Excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've read many, many books on retirement, being an author of one myself The New Retirement: Revised and Updated: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life.

Mr. Zelinski's book is optimistic and fun, and promotes a positive aspect of retirement that I like - an opportunity to take control of your time. A good read that focues on some of the all-so-important (but often ignored) non-financial aspects of retirement.

Editorial Review:

Retirement does not have to mean the end of life—in fact it can mean a whole new beginning to the life you never had time to explore. In HOW TO RETIRE HAPPY, WILD, AND FREE, best-selling author Ernie J. Zelinksi shows that the key to enjoying an active and satisfying retirement is dependent on much more than just having adequate financial resources. It means paying attention to all aspects of life, including leisure activities, creative pursuits, physical and mental well-being, and solid social support. With its friendly format, lively cartoons, and captivating quotations, Zelinski’s guide offers inspirational advice on how to follow your dreams instead of someone else’s, how to put your retirement in proper perspective, and how to enjoy life after work.

Why Post A Review For A Textbook? 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Reviews are somewhat superfluous in light of the fact that this is a textbook and thus you probably don't have any choice about buying it, as was the case with me. Nonetheless, as textbooks go, I'd have to say I enjoyed this one quite a bit more than most. It's remarkably up-to-date, which is vital in media studies (there will undoubtedly be a 6th edition very soon), and it's a very fast and engaging read. The author doesn't always keep his liberal agenda well hidden, but that is perhaps forgiveable in an age of increasingly conserative media. On the whole, this stands a better chance than most of being a textbook that you actually keep rather than trying to cash in as soon as the course is over. I kept mine.

Very interesting 5 out of 5 stars.

Refreshing 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

With people living longer and having the opportunity to remain in the workforce longer, this is a book that needed to be written. Americans have more options than ever upon reaching retirement age. We can continue to work, we can retire, we can travel, etc. The author, Freedman, spells out in delicious detail those choices, and the result of whatever one we choose.

The book makes a point that others have made, but perhaps spells it out more directly. That point being that you may live longer, and be healthier, than your grandparents, and even your parents. Thus you had best be prepared, financially, mentally and emotionally.

I found the book to be a rather fast read and always interesting. I'd go so far as to say it's the best book about the second half of life I've read. The FUNNIEST book on the subject is Martha Bolton's "Race You To The Fountain of Youth." Hysterical. Race You to the Fountain of Youth: I'm Not Dead Yet (But parts of me are going fast)

I think Freedman's book about the second half of life is worth reading for anyone approaching retirement age. You have important decisions to make. Make then wisely or possibly pay for them later.

Editorial Review:

In one of the most significant social trends of the new century, and the biggest transformation of the American workforce since the women’s movement, members of the baby boom generation are inventing a new phase of work.

Encore tells the stories of encore career pioneers who are not content, or affluent enough, to spend their next thirty years on a golf course. These men and women are moving beyond midlife careers yet refusing to phase out or fade away. As they search for a calling in the second half of life and focus on what matters most, these individuals stand to transform the nature of work in America. They also hold the potential to create a society that balances the joys and responsibilities of contribution across the generations—in other words, one that works better for all of us.

College level geriatrics book 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is simple to read and it covers all topics related with aging and geriatrics. I think this is a good source, but last semester I used one by John Cavanaugh and I considered that one a level higher than thisone. I mean this is a general topic book. I bouth it for my Social Work with the Elderly college class, and I don't really consider it too deep in the topic of social Work, but more a generalized information book.

Editorial Review:

This best-selling book on social aging takes a multidisciplinary approach by considering the many factors - biological, psychological, historical, cultural - that affect the way aging individuals experience the world. The book provides a comprehensive, holistic view of aging that considers an older person's interactions with their social and physical environments, including the immediate environment of family, friends, and home, as well as the larger social structure of community, organizations, and society. Based on the latest research findings, the book offers greater depth and breadth to the critical issues of aging, attending to differences by age and cohort, gender, ethnic minority status, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. For sociologists, social workers, psychologists, health professionals, and students planning to work with the elderly.

Editorial Review:

Old age in America is not what it used to be

In 1994 New York Times writer Dudley Clendinen’s mother—a Southern matron of iron will but creaking bones—sold her house and moved to Canterbury Tower, a geriatric apartment building with full services and a nursing wing in Tampa Bay. There she landed in a microcosm of the New Old Age. Canterbury was filled not just with old Tampa neighbors but also with strangers from across the country. Wealthy, middle class, or barely afloat; Christian, Jewish, or faithless; proud, widowed, or still married; grumpy or dear—they had all come together, at the average age of eighty-six, in search of a last place to live and die.

