Well-researched and nicely executed 5 out of 5 stars.

Like many in the Jossey Bass series, Tempel's work is thorough and well-written, covering all important aspects of fundraising. A great introductory guide.

A nice introductory tome regarding fundraising in the nonprofit sector in America. 1 thumb up! 4 out of 5 stars.

I liked this book. It provided me with my introduction to the nonprofit world and fundraising for nonprofits back in 2004. It's not written by one person. And as a result, it is not tightly written. In fact, I think there are 27 different contributors to this book. Maybe I counted wrong? But this book is an excellent introduction to the ins and outs of fundraising in America as we know it today. It has 7 chapters:

1. Fundraising: Context and philosophy
2. Fundamentals of successful fundraising
3. Building blocks for successful fundraising
4. Sources of fundraising
5. Successful fundraising methods
6. Managing successful fundraising
7. Ethics, stewardship, and the future of the fundraising profession

I have read other books written by the following contributors to this book: Mal Warwick, Kim Klein, Kay Grace, and James Greenfield. And I've met and listened to Ted Hart who runs the nonprofit ePhilanthropy Foundation. I have gotten things from reading or listening to all these people. And my favorite fundraising book of all was written by Ms. Grace: Beyond Fundraising (ISBN: 0471707139). Kim Klein's "Fundraising for Social Change" (ISBN: 0787984558) comes in a close second.

What I liked the most about this book was the quality of writing and the breadth of coverage. It talks about annual giving programs, captial campaigns, endowment campaigns, and planned giving. It also covers ethics that fundraisers should adhere to. There is a lot to the art and science of raising funds for nonprofits. And this book seems to touch on much of it.

Don't expect to learn the specifics of how to do "an ask" in a major gift setting. Don't expect to be told how to manage a successful capital campaign, or to adeptly use the Internet as a fundraising tool. And I was happy there wasn't much if any coverage of grants and grant writing. Phew! But this book covers enough about everything that you can intelligently search out other books to supplement your read of this book. 4 stars!

A Good Look at Problems on the Inside of Aid 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book has its flaws. As other reviewers have noted, it is rambling and disjointed. While I believe that his facts are mostly right, there are points where he may have come to the wrong conclusion because of a lack of familiarity with aid processes. Certainly, he over-generalizes based on anecdotal evidence. Aid in Somalia is probably not exactly the same thing as aid in Chile. The existence of some venal people in an organization does not mean that everyone in an organization is venal.

Maren is too quick to dismiss people as acting only in their own self-interest, even to the point of being internally inconsistent. He spends a lot of time passing out blame, and not always where it belongs. While he is pretty sure that NGOs should be blamed for carrying out bad projects, he doesn't seem to realize that they are under contract with USAID. USAID can terminate projects unilaterally; NGO sub-contractors can't, both legally and practically. On the one hand, he steams about patronizing attitudes towards Africans, and, on the other hand, says that it was "not their fault" that recipients stole aid funds in massive amounts, but the fault of those who made aid available to them. (What could be more patronizing than assuming that adults can't be held responsible for their own behavior?) Does the fact that aid workers have to convince Congress to give them funding by pointing out the advantages to the U.S. and legislators' constituents really mean that the aid workers were never serious about their humanitarian goals?

The fact that it sometimes reads more like angry blurting than balanced or reasoned scholarship is a shame, because there is a lot of good material here and good points being made. But it is important to read, particularly now, where there is renewed clamoring for more funds for aid to meet the Millennium Development Goals. Maren clearly, accessibly and authoritatively explains why more money does not equal more development; worse, can be destructive. These points are made elsewhere by others, but are usually buried in dry academic papers that speak in euphemisms. Anyone who wants to work in development should read this book. Maren can be forgiven for being angry.

All across the globe, companies large and small are making a tremendous difference in the lives of others and, in turn, are enhancing employee performance, boosting morale, lowering turnover, and heightening brand recognition. In The Business of Changing the World, Marc Benioff and 19 other leaders share their corporate philanthropy secrets for the first time, revealing how any company can start their own program and reap enormous benefits.

This inspiring collection of testimonies brings to light the need for community giving, the challenges of implementing a philanthropic initiative, and the qualities CEOs must possess in order to make their programs a success. Most important, it highlights the tremendous rewards society and businesses stand to earn.

These are just a few of the extraordinary leaders you'll hear from:

  • Alan Hassenfeld, the chairman of Hasbro-a pioneer of the integrated corporation-shares why he believes he owes a “debt” to the children of the world and how Hasbro expanded its reach beyond the playroom

Very helpful 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book! The Seven Faces of Philanthropy offers a very helpful donor-centered approach to interacting with donors.

Although thoroughly researched, the authors' humility is also refreshing. Prince and File specifically say they are not offering a framework that supplements, not replaces, the strategies and techniques our offices are using. Later, they acknowledge the limits and constraints with this framework but affirm that the strength is in the process.

Throughout the book, actual comments from donors illustrate the points the authors are making. I could almost hear donors I know talking to us through those quotations! As I read The Seven Faces of Philanthropy, I found myself scribbling notes in the margins about how I could implement the framework in my daily work.

I was disappointed that this reprint merely had a new introduction. Part Two is laden with statistics and I found myself wondering how they have changed in the last ten years. Nevertheless, this book is well worth reading and implementing.

