"People who develop a habit of emphasizing the positive do better when they are confronted with challenges or difficulties in life." ~ pg. 62

"Seven Strategies for Positive Aging" is a book about positive choices as you grow older. Robert D. Hill presents life-changing ideas and looks at aging as a challenge to look forward to. Not only does he believe you can age more gracefully, he also believes those around you can benefit from your wisdom. He discusses grief, volunteering, forgiveness and being grateful. He deals more with the psychological aspects of aging instead of focusing on skin creams, exercise and supplements.

Robert D. Hill believes you can be emotionally healthier and happier by following some of his positive ideas about how to live. Instead of becoming more and more isolated as we age, the reader is encouraged to reach out into the community and to form friendships that last a lifetime. While death is inevitable, how you live your final years can be a positive experience. I can recommend this book to anyone over 50 although a few of the chapters are appropriate for any age.

~The Rebecca Review

Attitude toward life determines how our old age will be 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

This little gem offers two gifts to the reader: an intimate look into the journal of one who is there (the author is 87)providing us a wonderful awareness of what the feelings are as we age and some very useful tips for preparing for a fulfilling old age. I had borrowed this book from the library, but there were so many rich thoughts that I needed my own copy to underline and mark up. Mary Morrison never understates the deficits that do come with old age but she offers wonderful insights about dealing with them. This book gave me understanding toward my aging mother, aunt and friends. It is also a useful gift for them as they will recognize feelings that they may have thought were theirs alone. I also recommend it for those who are younger because the attitudes we are forming now will be the ones that determine our joy or misery in old age. This is not a heavy book. It is easy reading wth humor and good sense throughout.

Editorial Review:

A daring, yet gently written reflection on one of life's most important periods, Let Evening Come has the sensitivity and humor that will appeal to readers of any age. Mary C. Morrison explores the changes that take place as one ages, the gradual movement away from the center of life--work, family, community--to the periphery. Without glossing over the negative and depressed feelings that this can cause, Morrison highlights the benefits of relaxation, pure enjoyment , and time for reflection that old age can bring. The author shows how finding gallantry, dignity, and a positive outlook amid the changes aging brings is possible and rewarding.

Editorial Review:

Given the 2006 GREAT GERONTOLOGY AWARD for outstanding contribution to gerontological research by the Swedish Gerontological Society

Received a VALUE GROUND AWARD from the journal Aldreomsorg (Old Age Care)

Expanding upon his earlier writings, Dr. Tornstam's latest book explores the need for new theories in gerontology and sets the stage for the development of his theory of gerotranscendence. This theory was developed to address what the author sees as a perpetual mismatch between present theories in social gerontology and existing empirical data.

The development towards gerotranscendence can involve some overlooked developmental changes that are related to increased life satisfaction, as self-described by individuals. The gerotranscendent individual typically experiences a redefinition of the Self and of relationships to others and a new understanding of fundamental existential questions:

  • The individual becomes less self-occupied and at the same time more selective in the choice of social and other activities.
  • There is an increased feeling of affinity with past generations and a decreased interest in superfluous social interaction.
  • The individual might also experience a decrease in interest in material things and a greater need for solitary "meditation." Positive solitude becomes more important.
  • There is also often a feeling of cosmic communion with the spirit of the universe, and a redefinition of time, space, life and death.

Gerotranscendence does NOT imply any state of withdrawal or disengagement, as sometimes erroneously believed. It is not the old disengagement theory in new disguise. Rather, it is a theory that describes a developmental pattern beyond the old dualism of activity and disengagement.

The author supports his theory with insightful qualitative in-depth interviews with older persons and quantitative studies. In addition, Tornstam illustrates the practical implications of the theory of gerotranscendence for professionals working with older adults in care settings. A useful Appendix contains suggestions of how to facilitate personal development toward gerotranscendence.

I Thougfht I Was the only One 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

As a novice in the field of "Oh my God, mom is coming to live with me", I was so heartened to find this book, which BTW I have not even finished yet, and know that the petty annoyances that plague me are not a reason to consume me with guilt. I am not alone. How reassuring it was for me to know that other women are still feeling the tug of their mom's advice, criticism, competition yada yada yada. I know I love my mom but was concerned about my inability to relate to where she is coming from at this point in her life, being 86 years old, as well as how I wanted our relationship to be at my own age of 50. Now I better understand and it has made me a more compassionate daughter. I have found myself sobbing at times reading this book as well as laughing at myself AND my mom. I am now not so afraid to proceed to the end.

Editorial Review:

This text explains what it means to be a good daughter to an ageing mother, why it is so hard, and how daughters can neutralize - or at least recognize - the old, pent-up feelings that interfere with making clear-headed, warm-hearted decisions. It aims to enhance the mother-daughter bond.

Editorial Review:

Is aging a fact of life? Or is it the fulfillment of life? Is aging a curse? Or is it a blessing? In her celebrated National Public Radio series "I'm Too Busy to Talk Now," Connie Goldman explored these questions with scores of prominent creative people over seventy. Now, in The Ageless Spirit, Phillip L. Berman, editor of the highly praised The Courage to Grow Old, has worked with Goldman to fashion the best of these interviews into brilliant and inspiring essays. The result is a treasury of humor and profundity, dazzling wit and hard-earned wisdom, by some of the most fascinating and gifted men and women of our times.

A terrific, tender book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a well-organized and convincing look at Grandmothers. Told through the voices of well-known authors, it is an engaging, funny, and poignant mix of fiction and personal experience. The role of Grandmother as both disciplinarian and comforter shines through brilliantly, serving to portray the women in all their complexity. There are many more essays and stories than poems, however, and readers who want more poetry may not find it to their liking. In my opinion, the poems provide strong insight and solid transition from one theme to another. As with all good writing, the themes are not explicitly stated. This allows the reader to draw their own conclusions and reflect on their own experiences. Even as discipline and disagreements are discussed, respect and love for older women is evident throughout. Although this is a fairly good book for teens fourteen and up, adults may find it speaks more fully to their experience and perspective.

Editorial Review:

"This ... captivating collection is built around the figure of the grandmother--caretaker, disciplinarian, holder of memory.... It ultimately proves a diverse and moving tribute." --Publishers Weekly

Excellent primer on the topic 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book covers, in very good depth, the life cycle from youth through old age. Backed up by plenty of research and statistics, the look is more of one of cold hard fact than of heart, but this is helpful for those just entering gerontology. I was given this text by my supervisor upon entry into a senior residential facility, and I felt I certainly gained from it. Maybe not as handy to those well-read on the topic, but a very good basic guide and introduction. Recommended.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive book helps readers process a clear picture of adult development and aging with the help and results of intensive scientific research. It challenges common stereotypes about this subject matter, and interprets the research data into an optimistic yet realistic appraisal of the many problems faced by the elderly in today's society. Chapter topics look at independence and intimacy in young adulthood; responsibility and failure in the middle years; the reintegration or despair of later life; research methodology; families; careers; personality development; learning and memory; intellectual and biological development; mental disorders; and death and bereavement. For individuals who want to view the potential richness of life—at all stages, and/or understand the lives of older adults they may care for.
