Editorial Review:

When the stewardess brought me off the plane in a wheelchair, I lowered my head. I was too scared to even look at my father. I didn't want to see the disappointment and horror on his face. All that hate I had accumulated for him over the years, all the resentment against him for not understanding what I was going through, just released with the tears.

"So, where are your parents?" the stewardess asked me after a few minutes. "I can't wait here with you much longer."

I looked up and wiped my eyes. My father was standing ten feet away. He didn't even recognize me.

In the underbelly of Las Vegas, a cesspool of warring biker gangs and seedy strip clubs transformed the gawky, brace-faced Jenna Massoli into the bombshell Jenna Jameson. Today, Jenna Jameson is the biggest star in the history of adult movies, consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful women alive. But behind the glamour and the meteoric rise to fame was a path paved with tragedy and heartbreak. As a teenager drawn into a chaotic world ruled by rape, abuse, and murder, Jenna plunged into a downward spiral of addiction, even as she became one of the most photographed women in adult magazines.

Determined to overcome this past, Jenna rebounded in the adult-film business, where she encountered sadistic directors, experienced lovers of both sexes, amorous celebrities (from Howard Stern to Marilyn Manson to Tommy Lee), bitter rival starlets, and finally, glory, as she went on to become the biggest porn star the world has ever seen. But her struggle for happiness did not end when the accolades began. For years she wrestled with her resentment at her estranged father, the loneliness of growing up from the age of two without a mother, and her enduring childhood desire to find a man who could give her the security and love she never had.

Her unforgettable memoir is many things at once: a shocking sexual history, an insider's guide to the secret workings of the billion-dollar adult-film industry, and a gripping thriller that probes deep into Jenna's dark past. An unparalleled exploration of sexual freedom, How to Make Love Like a Porn Star ventures far beyond the flesh, into the heart-shredding tragedies and adrenaline-pumping triumphs of a woman who has already lived a hundred lifetimes. Always witty and humorous even as she faces the demons of her past, Jenna offers hilarious anecdotes about one of the most controversial businesses in history, and shares outrageous advice, including her ten commandments of dating and sex, how to become a "suitcase pimp," and how to make it in the business as a female (or a male).

Add to this never-before-seen photographs from Jenna's private collection and others taken exclusively for this book, and the result is certain to be one of the most talked-about books of the year.

life-changing book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I was one of those men you talk about who'd spend so much time and energy worrying about whether the other person found me funny or pretty or would want to see more of me that I hardly bothered thinking about whether I truly genuinely found THEM attractive. Yes, my priorities needed to be realigned, because the only girls who wanted to be with such a people-pleaser were the ones who took advantage of my being so giving. You're spot-on when you say the only person you can do anything about is yourself. And now this man is going to start paying attention to those signals you talk about rather than on what I'm doing 'right' or 'wrong'. It really opened up my eyes to what I was doing to myself.

Here's How to Approach, Meet, Attract and Seduce the Woman of Your Dreams 5 out of 5 stars.

You have no idea how shy and unconfident I used to be around women. I really was scared to approach women and didn't know what to say, or how to control that feeling in side me that just kept on panicking whenever I liked someone.

You only live once and it is great to have that area of my life sorted now. After dating some truly hot women, I have met someone who I like a lot, we've been going out for over a month now and I don't believe this would have happened without the help of this book help!

Editorial Review:

From the popular Bratz dolls to the infamous photos from Abu Ghraib, The Porning of America reveals that porn has become the mainstream—and the mainstream has become porn. Carmine Sarracino and Kevin Scott argue that porn has seeped into and been absorbed by every defining aspect of our culture: language, entertainment, fashion, advertising, sexual behavior, even politics. Cultural absorption is so complete that we no longer have to purchase pornography to get porn because we increasingly live porn on a daily basis.

