Editorial Review:

Thoroughly revised and updated, the fourth edition of this successful text offers a wealth of new research examples and references, accessible diagrams of essential concepts and processes, and extended coverage of core methods and recent developments. Striking a balance between specific techniques and the underlying logic of scientific inquiry, Approaches to Social Research, Fourth Edition, provides a lucid treatment of the four major approaches to research--experimentation, survey research, field research, and the use of available data. While advocating a multiple-methods strategy that treats these approaches as complementary rather than mutually exclusive, the book contains a detailed account of the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.
Opening chapters draw students into the subject by illustrating the practicality of the study of research methods and outlining the scientific foundations of social research. The text then follows a typical research project, beginning with research design, measurement, and sampling. It proceeds with data collection and concludes with data processing and analysis. This fourth edition includes new and revised chapters that address the role of emerging technologies and the Internet in social research. Extensively updated research examples and a clear exposition make complex issues accessible to students with no background in social research. Approaches to Social Research, Fourth Edition, is an ideal textbook for graduates and advanced undergraduates in the social sciences, and it also provides important guidance for researchers in sociology and related disciplines.

Editorial Review:

This thorough revision of Babbie's standard-setting book presents a succinct, straightforward introduction to the field of research methods as practiced by social scientists. Contemporary examples+such as terrorism, Alzheimer's disease, anti-gay prejudice and education, and the legalization of marijuana make this Fourth Edition thoroughly fascinating as it introduces you to the "how-tos" and "whys" of social research methods. The book's new qualitative coverage combined with its already strong quantitative material makes this new edition Babbie's best yet. Babbie, long respected in the field and renowned for his engaging and friendly writing style, gives you the tools you need for understanding social research methods and for applying these concepts both inside and outside the classroom+as a researcher and as a consumer of research. With a strong emphasis on ethics and additional qualitative material, this Fourth Edition is authoritative yet student-friendly . . . and engaging enough to help you connect the dots between the world of social research and the real world.

Classic book with timeless advice 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

After reaading many books on questionnaires, I find this one provides the most generally useful advice in a readable, compact format. Much cheaper and more advanced than the Survey Kit (also published by Sage), Fowler's book should find a place on the bookshelf of anyone writing questionnaires or surveys.

Editorial Review:

What is a good question? Although there are several potential sources for error in survey data, the validity of surveys depends on the design of the questions asked. This book shows how to word and format a question, write questions that will evoke the kind of answers for which they were designed, and empirically evaluate survey questions. In addition, the book covers topics such as how to write good questions aimed at collecting information about objective facts and events, how to measure subjective phenomena, some alternative methods for attacking common measurement problems; shows how to evaluate the extent to which questions are consistently understood and administered, and explains how to evaluate the data resulting from a set of questions. A clearly written book, Improving Survey Questions enables researchers and practitioners to write better survey questions and helps users of survey data to evaluate their data more critically.

Editorial Review:

"This highly diffuse, personal orientation to research is an interesting contrast to more impersonal works and a useful reminder that the results of research are often intimately bound with the individuals who collect the data. The most likely audience for the work is beginning researchers who are interested in exploring avenues of qualitative research. The breezy style and anecdotal content may. . . make the work most suitable as a source for undergraduate methods courses.

--Herbert Snyder in Library and Information Science Research

"This work is intended to help students in social work, sociology, and political science develop skills in qualitative interviewing."

--Journal of Social Work Education

"This engaging and readable book is an introductory overview about how to design, collect, code, interpret, and present the results of qualitative research based upon interviews. . . . The authors are two experienced academics. . . . The book will be most appropriate for professors and students who are exploring qualitative research methods for the first time. When combined with more detailed articles and illustrative exercises, it could also serve very well as the organizing text for an advanced undergraduate or first graduate course in qualitative interviewing. Happily, its conversational tone and absence of pedagogical jargon also will make the book inviting and accessible to practitioners in new product development and market research. . . . This is a usable and enjoyable introduction to a research approach that has seen increasing use in recent years for new product and process introductions. Its primary audience is academicians and students who will find it a very good introductory text. Practitioners, particularly those who wish to ''get close to customers,'' will find here some useful advice about how to question customers and how to read their answers. More important, they will find out what to expect of qualitative market researchers who work with new product development or implementation teams."

