The book treats many cases and reaches high level of coverage; it is very helpful, that in practice one can find many similarities, since the cases are very realistic and explained in depth. My opinion is, that it is valuable because it is applicable.

I got exactly what I thought I was buying. This is a really convenient way to have a textbook, because you can just stick it in a three-ring binder and take it with you! Also, you can just take a few chapters if you want, or the whole book! The pages are a little thin, but it's a wonderful educational textbook. As a B.A. in psychology, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to have a great learning experience and a textbook that doesn't cost a fortune.

Does not help at all 2 out of 5 stars.
39 of 45 people found this review helpful.

I actually returned this book because it had very little , if anything, to do with WHY you actually compulsively eat. it did not go into or even explained the psychological factors that influence C.O. all this book talk about is how women's self-image is polluted with diet ads etc, etc. it does not deal at all with how to actually stop, in an effective way.

same thing as Overcoming Overeating. the whole point of the book is to stop dieting and to stop having a dieting mentality. also it doe snot deal with the actual cause of you overeating ( which is not dieting)

if you really want to overcome overeating and end your obsession with food, you need to know why you are physiologically addicted to food. why you find so much pleasure in it. and for that you have to read books with substantial research, not just a feminist sound-off.

read : the pleasure trap, LIfe is hard- food is easy , to name a few good ones.

but this one and her other one won't help you at all.

Simple, practical, useful, effective 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

The premise of this book is that events or people don't make up you angry or upset, it's what you think about them that does. WIth this in mind, Ellis and Lange lay out a simple approach that you can use to keep on a more even keel. The essence is that you can challenge your own thinking, which often has at its root some sort of irrational belief in the way things should be. Then replace those beliefs with more rational ones. It is a non-manipulative, ethical approach. You can practice this technique on "small" problems and gain confidence that you will handle larger problems better.

self help through stories 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is a self help book that helps the reader by going through various scenarios and cognitive therapy. It gives you the right way of doing things and the wrong way (it's very black and white). Check it out sometime.

An excellent guide to sources that can help us to "make a real difference" in our lives 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Previously, I read and reviewed Tom Butler-Bowdon's 50 Self-Help Classics and 50 Success Classics and was not surprised to find that his most recently published volume in the "50 Classics" series is their equal in terms of the quality and value of the material provided. Butler-Bowdon employs essentially the same format for the three volumes: brief background on each source, major insights, final comments, and mini-bio of author. The "great thinkers" he discusses in 50 Psychology Classics are also organized in alphabetical order, although I would have preferred (one man's opinion) that they had been organized within discrete thematic clusters, and not in alphabetical order but in terms of sequence of influence. Sigmund Freud followed by Carl Jung and Alfred Adler and then Anna Freud followed by B.F. Skinner, for example. Frankly, as I checked out the table of contents, I was initially surprised to see Edward de Bono, Howard Gardner, Malcolm Gladwell, Daniel Goleman, Steven Pinker, Gail Sheehy, and William Styron among the "iconic figures" listed so I read their segments first and, sure enough, Butler-Bowdon explains the inclusion of each.

In the Introduction, he provides an overview on the development of modern psychology as a field of study, once "early titans" (e.g. Williams James, Sigmund Freud, Jung, and Adler) had written books that the general public could understand. Within the Introduction, he also suggests seven themes that offer different perspectives on "who we are, how we think, and what we do" and assigns to each a cluster of relevant commentaries. Readers can then decide which themes are of greatest interest to them, and, on which selections to focus. For example, five sources are suggested for "Tapping the unconscious mind: Wisdom of a different kind." They are:

The Gift of Fear (Gavin de Becker)
My Voice Will Go With You (Milton Erickson by Sidney Rosen)
The Interpretation of Dreams (Sigmund Freud)
Blink (Malcolm Gladwell)
The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious (Carl Jung)

I read some books cover-to-cover sequentially; with others, I hop around back and forth in random fashion; with still others, I read strategically after checking out the table of contents, as I did with this one. My guess (only a guess) is the latter approach will work best for most readers and many may decide what to read and in what order after reviewing the seven thematic clusters in the Introduction. For those who feel overwhelmed by the number of books in print and need help selecting what will be of greatest interest to them, the volumes in the "50 Classics" series will be especially valuable.

I view Butler-Bowdon is an erudite "travel agent" for readers, but also as an enthusiastic "tour guide" who then accompanies them from one "landmark" to the next. One of this book's several value-added benefits is that Butler-Bowdon discusses several authors and works of which many (if not most) of his readers may have been previously unaware. He also does a skillful job of comparing and contrasting perspectives on a specific subject as in this volume, for example, when noting that a "central idea in Adlerian psychology is that individuals are always striving toward a goal. Whereas Freud saw us as driven by what was in our past, Adler had a teleological view - they we are driven by our goals, whether they are conscious or not."

