Editorial Review:

This reader collects the texts, videos, and computer programs—many of them now almost impossible to find—that chronicle the history and form the foundation of the still-emerging field of new media. General introductions by Janet Murray and Lev Manovich, along with short introductions to each of the texts, place the works in their historical context and explain their significance. The texts were originally published between World War II—when digital computing, cybernetic feedback, and early notions of hypertext and the Internet first appeared—and the emergence of the World Wide Web—when they entered the mainstream of public life.

The texts are by computer scientists, artists, architects, literary writers, interface designers, cultural critics, and individuals working across disciplines. The contributors include (chronologically) Jorge Luis Borges, Vannevar Bush, Alan Turing, Ivan Sutherland, William S. Burroughs, Ted Nelson, Italo Calvino, Marshall McLuhan, Billy Kl?Jean Baudrillard, Nicholas Negroponte, Alan Kay, Bill Viola, Sherry Turkle, Richard Stallman, Brenda Laurel, Langdon Winner, Robert Coover, and Tim Berners-Lee. The CD accompanying the book contains examples of early games, digital art, independent literary efforts, software created at universities, and home-computer commercial software. Also on the CD is digitized video, documenting new media programs and artwork for which no operational version exists. One example is a video record of Douglas Engelbart's first presentation of the mouse, word processor, hyperlink, computer-supported cooperative work, video conferencing, and the dividing up of the screen we now call non-overlapping windows; another is documentation of Lynn Hershman's Lorna, the first interactive video art installation.

A must read for scale development 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This is a must read for those laymen who would like to get started with developing their own measurement scales. Where many references in scale development drop a chapter in scale reliability and validity testing, they are far from comprehensive. Here is a monograph that discusses this critical issue in detail. It is written in a easily understood manner, with good balance between theories and applications. The use of factor analytic techniques (exploratory) for testing scale validity though assumes readers a prerequisite understand of this multivariate technique.

Editorial Review:

This guide demonstrates how social scientists assess the reliability and validity of empirical measurements. This monograph is a good starting point for those who want to familiarize themselves with the current debates over "appropriate" measurement designs and strategies.

Editorial Review:

Here, in the fourth edition of Statistics for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, the authors have refined their text by building off an already well-established approach - emphasizing the intuitive, deemphasizing the mathematical, and explaining everything in direct, simple language - but also going beyond these principles to both further student understanding and stimulate the long-suffering community of statistics instructors. By using definitional formulas to emphasize the concepts of statistics, rather than rote memorization, students work problems in a way that keeps them constantly aware of the underlying logic of what they are doing.

Editorial Review:

"This book fills an important gap in the action research literature by specifically addressing the growing practice of action research master’s studies and doctoral dissertations in colleges and universities throughout the world. Like the authors’ previous work, this book provides a broad and clear overview of the varieties of action research. The discussion of the underlying choices that action researchers operating in a university degree program need to make and how such choices affect the quality of an action research project from different perspectives is an extremely valuable resource for students and faculty. I plan to use this book with my own graduate students on a regular basis.”
-Ken Zeichner, University of Wisconsin, Madison

"Finally, a thoughtful, accessible, and immensely helpful volume designed to promote dialogue among doctoral students and faculty about dissertation studies grounded in the everyday worlds of practice. By creating spaces for deep discussion about the decisions dissertators make (rather than proposing and arguing for particular solutions), the book sets doctoral researchers on their own quest for meaning, clarity and coherence. The rhetoric and contents of the book thus mirror its authors’ commitment to agency for doctoral students seeking to make their inquiries of value both within and beyond the academy.”
-Susan Lytle, University of Pennsylvania

“The authors have deftly produced a thoughtful, comprehensive, and much needed overview of the process of creating an action research dissertation that is sure to benefit generations of students and their faculty mentors.”
-Davydd Greenwood, Cornell University

