Editorial Review:

This book presents the first comprehensive introduction to arts-based research (ABR) practices, which scholars in multiple disciplines are fruitfully using to reveal information and represent experiences that traditional methods cannot capture. Each of the six major ABR genres--narrative inquiry, poetry, music, performance, dance, and visual art--is covered in chapters that introduce key concepts and tools and present an exemplary research article by a leading ABR practitioner. Patricia Leavy discusses the kinds of research questions these innovative approaches can address and offers practical guidance for applying them in all phases of a research project, from design and data collection to analysis, interpretation, representation, and evaluation. Chapters include checklists to guide methodological decision making, discussion questions, and recommended print and online resources.

Editorial Review:

How do social structures and group behaviors arise from the interaction of individuals? Growing Artificial Societies approaches this question with cutting-edge computer simulation techniques. Fundamental collective behaviors such as group formation, cultural transmission, combat, and trade are seen to "emerge" from the interaction of individual agents following a few simple rules.

In their program, named Sugarscape, Epstein and Axtell begin the development of a "bottom up" social science that is capturing the attention of researchers and commentators alike.

The study is part of the 2050 Project, a joint venture of the Santa Fe Institute, the World Resources Institute, and the Brookings Institution. The project is an international effort to identify conditions for a sustainable global system in the next century and to design policies to help achieve such a system.

Growing Artificial Societies is also available on CD-ROM, which includes about 50 animations that develop the scenarios described in the text.

Copublished with the Brookings Institution.

Editorial Review:

The development of communication as a discipline has resulted in an explosion of scales tapping various aspects of interpersonal, mass, organizational, and instructional communication. These scales are scattered across a bewildering array of journals, books, dissertations, and research reports--a situation that often hinders awareness and use of particular measures. Intended as a partial remedy to the situation, this sourcebook brings together a variety of scales that measure a number of important communication constructs. The scales presented are drawn from areas of interpersonal, mass, organizational, and instructional communication--areas in which the use of formal, quantitative scales is particularly well developed. Communication Research Measures reflects the recent important emphasis on developing and improving the measurement base of the communication discipline. It results in an equal amount of labor saved on the part of the scholars, students, and practitioners who find this book useful, and it contributes in a significant way to research efforts.

Editorial Review:

The fourth edition of Design and Analysis continues to offer a readily accessible introduction to the designed experiment in research and the statistical analysis of the data from such experiments. Unique because it emphasizes the use of analytical procedures, this book is appropriate for all as it requires knowledge of only the most fundamental mathematical skills and little or no formal statistical background. Topics include: single- and two-factor designs with independent groups of subjects; corresponding designs with multiple observations; analysis of designs with unequal sample sizes; analysis of covariance; designs with three factors, including all combinations of between-subjects and within-subject factors; random factors and statistical generalization; and nested factors. This book lives up to its name as a handbook, because of its usefulness as a source and guide to researchers who require assistance in both planning a study and analyzing its results.

A Brilliant, Readable Introduction to the Logic of Sociology 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautifully written, clear and understandable analysis of the diverse ways of thinking in contemporary sociology. It is written to be understandable by undergraduates who are serious about the discipline and are about to undertake research on their own. Graduate students will find it indispensible as they make very important decisions about their own careers. Reading Abbott is much easier than trying to figure these things out on your own . The author's concept of "fractual heuristics" is an innovative and insightful way of thinking about the interaction of different kinds of ideas in the discipline. There is too much here for me to summarize in a short review, but it is well worth reading.
Ted Goertzel, Professor of Sociology, Rutgers University.

Editorial Review:

"Methods of Discovery is organized around strategies for deepening arguments in order to find the best ways to study social phenomena. This exciting book is not about the mechanics of doing social science research, but about habits of thinking that enable students to use those mechanics in new ways, by coming up with new ideas and combining them more effectively with old ones. Examples from throughout the social sciences help show how these moves can open new lines of thinking. Each chapter covers several moves and their reverses (if these exist), discussing particular examples of the move as well as its logical and theoretical structure. This book offers readers a new way of thinking about directions for their research and new ways to imagine information relevant to their research problems.

Editorial Review:

This new edition of Gillian Rose’s bestselling Visual Methodologies text has been comprehensively revised and updated.

Visual Methodologies, Second Edition provides a critical introduction to the study and interpretation of visual culture. An introductory chapter contextualizes the theoretical approach to working with visual materials. Subsequent chapters each examine a visual method in detail and assess the method’s strengths and weaknesses. The methods discussed in the new edition are: compositional interpretation, content analysis, semiology, psychoanalysis, discourse analysis, audience studies (new), an anthropological approach to understanding visual materials (new), and on making images as part of social science research (new).

New to the Second Edition:
  • A completely new chapter on how to use the book
  • Each chapter follows the same structure, making comparisons between methods easier
  • Three extra chapters, each discussing a method not covered in the First Edition
Visual Methodologies is essential reading for students and researchers involved in the study of visual culture in the social sciences.

A good practical guide for social research 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

One of the good things about this book is that it contains many useful charts and diagrams. For example, the procedure of making guttman scales is explained in an easily understandable manner with example charts. Suggestions for further readings also contain many useful and recent materials. As a practical guide for social research, I recommend this book, because it is reader-friendly and does not require a lot of reading; everything needed is found at a glance.

Editorial Review:

"You may be wondering why you need to study research methods to prepare yourself for a career in human services." This accessible text will help you to better understand the connection between human service research and practice. Find out the growing number of ways that research is being applied to practice today. With APPLIED SOCIAL RESEARCH, you'll see how research and practice are linked and explore how technology devices such as cell phones, PDAs and computers are affecting research technology.

Reminding me about Statistics 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Recently I started back to school to obtain my PhD in Marketing. I have been having trouble remembering all my statistical terms since the last time I was in school 20+ years ago for my MBA. This text is SOO VERRRYY Helpful! It is humorous and in Layman's word for understanding. Highly recommend if being asked to do your MANOVA's ANOVA's Chi Sq & Z's again.

Editorial Review:

With humor, extraordinary clarity, and carefully paced explanations and examples, Bruce Thompson shows readers how to use the latest techniques for interpreting research outcomes as well as how to make statistical decisions that result in better research. Utilizing the general linear model to demonstrate how different statistical methods are related to each other, Thompson integrates a broad array of methods involving only a single dependent variable, ranging from classical and robust location descriptive statistics, through effect sizes, and on through ANOVA, multiple regression, loglinear analysis and logistic regression. Special features include SPSS and Excel demonstrations that offer opportunities, in the book’s datasets and on Thompson’s website, for further exploration of statistical dynamics.