--Patricia W. Meyers in The Journal of Product Innovation Management

Qualitative Interviewing provides a comprehensive, up-to-date introduction to the theory and practice of qualitative interviewing. With this volume, qualitative researchers will learn how to design research based on interview data; stimulate conversation; absorb what is being said; and synthesize, analyze, and present an informed description of the data. The authors, both experienced teachers and researchers with nearly 50 years of post-Ph.D. research experience in qualitative interviewing, emphasize the importance of cultural, contextual, and personal influences on the sharing and unveiling of meaning. Their book links qualitative interviewing techniques with theories of how people communicate meaning. Qualitative Interviewing is an essential text for a wide range of students and social science researchers who do interviews as part of case studies or as ethnographic research.

Exellent text for introducing college students to Geography 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I have used this text for approximately a year and found that the students are able to comprehend geography better with a systematic approach than a regional one. One of the things that sold me on this text was the auxillary material, particularly the webpage. The book is very easy to read and has excellent illustrations and photos. Needless to say, I highly recommend this text.

Editorial Review:

Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation fills an important gap in qualitative research literature by specifically addressing the fast-growing practice of qualitative master's studies and doctoral dissertations in colleges and universities throughout the world. Many students struggle with turning qualitative research projects into a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation because the research itself is inherently messy. To address this challenge, authors Linda Dale Bloomberg and Marie Volpe have distilled decades of experience into a first-of-its-kind, highly practical reference for graduate students.

  • Offers “roadmaps” in the form of tables, figures, and matrices. These are intended as “working tools” to clarify thinking, and to organize and present data.
  • Presents an integrative summary discussion at the end of each chapter that highlights key concepts and issues raised in the chapter
  • Provides comprehensive checklists at the end of each chapter to review what has been accomplished before proceeding to the subsequent chapter.
  • Includes an annotated bibliography in each chapter for easy referral to additional relevant sources.
Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation is a must-have resource for any student contemplating a qualitative research project, thesis, or dissertation, and equally valuable to researchers undertaking and writing up their qualitative research.

Early Praise for Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation

“Bloomberg and Volpe wisely, caringly, and thoughtfully share their hard-earned experience and the experiences of many doctoral students’ journeys from diverse universities, which are profound. Their wisdom is offered in an easy-to-understand fashion and provides practical advice for doctoral students as they move forward in each and every step of their dissertation journeys. They speak eloquently to broad and intricate principles and nuances of qualitative research and to how to work with qualitative data. This is extremely valuable book and I suggest that you use it in your courses as you work to support your students-and your teaching. I will use it in mine. It is a gift!"
-Ellie Drago-Severson, Teachers College, Columbia University

“Working in the post-course limbo that is the dissertation stage is the hardest part of the life of a graduate student. Drawing on the experiences of doctoral students across the United States, Linda Dale Bloomberg and Marie Volpe aim to provide a practical and accessible guide to dealing with the obstacles and pitfalls that confront researchers as they struggle with writing a qualitative dissertation.”
-Stephen D. Brookfield, University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis-St Paul

“Bloomberg and Volpe have written a refreshingly pragmatic, must-read text that is geared toward getting doctoral students back on the fast track to completing their qualitative dissertations. They expertly unveil the shroud of mysticism that surrounds the process of writing a qualitative dissertation by writing in a succinct, straightforward manner, providing concrete examples, and offering ample practical advice and hope. The ideas presented are extraordinarily clear and simple, yet comprehensive in breadth and profound in depth - precisely what's needed to complete a qualitative dissertation.”
-Julia Sloane, Founder of Sloan International Consulting