The Action Research Dissertation should be required reading for any student contemplating using an action research approach in a thesis or dissertation project.  Kathryn Herr and Gary Anderson serve as able and amiable navigators through the challenging but equally rewarding process of planning, carrying out, and completing an action research dissertation. Clear explanations, compelling exemplars, and an honest discussion of the challenges of conducting an action research project combined with a sense of the passion and commitment of those who choose this path, make the volume a balanced and engaging guide to all would-be action researchers.”
-Mary Brydon-Miller, University of Cincinnati

Many students struggle with turning action research projects into a Master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation and receive little guidance from their advisors. To address this need, authors Kathryn Herr and Gary L. Anderson have distilled decades of action research experience into a first-of-its-kind reference for graduate students.

The Action Research Dissertation: A Guide for Students and Faculty provides an accessible roadmap that honors the complexity of action research. It will show that action research is appropriate not only for a dissertation, but also a deeply rewarding experience for both the researcher and participants. This book helps students understand the ways action research dissertations are different from more traditional dissertations and prepares students and their committees for the unique dilemmas they may face, such as validity, positionality, design, write-up, ethics, and defense of the dissertation.

The Action Research Dissertation is a must-have resource for any student contemplating an action research project, thesis, or dissertation, and equally valuable to researchers undertaking and writing up their action research.

Like wading through quicksand 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a bear. It does contain all the requisite information but is a very dense read. The concepts are complex and elusive for the uninitiated so beware if you are a distance learner.

Editorial Review:

This accessible text offers an abundance of engaging examples and provides step-by-step instructions to illustrate common research methods and techniques, providing students and future administrators with a sound foundation in model building, research design, measurement, and sampling. The book's statistical section focuses on correct use and interpretation of commonly used statistics, including linear regression.

The book's overall aim is to develop effective, efficient research skills among future public administrators so that they will be better policy makers. It accomplishes this not only by providing a solid foundation in technique, but also by developing an awareness of the ethical issues associated with conducting research and reporting findings.

Winner, 2001 Lewis Mumford Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Technics sponsored by the Media Ecology Association (MEA). and Winner, 2001 Marshall McLuhan Award for Outstanding Book in the Field of Media Ecology, sponsored by the Media Ecology Assoication (MEA).

Media critics remain captivated by the modernist myth of the new: they assume that digital technologies such as the World Wide Web, virtual reality, and computer graphics must divorce themselves from earlier media for a new set of aesthetic and cultural principles. In this richly illustrated study, Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin offer a theory of mediation for our digital age that challenges this assumption. They argue that new visual media achieve their cultural significance precisely by paying homage to, rivaling, and refashioning such earlier media as perspective painting, photography, film, and television. They call this process of refashioning "remediation," and they note that earlier media have also refashioned one another: photography remediated painting, film remediated stage production and photography, and television remediated film, vaudeville, and radio.

The product came to me with the text in upside down and backwards. It is readable, but it is like the covers are on wrong. So if I want to read it I must flip it over and turn it upside down and the text reads correctly that way.

Excellent Resource for Conducting and Disseminating Education Research 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As educators we often desire to determine the status and effectiveness of a program, process, or intervention. To examine the results of a teaching strategy or intervention we need to research the activity in a manner that provides valid results. Improving Schools Through Action Research is an excellent guide for designing action research projects, conducting the research, and generating results of the research for publication or communication with others in the field.

The book is divided into easy to follow chapters with activities that guide the researcher through each phase of the research process. Relevant examples and Internet resources are provided throughout the book so novice researchers are comfortable with the process.

I highly recommend this textbook as a course text or as a reference for educators conducting action research to improve teaching and learning at their schools.

Editorial Review:

This text emphasizes the reflective processes used in planning and conducting action research studies, data analysis techniques (quantitative and qualitative), and displaying and explaining results. It provides specific information needed to complete each step of the action research cycle with chapter activities that help the student/reader conduct projects focused on school improvement. Each activity includes a research paper component that helps students create a research paper as they complete the activities.
