Marxist propaganda 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Can anyone still be preaching Karl Marx in the 21st Century? Richard T. Schaefer can. Thanks to Mr. Schaefer, I now know that as a white male I must get up every morning and ask myself, "whom can I oppress and exploit today? Let's see, how about some poor female or someone of an ethnic minority?" I found it offensive all the way through and told my professor that I was offended that she chose this textbook. Mr. Schaefer pretends that he's writing a sociology textbook, but the book is basically Marxist propaganda. Schaefer presents the three basic approaches to sociology, but he cannot hide his Marxist bias, which colors everything in the entire book. (I would also like to add that the readers on the audio CD are incredibly pretentious and have some strange ideas about the pronunciation of the English language, i.e., the word "united" is accented on the first syllable.) The only thing useful that I got out of this book was that an idea I thought was my own had actually been hatched by Erving Goffman fifty years ago. (I plan to read something by Goffman now.) I would strongly advise educators against using this textbook. There are surely others that are not propaganda.

Editorial Review:

Three basic premises guide this highly successful introductory text--first that theory and research must be both comprehensive and clear, second that the text must show how the discipline is relevant both to the study of society and to students' lives and last, that it must stress critical thinking skills. Sociology: A Brief Introduction does all three in a concise presentation that offers an alternative to full length books. All major theoretical perspectives and research methods are consistently represented in this thorough, readable presentation. The text takes a distinctive social policy emphasis that underscores the usefulness of sociological theory and research in understanding and resolving the issues facing the modern world.

Editorial Review:

How do you top what is said to be the greatest selling fundraising book of all time?

How do you improve upon Mega Gifts, a book CASE Currents magazine called 'the most important fundraising book' written?

How do you, as Emeril Lagasse would say, 'kick it up a notch?"

Jerold Panas knows how.

You update the content, revise it, add more chapters, introduce a rash of new donors, and look afresh at what's happened over the past two decades. What you end up with is an even better book, if that's possible.

The Second Edition of Mega Gifts: Who Gives Them, Who Gets Them is no 'how-to' book. Panas would wince at that depiction. No, Mega Gifts it is far more substantive and significant than that.

What Panas is after is nothing less than exposing the soul of those who make large gifts. And in his own inimitable style, he goes right to the source, the big givers themselves, and speaks at length with dozens of them.

Then, to corroborate what he learns, Panas surveys nearly a thousand professionals in the field and incorporates their insights as well.

The result is a tour de force book from an unrivalled storyteller, with insights dancing off every page. In fact, there's so much inside information, you'll feel you're reading someone else's mail.

What you find in Mega Gifts is the real deal, from the primary source. This isn't conjecture.

And what you gain is an understanding of donors' innermost motivations, what drives them to the causes they support, how they reach their decision, what nurtures their loyalty, what they expect from organizations and their staff, how they wish to be recognized - even how they want you to approach them and present your case.

And then there are the Tenets for Success. From his depth interviews, from his survey to field professionals, and from his own close association with mega givers over the past several decades, Panas has distilled down 62 tenets that guide, shape, and determine the success of securing major gifts. Each and every one should be tacked on the wall.

Mega Gifts is the 800 pound gorilla in the field … and one hugely entertaining animal it is.

A practical, inspirational, revolutionary guide to social innovation

Many of us have a deep desire to make the world around us a better place. But often our good intentions are undermined by the fear that we are so insignificant in the big scheme of things that nothing we can do will actually help feed the world’s hungry, fix the damage of a Hurricane Katrina or even get a healthy lunch program up and running in the local school. We tend to think that great social change is the province of heroes – an intimidating view of reality that keeps ordinary people on the couch. But extraordinary leaders such as Gandhi and even unlikely social activists such as Bob Geldof most often see themselves as harnessing the forces around them, rather than singlehandedly setting those forces in motion. The trick in any great social project – from the global fight against AIDS to working to eradicate poverty in a single Canadian city – is to stop looking at the discrete elements and start trying to understand the complex relationships between them. By studying fascinating real-life examples of social change through this systems-and-relationships lens, the authors of Getting to Maybe tease out the rules of engagement between volunteers, leaders, organizations and circumstance – between individuals and what Shakespeare called “the tide in the affairs of men.”

Getting to Maybe applies the insights of complexity theory and harvests the experiences of a wide range of people and organizations – including the ministers behind the Boston Miracle (and its aftermath); the Grameen Bank, in which one man’s dream of micro-credit sparked a financial revolution for the world’s poor; the efforts of a Canadian clothing designer to help transform the lives of aboriginal women and children; and many more – to lay out a brand new way of thinking about making change in communities, in business, and in the world.

