Entertaining Well Written Rationalization 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is no doubt well written with some interesting anthropological details. It attempts to tie together disparate and highly varied human behavior. The gist one gets is that the author believes that societies do not act irrationally sometimes but that there is always some sort of practical explanation. Some of these explanations make sense such as taboos on the slaughter of cows or the eating of pork, but the more complex analysis of war as practical population control or Jesus being a "military messiah" seems speculative to me and the logic used does not always add up or remain consistant. It seems that the author easily rationalizes what he sees as a somewhat understandable survival motivated jusitification for tribal warfare. But what of such same analysis applied to modern war? For the people that get killed there is no justice. It is convienient to say that otherwise they would die a slow death from starvation. But who is to judge who lives and dies? The most intelliegent or the most ruthless or the most humane? Are the consequences always dire propositions but can never become self perpetuating traditions of violence for less savory oppressive motives or bloodlust? It's easy to conjecture about other cultures or time periods of long ago but these theories should be tested by applying them to one's own culture and seeing if the same conclusions are drawn.
In the minds of the "irrational" there is some sense of twisted explanation even for the craziest behavior but there is still a distinction to be made about what may be less than practical and self destructive.
Those that choose who is to live and who is to die don't volunteer.

Editorial Review:

This book challenges those who argue that we can change the world by changing the way people think. Harris shows that no matter how bizarre a people's behavior may seem, it always stems from concrete social and economic conditions.

Editorial Review:

The story of the most truly American holiday and the development of its symbols and legends.

Each of our holidays has its own familiar traditions: Trick-or-treating on Halloween, eating turkey on Thanksgiving, waiting for Santa Claus on Christmas, exchanging cards on Valentine's Day. But where do these customs come from, when did they begin, and why do we continue to observe them?

In the engaging blend of careful research and lively prose that has earned her books a lasting place on the holiday bookshelf, Edna Barth explores the multicultural origins and evolution of the familiar and not-so-familiar symbols and legends associated with our favorite holidays. Full of fascinating historical details and little-known stories, these books are both informative and engaging. Festively illustrated by Ursula Arndt, they are now available again in hardcover as well as paperback editions, featuring new, eye-catching jacket designs, and fun holiday activities inside the paperback covers. Each book includes an annotated list of holiday stories and poems and an index.

One Novelist's Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 19 people found this review helpful.

What a wonderful service Sophie Hodorowicz Knab has provided for the Polish community and for those who write about the Polish past! I didn't come across this book until my last few months of working on PUSH NOT THE RIVER, but it was a big help, nonetheless. I only wish it had been around years before when I started my novel. When you read about Marzanna, the Goddess of Death, you'll know who provided some invaluable information.

POLISH CUSTOMS, TRADITIONS, and FOLKLORE, like Miss Knab's other books, is accessible, authoritative, and intensely interesting!

Great Encyclopedia of Polish Tradition and Customs 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

According to my knowledge this is the most comprehensive book devoted to Polish customs available for English speaking readers. I recommend it especially for people with Polish ancestors or these who are interested in Polish traditions or anthropology. It may be also used as a reference book or the encyclopedia. But, the book is very interesting to read from cover to cover also. It contains an index and some pictures - I wish it had more!
Overall, Sophie Hodorowicz did a wonderful job - she arranged the majority of customs according to calendar - entangling the customs with the seasons of the year and the Christian feasts traditions.

Editorial Review:

In this definitive portrait of the political and social life of Georgetown, bestselling biographer C. David Heymann chronicles the dinner parties, correspondence, overlappings, and underpinnings of some of the most influential women in Washington's history.

"The Georgetown Ladies' Social Club" -- a term coined by Ronald Reagan -- comprises a list of formidable and fascinating women, among them Katharine Graham, Lorraine Cooper, Evangeline Bruce, Pamela Harriman, and Sally Quinn. Their husbands, government officials and newsmakers among them, relied on the ladies for their sharp wit and sensitivity, refined bearings, and congeniality. In a city characteristically and traditionally controlled by men, the Georgetown wives were, in turn, afforded an abundance of behind-the-scenes political clout.

Filled with intriguing and often startling insights into Washington life, from the latter days of the Kennedy and Truman administrations to the Clinton era and the advent of President George W. Bush, The Georgetown Ladies' Social Club is a compelling testament to the sex, lies, and red tape of American politics.

Best of its class 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

My volume is the original 1968 version, so my comments do not emcompass whatever changes have been introduced in the recent edition. Nonetheless, Fehrenbach's book is simply the best of the breed with respect to a single volume history of Texas and its people.

If you are politically correct, you will not like the historical accuracy of this book. The author clearly gives the Scotch-Irish (Anglo-Celts) their due for pushing the frontier westwards, settling Texas, and giving it its "Texas" tradition. One reviewer speaks of the absence of the Hispanic contribution, but it must be remembered that at the time of the Texas Revolution, Anglos outnumbered Mexicans ten to one in Texas. Indeed, the growth of Mexican population figures in Texas is a post World War II phenomenon, and the current ethnic composition is of recent vintage. The author is historically correct to limit his coverage of Mexicans in Texas to south of the Nueces, San Antonio, the Rio Grande valley and Ybarbo's group until after World War II. Had the Mexicans been able to defeat the Lipan Apaches and Comanches, the history would have been different.