A Place Called Canterbury is a beautifully written, often hilarious, deeply moving look at how the oldest Americans are living with the reality of living longer. Peopled by brave, daffy, memorable characters determined to grow old with dignity—and to help one another avoid the dreaded nursing wing—A Place Called Canterbury is a kind of soap opera. Likewise, it is a poignant chronicle of the last years of the Greatest Generation and their children, the Boomers, as they are drawn into old age with their parents. A Place Called Canterbury is an essential read for anyone with aging parents and anyone wondering what their own old age will look like.

Aging Well is helpful 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The most useful information I found was the four areas listed for seniors to follow in later life. The recommendations were based on several comprehensive studies which followed people throughout their lifetimes. I did find it odd that in the beginning the author completely overlooked work done by Abraham Maslow many years ago, and instead insisted that he (the author) had been the first to study healthy people. This, however, was a small thing overall and didn't take away from the relevance of the information.

Very Good 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

In her funny and wistful new book, Reeve Lindbergh contemplates entering a new stage in life, turning sixty, the period her mother, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, once described as "the youth of old age." It is a time of life, she writes, that produces some unexpected surprises. Age brings loss, but also love; disaster, but also delight. The second-graders Reeve taught many years ago are now middle-aged; her own children grow, marry, have children themselves. "Time flies," she observes, "but if I am willing to fly with it, then I can be airborne, too." A milestone birthday is also an opportunity to take stock of oneself, although such self-reflection may lead to nothing more than the realization, as Reeve puts it, "that I just seem to continue being me, the same person I was at twelve and at fifty." At sixty, as she observes, "all I really can do with the rest of my life is to...feel all of it, every bit of it, as much as I can for as long as I can."

Age is only one of many subjects that Reeve writes about with perception and insight. In northern Vermont, nature is an integral part of daily life, especially on a farm. Whether it is the arrival and departure of certain birds in spring and fall, wandering turtles, or the springtime ritual of lambing, the natural world is a constant revelation.

With a wry sense of humor, Reeve contemplates the infirmities of the aging body, as well as the many new drugs that treat these maladies. Briefly considering the risks of drug dependency, she writes that "the least we [the "Sixties Generation"] can do for ourselves is live up to our mythology, and take lots of drugs." Legal drugs, that is -- although what sustains us as we grow older is not drugs but an appreciation for life, augmented by compassion, a sense of humor, and common sense.

And of course there is family -- especially with the Lindberghs. Reeve writes about discovering, thirty years after her father's death and two and a half years after her mother's, that her father had three secret families in Europe. She travels to meet them, learning to expand her self-understanding: "daughter of," "mother of," "sister of" -- sister of many more siblings than she'd known, in a family more complicated than even she had imagined.

Forward from Here is a brave book, a reflective book, a funny book -- a book that will charm and fascinate anyone on the journey from middle age to the uncertain future that lies ahead.

Editorial Review:

Not science fiction, but a scientific fact! This book is the first common sense scientific explanation of the aging process and "how to" reverse it. The nutrients that we deliver to our cells burn with oxygen and become acidic wastes after giving energy to our body. The body tries its best to get rid of these acidic wastes through urine and perspiration. Unfortunately, our lifestyle, diet and environment prevent our body to get rid of all the wastes that it generates. Gradually, these leftover acidic wastes accumulate somewhere within our body. Since acid coagulates blood, the blood circulation near the waste areas becomes poor, causing all kinds of degenerative diseases to develop. The author defines the aging process as the accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes within the body. According to this theory, the reduction of accumulated wastes is re verse aging. This book explains how some of the adult degenerative diseases are caused by too much acidic wastes, and describes the various scientific devices and methods to reduce these wastes without any harmful side effects. These devices and methods are being wid ely used in Japan. Alkaline water makers (water ionizers) have been in existence in Japan for more than 40 years. Many in the alternative health industry of water ionizers, magnet and far-infrared devices regard this book as the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference book of its kind in the English language. It is a "must read" for all who are health-conscious.

Required Reading 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Many of you who are considering buying this text are probably doing so for either a regular college course or for one of the Regents College/Excelsior College exams. I decided to earn a second bachelors degree and am working through Excelsior College. This is the required text for one of their exams. I can say that the book is thorough and covers the material that you need to know to pass the test, completely. Like many psyhcology and sociology texts, the subject matter can be dry, but the author seems to do a better than average job of dealing with this. I feel that the fact that I got an 'A' on the exam says very positive things about the text and its ability to prepare you for the testing.

Good overview of aging and elderly issues 5 out of 5 stars.

This textbook was required reading for a psychology class that I took on Adult Development and Aging. The text is very easy to read - the material covers all the major topics related to cognition, memory, development, illnesses, relationships, and end of life experiences. It provides a solid look at all of these topics without going too deep. I would recommend the book for anyone with aging parents - it is helpful to get a sense of what they are experiencing in their lives and to understand what role we play in supporting them.
