Okay, depending on what you want 3 out of 5 stars.
26 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Most of this book was irrelevant for what I wanted. I was looking for a source for religiously-oriented vows, prayers, and blessings which I could use to create an ecumenical wedding service. This book DOES have a section of such things --and I did find it useful for comparison purposes-- but the main emphasis is on contemporary vows, addresses, etc., most of which seemed just too fluffy for me. If you do want very emotionally-laden, "unique to you" and non-traditional wedding, go for this. If you seriously want to compare weddings from different Judeo-Christian traditions, I highly recommend _Weddings: A Complete Guide to All Religious and Interfaith Marriage Services_ instead.

More than words can say ... Kingma is king of vows! 5 out of 5 stars.

I plan to elope and have never wanted to say the standard religious vows from my Roman Catholic childhood. Kingma is a master of words. Capturing love is not easy. Saying the most with the least is the magic. Bring illumination into your personal ceremony with Daphne's wisdom. Better yet, consider having her as your marriage officiant.

Editorial Review:

The author of True Love and Coming Apart offers a combination of contemporary and traditional ceremonies, poetry, and practical advice to help couples make their wedding day unique and understand the meaning behind the wedding ceremony. Original. IP.

Very good, yet simple Thanksgiving book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have a three year old, and this story is just right for her. It is simple enough that it keeps her attention, but it provides details such as why the Pilgrims left England, the harsh winters they had to endure, the different tribes of Native Americans they encountered and became indebted to, and it explains the harvest feast and why the pilgrims were thankful. I recommend this if you want something that gives a simple yet not overly simple explanation of the first Thanksgiving.

WHY WE GIVE THANKS 5 out of 5 stars.

I BOUGHT THIS NOT KNOWING IF MY 4 YEAR OLD AND 2 1/2 YEAR GRANDCHILDREN WOULD SIT THROUGH THE ENTIRE READING. THEY DID AND PAID ATTENTION TO WHAT WAS BEING READ!!! OBVIOUSLY THIS BOOK IS NOT INTENDED FOR CHILDREN THIS SMALL TO READ BY THEMSELVES BUT IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY TO READ TO THEM AND TEACH THEM THE TRUE MEANINGS OF OUR VARIOUS HOLIDAYS AND THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY - THIS STORY OFFERS BOTH. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT FOR THIS AGE GROUP AND OLDER. A HINT - I READ THE STORY ALONG WITH INVOLVING THEM WITH SOME EASY THANKSGIVING CRAFT PROJECTS TO HELP REINFORCE THE STORY LINE.

Editorial Review:

Learn about the Pilgrim's arrival in the new world, their harsh first winter, and their relationship with Samoset, Squanto, and other Native Americans. The book culminates in the great harvest feast shared between the English and the Natives, which has now come to be known as the first Thanksgiving.

Excellent Quick Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is like a "cliff notes" for the jewish home. It includes the appropriate prayers for hanging the mezuzah, shabbot etc... and it does a nice job of explaining the holidays and pointing out the difference b/w reform and conservative jewish observance. I have read this book over and over again and will use it for years to come. I plan to read the stories to my children before each holiday.

Editorial Review:

The Jewish Home explains many of the "whys" of major Jewish holidays and life-cycle events. The birth of a child, the weeding ceremony, b’nei mitzvah, and Shabbat are only a few of the topics discussed in this work. Readers are provided with Jewish rituals and practices, their symbolism, and their historical and cultural roots.

Rabbi Daniel Syme has revised this edition to reflect the changes in Reform Judaism and Jewish life that have occurred since its first publication 15 years ago. He presents clear explanations of traditional and contemporary practices in an easy-to-follow question-and-answer format.

Interesting collection. 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Food and culture are examined in 28 essays by noted anthropologists and other social scientists in this uneven but valuable survey.
Reading some of the academese is like treading molasses, but the collection is redeemed by such gems as Brumberg's examination of the Victorian roots of anorexia nervosa, Sobo's study of the social meanings of obesity in Jamaica, and Harris' "The Abominable Pig". Other writers explore such issues as breast-feeding, "industrial food", and hunger.
Very interesting and worthwhile for those interested in the deeper meanings of food and eating.

