A Keepsake Treasure 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This popular version of the tale of highwayman Robin Hood is artfully written, and can be easily appreciated by adults as well as youngsters. The text is colorfully rendered, and the story is as fresh as when the first odes celebrating this infamous character were penned. Of the many versions I have read, Roger Lancelyn Green's remains my favorite. Apparently, many others must think so; this edition has been in print since 1956. However, the absolute icing on the cake in owning this edition are the exqusite illustrations by noted illustrator Walter Crane. The endpapers featuring silhouettes by E.H. Shepard are also charming. Whether you buy this book for the wonderful text, the fine illustrations, or the fact that it retains its antique look, you will not be disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Champion of the poor and oppressed, Robin Hood takes refuge with his Merrie Men in the vast Sherwood Forest, emerging time and again to outwit his enemies with daring and panache. Green's version of the classic tale brings sense, clarity and excitement to the myths, ballads and legends of Robin's adventures.

Witchcraft ? This is Wicca 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The Tides( or seasons) are called Sabbats in this book? and this is a Witchcraft book not Wiccan? Sabbat is a Wiccan word. Why is this lost on people?? This is a Wiccan book. Nothing wrong with that!!.I like Wicca But please dont call it something else when you use words like Mabon and Sabbat yes I understand what they are ,what they mean and on and on.People feel ripped off when they buy the book(I did).I know this will be lost on most people and will also make them upset.
This is a great book for those of you that like to say you are not Wiccan but a Witch, even if your practice is just about all Wiccan.
Wicca is a influence for most of us that today practice anything that is called Modern Witchcraft.
Still I have found that most books(and people) that have Witch in the title are no different than the Wiccan Witchcraft books, while claiming not to to be.
This is not a bad book, but you can find the same stuff in other books that are better.
Also you can not just throw the word Witch to any culture you want.
I know it is popular.
That is much like calling the Runes (or Wicca for that matter) Celtic.People do it, but it will not make it true.
You would do better to read some books on Herbs and or Natural Magic that do not have the word Witch or Wicca in the title after you have read this

This is a good, basic collection of stories; you'll be surprised how entertaining they can be! Enjoy.

For an adult reader not for children 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

While this collection is great. I would recommend it for a young adult or adult reader - 15 years and up. It is not for younger children. There are little to no pictures, (a few line drawings) the text size is smaller and the language is not for young readers.

Fantastic resource 5 out of 5 stars.

I've had this book since I bought it at 13 and I absolutely love it. Since then, I have read this anthology several times over and know most of the stories by heart. While these stories are geared towards more of an adult audience, there are are also many stories in the book that are suitable for children. Buy this book and let it spark your imagination. Many countries are represented.

Wonderful Collection 5 out of 5 stars.

Another outstanding book in the Annotated Classics Series! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautiful book on the magical, scary, enchanting and
wonderful world of the fairy tale! Marie Tatar a Harvard German professor has done a superb job in putting this book together!
The stories range from the classics of the borthers Grimm, Perrault and Hans Christen Anderson. Fairy tales from several cultures are included from Great Britain, Germany, France, Russia
and Denmark.
The volume is beautifully illustrated with the illustrations from such giants as Cruikshank, Rackham, Parrish and several others.
This work is a beautiful way to share story time with one's
children or grandchildren. If you are going to buy one book of fairy tales appealing to both children and adults then this is the lavish lifetime volume for you!
Excellent!

Editorial Review:

This beautiful volume celebrates the best-loved stories of childhood through the vision of Maria Tatar, a leading expert in the field of folklore and children's literature. Challenging the notion that fairy tales can be read for their morals and used to make model citizens of little children, Tatar guides readers through the stories, exploring their historical origins, their cultural complexities and their psychological effects. Maria Tatar shows that by providing children with powerful models for navigating reality, these tales help children survive in a world ruled by adults. Twenty-six classic stories are presented - including "Beauty and the Beast", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Jack and the Beanstalk" and "The Little Mermaid". Maria Tatar has also assembled over 300 mostly four-colour photographs, paintings and illustrations, some very rare, creating a volume that will rank as one of the finest fairy tale collections in many decades.

