Manually stultifying a discipline 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Manual of the American Psychological Association has been around in successive editions for many years and continues to set the standard for the ways in which psychologists write and communicate their discipline. Publication manuals can be necessary and there is no doubt that when the APA first established the Manual there was a need, in the era of print technology with type setting and proof editing, for precise rules on tabular settings, figure descriptions etc. The problem for today is that the continued need for such rules to guide the printer has become enshrined with a style of writing and reporting that dates from the same era. As has been pointed out several times elsewhere, the Manual was first written at the time when American psychology was dominated by the Behaviorist paradigm and by methodological operationalism. Behaviorism eschewed certain kinds of psychological states and operationalism specified only particular ways in which processes and methods could be described. Both of these paradigms have been long overturned and psychology is no longer confined by such restraints. But still the style is used to restrict the ways that young, incoming members of the profession and science are taught to write and therefore, oftentimes, to think about their subject matter and the people that they are studying. In America such restraints may only be imposed at the level of graduate study and the student will have reserves of thought and style that resist such intrusions. In other parts of the world, such restrictions are imposed from the very beginning of the undergraduate degree. Students therefore learn to think about people and operations in a way that narrows the descriptions and the thought processes that are applied to the issues and problems. If the APA was the only outlet with such restrictions, these effects would be a cause for regret but not despair. The APA style, however, has been adopted by virtually all of psychological publishing houses, so there are few escape routes. It is not a matter simply of putting the references in the correct form; it is about thinking about subject matter in severely restricted ways.
It is probably too late to hope for any change in the ways in which the APA Manual is used and further procreated. But it is a case study, worthy of serious study, of how the past, lived and recorded with good intentions, can continue to stifle the present and the future. The APA Manual has become functionally autonomous, affecting thinking but with little or no continuity with the past. To a degree it is pathological in form and, worse than that, it is a pathogen that is severely infectious.

Ideal Text 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

David Myers has done something incredible: written a near perfect textbook that can be used both at the AP and university level. Obsessively up to date, and an occasional quip so you can have a laugh. The book is balanced with physiological explanations as well as some representative behavioral treatments. The text is now a standard for beginning level psychology.

Stefplans 2 out of 5 stars.

I thought this would be a more helpful book than the APA Publication Manual, but I was wrong. This small volume does not cover enough items that I need to write a graduate level paper. I suggest purchasing only the Publication Manual.

APA guidlines review 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

good reference for research papers, only wished it had better examples easier to locate instead of having to read every chapter to search for format.

Editorial Review:

The Concise Rules of APA Style will NOT be a replacement book for the Publication Manual, 5e. Rather, it will be a "true" companion product. Concise Rules will be an easy, look-up reference guide for writers and students that use the Publication Manual, 5e. It will be smaller in size and not include a lot of the information that is found in our top selling, Publication Manual, 5e product. The Concise Rules of APA Style will solely focus on the rules of APA Style. Students and writers will want to have both titles available on their shelf for understanding the rules to APA Style and writing effectively.

Very good and clear book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This was one of my favorite classes in college and this book was very supplemental to my professor's lectures. The text was very clear and there were really good examples to help get the point across. It was nice because it was very concise and to the point.

Abnormal Psychology & Video Presentations in Abnormal 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A good for the understanding of abnormal psychology. This is highly recommended for the undergraduate study. The book is rather dry but does contain valuable information.

Editorial Review:

An award-winning instructor and practicing therapist, Ronald Comer brings an unmatched range of experience and depth of understanding to the teaching of abnormal psychology. It is that firsthand knowledge of the concerns of students, the complexities of the disorders, and the real struggles of people with psychological disorders that makes Comer’s text, Abnormal Psychology, so compelling.

This Sixth Edition’s new content and features, coupled with new study and teaching tools, all serve to keep the book’s portrait of contemporary abnormal psychology as fresh and insightful as ever.

APA style 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is really helpful if you use APA style alot otherwise you can use the online resources instead.

A Style Manual lacking, uh, Style 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have to admit, the book lost me on page one with the sickening "According to Merriam-Websters Collegiate Dictionary, style is " a convention with respect..." blah blah. Is that the best of your collective efforts?

So, with that grabber of an opener, the reader is treated to an oddly reverent discussion on APA style. As the other reviewers stated, it isn't a reference in any form. I suppose, if one were really, really committed to the APA style they could wade through this book and learn the in's and out's of the style. Outside of a class specifically on that topic, I can't imagine anyone spending the time to complete the lessons.

So, I will purchase a reference book and learn an important lesson on reading the book description carefully.

Editorial Review:

Really Makes the DSM IV Understandable 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

With its interesting clinical vignettes, this book makes the information in the DSM IV palatable. The DSM IV is a huge book loaded with information and facts. THIS book helps to make the diagnoses real and personal. I enjoyed reading it not just to study for my Licensed Mental Health Counselor test but also as an interesting guidebook to mental health disorders.

Editorial Review:

Accessibly written and easy to use, this comprehensive book covers everything professionals and students need to know about DSM-IV. Following the same format as DSM-IV, the text presents every diagnosis. For each it includes case examples, a detailed analysis of each case, and a clear explanation of how to arrive at the diagnosis and how to rule out other possibilities. Essential for all mental health practitioners studying for their licensing exams, this hands-on resource will be valued by psychiatrists, residents, psychologists, marriage and family counselors, social workers, and anyone who needs to know about DSM-IV.

Essential for honoring any psychiatry rotation 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The mini-DSM IV is an excellent resource. It's like the big fat one without all the unnecessary weight. I used it mainly for looking up mental disorder criteria while on rounds or during morning report. It also fits nicely in your pocket and impresses the attendings and residents. Anything to show them your commitment goes a long way towards a good evaluation at the end of the rotation. I mainly used this and the pocket pharmacopoeia on the wards and studied from NMS Psych at home, though I'm told First Aid for Psych is much better for home study.

I've never really been interested in psych so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. On the other hand I got great evals on the rotation with this and other materials.

I'd probably buy this book again if I hadn't already completed my psych rotation. It'll serve me well on other rotations when I need to refer to psych for something. It's worth the slightly high dollar amount ascribed to it.

Clinician's Thesaurus, 6th Edition: The Guide to Conducting Interviews and Writing Psychological Reports (Clinician's Toolbox, T 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The format of this book is a little tricky, and it took me a few days to gain a comprehensive overview. However, this book does offer a lot of good information about the assessment and treatment plan writing process, including some examples. All in all, a useful book to add to your home library as a reference guide if you are a worker in the mental health field, or student.
