Editorial Review:

Full of advice for family caregivers, this one of a kind book written by a family caregiver provides lessons from family caregivers across the country, tips for interacting with the healthcare system to better meet the needs of families dealing with chronic illness, and a cogent presentation of how public policy has a profound effect on even the most intimate details of life in caregiving families. Suzanne Mintz has deftly woven together self-help ideas and emotional guidance for individual family caregivers with an inspirational call to arms for health policy change. Through her own powerful personal story, she tackles the range of emotions and the challenges facing every caregiver. And most important, she offers advice on how to ask for help. In addition she has taken the discussion of family caregiving issues to the next level and clearly explains why they demand the attention of our elected officials. Whether you are a current or future family caregiver, or a health policy advocate, you'll want to read, and re-read, this book. As the mother of a son with a disability, I only wish I'd read Suzanne's book before I brought him home from the hospital. --Judy Woodruff, senior correspondent, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer This is a revised and updated edition of Love, Honor & Value

For All Ages and for All Time 5 out of 5 stars.

Like her former partner Robert A. Johnson, Helen Luke is a master of rendering the psychological meanings in great literature understandable and relevant to all people wishing to gain a deeper level of understanding about the growtn of the human soul. Having plumbed the depths of her own psycho-spiritual aging process(Such Stuff As Dreams are Made On), Ms. Luke has created a work fusing literary scholarship and personal experience into a guide for all of us to follow towards the inevitable. When the time comes for me to plant my oar (read her interpretation of The Odyssey)and turn towards the life of prayer, song and storytelling I will be eternally grateful to have had this wonderful Wise Woman as my guide. Deserving of a wide readership.

Editorial Review:

In this classic text on aging wisely, the renowned Jungian analyst Helen M. Luke reflects on the final journeys described in Homer’s Odyssey, Shakespeare’s King Lear and The Tempest, and T. S. Eliot’s Little Gidding, and also on suffering. In examining some of the great masterpieces of literature produced by writers at the ends of their lives, she elucidates the difference between growing old and disintegrating and encourages us to grow emotionally and mentally in this culminating stage of our own lives.

Editorial Review:

"Old simply isn't what it used to be," writes gerontologist Ken Dychtwald, bestselling author of Age Wave. In the 20th century, the number of Americans ages 65 and older increased from 3 million to 33 million. This number is likely to double by 2035! After 30 years in the field of aging, Dychtwald is convinced that "'Age Power' will rule the 21st century" and that "dramatic anti-aging breakthroughs" in supernutrition, hormone replacement, gene therapy, bionics, and organ cloning will be discovered in the near future.

This all sounds like wonderful news, except that Dychtwald fears that "we are woefully unprepared" for the aging of the boomers. He sounds a wake-up call to "the five social train wrecks we need to prevent." For example, society will face epidemics of chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's (14 million Americans will have it by the mid-21st century). Tens of millions will live their long, last years in poverty. And living longer will be worthless if the elderly spend their last decades doing little more than watching television--40 million retirees average 43 hours a week of TV now!

Age Power describes the aging-related dangers ahead of us and solutions (both social and personal) for preventing them. "Tips to age-proof your life" at the end of many chapters help you put the points into action. "Many of the painful, punishing challenges of old age could be prevented if informed choices were made earlier in life," says Dychtwald, and although this serious book is not easy reading, it will help you make much more informed choices. --Joan Price

Group Work with Elders 5 out of 5 stars.

I would highly rocommend this book for those who work with people in nursing or retirement homes. I found this book very helpful in getting older adults to express their feelings and share stories from their pasts. This helps to build community with the other people in the group. It also helps build self esteem and friendships with others. Ms. Link has done an excellent job of presenting opportunities through these exercises to help chaplains, ministers, social workers, etc. to be able to offer encouragement and help to our older adults. This book is well worth the investment!

A good start 3 out of 5 stars.

This book provides a good starting point for reminiscence groups with older adults. I find many of the exercises, however, to be infantilizing and in need of modification before use in a group.

Extremely Helpful 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Updated to offer professionals and students an even more thorough account of therapy with older adults, the second edition of Bob G. Knight's best-selling book now expands on important issues while presenting his maturity-specific model as a conceptual framework. Sensitively linking both research and experience, Psychotherapy with Older Adults, Second Edition provides a practical account of the knowledge, technique, and skills necessary to work with older adults in a therapeutic relationship. This volume considers the essentials of gerontology as well as the nature of therapy in greater depth, focusing on special content areas and common themes. Also a major addition is a comprehensive discussion of assessment and options for intervention. Numerous case examples illustrate the dynamics of the therapeutic task and issues covered in therapy and stress the human element in working with older adults. A new concluding chapter considers ethical questions and the future of psychotherapy with older adults. A vital resource for practicing therapists and counselors who work with older adults, the second edition of Psychotherapy with Older Adults also works well as a text for advanced students in psychology, social work, and gerontology.

Absolutely incredible, scary, but has given me a mission. 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 31 people found this review helpful.

I first came across "Age Wave' as a footnote in an insurance flyer. Something made me want to read it. It had to be ordered it since it was hard to find, but I am so glad that I followed my gut instinct. I have read, reread, highligted, bookmarked and folded over corners in my at least seven times through it. The reality has become such an integral portion of my life that I left my position with an insurance agency to do what I really feel is important -- to educate people and TRY to make them understand the importance of long term care insurance to protect our parents, ourselves, and our children. I have never in my life been an activist (during Viet Nam I was in a "coma"), but after having read Age Wave, I have become an activist. I agree that this can be a more devastating situation than any in our age or any preceeding. Ken Dychtwald and his wife are Renaissance people in putting all of the inevitabilities of the modern technologies that we embrace in perspective. What they are trying to tell us, without a doubt, is that we have to cover our butts or "get out of Dodge." The wonderful world that our parents and we as "Boomers" have tried to to build will not last unless we get rid of the denial that people do age and need care and it is not always available. We cannot hide money any longer to qualify for Medicaid. We cannot expect the government to pay for it. The governmet has already told us that. We cannot expect our children and grandchildren to pay 50 to 60 % of their paychecks for entitlements so that we can ignore needed protection or hide money. We need to be responsible once again in our lives and accept the fact that we will age, and will develop chronic illnesses because of advanced age and we will need care. So we must protect our world and our heirs from the devastating effects. I can't wait to read the new book.

Editorial Review:

Based on 15 years of research by a world-renowned expert on aging, this is the first book to explore the profound effects our aging population, and the changing demographics that go with it, will have on every aspect of society, and on our personal plans and dreams for the future.

Erin Hits Homer Again! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Sullivan's latest book is the one you've been waiting for whether you know it or not!

With her usual in-depth, insightful style, Erin gives anyone approaching or in process of the midlife phase of life much information on this cycle we must all navigate.

"To approach aging with a sense of honor and purpose means perceiving it as such: an honorable and purposeful task, one that is not over until it is over".

This speaks not only to the "baby boomers" who are currently in or entering middle age, but to those of us who attempt to counsel and guide those with serious aging issues.

"Even the ancient Greeks worried about it and fretted over the future", she states, and you won't be disappointed with the larger perspective this book will give you on these issues which are common to all humankind!

Astrology Of Midlife and Aging 5 out of 5 stars.