Editorial Review:

Since it was first published in 1988, Fundraising for Social Change has become one of the most widely used books on fundraising in the United States. Fundraising practitioners and activists rely on it for hands-on, specific, and accessible fundraising techniques, and it has become a required text in dozens of college courses around the country. This fifth edition offers the information that has made the book a classic: proven know-how on asking for money, planning and conducting major gifts campaigns, using direct mail effectively, and much more. The book has been significantly changed to include new technology—e-mail, online giving, and blogs—and contains expanded chapters on capital and endowment campaigns, how to feel comfortable asking for money, how to recruit a team of people to help with fundraising, and how to build meaningful relationships with donors. In addition, this essential resource contains new information on such timely topics as ethics, working across cultural lines, and how to create opportunities for fundraising more systematically and strategically.

Editorial Review:

In the spirit of A Child Called "It" comes an amazing story of resilience from a woman who triumphed over child abuse, cancer, and alcoholism to founder of A Place Called Home.

"I began life, it would seem, as some kind of Grimm's fairy tale creature, large and oafish, undesirable, grossly imperfect. Neatly penned in my baby book were the words, 'Debbie was a fat, unattractive baby.' Fat and ugly aside, my life was fairly normal for a couple of years. It would be a while before the abuse began. Before the smoking and pills, the rage and rebellion, the alcoholism and cancer, the broken marriages.

In those first uncomplicated years I could have set out on any of a dozen different paths toward an orderly life . . . it was not to be. . . . But this is not a story of defeat."

This is a book about surviving. It's about hope. It's about how each of us-ordinary, imperfect, damaged-can dream and heal. This book weaves the humorous, often outrageous, always courageous tapestry of Debrah Constance's life. Voted Woman of the Year by the State of California Legislature for founding A Place Called Home, (APCH) an organization providing services to at-risk inner-city kids in South Los Angeles, she proves that anyone can rise above life's obstacles and make a better life for themselves-and others.

Want to read inspirational stories on how to live a life that matters?

Buy a copy of this book for you, your friends and employees. One way to counteract troubled times is to focus on all that's right with the world -- and one way to do that is to read about these individuals and organizations who are committed to serving those less fortunate.

As author Maurice Sendak says, "There must be more to life than having everything." The dozens of contributors to this book -- including top executives from AARP, Make-A-Wish Foundation, American Red Cross and Dreams for Kids -- prove that.

You'll be moved to tears -- and moved to action -- after reading about these extraordinary people who are, as contributor Casey Golden says, "making a difference, one small act at a time."

Most importantly, you'll be motivated to figure out how YOU can give while you live so that everyone benefits, including you.

Editorial Review:

Do Your Giving While You Are Living is an illuminating little book with a very big--and very timely--message. It inspires readers to embrace giving and to understand that the highest purpose in life is quite simple: doing for others. Featuring contributions from some of the most influential and philanthropic people and organizations in the world today, this book shows readers how the act of giving can change the world and also change their own lives in ways they never thought possible.

Do Your Giving While You Are Living offers food for thought in bite-sized bits. Each entry includes a quote, a brief first-person story of how one of the book's contributors--from leading-edge thinkers to hometown heroes--made a difference, and an action step readers can put to use in their lives. The vignettes are as moving as they are enlightening, teaching readers the power of giving and demonstrating specific ways how that power can be put into action, no matter what age or station in life.

Excellent Habitat Primer 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Very well-written synopsis of Habitat for Humanity with powerful Biblical tie-ins to Habitat's work. Would be particularly useful for a faith community class, e.g., Sunday School class.

Editorial Review:

Intended primarily for use in congregations and by general readers who are interested in the issue of affordable housing and homelessness, Reckford tells the story of how Habitat has touched the lives of people around the world and is transforming not only those receiving housing but those who participate as builders.

The final chapter helps individuals and groups take a "justice, mercy, and humility" self-check and lays out a list of action suggestions. Includes an online small group Leader's Guide and participant Study Guide.

Editorial Review:

Can a man be content with a piece of bread and some change tossed his way from a passerby?

Today's modern welfare state expects he can. Those who control the money in our society think that giving a dollar at the train station and then appropriating a billion dollars for federal housing can cure the ails of the homeless and the poor.

But the crisis of the modern welfare state is more than a crisis of government. Private charities that dispense aid indiscriminately while ignoring the moral and spiritual needs of the poor are also to blame. Like animals in the zoo at feeding time, the needy are given a plate of food but rarely receive the love and time that only a person can give.

Poverty fighters 100 years ago were more compassionate--in the literal meaning of "suffering with"--than many of us are now. They opened their own homes to deserted women and children. They offered employment to nomadic men who had abandoned hope and human contact. Most significantly, they made moral demands on recipients of aid. They saw family, work, freedom, and faith as central to our being, not as life-style options. No one was allowed to eat and run.

Some kind of honest labor was required of those who needed food or a place to sleep in return. Woodyards next to homeless shelters were as common in the 1890s as liquor stores are in the 1990s. When an able bodied woman sought relief, she was given a seat in the "sewing room" and asked to work on garments given to the helpless poor.

