Great Reference Tool 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

From being friends, family members, and associates of several Greeks, there is much information in this book that I was already familiar with, but I still wanted to read it as a reference guide for my own publication. And indeed, I'm so very glad that I did. This book took an intelligent perspective on the pros and cons of being Greek. The author discussed the history of stepping, a few interviews with nonBlacks who crossed, the heinous history of hazing, the complexity of the Board and advisers versus undergraduates in volunteer work and pledging, and a well-thought out idea on how hazing can stop, but the pledging process will still weed out the slackers and attention seekers. The author spoke about the history, reputation, symbols, hand signals, and style of the Divine Nine (even when there were originally eight). This book is indeed a great source to learn about the history of Black Greeks, and I applaud him for his hard work.

Editorial Review:

"Black Greek 101 provides an analysis of the customs, culture, and challenges facing historically Black fraternal organizations. The text initially provides a history of Black Greek organizations beyond the nine major organizations. Next, the pledging practice of the organizations is chronicled, noting the abuses associated with it, and a recent research study assesses the policies implemented to curb hazing in the organizations. The text highlights the growth of fraternalism outside of the mainstream organizations, with particular emphasis on African fraternal organizations. Then, the vivid culture and practices of the groups is documented, providing a historical grounding of the visible aspects of the groups. Finally, several challenges for the future are highlighted. Readers are also provided with an annotated bibliography of articles, news stories, and books related to Black fraternalism, as well as a chronicle of hazing cases over the past twelve years. An insider's true advice 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As an administrator in a ESL school, where 10% of our students come from Japan, and at least 10% of our ESL teachers trainees plan on going to Japan to teach English, Culture Shock Japan was an wonderful discovery for me! P. Sean Bramble unveiled the cultural mystery step by step from every aspect of life. It's a great reference book for anyone, no matter whether you are planning a trip to Japan, moving to Japan for a long period of time, your work involves dealing with Japanese culture like mine, or you are simply curious about this modern and ancient eastern country. One of my favorite things about the book are the hilarious little stories that Bramble collected from his own 12 years of experience living and working in Japan, which gave me many giggles through out the reading.

Those stories are particularly funny to me, because they often echo my own experience of of culture shock when I first immigrated to the United States from China 7 years ago. Although, I am completely annoyed when people get confused between Japan and China, there are after all lots of similarities when it comes to clashes between Asian and western cultures.

I also admire the fact that the author was willing to take the risk of being accused as negative or judgmental to honestly point out the frustrating reality of living and dealing with a new culture in a tongue in cheek manner. Unlike promotional travel books, which only portray the wonders of a destination, this book gives unvarnished insight into a country where modernity meets ancient traditions, efficiency is created by rules but also destroyed by rules. It gives insider's advices on how a new comer can be prepared to begin understanding, embracing, and even having a bit of fun with the culture he is about to clash into. As I closed the book, I felt as if I had just finished a tour lead by an experienced open heart with a true sense of humor. I am now much more ready for a real trip to Japan.

Editorial Review:

With over three million copies in print, CultureShock! is a bestselling series of culture and etiquette guides covering countless destinations around the world. For anyone at risk of culture shock, whether a tourist or a long-term resident, CultureShock! provides a sympathetic and fun-filled crash course on the do's and don'ts in foreign cultures. Fully updated and sporting a fresh new look, the revised editions of these books enlighten and inform through such topics as language, food and entertaining, social customs, festivals, relationships, and business tips. CultureShock! books are packed with useful details on transportation, taxes, finances, accommodation, health, food and drink, clothes, shopping, festivals, and much, much more.

Finding serious comfort food 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Jane and Michael Stern are a married couple renowned for their love of what they call "roadfood." In other words, the kind of uniquely American food you find in small cafes off a main highway - serious comfort food. They've been traveling the country for decades writing about their finds in a series of food travel books and cookbooks as well as a regular column in "Gourmet" magazine. I have a number of their books and always enjoy them. "Two for the Road" details a bit more about their adventures - the behind-the-scenes of how they find this amazing food all over the country.

Most of the stories are humorous in nature, and their light writing style is welcome here. They tell tales of language misunderstandings (thinking that the waitress in a small southern cafe was offering then "bald corn" when in fact it has been "boiled") and food culture clashes (ordering vinegar steamed tripe and finding the stink overwhelming). The couple has a series of running gags - the challenge of eating 12 meals a day, having to replace their car every few chapters, their love of menus, and so forth.