“The dissertation study can seem, to many people, like the longest, loneliest, and most difficult open book exam that they will ever take. Bloomberg and Volpe give not just a clear roadmap, but a personal account of the journey - both of the research task and of the interpersonal and political processes that must be navigated to complete it. What I like best is that they do not stop with the dissertation document, but help the student think beyond the study to the publications and potential research streams that it may launch. This then is really a mentoring guide for new scholars, not just a great resource for students writing a dissertation.”
-Karen E. Watkins, University of Georgia

“Bloomberg and Volpe’s Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation: A Roadmap From Beginning to End, is a must read for students committed to the wonderful and rewarding journey that transforms an idea requiring passionate research, into a dissertation that merits scholarly and confident completion. This work is an essential resource, and in it are meaningful lessons for all students serious about qualitative research.”
-John M. Carfora, Amherst College

“This book does so much to de-mystify both the process of conducting qualitative research as well as writing a dissertation. Not only do I wish the book had been available when I was a student, but I wish all of my advisees had been able to have such a rich resource. This book will definitely be required reading and reference for my future students!”
-Barbara A. Macaulay, University of Massachusetts

“Completing a qualitative research project can be a messy task for both experienced and inexperienced researchers, and for those who are working on their first qualitative project for their dissertation, the ambiguity can be a stopper. The authors “walk beside” their readers on this challenging learning journey, providing both concrete tools for bringing clarity to some of the conceptual challenges and practical suggestions for crafting a quality dissertation. I see this book as an invaluable aid for my students.”
-Ann K. Brooks, University of Texas, Austin

Editorial Review:

For over twenty years Charles C. Ragin has been at the forefront of the development of innovative methods for social scientists. In Redesigning Social Inquiry, he continues his campaign to revitalize the field, challenging major aspects of the conventional template for social science research while offering a clear alternative.
Redesigning Social Inquiry provides a substantive critique of the standard approach to social research—namely, assessing the relative importance of causal variables drawn from competing theories. Instead, Ragin proposes the use of set-theoretic methods to find a middle path between quantitative and qualitative research. Through a series of contrasts between fuzzy-set analysis and conventional quantitative research, Ragin demonstrates the capacity for set-theoretic methods to strengthen connections between qualitative researchers’ deep knowledge of their cases and quantitative researchers’ elaboration of cross-case patterns. Packed with useful examples, Redesigning Social Inquiry will be indispensable to experienced professionals and to budding scholars about to embark on their first project.

Simply the best: read it at least twice 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I read this book twice. The first time, I thought that it was excellent, the best compendium of ideas of social science by arguably the best thinker in the field. I took copious notes, etc. I agreed with its patchwork-style approach to rational decision making. I knew that it had huge insights applicable to my refusal of general theories [they don't work], rather limit ourselves to nuts and bolts [they work].
Then I started reading it again, as the book tends to locate itself by my bedside and sneaks itself in my suitcase when I go on a trip. It is as if the book wanted me to read it. It is what literature does to you when it is at its best. So I realized why: it had another layer of depth --and the author distilled ideas from the works of Proust, La Rochefoucault, Tocqueville, Montaigne, people with the kind of insights that extend beyond the ideas, and that makes you feel that a reductionist academic treatment of the subject will necessary distort it [& somehow Elster managed to combine Montaigne and Kahneman-Tversky]. So as an anti-Platonist I finally found a rigorous treatment of human nature that is not Platonistic --not academic (in the bad sense of the word).
Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Editorial Review:

This book is an expanded and revised edition of the author's critically acclaimed volume Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences. In twenty-six succinct chapters, Jon Elster provides an account of the nature of explanation in the social sciences. He offers an overview of key explanatory mechanisms in the social sciences, relying on hundreds of examples and drawing on a large variety of sources-psychology, behavioral economics, biology, political science, historical writings, philosophy and fiction. Written in accessible and jargon-free language, Elster aims at accuracy and clarity while eschewing formal models.