In tracing porn's transformation—from the Civil War to the golden age of comic books in the 1940s and 1950s to the adult film industry's golden decade of the 1970s and up to today—the authors illustrate that what began in the dark alleys of American life has now emerged as an unapologetic multibillion-dollar industry. In this astonishingly comprehensive book, Sarracino and Scott profile such "porn exemplars"—those who have been pivotal to the mainstreaming of porn—as Russ Meyer, Snoop Dogg, Jenna Jameson, and Paris Hilton; they document how mainstream advertising uses porn culture to sell commercial goods now to an even younger, "tween" audience; and they pose crucial questions: How has porn shaped the way we view our own and others' bodies? Sarracino and Scott examine porned advertising of everything from Clinique to Orbit gum to Old Spice. How has porn influenced our relationships and how do current sexual behaviors, such as the "hookup," mimic porn? The authors look to MySpace and Craigslist for answers. And how does porn shape our identity, as individuals and as a nation? Sarracino and Scott argue that the mistreatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib exposed our porned sensibilities.

Not an anti-porn diatribe, The Porning of America is resolutely pro-sex. Sarracino and Scott contend that, to make the most of our hard-won sexual freedom, we must thoughtfully—and honestly—evaluate what might be liberating about porn as well as what might be damaging. Nuanced, timely, and urgent, The Porning of America will change how you see the world around you.

"This fascinating, provocative book had me glued and makes a great crack at unraveling the mysteries of today's pornography. If you're questioning how to think through the vast array of porn that is now available, The Porning of America has great information and fresh insights that will enhance any debate. I've been involved in the sex industry for over three decades, and yet I learned a great deal from Sarracino and Scott's current research."
—Annie Sprinkle, Ph.D., porn star turned sexologist

"Whether it's the sexualization of girls, a pimp lifestyle, or Abu Ghraib, there's no dismissing the influence of pornography . . . In this smart, provocative book Sarracino and Scott tease apart the dark, debasing forms of pornography—that 'cultural toxic waste' polluting the social body—from the sensual, pleasurable part of us that yearns for expression. This brave, nuanced book tells a story we don't want to know but can't, for the life of us, ignore."
—Lyn Mikel Brown, founder of Hardy Girls Healthy Women and coauthor of Packaging Girlhood

"As someone whose business has been pornography for decades, I'm thrilled with The Porning of America. Sarracino and Scott show a real understanding of the development of porn, and make a convincing argument that porn has become mainstream—and that the mainstream has become porn. Comprehensive and thought-provoking, this is a must read if you want to understand porn and our culture."
—Al Goldstein, founder and former publisher of Screw magazine and Midnight Blue

"Sarracino and Scott—dads first, professors second—open our eyes to the porning of America. Readers are given the history, the politics, and the psychology of porn today. With straight-talk but nuanced arguments, the authors take us on a fascinating and sometimes alarming ride through comic books, pop culture, the Internet, soft-core porn, and on beyond XXX. This is simply required reading for anyone interested in girls' and boys' development and for all of us who care about promoting a sexual ethic of mutuality and care."
—Sharon Lamb, professor, psychologist, and coauthor of The APA Task Force Report on the Sexualization of Girls

"This bold book is both pro-sex and pro-feminist. A critical and comprehensive examination of the misogyny and racism that are alive and well in porn and mainstream society, it nevertheless manages to celebrate sexuality."
—Jessica Valenti, author of Full-Frontal Feminism

Editorial Review:

In our culture, porn makes the man. So argues Robert Jensen in Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity. Jensen's treatise begins with a simple demand: "Be a man." It ends with a defiant response: "I chose to struggle to be a human being." The journey from masculinity to humanity is found in the candid and intelligent exploration of porn's devastating role in defining masculinity.

Getting Off seamlessly blends personal anecdotes from Jensen's years as a feminist anti-pornography activist with scholarly research. In his trademark conversational style, he shows how mainstream pornography reinforces social definitions of manhood and influences men's attitudes about women and how to treat them.

Pornography is a thriving multi-billion-dollar industry; it drives the direction of emerging media technology. Pornography also makes for complicated politics. These days, anti-porn arguments are assumed to be "anti-sex" and thus a critical debate is silenced. This book breaks that silence. Alarming and thought-provoking, Getting Off asks tough, but crucial, questions about pornography, sex, manhood, and the way toward genuine social justice.