Those who share my regard for this book are urged to check out the other volumes in the "50 Classics" series. To those in business, I also highly recommend several volumes in the Capstone reference series written by Des Dearlove, notably The Ultimate Book of Business Thinking.

Editorial Review:

Tom Bulter-Bowdon is now recognized as an expert in personaldevelopment literature. His 50 Classics series has been hailed asthe definitive guide to "the literature of possibility," and has wonnumerous awards including the Benjamin Franklin Self-Help Award andForeword Magazine's Book of the Year Award. A graduate of the LondonSchool of Economics and the University of Sydney, he lives and works inboth the UK and Australia.

Editorial Review:

Four years after the introduction of the revised Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the MMPI-2 is regarded throughout the world as a unique, invaluable instrument. Completely revised and updated, MMPI-2: Assessing Personality and Psychopathology, Second Edition encompasses all that has been learned about the original and revised tests. An interpretive strategy is presented and illustrated with several cases. A new section has been added concerning how feedback on MMPI-2 results should be presented to clients. The chapter on supplementary scales includes information about two new alcohol abuse scales and a marital distress scale. The book critically analyzes the use of the MMPI-2 with special groups, such as older adults, ethnic minorities, medical patients, correctional subjects, and subjects in nonclinical settings. An expanded chapter addresses the psychometric characteristics of the original MMPI and of the MMPI-2 and includes information concerning comparability of the two tests. Computerized use of the MMPI-2 is considered and a computerized interpretation is compared with a clinician-generated interpretation. The development of the MMPI-A, the adolescent version of the test, is presented along with a detailed approach to interpreting the results of this new test. This book is essential to students in personality assessment courses learning about the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A as well as to professionals who use these two tests in research and clinical work.

User friendly. One textbook you're liable to keep. 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Interviewing textbooks are notoriously dry and mechanical. I can count using the fingers of one hand the number of books I have read on the subject that are worth their weight in cotton candy.

This work by the Sommers-Flanagan duo represents an excellent addition to the instructional literature on the fine art of interviewing. They use an wonderful blend of humor, humanity, sound advice and counsel, and theory.

Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

This clinical interviewing primer blends a personal and easy-to-read style with an emphasis on both the scientific foundations and interpersonal aspects of mental health interviewing. Written from an integrative/eclectic perspective, this second edition incorporates modifications made necessary by the rise of managed care and revised thinking in the field relating to DSM-IV. Providing provocative examples and case anecdotes, it contains new chapters on suicide assessment interviewing, interviewing teens, couples, and families, and multicultural interviewing, as well as stress management techniques for the interviewer.

An excellent resource 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I really like the way this book is organized. Each topic is broken down into the same few areas, making reference easy. The language is easy to understand and the charts are helpful for studying. The case studies are also helpful in getting a full understanding.

The best book on general psychiatry. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book promises to present psychiatry with the right mix of brain and mind. The first part of the book, gives an elegant introduction to the biopsychosocial framework, and summarizes the aspects of psychology, sociology, and anthropolgy that informs the subject. A great case (The mayor of Wino park, an alcoholic with bipolar illness) is used to illustrate the science and art of psychiatric interviewing, differential diagnosis, and biopsychosocial planning and treatment.
The next part of the book details psychopathology, categorized to obey the DSM-IV format, and offer very useful illustrative case examples.
The last part of the book gives a great summary of treatments in psychiatry, be them somatic, psychological, or social.
I would say that this is probably the most readable text on general psychiatry.
Even though it is geared toward medical students, I believe it is very appropriate for residents and practicioners, since it covers the core of the subject, and coveys all that is worth remembering.
The only drawback of the book is that it is relatively outdated. A newer edition that incorporates the many new changes over the past seven years is well overdue.

Editorial Review:

This edition of this popular text continues as a comprehensive and balanced introduction to general psychiatry for students and practitioners. Updated features include the latest diagnostic algorithms, new nomenclature from DSM-IV, updated coverage of neuroscience and psychopharmacology. Includes extensive clinical vignettes and case summaries.

Editorial Review:

This book provides a detailed overview of mediation, from the premediation conference through all stages of the mediation session. It guides the new mediator through the mediation process by answering the one hundred questions most frequently asked by new mediators. The book has been used successfully for self-instruction and as a training manual. Experienced mediators and attorneys who represent clients in mediation will also find this book extremely useful. The Appendix 'Everything You Never Wanted to Know About the Rules of Evidence' is especially valuable for the non-attorney mediator, who must often deal with the evidentiary vocabulary of the legal profession. You will learn to establish your authority as a mediator, schedule the mediation session, deliver the mediator's opening statement, prioritise issues, preside during joint sessions, conduct private caucuses, overcome impasses, identify 'hidden agenda' and 'throwaway' items, deal with parties who lack settlement authority, and aid parties to achieve a viable settlement.
