Editorial Review:

`In plain language but with very thorough detail, this book guides the researcher who really wants to use the NVivo software (and use it now) into their project. The way is lit with real-project examples, adorned with tricks and tips, but it’s a clear path to a project' -

Lyn Richards, Founder and Non-Executive Director, QSR International

Qualitative Data Analysis with NVivo is essential reading for anyone thinking of using their computer to help analyze qualitative data. With 15 years of experience in computer-assisted analysis of qualitative and mixed-mode data, Pat Bazeley is one of the leaders in the use and teaching of NVivo software.

Through this very practical book, readers are guided on how to make best use of the powerful and flexible tools offered by the latest version of NVivo as they work through each stage of their research projects. Explanations draw on examples from her own and others’ projects, and are supported by the methodological literature.

Researchers have different requirements and come to their data from different perspectives. This book shows how NVivo software can accommodate and assist analysis across those different perspectives and methodological approaches. It is required reading for both students and experienced researchers alike.

Excellent Resource for Conducting and Disseminating Education Research 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As educators we often desire to determine the status and effectiveness of a program, process, or intervention. To examine the results of a teaching strategy or intervention we need to research the activity in a manner that provides valid results. Improving Schools Through Action Research is an excellent guide for designing action research projects, conducting the research, and generating results of the research for publication or communication with others in the field.

The book is divided into easy to follow chapters with activities that guide the researcher through each phase of the research process. Relevant examples and Internet resources are provided throughout the book so novice researchers are comfortable with the process.

I highly recommend this textbook as a course text or as a reference for educators conducting action research to improve teaching and learning at their schools.

Editorial Review:

This text emphasizes the reflective processes used in planning and conducting action research studies, data analysis techniques (quantitative and qualitative), and displaying and explaining results. It provides specific information needed to complete each step of the action research cycle with chapter activities that help the student/reader conduct projects focused on school improvement. Each activity includes a research paper component that helps students create a research paper as they complete the activities.

Editorial Review:

Here, in the fourth edition of Statistics for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, the authors have refined their text by building off an already well-established approach - emphasizing the intuitive, deemphasizing the mathematical, and explaining everything in direct, simple language - but also going beyond these principles to both further student understanding and stimulate the long-suffering community of statistics instructors. By using definitional formulas to emphasize the concepts of statistics, rather than rote memorization, students work problems in a way that keeps them constantly aware of the underlying logic of what they are doing.

Editorial Review:

“Substantially rewritten from the previous editions, this Third Edition has the same clarity, the same balance between concepts and approaches, and the same illuminating examples. It is accessible to novices (and indeed to laypeople) and informative for those with more experience.”
-Bob Dick, Southern Cross University, Australia

Community-based action research seeks to involve as active participants those who have traditionally been called subjects and is intended to result in a practical outcome related to the lives or work of the participants. No matter the setting-organizational, institutional, or educational-there are particular skills needed to conduct action research successfully. In Action Research, author Ernest T. Stringer provides a series of tools that assist the researcher in working through the research process. The Third Edition of this popular text provides a simple but highly effective model for approaching action research: * Look: Building a picture and gathering information * Think: Interpreting and explaining * Act: Resolving issues and problems.

Key Features of the Third Edition:

  • Offers updated appendices and weblinks for access to cutting edge information on action research
  • Contains an extended discussion of action research literature review
  • Provides expanded case studies and examples
  • Includes more U.S. sources and materials
  • Clear, concise, and always pragmatic, Action Research, Third Edition is a must for the library of professionals and students involved in the research enterprise.

"From his clear description of the detailed and demanding work of collecting and analyzing data to the exploration of the broader historical and theoretical foundations of action research, Stringer provides an engaging and accessible introduction to students and community-based researchers. Using his own experience as a guide, Stringer’s style is personable and inviting, but at the same time he calls upon aspiring action researchers to grapple with the broader political and ethical challenges that frame our inquiry and the daily personal and professional demands of engaged social inquiry. He convinces us that we, too, want to do action research, and then shows how to do it!"

    -Mary Brydon-Miller, University of Cincinnati

"This is a very good introductory volume that can spark ideas, discussions, and (self-) reflection on how to better link theory and practice."