Robert Jensen is an associate professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege and Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity.

Flawless 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a straight, married woman.

I am certainly not the target audience for this book.
But I am here to tell you that this was by far the most enjoyable
reading experience I have had in at least ten years.

If you are about to buy Augusten Bourroughs, David Sedaris, or John Updike, promise me you will at least buy Blue Blake's book at the same time. He takes a page from all of those writers--revealing, hysterical, and brilliantly sophisticated (which come to think of it are probably adjectives that describe the author himself) but makes it entirely his own. You will never laugh so hard.

What surprises most about this book, however, is how inspiring it is. Every time I picked it up, I would scream in delight at my husband that he HAD to read it. Obviously my joy was stemming from the raucous, delicious humor throughout the story. But more important, Out of the Blue is a tale of survival and hope, tenacity and raw ambition, and drives home the idea that following your dreams really is possible, making life-long friends all over the world along the way. In fact, this is the quintessential American Dream story. (Sorry, Mrs. Palin)

Mr. Blake takes us through his rough, poor beginnings in Nottingham, abusive father and all, without indulging in any sort of precious self-pity. By not falling into this common auto-biographical trap he ends up completely seducing the reader and leaves you wanting more upon more of his shameless beauty.

I am sending this book to all my friends, straight and gay.
And I am going to try and start living my life with a little more irreverent courage in the spirit of a man who has clearly never been afraid of the terrifying exquisiteness we call life.

Editorial Review:

Out of the Blue is a hilarious autobiographical romp that details the life of porn star turned director/producer Blue Blake and his adventures in the skin trade. Blue has worked with every major star in the industry and won many major awards and honors, including induction into the Gay Porn Legend Hall of Fame.

A good read 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an eye-opening book for anyone to read. It's a very descriptive walk through a lovers life torn by a sexual addiction (which is much more prevelant than it is thought of).

worth the buy! 5 out of 5 stars.

It was like being able to talk to a friend about the situation. I really appreciated how both sides got to talk separately about their own view of this conflict. It really opened up lines of communication between my husband and me with honesty and not playing the blame-game.

Good stuff... 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Clay and Renee Crosse have co-authored this autobiographical account of the journey that they have endured through Clay's early success in the Christian music industry, his descent into pornography and the damage that ensued in his career and his marriage, and the restoration that God has brought into their lives. The most striking and helpful part of this book is its brutal honesty. The Crosses have clearly decided that they can serve others most effectively by being fully transparent about their struggles. That certainly includes Clay's struggles with the sin of lust but also includes places where Renee admitted her own spiritual weaknesses. It never seemed like they were sharing too much detail, but their candor is most helpful and all too rare in a Christian subculture that seems to prefer stories of artificial perfection.

Another strength of this book is its readability. Their writing style is very conversational, and it is an easy book to digest. It could probably be read in one or two sittings, but I enjoyed reading it over the course of a few weeks by reading one chapter each night.

There are a few weaknesses, to be sure. The readabilitay of the book is connected to its informal writing style, which also makes it feel almost amateurish at points. Some of the conclusions that they drew concerning big spiritual issues seemed overly simplistic, as if Christians need only to read the Bible and pray more, in which case God is obliged to fix all of our problems. Again, a bit of literary nuance would have clarified some of those finer points.

Also, the shared authorship of Clay and Renee, while providing us with perspectives from their two very distinctive journeys, seemed a bit jarring at times, as they bounced back and forth from one to the other. And there were times when they seemed to remain a bit smug about the early success that Clay had, making sure to point out just how wildly popular he had been. Maybe that was simply to juxtapose their current situation from where they had been, but it felt a bit pompous.

These critiques aside, I'm glad to have read this book. The Crosses have done the Christian community a favor by telling their story. Though this book has some weaknesses, it is good to hear a story of two lives, filled with severe pain and wrecked by sin, that have been restored, though not perfected. Many Christians would do well to learn from Clay and Renee.

Editorial Review:

Dove Award-winning artist Clay Crosse and his wife, Renee, share their personal story of his struggle with pornography and how they rebuilt their marriage.

