Editorial Review:

It’s said if you want to succeed, watch successful people and do what they do. Simply Irresistible is a humorous manual of case studies that show how the greatest sirens of history did what they did and got what they wanted, nearly all the time. Our role models-many of whom are still weaving their charms today- include Eva Peron, Greta Garbo, Coco Chanel, Nigella Lawson, Angelina Jolie, Edith Piaf, Lucretia Borgia, Anne Boleyn, Mata Hari, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Simply Irresistible gives practical, sexy, and sometimes downright outrageous advice on modern seduction. It exalts the siren archetypes of the Companion, Competitor, Goddess, Mother, and Sex Kitten. The cheeky histories of the iconic real-life women are paired with a fun array of quizzes, quotes, photos, tongue-in-cheek captions, and personal stories of triumph and tragedy. (Mata Hari and Anne Boleyn were, after all, both executed.) The wisdom of these famous sirens is fleshed out with the contributions of everyday, lesser known charismatic women. The conclusion? All women have an inner siren-the ability to bring men to their knees-just waiting to come out. Now they’ll know how.

An excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

In The Spiritual Brain, Dr. Beauregard explains why his research on the brain states of 15 Carmelite nuns shows that religious, mystical, and spiritual experiences cannot be explained away as merely a "God spot" in the brain or a "God gene". He states that the findings of his study do not "prove that mystics contact a power outside of themselves", but that "to the extent that spiritual experiences are experiences in which we contact the reality of our universe, we should expect them to be complex. We can certainly say that the patterns of the serious mystics definitely are."
An excellent book, and not just for the insight you will gain into how Dr. Beauregard's neuroscience research has led him to conclude that religious, spiritual, and mystical experiences are real and not merely a product of the functioning of a brain, but also for the shear scope of topics covered in addressing the validity of a non-materialist belief system. No stone is unturned as the reader is introduced to the leading thinkers, researchers and ideas related to the subject of a non-material mind in fields ranging from quantum mechanics and artificial intelligence to PSI phenomena and near death experiences. I highly recommend his book.

Editorial Review:

Does religious experience come from God, or is it just the random firing of neurons in the brain? The Spiritual Brain proves that genuine, life-changing spiritual events can be documented. The authors make a convincing case for what many in science are loathe to consider---that it is God who creates our spiritual experiences, not the brain.

Editorial Review:

There has never been another era in modern history, even during wartime or the Great Depression, when so many people have feared so much. Three out of four Americans say they feel more fearful today then they did twenty years ago. The Culture of Fear describes the high costs of living in a fear-ridden environment where realism has become rarer than doors without deadbolts. Why do we have so many fears these days? Are we living in exceptionally dangerous times? To watch the news, you’d certainly think so, but Glassner demonstrates that it is our perception of danger that has increased, not the actual level of risk. The Culture of Fear is an expose of the people and organizations that manipulate our perceptions and profit from our fears: politicians who win elections by heightening concerns about crime and drug use even as rates for both are declining; advocacy groups that raise money by exaggerating the prevalence of particular diseases; TV newsmagazines that monger a new scare every week to garner ratings.Glassner spells out the prices we pay for social panics: the huge sums of money that go to waste on unnecessary programs and products as well as time and energy spent worrying about our fears.

Editorial Review:

True intimacy and the spiritual gratification that comes from it is our birthright. Yet so many of us suffer from the inability to attain truth, respect, and lasting love in our relationships. Now, in her first book in over ten years, Pia Mellody -- author of the groundbreaking bestsellers Facing Codependence and Facing Love Addiction -- shares her wisdom on how to sustain true intimacy and trusting love in our most important relationships. Drawing from more than twenty years' experience as a counselor at the renowned Meadows Treatment Center in Arizona, Mellody writes about her current findings on what makes intimate relationships work -- and what makes them falter. Using the most up-to-date research and real-life examples, including her own compelling personal journey, Mellody provides us with profoundly insightful and practical guidelines for creating relationships that achieve and maintain joyous intimacy.

Learning how to communicate is at the heart of Mellody's work, and The Intimacy Factor teaches us the crucial language of talking and listening boundaries. Included are tried-and-true ground rules for com-municating with our partner without fear. By following Mellody's practical guidelines, we can put ourselves on the path to true intimacy -- a path that will lead us to our spiritual well-being. If we recover from the psychological damage that keeps us from intimacy, we will learn to experience renewed self-esteem, personal power, and faith, which give us the ability to have intimate relationships in the first place.

Ultimately, The Intimacy Factor will show us how sustaining healthy relation-ships can encourage spiritual principles in our lives and, in turn, cultivate our au-thentic self, freeing us to accept our own limitations and to be perfectly imperfect.

Ekman is better than he is given credit 5 out of 5 stars.
120 of 123 people found this review helpful.

Dr Eckman may disappoint his readers by not giving them what they want: A simple protocol for determining whether or not someone is lying. There is a simple reason: There isn't one.

Other books will defraud the reader by giving them techniques that in reality don't work. Dr Eckman pounds in one central point - that there is no one single way to detect dishonesty. He calls any belief to the contrary "the Brokaw Hazard," named after Tom Brokaw, who believes that circumlocution is the omnipresent sentinel of a lie. He also develops the concept of the "Othello Error," that cautions the reader against actually causing lie signals by accident (named after the literary Othello, who assumed that his wife's sobbing was for her lover, but in reality she was sobbing because of her husband's rage over the incorrectly presumed affair.). He gives many tips, including a checklist in an appendix that might help the reader to detect lies, but most of the material is embedded deep within the text. He helps the reader to develop a dynamic approach to detecting lies; approaches that are developed as detection begins. He exhorts the reader to use NUMEROUS well-defined clues to develop the case for the conclusion that someone is lying.