MIRIAMS KITCHEN;A MEMOIR 5 out of 5 stars.

Well done, most interesting, all the various recipes, combined with memories from a time long ago. Have enjoyed it immensely.

Thoughtful, interesting memoir 4 out of 5 stars.

Miriam's kitchen is a thoughtful, interesting, warm and homey memoir. If you are interested in material culture -- particularly food -- of various groups, you'll find it interesting. It's also a story about balancing identities -- Jewish, American, feminist, traditionalist, etc.

Food for the Spirit 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Elizabeth Ehrlich is a Jewish American woman who rejected, for many years, her connection to the practices of her Jewish faith. It is only through her discovery of her mother-in-law Miriam's kitchen and the foods prepared there that she learns to value the traditions that shaped her own family, traditions brought from the Old World and translated into the New. Through entries in her journal, through letters, memories, stories, and above all, through Miriam's recipes, Ehrlich recreates for us the story of her spiritual awakening and her self-guided journey into the lives of her foremothers, who nourished their faith and kept it alive and growing in difficult times, difficult places, through pain, separation, and even despair.

This often funny, often heart-rending, always beautifully-evocative book is a powerful testimony to the importance of women's domestic contributions to the survival of their families, their communities, and their faith.

This book will change your head! 5 out of 5 stars.
42 of 42 people found this review helpful.

Violence and religion have gone hand in hand as far back as we have records, from Dionysian revels and ancient human sacrifice to contemporary fundamentalisms that would destroy entire nations or races to preserve some particular version of Truth. In "Violence and the Sacred," Rene Girard attempts nothing less than to expose the entire history of this alliance.

It is impossible to give an adequate summary of this comprehensive and closely reasoned book. But briefly, Girard argues that - pre-historically - it was precisely acts of communal violence and the resulting shock and collective repression that resulted from these acts that generated our very sense of the sacred. And our continuing violence, in all its forms, is a history of attempts to re-experience transcendence.

(A word of caution: Early on, those with religious convictions may be tempted to conclude that Girard is reducing religion to a form of collective guilt. **He is not.** Girard is a Christian, and has progressed from literary criticism to critical theory to active efforts to promote methods of constructive, peaceful conflict resolution.)

In fleshing out this theory, Girard leans heavily on his insights into the mimetic and violent nature of desire (see his earlier "Deceit, Desire, and the Novel"), and he links mimetic desire, our tendency to marginalize and scapegoat those who are "different," our tendency toward violence, and our experience of ultimate otherness (the sacred). One of the most impressive aspects of this book is that it constitutes, simultaneously, a response not only to the questions of the origins of violence and religion, but to the key 19th century theorists Marx , Freud (the primal horde scenario, and repression), and Nietzsche, **and** to their late-20th century heirs - Foucault, Lacan, and Derrida (differance).

In the end, however, it was not simply Girard's argument that convinced me, impeccable as it seems. Rather, after working through this book, I began to see the mechanisms of mimetic violence in operation all around me - and within me, as well: consumerism driven by manufactured "needs," road rage, sibling rivalry, not to mention shamefully misdirected nationalism.

In my opinion, this is a very important book. By exposing the mimetic nature of violence and its subtle, often hidden workings, Girard - like a good therapist - gives us a tool to identify and begin to change deeply entrenched patterns of response, in ourselves and the world. But this is not a self-help book. It's a mature work of social and critical theory, and is definitely not light reading. If you take on "Violence and the Sacred," stick with it. It will change the way you see the world!

Editorial Review:

"His fascinating and ambitious book provides a fully developed theory of violence as the `heart and secret soul' of the sacred. Girard's fertile, combative mind links myth to prophetic writing, primitive religions to classical tragedy."--Victor Brombert, 'Chronicle of Higher Education.'
