Simians, Cyborgs, and Women written by Donna J. Haraway is a compilation of ten essays from 1978 through 1989 that focus on the idea that nature is constructed, not discovered, and truth is made, not found. Donna J. Haraway is a science historian and Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She explains her ideas in this book through a strong feminist viewpoint.
Haraway divides her book into three sections, each section addressing different topics. The first section of the book discusses feminist struggles of developing knowledge and behavior in the social lives of monkeys and apes. The second part of the book discusses contests for the power to determine stories about nature and experience. The last part of the book discusses the cyborg embodiment and the fate of feminist concepts of gender, feminist ethics and even discusses the immune system as a biopolitical map of the chief system of difference in a postmodern world.
My opinions on this book are very one sided. I did not enjoy reading it at all. I thought that the book was very difficult to read. The book had a great deal of words in it that I have never seen before. I found myself constantly looking to a dictionary just so I could get the message behind what Haraway was trying to relay. One of the other reasons that the book was difficult to read was because it talked about many theories and ideas that I have never heard about before. This would have not been a big issue if the theories had explained more before they were used in proving Haraway's arguments. A direct example of this is when Haraway uses the theories that Zuckerman and Rowell have about reproduction. There was one part of the book that I thought was fairly interesting and that was Haraway's idea, that people in today's modern world are cyborgs because we incorporate so much technology into our lives. I thought that that idea was a very clever way to describe our highly technical world. I went into reading this book with an open mind and I left the book with an open mind. Even though I did not enjoy reading this book and I thought it was very boring after reading it I am now more aware about how different people think and their point of view and that is always a valuable thing to take away from an experience.

The environmental movement has often been accused of being overly negative--trying to stop "progress." The Nature of Design, on the other hand, is about starting things, specifically an ecological design revolution that changes how we provide food, shelter, energy, materials, and livelihood, and how we deal with waste.

Ecological design is an emerging field that aims to recalibrate what humans do in the world according to how the world works as a biophysical system. Design in this sense is a large concept having to do as much with politics and ethics as with buildings and technology.

The book begins by describing the scope of design, comparing it to the Enlightenment of the 18th century. Subsequent chapters describe barriers to a design revolution inherent in our misuse of language, the clockspeed of technological society, and shortsighted politics. Orr goes on to describe the critical role educational institutions might play in fostering design intelligence and what he calls "a higher order of heroism."

Appropriately, the book ends on themes of charity, wilderness, and the rights of children. Astute yet broadly appealing, The Nature of Design combines theory, practicality, and a call to action.

I wanted to take the Human Geography AP Exam but we didn't have a course at our school so I had to study for it on my own. As there are no published AP guides, my only source of information was this textbook. I not only scored a 5 on the exam, but I also tested out of the second semester of Human Geography once I got to college as well!! Fabulous textbook!

First off, let me say that currently I'm a 9th grader that is taking the AP Human Geography course at my school. This is only the third year the AP program has offered this course, and only the first year (I believe,) and I am so glad that our school picked this book.

De Blij presents the information in such a way that it is understandable by high school students, and yet it still retains a very intellectual atmosphere throughout the textbook. He also presents the information in an unbiased context. And during units on religion, and culture (major parts of Human Geography) he doesn't try to preach a religion, or express a bias toward any one.

The information in the textbook is also very accurate and reliable. And during times when there is no exact "right" answer, you won't have to worry about getting a completely rejected view in the academic world, since H.J. de Blij is a highly respected academic.

I could go on and on about how great Human Geography: Culture, Society and Space is, but you can find out more about it by getting the book. I really enjoyed reading it (though I still have a couple more chapters to go), and with the AP Human Geography test looming on May 5, I feel very well prepared for it. If you will be taking the AP Human Geography course in the upcoming year, I highly recommend you to request your school to purchase this book as the main textbook for use. And if your school won't get it, I would still recommend you to purchase it on your own. It's worth every dollar of it. And if you aren't, and your a college student taking a Human Geography course, this book would still be a great study tool.

Oh, and wish me and everyone else taking the AP Human Geography test on May 5!

man abuses our environment

there, now you dont have to sit throug 400 pages of ranting about how statistics are proving we destroy our environment. If you need this book to realize we are a destructive race; well then maybe you should read it, its so repetative you are bound to get the idea.

Stunning photographs, concise maps, and simple text that introduces the basics of a culture, a country, and a way of life make this book great "back seat" reading. Kids shouldn't be watching tv in the car anyway. Books like this will make the ride more enjoyable and enriching. It also would be a great addition to a pediatrician's waiting room, or a dentist.

I use this book in my grade 4 classroom. The pictures and writing help my United State's students better understand the world around them. This book is a favorite in my classroom.

Excellent book. The only thing is about Brazil. I lived in Brazil and only the super rich speak English and even some of the wealthy do not. If you go to Brazil, expect to hear Portuguese.

An excellent textbook for an introductory geography class 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent textbook for an introductory geography class. The first chapter is a general introduction with an explanation of some of the terms and vocabulary used. The second chapter covers world physical geography. The rest of the chapters each covers a different region of the world. Each chapter is divided into five sections: environment, population and settlement, culture, geopolitics, and economic and social development. This book describes the details of the different regions of the world and gives us a good idea of what life is like in these different regions. And, it ties what we learn about the different regions to the overall theme of diversity and globalization. The accompanying maps and photographs are beautiful.

This book is so broad and not easy to understand unless you are a geography major or a graduate geography students. Not only me, but other classmates aren't enjoying the book. If you can get another geography book that uses simpler terms.