The biggest flaw in the book is on its cover. The cover suggests that this is a practical book. It is more of a research paper. This is what makes it reliable - the fact that such a complete study is contained within. But the average reader will look for a standard protocol for detecting lies - but the Brokaw Hazard tells us there is none.

Editorial Review:

"Distills 15 years of scientific study of nonverbal communication and the clues to deception. Mr. Ekman {is} a pioneer in emotions research and nonverbal communication. . . . Accurate, intelligent, informative, and thoughtful."--Carol Z. Malatesta, New York Times Book Review. Photographs.

The results of the experiments in this book are astounding and make you think about what your own reaction would be.

Fascinating.....a must read! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Just finished reading Obedience to Authority for a graduate seminar, and must say that it is one of the more relevant and insightful books I've read during my training. In this highly ambitious book, Milgram, motivated in large part by the large-scale and gruesome acts against humanity that occurred during WWII, sets himself to the task of identifying the conditions under which "people would defy authority in the face of a clear moral imperative". To his (and this reviewer's) surprise, he finds that when ordinary individuals are commanded by figures of authority to carry out morally reprehensible acts, they lack the intrapersonal resources required to disobey. While his method of inquiry may be shocking by today's standards, I find his experimental designs, variable manipulations, and theoretical contributions as elegant in their simplicity and highly illuminating.

To that end, I strongly recommend this book to scholars and engaged citizens. Not only is it a fascinating read, but it reminds the reader of the importance of moral autonomy in today's world, as well.

Editorial Review:

A modern classic with a new foreword by Stanley Milgram's former teacher and friend, author Jerome S. Bruner, Obedience to Authority emerges, even on the thirtieth anniversary of its publication, as a timely book for this age of war and terrorism.

Half a century ago, social scientist Stanley Milgram carried out a series of experiments. The "teacher" is told to administer electroshocks in progressively more painful degrees to the "learner." The teacher -- unaware that the learner is an actor receiving no shocks at all -- is the real focus of the study. These controversial and criticized experiments illustrate how people will obey authority regardless of consequences.

Judging Judgment and Decision Making 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

A decade ago Scott Plous produced a very readable summary of research in social psychology and (what is now known as) behavioral economics.
Our understanding of how people actually behave (as opposed to our theories as to how they should behave) has been immeasurably enriched by work dating (variously) from Herbert Simon, Daniel Kahneman, Amos Tversky, Stanley Milgram and many others.
Management education has yet to fully take into account the many insights coming from psychologists, experimental economists and others so nicely summarized in this book.

Editorial Review:

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING offers a comprehensive introduction to the field with a strong focus on the social aspects of decision making processes. Winner of the prestigious William James Book Award, THE PSYCHOLOGY OF JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING is an informative and engaging introduction to the field written in a style that is equally accessible to the introductory psychology student, the lay person, or the professional. A unique feature of this volume is the Reader Survey which readers are to complete before beginning the book. The questions in the Reader Survey are drawn from many of the studies discussed throughout the book, allowing readers to compare their answers with the responses given by people in the original studies. This title is part of The McGraw-Hill Series in Social Psychology.

The Modern Day Mountebank 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The other review that said the author thinks with a broad brush is apt, except for the thinking part.

He proceeds from unarticulated ideas to worthless theories based upon them. He takes as concrete starting points things such as 'commonsense reality' (undefined), and tries to posit a theory of 'spheres of reality', in which he equates things like mental images, the physical world, what is 'close by' and what is 'far away'.

This is the modern day version of the snake oil salesman. Or better yet, it is like reading a new age book on spriritualism, but in the clothing of intellectualism. This is Deepak Chopra masquerading as a sociologist. But I don't even think the author knows it himself.

An important work on how people come to know 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The book begins with the defining statement of its thesis (page 1): "The basic contentions of the argument of this book are implicit in its title, namely, that reality is socially constructed. . . ." The essence of this: our understanding of what is "real" is something that comes from our living in a social world. That social world is a major part of defining what "reality" is.

The book is not necessarily an easy read. But the authors' argument is important and the reader will be rewarded by "toughing it out." Even if one disagree with Berger and Luckmann, it is important to grapple with and address their arguments.

One of the major issues of the human condition is that we become convinced that we "know" reality" and reject other people's views of "reality"--when, in fact, as the authors argue, "reality is a construction of society." Much conflict, then, is a battle over constructions--and not a battle over objective reality.

Human nature's role? The book winds up with a telling comment here (page 183): "Man is biologically predestined to construct and to inhabit a world with others. This world becomes for him the dominant and definitive reality. Its limits are set by nature, but, once constructed, this world acts back upon nature. . . . In this same dialectic man produces reality and thereby produces himself."

This is an important work on how people come to understand the world around them and how that perception, in its turn, affects their behavior. Many readers will be uncomfortable with this argument, but it is an important issue to address. And this book is one of those key venues where such an interaction between readers and ideas can take place.

Editorial Review:

This book reformulates the sociological  subdiscipline known as the sociology of knowledge.  Knowledge is presented as more than ideology, including as  well false consciousness, propaganda, science and  art.
