A Must Read for All Men & Women Who Want to Understand Sexuality Better 4 out of 5 stars.

I must be honest in that I have never read a sexual self help book before - however, my boyfriend, after enduring a terrible 15 year marriage was suggested by a therapist to read it. I picked it up and couldn't put it down! Both men and women hold some misconceptions about what is right, acceptable, etc. and Bernie Busts the Myths! It also frees men from the social conditioning and/or poor parental guidance they received in their youth...but carried with them for years! I'm giving a copy to my 20 something son because I want him and his partner to enjoy their lives - every aspect of it! Even in this day and age people are still scared to talk frankly about sex...while there were a few concepts or opinions I didn't 100% agree with, overall it was very concise, accurate and quite witty...a fun read. I noticed most of the reviews were out of date so I wanted to provide a current one...buy this book if you are frustrated or confused (err...not doing well in) about relationships, especially the sexual components...Bernie will help you see clearer and enjoy your God given sexual self!

This book reads like a bad psych textbook from the 60's & 70's; because thats basically what it is. There are some masculine universal truths but you really have to search for them. The case studies & occupations are dated & irrelivent to baby boomers in the 21st century and not very helpful IMHO. Still there are a few pearls and saving graces but you really have to work hard to read this one.

A nice try at defining life stages but this book misses the mark. It's too culture-bound to be of much use to anyone other than white middle-class American baby boomers. If you are one of those - as I am - you may recognise yourself in this book up to a point, but I doubt you will learn much that's new. As other reviewers have pointed out, it would have been a groundbreaking book in the 1970's, but these days you'll find similar information and analysis in the lifestyle pages of most Sunday papers.

A Classic Guide to Understanding Men 5 out of 5 stars.

"Like most women I've done all the wrong things to try to get a man to love me, and I`ve had to learn the hard way." ~ Barbara DeAngelis

Barbara DeAngelis did men a favor when she wrote this book almost twenty years ago. This is an excellent pep talk for women who are fed up in their relationships. It gives women the power to change their relationships for the better all while allowing men to be men. This is not a book about changing men but rather a book that seeks to explain why men react the way they do. By making slight adjustments women can gain the love they need and deserve.

Reading this book made me appreciate my husband more. I especially liked her advice on being straightforward with men. She suggests that when you are feeling upset you tell your man exactly what you want from him at that time. This saves hours of wasted time and gets you a faster result, especially if you want to avoid fights. Barbara DeAngelis encourages women not to think of men as mind readers.

For the most part this book seems to be quite accurate so the only problem I had was that some of the solutions didn't take temperaments into consideration. A more outgoing partner may find it easier to plan events or take charge in various ways. This book does tell some secrets about men but it also explains how women act and react in relationships. I thought the section on sexuality was enlightening and men will love the advice when it is put into action.

A fascinating vision for the newest of new men 5 out of 5 stars.

Now the truth is that I am no newcomer to philosophy, not am I a newcomer to the idea that man must learn to create himself in order to come to terms with his own concept of manhood. This is an essential vision from a very wise writer. A man owes it to himself to make this exploration if you do not want to end up an unhappy life-trudger. I came originally into this exploration from zen, from Nietzsche and from the seduction community. This is for a man willing to explore the truth... to explore his own truths and is willing to embrace his own fears to get to something new. Just read it.

If I had to describe Sam Keen in one word, it would be "authentic." I would describe myself as an androgenous woman. (A more precise word would be "tomboy," I suppose.) A male friend dragged me to see Sam Keen speak some years ago. ("But, dearest, if he's going to speak to men, why must I come along? Can't you simply go have a listen, then call me later and tell me all about it?") Once Keen began speaking, I was riveted. He was not loud, nor charismatic (in the dynamic, hands flailing image). He was simply honest, sincere and insightful. He sat on a stool, relaxed, and spoke from his heart about what he's learned as a man. We are blessed in that Keen is also a good, solid writer. I have purchased this book again and again over the years for male friends, and will continue to do so, as each one of them has told me later how meaningful the book was to him.

This an Dr. Kunjufu's many other books are exceptional in the fact that he details the facts straight to the point. I enjoy his methods of writing without pullng any punches. I wish that I had read this before my son started grade school, but now he is in the 4th grade and he went from being placed in special education, to a 4.0 dean's list GPA. God bless the power of prayer and guidance. Anyone can change their situation. I also just finsihed my Associate in Business, and I am in my Bachelor's Degree program right now for Marketing. Of course I will go on to the Masters programs and Doctorates. Learn for life...

Reading this book revealed unfortunate truths that were not surprising to me at all. Serving as a public educator for over twelve years, it's sad but true as to why young black males at a very young age lose the desire, hope,and will to do better in school settings due to the facts listed in this book and many more since this book was written. I was overjoyed to see that Marcus Garvey Academy, a school that I taught at for eight years under the sincere leadership of Dr. Harvey Hambrick was mentioned. I was honored to read that Dr. Kunjufu took notice to how Marcus Garvey Academy in Detroit, Michigan and other schools assume pivotal roles in contributing to the solution to this horrible epidemic impededed on the futures and lives of young African American Males. Dr Jawanza Kunjufu did a great job at presenting multiple truths and the sad reality of how young black males are unfortunately targeted from the start.

I bought this book based on the other reviewers comments and read through the whole book. I usually have an open mind, but this was a tough read for me. Of all of the fantasies in the book, I only aligned with at most one of them -- or a few brief parts of 2 or 3.

The author seems to be fixated on the relationship between sons and monthers; with the father being the competition for the mother's attention (in the son's view). Anyway, that's the author's explanation for most of the chapters.

I'm not going to debate the author's point, which on the surface would seem to imply that a single-monther household with only one son would be "ideal", but both the author and I agree that this would not be "ideal".

Anyway, enough of that and on to the book. The author has gathered up numerous letters from men that were submitted. The submittal process was fairly random: if readers saw a request at the end of her previous book for women, or in brief blurbs in a couple of print advertisements. So it seems that the people who would see these requests for input are a small subset of the population, and of those only a small fraction would actually write a letter. So if you take this book as a conpendum of fantasies from a fringe of society, then you'll start reading the book with the correct mindset.

I'm a little unsure as to how to comment on this book, but I felt compelled to do so because the other reviewers left out something that I would appreciate knowing. So here's a summary of the book:

1. sons love their mothers, and feel "separated" from them.
2. fathers compete for mothers' affections (i.e. son goes to his room at night and father goes in with mother).
3. the chapters are grouped "sort of" by subject area. But there is no clear reason to the ordering of the chapters.
4. there appears to be little editing of the letters composing the chapters. The author even says that she was hesitant to edit the letters.
5. the format of each chapter is usualy a couple of letters, then some commentary, then a couple more letters.
6. the author attempts to portray the letters as a broad swath of society, however from the letters it appears that many of the men writing over 18 have failed marriages or previous marriages (and are on #2 or #3). In counting up the letters, the divorce rate amongst the letter writers is significantly higher than the US national average (currently at 40% per capita according to divorcereform.org) for those letter writers above 18. The author's own statistics on this in the beginning of the book are misleading because she counts remarried the same as married (this, not divorced).


On the whole, I didn't get much out of this book. I was expecting something that would put some of my fantasies in context, or give me cool ideas for some fantasies to fantasize about. But in the end I had trouble relating to this book and chunked it.