The REAL Playboy 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Although Playboy is what it is, and because of the reason why many people purchase the magazine, there needs to be an understanding of the true content of the magazine through the years. Remember that the magazine is usually only 20% sex and nude women. That leaves 80% every month to be used for art, technology, controversial editorials, interviews, etc. This tome is huge and heavy, and I'm glad it takes the reader through a tour of 50 years of the COMPLETE world of Playboy. If you only want naked women, don't buy this - buy either "The Playmate Book" or "Blondes", "Brunettes", or "Redheads".

So helpful toward understanding online sex and addiction problems... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Untangling the Web was written to help men and women who struggle with online sexual problems and cybersex addiction. It is offered as a clear and non-judgemental path out of the confusion and heartache that sex addiction brings those with the problem and those who love them.

Great for Partners 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I cried all throughout reading this book. My husband left me after only 5 months married (but years of abuse) saying he was a porn addict. We weren't going to work on it, he decided. He just wanted his life how it had been for 20+ years. Porn addiction really IS an addiction. It ruined two lives. This book explained everything in stories I could relate to and had the best section for partners I have found in a book. I underlined constantly things that emotionally triggered memories of his unpredictable behavior towards me or of my total confusion. And of course a lot triggered the grief that an addiction none of my friends understand ruined my marriage, my future, my trust, my self esteem - the best part was reading how so many other women felt ugly and had their sense of self worth destroyed - I am not alone! He was lying. It was freeing in many ways. It even talked about the romance addict part - especially via email or phone calls. He never was with me in a real intimate way, and he never could be, which hurts the most I guess. This book is equal to 6 months of therapy. However, for more medical information and perhaps a more clinical book, this is not the right one for you.

Editorial Review:

With personal stories from addicts and their significant others, this updated essential resource offers realistic healing strategies for anyone experiencing the devastating impact of Internet pornography and sex addiction on intimacy, relationships, career, health, and self-respect.

Compassionate, passionate, humorous, on-target 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Ted's personal experiences both in his struggle with sex addiction and in his career as a pilot provide a compelling unity to this book. He has a passion for helping the many people who struggle with this problem, but who are not receiving the help where they should be receiving it -- from their churches, who have the truth of the Bible, but often don't focus it in this area.

The book has a dual-fold purpose. Foremost, to help the person caught in the bondage of sex addiction. Secondly, to sound a "wake-up call" to churches who are letting these persons slip through the cracks. It is effective on both counts, though I think Roberts sometimes tries to address both simultaneously, and would be better off focusing on the sex addicts as his primary audience, then addressing the churches in dedicated chapters toward the end.

It is an easy read -- he writes in a conversational and "story telling" manner. He uses humor frequently and in good taste to help break the tension of a tough subject. There are also some helpful chapters from his wife offering her perspective on what it's like to heal along with her husband.

I've read many books on the subject, starting with SLAA's big book, the SA white book, and Christian books such as Every Man's Battle (Arterburn and Stoecker), Faithful and Tree (Laaser), Not Even a Hint (Harris), and the Purity Principle (Alcorn). I found something helpful in all of them, but Roberts' is one of the best. It has the "empathy" of the secular 12-step "big book" literature on sex addiction, but goes beyond self-defined bottom lines and "God as I understand him" to a much more Biblically grounded faith and vision.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Ted Roberts found Christ in the skies over Vietnam, where he flew life-and-death missions as a Marine fighter pilot. Unbeknownst to his wife, however, he also brought home from the war an addiction to pornography. Since his recovery, Dr. Roberts has spoken to thousands of men about similar problems, and he has reached an inescapable conclusion: Hell is using sexual bondage to tear the Church apart! Our world, our homes, our churches have become raging battlefields over this issue, and the Internet a stealth bomber from hell with pornography as its payload. More and more men-even Christian leaders-are fighting for their spiritual lives. Now churches can counterattack the enemy's assault with this effective battle plan and strategy for dealing with sexual addiction. It's a matter of spiritual life or death.