Like wading through quicksand 2 out of 5 stars.

This book is a bear. It does contain all the requisite information but is a very dense read. The concepts are complex and elusive for the uninitiated so beware if you are a distance learner.

    Editorial Review:

This accessible text offers an abundance of engaging examples and provides step-by-step instructions to illustrate common research methods and techniques, providing students and future administrators with a sound foundation in model building, research design, measurement, and sampling. The book's statistical section focuses on correct use and interpretation of commonly used statistics, including linear regression.

The book's overall aim is to develop effective, efficient research skills among future public administrators so that they will be better policy makers. It accomplishes this not only by providing a solid foundation in technique, but also by developing an awareness of the ethical issues associated with conducting research and reporting findings.

    Editorial Review:

This book offers the most comprehensive coverage of qualitative techniques of any book on the market today and does it in a way that is easy to read and follow. The author's central purpose remains a desire to instruct inexperienced researchers in ways of effectively collecting, organizing, and making sense of qualitative data, while stressing the importance of ethics in research and in taking the time to properly design and think through any research endeavor. After reading this book, fledgling researchers should be able to design, collect, and analyze data and then present their results to the scientific community. Considers seven different data collection strategies in detail. Describes focus group interviewing, one of the fastest growing styles of data collection, in detail (Ch. 5), including a new Moderator's Guide that provides the inexperienced focus group facilitator with a step-by-step guide to how the interview should be conducted. Maintains the emphasis on ethics in research (Ch. 3) including a new section on the President's apology for the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. For anyone in the social sciences who needs to develop research methodology.

Helpful and Thorough 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had to buy this book for a sociology class, and I'm glad I did. The book is easy to read and covers many topics related to research, focusing on qualitative but noting quantitative as well. This would be a great read to learn how to get started doing qualitative research.

Becoming Qualitative Researchers 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a teacher of qualitative research methods to doctoral students, I highly recommend this book. It is easy to read and gives students a broader understanding of qualitative approaches to research than books that focus specifically on one or more methods. I also appreciate the attention given to the impact of postmodernism in the field. I am an instructor who typically favors articles and chapters over textbooks, but I find this one to be a very solid foundation for the course.

    Editorial Review:

As educators and social researchers have become more familiar with the promise of qualitative inquiry, so do students need a strong foundation of qualitative research methods. Offering a comprehensive overview of qualitative research in a user-friendly format, this text provides an excellent harmony between qualitative theory and the practicalities of actually conducting qualitative research. Exercises offer beginning students the opportunity to explore issues inherent in conducting qualitative inquiry as well as to practice and refine the skills of qualitative researchers. The wealth of examples and exercises in the text is exceptional, as is the writing style.

    Editorial Review:

The First Edition of InterViews has provided students and professionals in a wide variety of disciplines with the “whys” and “hows” of research interviewing, preparing students for learning interviewing by doing interviews and by studying examples of best practice. The thoroughly revised Second Edition retains its original seven-stage structure, continuing to focus on the practical, epistemological, and ethical issues involved with interviewing. Authors Steinar Kvale and Svend Brinkmann also include coverage of newer developments in qualitative interviewing, discussion of interviewing as a craft, and a new chapter on linguistic modes of interview analysis. Practical and conceptual assignments, as well as new “tool boxes,” provide students with the means to dig deeper into the material presented and achieve a more meaningful level of understanding.

    New to This Edition

    · Includes new developments in qualitative interviewing: New materials cover narrative, discursive, and conversational analyses.

    · Presents interviewing as a social practice: Knowledge produced by interviewing is discussed as linguistic, conversational, narrative, relational, situated, and pragmatic.

    · Addresses a variety of interviews forms: In addition to harmonious, empathetic interviews, the authors also cover confrontational interviews.

    Intended Audience

This text is ideal for both novice and experienced interview researchers as well as graduate students taking courses in qualitative and research methods in the social sciences and health sciences, particularly departments of Education, Nursing, Sociology, Psychology, and Communication.

    Praise for the previous edition:

“I think this is one of the most in-depth treatments of the interview process that I have seen. The frank and realistic approach that the authors take to this topic is rather unique and will be very reassuring to researchers who are undertaking an interview study for the first time.”