"Two for the Road" goes down very easily; it's kind of like a James Herriot novel for food lovers instead of animal lovers. Your mouth will likely be watering throughout, helped along by the inclusion of two to three recipes at the end of each chapter. The Stern's also helpfully include addresses of most restaurants they discuss (one glaring oversight is the Bunton Cafe in Nashville). Some of the text is "borrowed" from their other books; for example, several entries from their classic "Roadfood" book find their way into this book as well. However, overall, "Two for the Road" is a very enjoyable, fun read that will likely be well received by food lovers of all kind.

Editorial Review:

Part memoir, part guidebook, part cookbook, and all parts hilarious,
Two for the Road shares the lessons the Sterns have learned during
thirty years of sampling regional fare on America's back roads. If you want
a great restaurant, forget the Yellow Pages, ask the local cop—and avoid
anything that calls itself "world famous." Sure bets are places with a giant
plastic pig on the roof or pictures of Jesus on the walls. As the Sterns
search for the Holy Grail of barbecue, they relate achingly funny adventures
and misadventures, and what emerges is a big picture of America,
revealing exotic eating customs that flourish right under our noses.

Editorial Review:

While there may be similarities among many Latin American countries, it is important for business travellers to understand the subtle differences and nuances among them. Understanding of the culture and customs behind the economic growth in Latin America, including the role that religion and the Church play in government and everyday life is essential. Eye Candy for the Collector 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

So far this is the best book I've found on Vintage Halloween in the sense of information, layout and the broad spectrum of items covered. It is evident that Mark Ledenbach is truly passionate about his collection. The photos are high quality and well laid out. The information is thought provoking and facsinating to any Halloween enthusiast. I do wish there were more item information regarding usage or other interesting tidbits, however this book does give the reader what it promises.
A must have for the Halloween aficionado.

Editorial Review:

The tradition of trick-or-treating can be traced back to the early 1900s, but the decorations of all things scary began much before that. Some time around the late 1800s pumpkins, witches, black cats, and ghouls began appearing in parades, adorning city streets, and decorating homes. Mark Ledenbach shares his collection of vintage Halloween collectibles for the first time in this new identification and price guide. Nearly 1,250 vintage collectibles are vividly displayed in full-color, with the majority of them having never before been published in previous works profiling Halloween memorabilia. Each masterfully photographed item includes manufacturing country, company, and dates; specific measurements to the nearest 1/4 inch; and reproduction alerts, item iterations, and more.

How much objectivity could you keep while studying a people? 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

First off, this is not a book about the Moroccan people. It is a book about the ethnographer's experience with a community of Moroccan people. I assume that, somewhere out there, is a university press publication of his actual findings gathering dust on a shelf. Instead, this book is about some of the more uncomfortable aspects of anthropology and the destroying of illusions.

Questions of finding the outsider's insider (someone enough on the fringes to be willing to take you under their wing, but not so much that they don't have a good in-road into their own culture), of the purity of research (did you have to pay these people before they'd bother to talk to you? Were they expecting payment based on relations with other enthnographers?), and how much one can really understand a culture just by sitting a watching it (as opposed to participating, which threatens objectivity) are the issues Rabinow faced, and what he wrote about.

"Reflections on Fieldwork in Morocco" is just that, memoirs on the process of the research itself, not Rabinow's findings. There are interesting comments on Rabinow's interactions with his insiders, but rarely the sort that could go into a standard academic tome. This answer to the delima of objectivity, splitting one's experiences into an official report and a journal of sorts, is one I'd like to see more of.

Editorial Review:

In this landmark study, now celebrating thirty years in print, Paul Rabinow takes as his focus the fieldwork that anthropologists do. How valid is the process? To what extent do the cultural data become artifacts of the interaction between anthropologist and informants? Having first published a more standard ethnographic study about Morocco, Rabinow here describes a series of encounters with his informants in that study, from a French innkeeper clinging to the vestiges of a colonial past, to the rural descendants of a seventeenth-century saint. In a new preface Rabinow considers the thirty-year life of this remarkable book and his own distinguished career.

