging from winter blues to full-blown SAD; provides a self-test that readers can use to evaluate their own seasonal mood changes; and offers helpful advice, coping tips, and resources.

NPR 5th edition 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The new NPR 5th edition is an excellent resource for anyone needing to prepare for certification for NPR (i.e. ob/neonatal nurses, OB's, pediatricians, perinatologists, etc)

It is easy to read, has repitition that allows reinforcement of principles learned throughout the text. Quizzes appear throughout to assist in retention and integration of information.

The DVD-ROM included in the book is improved over the last one. For the visual learner, this is most helpful. The DVD-ROM includes, computer generated images, scenarios, and the book quizzes as well. An excellent adjunct to the book, that can be used as a stand-alone review.

There are a few discrepancies between the book and the DVD-ROM, but overall the set together is worth the price.

There is also the availability to take the NPR written examination on-line and then locate an instructor to complete the practical sessions. This is helpful for any busy practitioner when needing to schedule this exam, since the written component has close to 100 questions.

Editorial Review:

This textbook on neonatal resuscitation provides students with a complete self-study programme, including case scenarios for each major resuscitation technique. With the text is an interactive CD-ROM, including video of actual resuscitations, 3-D demonstrations and other visuals not in the book.

Great for Beginners 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book for anyone trying to determine their self-defeating behaviors. My favorite aspect of this book is the quick "Usable Insights" at the end of each mini chapter. For example, Chapter 12 is titled "Focusing on What Your Partner is Doing Wrong." The Usable Insight at the end of this chapter is "If you really want to work on your relationship, watch your partner's efforts, not just your own" (Goulston and Goldberg 52). The authors then provide seven bullets on how you can use this insight in the "Taking Action" section.

Although I enjoyed this book, I only gave it four stars because I think it is somewhat geared towards self-help beginners. If you have read many self-help books of this nature, most of the discussion in this book will be old hat for you. I personally did not find any new insights, but it was a good way to refresh knowledge I learned from previous books. Also, the book does not provide any in depth analysis ever. It breezes through the sections very quickly, and provides more of an overview of the larger problem. If you have a very serious self-defeating behavior, you will want to find a book geared specifically towards that area.

Editorial Review:

Procrastination...Envy...Anger...Self-pity...Compulsion....In any of its many forms, self-defeating behavior is the single most common reason that people seek psychotherapy. It is a poison that prevents people from achieving the love, success, and happiness they desire. Get Out of Your Own Way is an antidote, explaining the reasons for self-sabotage by going back to the childhood origins of various behaviors. With anecdotes and usable insights drawn from twenty years of psychiatric clinical practice, Dr. Mark Goulston shares ideas that have helped thousands of patients overcome pain, fear, and confusion-to approach life's challenges with dignity, wisdom, courage, and even humor.
