Editorial Review:

All across America, angry fathers are demanding rights. These men claim that since the breakdown of their own families, they have been deprived of access to their children. Joining together to form fathers' rights groups, the mostly white, middle-class men meet in small venues to speak their minds about the state of the American family and, more specifically, to talk about the problems they personally face, for which they blame current child support and child custody policies. Dissatisfied with these systems, fathers' rights groups advocate on behalf of legal reforms that will lower their child support payments and help them obtain automatic joint custody of their children.

In Defiant Dads, Jocelyn Elise Crowley offers a superbly balanced examination of these groups in order to understand why they object to the current child support and child custody systems; what their political agenda, if enacted, would mean for their members' children or children's mothers; and how well they deal with their members' interpersonal issues concerning their ex-partners and their role as parents. Based on interviews with more than 150 fathers' rights group leaders and members, as well as close observation of group meetings and analysis of their rhetoric and advocacy literature, this important book is the first extensive, in-depth account of the emergence of fathers' rights groups in the United States. A nuanced and timely look at an emerging social movement, Defiant Dads is a revealing investigation into the changing dynamics of both the American family and gender relations in American society.

A book for all men 5 out of 5 stars.

When teaching Bible studies on prayer, I have often looked for a tool to help those new to prayer answer the question of "Where do I begin"? This book is a wonderful starting point in that no matter what page you start on, you will always find an inspirational message and a place to begin your prayer time. I often find myself studying 3 or 4 sections at one time.

Editorial Review:

The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health assembles into a single volume a quarter-century's worth of hard-won knowledge about men's health -- knowledge that men need to lead longer, healthier lives.

More than twenty-five years ago, researchers at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health began what have become the largest aggregate studies ever of men's health. Tracking 96,000 American men over decades, these studies provide the ultimate resource on what keeps men healthy -- and what doesn't. The result is The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health:

• Features the most current information on the health-preserving functions of diet, exercise, and over-the-counter drugs and supplements

• Gives straight answers to questions like when drinking alcohol is beneficial and when it's not

• Offers advice on behavior modification and stress control• Includes all the crucial information on diseases that are particularly important to men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, erectile dysfunction, and kidney and bladder problems

• Provides an easy-to-navigate guide to the health-care system that gives balanced views on the benefits and drawbacks of common medical tests

With the authority that only the world's largest and best-known medical school can provide, and the lively, clear presentation that is the hallmark of Harvard Men's Health Watch, the monthly newsletter edited by Dr. Simon, The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health is an essential reference for every man -- and for everyone who cares about a man's health.

How I see it. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I think the problem many have with Deida`s books comes from judging themselves and view others thorough that light. That goes for the content, too.

I agree with Deida`s view on women. The thing is that, unlike many critics, I don`t judge women for it, and in no way do I look at them as inferrior. I respectm appreciate and love them for who they truly are on all levels, and I accept my role as the yang energy in the relatioship. By teaching them how to become stringer, love themselves even more and understand how beautiful they really are.

Love is the only truth.

If male and female are within each of us... 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 9 people found this review helpful.

My understanding of female and male is that these energies are in each human being and must be balanced within for optimum results, whether you are a man or a woman. That readers are "agreeing with" Deida's opinions on women just isn't a great advertisement for this book. It tells me that the book is full of opinions that a lot of people (men, maybe women, too?) hold. There are plenty of popular opinions that don't really contribute to our lives in meaningful ways, though they may feel satisfying for providing a ready-made "answer" when we are faced with something we don't understand or accept. This doesn't get us any closer to moving beyond opinions so that we can allow ourselves and each other to be fully human and alive. Seeking to become "superior" is also cause for inquiry. I recommend a book called Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort. Though this book is a parenting guide, I would venture to say that virtually none of us was parented in a way that encouraged full acceptance of our whole selves, including all our feelings. Naomi's book is a wonderful guide for how to begin the process of acceptance of all of our parts. Rather than reinforcing stereotypes of and opinions about male and female, it describes an inner process that can take us far, possibly where David Deida may be meaning for us to go, beyond the usual traps.