Plenty of cultural insights and background history 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

There's a strong relationship between biological need and culture: a relationship emphasized by E.N. Anderson, professor of anthropology at University of California Riverside, in his survey Everyone Eats: Understanding Food And Culture. Discussions range from the aesthetics of eating and different sensory perceptions between cultures to the needs for foods as displayed in differing literature of cultures, and surveys of how food fads change over time. Plenty of cultural insights and background history lend to a survey particularly recommended for college-level students of anthropology and social science.

Editorial Review:

Everyone eats, but rarely do we ask why or investigate why we eat what we eat. Why do we love spices, sweets, coffee? How did rice become such a staple food throughout so much of eastern Asia? Everyone Eats examines the social and cultural reasons for our food choices and provides an explanation of the nutritional reasons for why humans eat, resulting in a unique cultural and biological approach to the topic. E. N. Anderson explains the economics of food in the globalization era, food's relationship to religion, medicine, and ethnicity as well as offers suggestions on how to end hunger, starvation, and malnutrition.

Everyone Eats feeds our need to understand human ecology by explaining the ways that cultures and political systems structure the edible environment.

Gets 10 Stars from Me 5 out of 5 stars.
37 of 37 people found this review helpful.

This is the update version of her original Caring For Your Own Dead and what I said about that book applies here. Lost count of the number of copies of this book I have bought, but I love giving it as a gift, and have used it myself actually when helping friends build plain pine burial boxes and oak burial boxes for loved ones.

It is a subject that needs to be discussed more, since so many people assume that ONLY a funeral home that charges thru the nose in prices, can legally handle a body or a funeral and burial. Fact is nothing could be further from the truth. The book discusses each states laws, along with what family and loved ones need to know about getting tansport permits to get the body of a loved one either home from the hospital, and prepared for a service and burial or to a local cemetary or cremation facility for handling. And the new edition has updated info on state to state laws.

Fact is my Grandma Katy who grew up in rural Montana knew all about washing and dressing family members and the whole life to death process and that death and burial need NOT be a scary and uneasy thing to take part in. The author discusses all the myths of handling the dead, and all the misconceptions people have about death and dying. Personally I cannot think of a more loving gift than welcoming a new life into the world and helping a loved on who has exited this world.

This book and the classic The American Way Of Death by Jessica Mitford are MUST reads for anyone who is mature, thoughtful and not so easy swayed to handing all their personal needs over to strangers. Ceasar Chavez' family made his plain pine burial boxes. The Amish make all their own burial boxes and have for centuries. Locally we made our friends Bea Brickeys plain pine box per her wishes.

Bill Cosbys family buried their beloved son who had been murdered, at their home. And the Amish, some Quakers and a number of Sierra Club members I know have all done the "home funeral", so the idea that you the average citizen cannot do what the Amish and the wealthy do for their own loved ones, is just not true. Read the book if for no other reason that to learn something new.

Editorial Review:

This is a complete guide for those making funeral arrangements with or without a funeral director. Families, friends, and support groups who want to say goodbye in a meaningful way - not just write a big check to a funeral director - will find detailed and practical legal information in this unique guide. By taking an active role in funeral and memorial arrangements, families can save thousands of dollars while better serving the emotional needs of loved ones. "Caring for The Dead" gives the legal requirements of each state, how to obtain and file permits and death certificates, explanations of cremation and embalming, burial procedures, and other necessary information. Readers learn how to shop for the best services at the most reasonable prices, while avoiding fraudulent and deceptive mortuary practices. This landmark book helps readers take control of one of life's most intimate experiences - the final act of love for a friend or relative.

I learned so much 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a very well written book that truly explains the origins of Hawaiian tattoos and tattooing and brings the practice into the modern time and context.
I would have given it a rating of 5 but felt that it could be greatly enhanced with a glossary of Hawaiian language and tattooing terms.
I learned so very much and I am grateful to Tricia Allen for publishing her research and getting interviews with wearers of Hawaiian tattoos and the tattooists.

Editorial Review:

Anthropologist and tattooist Tricia Allen has harnessed centuries of knowledge about Hawaiian tattoos and has created this fascinating, comprehensive reference book that can be enjoyed by both tattoo enthusiasts and cultural scholars. Tattoo Traditions of Hawaii describes the evolution of Hawaiian tattooing as an art and science tracing it from its early roots in ancient Polynesia; presents motif, meaning, placement, tools and techniques along with personal observations and commentary in meticulous and graphic detail; discusses contemporary Hawaiian tattooing within the context of contact with the Western world; and includes drawings of designs and patterns for ideas and consideration.