Another reviewer pans the book due to the author's leaving out a reference to a diary's author and then proceeds to allege the meeting in question was fictional. Based on this single case, he relegates the entire book to fictional status. It seems to me that there must be something else at work here.

The author tells it like it was. Attitudes such as the Indians losing their land because they didn't develop it were normal in the time period involved, and the choice to fight for the Confederacy did revolve more around fighting with and for kin and neighbors rather than an abstract idea like states rights or anything else. In addition, Texas had only recently joined the Union, and the belief that it had the right to secede from the Union was widespread (and probably judicially correct except that the Civil War eliminated that viewpoint in law for the forseeable future.) And yes, Indians, blacks and Mexicans were looked down upon as inferior in general by the Scotch-Irish almost until the book was first written. But saying that this attitude was prevalent doesn't make the author racist or inaccurate in his depiction of the reality of the times. Observations on Indian culture and civilization may offend the politically correct individual in the twentieth century, but that does not make them less accurate. Those who wish to make a counter argument should do so in their own work, not simply rant against a position without supporting observations or facts.

One negative reviewer has a legitimate criticism in bemoaning the lack on emphasis on water availability. This was particularly important west of Sweetwater and San Antonio, but one should recognize that any single volume will have omissions due to space. That does not make a book not worth reading -- only that it does not cover some reviewer's pet points. The author has done the best possible job of covering Texas history in 719 pages and should be commended.

This book is a "must" for any American interested in American History even if one does not agree with certain depictions or feels significant events or discussions are missing.

Editorial Review:

Here is an up-to-the-moment history of the Lone Star State, together with an insider's look at the people, politics, and events that have shaped Texas from the beginning right up to our days. Never before has the story been told with more vitality and immediacy. Fehrenbach re-creates the Texas saga from prehistory to the Spanish and French invasions to the heyday of the cotton and cattle empires. He dramatically describes the emergence of Texas as a republic, the vote for secession before the Civil War, and the state's readmission to the Union after the War. In the twentieth century oil would emerge as an important economic resource and social change would come. But Texas would remain unmistakably Texas, because Texans "have been made different by the crucible of history; they think and act in different ways, according to the history that shaped their hearts and minds."

One Near Perfect Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Next to coal mining and waitressing, one of the more under valued jobs in our society is that of the intrepid, well-informed skeptic, whose role in life is to question that which the rest of us have accepted without full examination. In her new book "One Perfect Day," New Yorker writer Rebecca Mead dares to question our sense of proportion when it comes to how we marry and what it costs us. Her thin but effective book is less an expose, than a sharply written consumer digest of the people and the practices behind that "one perfect day," when bride and groom are encouraged to surrender their financial and emotional sobriety to a $161-billion a year industry. Ms. Mead has done her homework, and offers it up in entertaining bite-size portions that will supply the reader with plenty of cocktail party conversation. While one reviewer found the book "too cynical" for her taste, I believe the author wishes to be more of a consumer advocate than a romance deflator. When she briefly shares the details of her own wedding day, she does so like any bride who's happy to show you the photos. A good read from one of our most observant writers.

Editorial Review:

Astutely observed and deftly witty, One Perfect Day masterfully mixes investigative journalism and social commentary to explore the workings of the wedding industry—an industry that claims to be worth $160 billion to the U.S. economy and which has every interest in ensuring that the American wedding becomes ever more lavish and complex. Taking us inside the workings of the wedding industry—including the swelling ranks of professional event planners, department stores with their online registries, the retailers and manufacturers of bridal gowns, and the Walt Disney Company and its Fairy Tale Weddings program—New Yorker writer Rebecca Mead skillfully holds the mirror up to the bride’s deepest hopes and fears about her wedding day, revealing that for better or worse, the way we marry is who we are.

Editorial Review:

What in life is unconquerable; what survives? On The Faithful Gardener, Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes mines the rich storytelling tradition of her own family to unearth a series of lyrical stories that illustrate how faith is the one immortal force in our lives. Raised by a family of refugee immigrants who revered stories as healing instruments, Dr. Estes tells these ageless tales first told " ... to nourish, repair, and strengthen - whatever is most needed and wanted." Like Matriochka dolls, The Faithful Gardener stories nest inside one another. What begins as a simple tale from the lips of a child, becomes the greater saga of Uncle Zovar, a quiet refugee from the Nazi slave camps, and his refusal to let bitterness darken his devotion to the earth. The final story, told in the form of a vivid old country tale about "that which can never die," holds an unforgettable lesson about sacrifice and spiritual regeneration. The Faithful Gardener captures the spirit of a long-ago time, while deeply expressing our common desire to know that grappling with sudden and unexpected twists of fate and challenging transitions - however painful - is never in vain.

Before planning an event, there is much that must be done behind the scenes to make the event successful. This book takes you behind the scenes of event planning and explains every aspect of organizing and strategic planning. This book will be of value to both the professional event planner and to clients who are dealing with planners.

Its comprehensive coverage includes: how to prepare winning proposals, and how to understand them if you are the client; how to determine management fees; negotiating contracts; safety issues; designing events in multicultural settings; and new technology that makes operations more efficient (such as online registration and response management, database project management tools). The book also includes practical tools such as sample letters of agreement, sample layouts for client proposals, forms, and checklists. Professional event planner Judy Allen offers first-time or professional event planners all the top-class advice they need to make their special events come off without a hitch.