Carthartic Self Discovery 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Great book for learning about yourself and passing along your feelings, foibles and future wishes to your children. Works well for those that had a great relationship with their own father and want to continue the tradition; works even better for those who weren't close to their own father and want to make the most out of that special relationship with their own children.

Editorial Review:

-- Gives children a tool for discovering who their fathers really are

This is a little book that asks big questions: some serious, some playful, some risky. Each is posed with the idea of opening, reopening, rejuvenating, or bringing closure to the primary but often overlooked relationship of Fathers and children. Each prompts reflection and/or discussion: of the father's relationship to the mother, what the father's relationship was like with his father, how the father began his career, how he felt and feels about his children, what his dreams were as a young man.

Questions for My Dad provides a blueprint for uncovering the full dimensions of the man who is also a father.

Painful but necessary reading 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am total James Hollis fan. I have now read four of his books and have found them liberating. Visit his website for a clue for why he is so effective - he is not 30 years of age with limited life experience. He commenced his training only after he completed another successful career in academia. Most would have been content to have lived the life he already had. He has the life skills and experience to help us all illuminate our lives.

The book concerns the burden of being a man, exposing some of the constricting myths that have made manhood so painful. It is a book about men but not necessarily only for men - my wife read it too and found it very moving. It is enriched by the signficant store of Hollis reading in poetry and literature. It is not an easy fix and like anything worthwhile requires your concentrated attention. Further, it is only a beginning rather than an end. Hollis says it himself when he quotes somewhere Jung's description of the psychoanalytical endeavour - it can provide insight but then there must come endurance and courage. You can have a vision of what you would like to be but then comes the fidelity to make that vision a reality.

I would recommend this book highly.

Editorial Review:

Statistics show that black males are disproportionately getting in trouble and being suspended from the nation's school systems. Based on three years of participant observation research at an elementary school, Bad Boys offers a richly textured account of daily interactions between teachers and students to understand this serious problem. Ann Arnett Ferguson demonstrates how a group of eleven- and twelve-year-old males are identified by school personnel as "bound for jail" and how the youth construct a sense of self under such adverse circumstances. The author focuses on the perspective and voices of pre-adolescent African American boys. How does it feel to be labeled "unsalvageable" by your teacher? How does one endure school when the educators predict one's future as "a jail cell with your name on it?" Through interviews and participation with these youth in classrooms, playgrounds, movie theaters, and video arcades, the author explores what "getting into trouble" means for the boys themselves. She argues that rather than simply internalizing these labels, the boys look critically at schooling as they dispute and evaluate the meaning and motivation behind the labels that have been attached to them. Supplementing the perspectives of the boys with interviews with teachers, principals, truant officers, and relatives of the students, the author constructs a disturbing picture of how educators' beliefs in a "natural difference" of black children and the "criminal inclination" of black males shapes decisions that disproportionately single out black males as being "at risk" for failure and punishment.
Bad Boys is a powerful challenge to prevailing views on the problem of black males in our schools today. It will be of interest to educators, parents, and youth, and to all professionals and students in the fields of African-American studies, childhood studies, gender studies, juvenile studies, social work, and sociology, as well as anyone who is concerned about the way our schools are shaping the next generation of African American boys.
Anne Arnett Ferguson is Assistant Professor of Afro-American Studies and Women's Studies, Smith College.

Now, my wife gave me Keeping the Baby Alive as a humorous shower gift, so I didn't actually pay for the book. But before long she knew just how funny it really is when she heard me cackling from two rooms away. The multiple choice tests on Feeding and Walking-Talking made me laugh the loudest. Folks who do not see the humor here, well, my guess is half of them are overly protective wives and the other half are young fathers with a serious case of new-dad ego. Not being that young, maybe it's easier for me not to take parenting too far over the top, and still take time to laugh at myself. Either way, none of the above means I love my little girl any less.

Keeping the Baby Alive till Your Wife Gets Home