In addition to a preface, two introductions, and a research appendix, the chapters include:

Part One: Profiling the Seven Faces of Philanthropy
1. The Communitarian: Doing Good Makes Sense
2. The Devout: Doing Good is God's Will
3. The Investor: Doing Good is Good Business
4. The Socialite: Doing Good is Fun
5. The Altruist: Doing Good Feels Right
6. The Repayer: Doing Good in Return
7. The Dynast: Doing Good is a Family Tradition

Part Two: Cultivating Major Donors with the Seven Faces Framework
8. Making Connections Through Charity Networks
9. Building Relationships with the Seven Philanthropic Personalities
10. Identifying Appropriate Giving Strategies
11. Sustaining Relationships Through Donor Centered Strategies

Conclusion: Applying the Seven Faces Framework

Editorial Review:

Available for the first time in paperback, Seven Faces of Philanthropy introduces to you the Seven Faces approach--a powerful tool that enables development professionals to maximize their effectiveness when approaching major donors for gifts. The authors identify and profile seven types of major donors and offer you detailed strategies on how to approach them. Both novice and expert fundraisers will find this framework a valuable supplement to existing strategies and techniques.

A Must for Anyone Working with Volunteers! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is enlightening, useful, and easy to read. The authors have distilled a lot of information about Boomers and make it clear and relevant. The process they lay out for engaging volunteers in new ways will really help my school/organization. The exercises are useful and have inspired me to engage my faculty and parent volunteers in new, collaborative ways.

Rural or Metro, every volunteer program should have this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Our small rural volunteer program was facing a huge issue: Rejuvenate or Die. By using this book, and putting theory into practice, we are now experiencing growth in new programming, volunteer recruitment and community buy-in. Our collaborative efforts are bearing great fruit and we are becoming the "re-newed" thriving hub for volunteers in all of our service area and beyond.

This book is worth its weight in gold.

A Must Read for Everyone Who Works With Volunteers! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book really represents a much needed cultural shift away from the "volunteer management" style of working with volunteers to a process that engages volunteers in every aspect of their experience. It has made a tremendous difference in the way I work with all volunteers, not only Boomer age volunteers. It is a sensical approach that has so much validity in the non profit world. I highly recommend it.

A true pioneer of social reform! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

In 1911 Addams helped found the National Foundation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers, and she was its first president. She was also a leader in women's suffrage and pacifist movements. In 1915 she helped found the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She received the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize (shared with American educator Nicholas Murray Butler).

The Hull House could boast a group of about 2,000 people a week. It had facilities including: a night school for adults, kindergarten classes, clubs for older children, a public kitchen, an art gallery, a coffeehouse, a gymnasium, a girls club, a swimming pool, a book bindery, a music school, a drama group, a library, and labor related divisions.

The Hull House also served as a women's institution of sociology and Addams was a friend and colleague to the early men of the Chicago School of Sociology influencing their social thought of the time through her work in applied sociology, which became defined as social work by academic sociologists of the time. Addams did not, however, consider herself a social worker. She co-authored the Hull-House Maps and Papers in 1893 that came to define the interests and methodologies of Chicago Sociology. She worked with George H. Mead on social reform issues including women's rights and the 1910 Garment Workers' Strike. Addams combined the central concepts of symbolic interactionism with the theories of cultural feminism and pragmatism to form her sociological ideas.

Editorial Review:

This is the first annotated edition of Jane Addams's superb autobiography. "An indispensable classic of American intellectual and social history." - Berenice A. Carroll, editor of "Liberating Women's History: Theoretical and Critical Essays". "After twenty years of relative obscurity, the early-twentieth-century social crusader and author of "Twenty Years at Hull-House" is once again in the spotlight." - Arianne Chernock, Lingua Franca. "The classic account of the development of Hull-House into a vibrant community center for Chicago's immigrants and poor. Addams' memoir is central to understanding the aims and mood of the progressive era." - "The Front Table."

Editorial Review:

Timely and controversial, A Bed for the Night reveals how humanitarian organizations are often betrayed and misused, and have increasingly lost sight of their purpose. Drawing on firsthand reporting from war zones around the world, David Rieff shows us what aid workers do in the field and the growing gap between their noble ambitions and their actual capabilities for alleviating suffering. He describes how many humanitarian organizations have moved from their founding principle of neutrality, which gave them access to victims, to encouraging the international community to take action to stop civil wars and ethnic cleansing. By calling for intervention, humanitarian organizations risk being seen as taking sides in a conflict and thus jeopardizing their access to victims. And by overreaching, the humanitarian movement has allowed itself to be hijacked by the major powers. Rieff concludes that if humanitarian organizations are to do what they do best -- alleviate suffering -- they must reclaim their independence.

Must Have if considering your own foundation 4 out of 5 stars.
35 of 35 people found this review helpful.

This book comes with a hefty price - I was hesitant. If you are considering the establishment of your own private foundation, this book is a must. It is fairly heavy with the legaleze, but required when considering the thorough discussions of establishing and maintaining a foundation with respect to the applicable IRS tax code. Each topic is documented and sample tax forms are illustrated. Highly recommended - needs to be a little more user friendly for the 5th star.

Editorial Review:

Private foundations are a special niche of the nonprofit sector. They are allowed to remain relatively tax-exempt in exchange for supporting charitable activities. There are more than 50,000–and growing–private foundations in the United States holding assets worth more than $230 billion. Private foundations are subject to a unique and complex set of (mostly tax) regulations that govern everything from how much money they give away to their investment policies and procedures. This much needed, annually updated manual explicates a wide range of tax rules and regulations for these foundations and prepares them for the increasing scrutiny of the IRS. Co-authored by a lawyer and tax accountant, the revised and expanded second edition of this highly respected guide includes practical tax compliance suggestions and in-depth legal explanations, line-by-line instructions, sample-filled IRS forms, and complete citations.