This book is a huge hit. My 4 year old loves me to read it to her. I have entertained guests at our house by reading it too. So much fun!

So fun to read! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love reading this book to my 6 year-old boys, and they love to hear it. The rhythm of the writing, and the very clever story, makes this book a real joy, and very funny. Look for their other books, too.

Funniest Book Ever!!!!!!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my absolut favorite story ever written!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My 2 1/2 year old loves just as much as I do!I bought extra copies and sent it to every child in my family! It's become an instant classic.
It's especially fun if you read it with a creole accent which isn't that hard to do since they put a glossary in the front of the book on how to pronounce many of the words. Funny! Funny! Funny!

Editorial Review:

Big Bad Gator Claude will do anything to have a taste of Petite Rouge . . . even if it means putting on a duck bill, flippers, and frilly underwear. He presents no match for the spunky heroine and her quick-thinking cat TeJean, though, as they use some strong Cajun hot sauce to teach Claude a lesson he will never forget!

The combination of hilarious rhyme and exaggerated art creates a highly original retelling of the classic fairy tale. A pronunciation guide/glossary accompanies a tempting dialect that begs to be read aloud or acted out again and again. This is Little Red Riding Hood as she's never been seen before: Cajun and ducky.

Offkilter 3 out of 5 stars.

A lot of interesting theses and odd connections, but the horrid presentation and possibly untrustworthy sources lessen the value of this book.

Editorial Review:

Ever since the Greeks coined the language we commonly use for scientific description, mythology and science have developed separately. But what came before the Greeks? What if we could prove that all myths have one common origin in a celestial cosmology? What if the gods, the places they lived, and what they did are but ciphers for celestial activity, a language for the perpetuation of complex astronomical data? Drawing on scientific data, historical and literary sources, the authors argue that our myths are the remains of a preliterate astronomy, an exacting science whose power and accuracy were suppressed and then forgotten by an emergent Greco-Roman world view. This fascinating book throws into doubt the self-congratulatory assumptions of Western science about the unfolding development and transmission of knowledge. This is a truly seminal and original thesis, a book that should be read by anyone interested in science, myth, and the interactions between the two.

Gave me the creeps..in a good way! 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I was riveted to this book from the first page. Very visually appealing and written in a light-hearted way, it is a great guide for "ghost-chasers" and those who just love to see weird places. I also love how the authors never judge someone based on their personal testimony about places and events in the book and believe me, there are some wacked-out stories that you think just can't be true! I have only owned the book for a week and already have visited about 1/2 dozen of the places mentioned. I have even planned future weekend trips around some of the creepier areas in the book. Great fun! It is hard to tell where some of the things mentioned are at...specific directions are few and far between and that would be my only problem with the book. You won't be sorry you bought this book...it has something for everyone.

There are weird things about Ohio, believe it or not 4 out of 5 stars.

Despite having hack writer and former Decaturian Troy Taylor at the helm, Weird Illinois--a companion to this volume--makes for great bathroom reading. The production values and colorful images more than compensate for Taylor's leaden prose and inane editorializing. I love this book so much that every time I visit my best friend's Chicago apartment, I make time to secrete myself away in the john and hunch over it. I got to wondering what I would think of the book if the writing were as good as the production, and so I decided to check out another book in the series and see.

Luckily, I picked an absolute winner with *Haunted Ohio.* The writing is great, and not just because I'm comparing it with Taylor's ham-fisted oeuvre. The three co-authors balance a love of a good scare story with a desire to know the available facts about any site they describe; it constantly amazed me how they could debunk a particular legend with one or two salient, documented facts without ever abandoning the joy of repeating the original legend."Who cares if it isn't exactly true?" they seem to suggest, "If you're reading a book of weird stories, you're probably into it more for the chill it send down your spine than for any empirically verifiable facts it may reveal." As mentioned before in the context of *Haunted Illinois,* the production values are superb, and the addition of stories supplied by readers and locals really capture something uniquely Midwestern about these weird people and places.