To begin where poverty fighters a century ago began, Marvin Olasky emphasizes seven ideas that recent welfare practice has put aside: affiliation, bonding, categorization, discernment, employment, freedom, and most importantly, belief in God. In the end, not much will be accomplished without a spiritual revival that transforms the everyday advice we give and receive, and the way we lead our lives.

It's time we realized that there is only so much that public policy can do. That only a richness of spirit can battle a poverty of soul. The century-old question--does any given scheme of help... make great demands on men to give themselves to their brethren?--is still the right one to ask. Most of our 20th-century schemes have failed. It's time to learn from the warm hearts and hard heads of the 19th-century.

"We are indebted to Olasky for bringing past lessons of history to bear on a present cultural crisis. Another great work by one of today's foremost thinkers." --Charles W. Colson, Chairman, Prison Fellowship

"A comprehensive, well documented, and much needed study of the decline of true compassion that provides fresh analysis and provocative insight into the causes and cures of this American tragedy. Must reading for people who want to understand and help correct the plight of hurting people." --Dr. Anthony T. Evans, President, The Urban Alternative

"Those who read and understand Olasky's work will be better prepared to move creatively in affirming the dignity of the poor, and in affirming work as a virtue." --John Perkins, Publisher, Urban Family magazine

"Marvin Olasky's perceptive book shows how we, as individuals and in community with one another, can best demonstrate the genuine compassion that the poor need most of all." --Doug Bandow, Senior Fellow, Cato Institute

"Finally someone has put the horse and the cart in the right order. Marvin Olasky neither shuns compassion nor assistance for the poor, but rather gives the historical definition of each and assigns them their proper priority. Not only can this book benefit the truly needy, it can benefit the country. Not a bad accomplishment for one book." --Cal Thomas, Los Angeles Times Syndicate

"Masterly on the way philanthropy works." -The New York ObserverFor more than a century, the United States has stood as a beacon of prosperity and democracy, proof that big business and big dreams could flourish side by side. Yet few Americans realize the crucial role that generosity plays in keeping that fragile balance. A leading voice for community development, scholar and former Connecticut College president Claire Gaudiani examines the crucial role of philanthropy in American prosperity. She traces the entrepreuneurial spirit of altruism, finding that generous gifts have powerfully invested in the most critical ingredients of the American economy: people, property, and ingenuity. Rather than pitting the capitalists against the populists, Gaudiani draws a blueprint for a just future, full of opportunities, based on giving. The Greater Good is a passionate, pragmatic, and optimistic manifesto for revitalizing the promise of the American economy.

Reviewed by April Sullivan for Reader Views (2/08)

"A Walk for Sunshine" is a non-fiction account of Jeff Alt's thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in Spring 1998. The Appalachian Trail, also known as the AT, is a 2,160-mile trail through forests, meadows, mountains, and streams from Georgia to Maine. Hiking from one end to the other straight through takes 3-6 months. Jeff Alt did his walk in 147 days. He did this hike not only for himself, but also as a fundraiser for Sunshine, Inc., a group home for people with disabilities, where his brother lives.

The purpose of this book was for Jeff to tell the story of his hike and how he organized it as a fundraiser. Jeff kept journals throughout the trip and mailed them back home. He did an amazing job of compiling these journals into this book. It was written in an easy-to-read style with short chapters. I felt like I was walking the trail with Jeff. In 3-4 pages we had walked 15-20 miles. His fun storytelling and friendly, easy style made me think. Maybe I could really do this too.

Jeff stresses the importance of family and friends as the inspiration and motivation throughout his journey. Jeff did his hike for Sunshine, Inc., a group home where his brother lives with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities. Sunshine organized a short accessible day hike to correspond with Jeff's hike. They sent cards and letters to him on a regular basis. His family arranged to meet him at various points on the hike. Jeff made it clear that he could not have finished this hike without them.

The unwritten motto on the trail is "Hike your own hike." Jeff takes that motto one step further in this book. He extends it beyond the trail. Anyone can reach their goals by taking it one step at a time and doing it their own way and from their own inspiration. A Post Script in the book talks about how to organize a charity fundraiser and life lessons Jeff learned from the trail.

This book really inspired me. As someone who has always wanted to walk the Appalachian Trail, I was so excited to read each page and really soak in what the reality of a three-month hike would take. Jeff makes the point that people need to take the time now to reach our goals--not to wait for retirement or when we have more time. Take the time to make our lives what we want. I recommend "A Walk for Sunshine" to anyone interested in reading an inspiring book about reaching goals.

Editorial Review:

An entertaining, humorous, and inspiring walk along the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail, a journey dedicated to Jeff Alt's brother who has cerebral palsy. Alt's adventure inspired an annual fundraiser which has raised over 100,000 dollars for the disabled home in which his brother resides. Experience wild animals, interesting people, breathtaking scenery, rough weather, and the success of achieving big goals.