The sections of the book deal with various weird topics like local legends, ancient mysteries (e.g., the Serpent Mound), fabled people and places, unexplained phenomena (e.g., UFO sightings, Hangar 18, and the ever-popular pancakes from space!), bizarre beasts (including the Mothman), local heroes and villains, personalized properties, roadside distractions (like the Longaberger Basket HQ featured on the cover---it's the building shaped like the giant basket, complete with handles), haunted places, cemeteries, and abandoned buildings and roller coasters.

A very fun, entertaining, and even (gasp) informative book.

Bad writing, silly stories 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A friend lent me this book. I was looking for interesting places to visit in PA. This is not a useful book for that.

The stories are not researched. Similar stories can be found in any mediocre book of ghost or weird stories. Nothing about the book is "Pennsylvania." How many books have stories about spontaneous combustion? What makes this a PA story? Stories about large fish? How is that PA?

There is a story about a cemetery on Blue Myst road related by Anonymous. There is no other information about the location of the cemetery. There is nothing PA about this story. Sure, it's local lore, but local to whom?

I'd enumerate some of the writing faux pas, but you don't care. The problem with too many books is that people read them and don't like them but don't know why. It's because of the bad writing. This book is afflicted by bad writing.

I am glad I got a chance to look at this book before investing any money.

Editorial Review:

In 1966, an English teacher and students in Northeast Georgia founded a quarterly magazine, not only as a vehicle to learn the required English curriculum, but also to teach others about the customs, crafts, traditions, and lifestyle of their Appalachian culture. Named Foxfire after a local phosphorescent lichen, the magazine became one of the most beloved publications in American culture.

For four decades, Foxfire has brought the philosophy of simple living to readers, teaching creative self-sufficiency, home crafts, and the art of natural remedies, and preserving the stories of Appalachia. This anniversary edition brings us generations of voices and lessons about the three essential Appalachian values of faith, family, and the land. We listen to elders share their own memories of how things used to be, and to the new generations eager to preserve traditional values in a more complicated world. There are descriptions of old church services, of popular Appalachian games and pastimes, and of family recipes. Rich with memories and useful lessons, this is a fitting tribute to this inspiring and practical publication that has become a classic American institution.

Editorial Review:

They are known as the Little People, the Beautiful Maidens, the Godmothers, the Blessed, the Ageless Ones...for it is dangerous to say the name "faeries" without good reason. Ruling over earth, air, fire, and water, they protect forests, animals, and children, and in their hands lie the dreamy souls of all creatures.

The faeries rose from the mist long, long ago, in the time of the Golden Age -- well before the creation of gods and men. In their magical fancy they created the singing grasses and the reflection of springs, the music of legends and the far side of the mirror. From the Valkyries of Valhalla to the Babouchka of Russia, Banshees, Dryads, Bogey Beasts, Sirens, and their ilk populate the imaginations and the forests of every culture.

In this comprehensive celebration of the world of faery, renowned French elficologist Pierre Dubois describes the extraordinary richness of the faery kingdom, presenting dozens and dozens of lushly illustrated entries on the most powerful and enchanting denizens of this magical world. Dubois provides readers with authoritative information detailing the customs, habitat, and activities of these Little People. Faery Godmothers, we discover, were originally tall, distinguished, and rather severe; only recently have they taken up the magic wands and cheerful smiles we know them for today. We learn that the favorite foods of the Arthurian faery Viviane are the blackberries that surround Merlin's tomb. And among the customs and activities of the Bogey Beast, the prime goal is indeed to scare little children...if only for their protection.

Dubois's entrancing descriptions are accompanied by Roland and Claudine Sabatier's marvelous illustrations, which depict the appearance of the faeries, the places where they are found, and their familiar objects. Without revealing any faery confidences (which must never be betrayed), Dubois and the Sabatiers have created a comprehensive and utterly enchanting survey of a magical world as old as time.
