Editorial Review:

When Harvard medical student Alexa Albert conducted a public-health study as the Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada, the only state in the union where prostitution is legal, neither she nor the brothel could have predicted the end result. Having worked with homeless prostitutes in Times Square, Albert was intimate with human devastation cause by the sex trade, and curious to see if Nevada’s brothels offered a less harmful model for a business that will always be with us. The Mustang Ranch has never before given an outsider such access, but fear of AIDS was hurting the business, and the Ranch was eager to get publicity for its rigorous standards of sexual hygiene. Albert was drawn into the lives of the women of the Mustang Ranch, and what began as a public-health project evolved into something more intimate and ambitious, a six-year study of the brothel ecosystem, its lessons and significance.

The women of the Mustang Ranch poured their stories out to Albert: how they came to be there, their surprisingly deep sense of craft and vocation, how they reconciled their profession with life on the outside. Dr. Albert went as far into this world as it is possible to go — some will say too far — including sitting in on sessions with customers, and the result is a book that puts an unforgettable face on America’s maligned and caricatured subculture.

Weird perspective 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an oral history of the Porn industry taken from a huge number of sources. In a lot of ways it exposes our hypocrisy about pornography, the "yeah I did but I didn't inhale" sort of thing. Interesting stuff, it traces how the early "Hippie" free love culture evolved into a drug crazed, biker gang and organized crime thing. It touches on some of the high profile disasters, Shauna Grant, Savannah, Traci Lords and John Holmes but virtually ignores how the porno industry evolved into big business with large corporations dominating the industry. There's very little discussion of the shift from New York to California production. There's virtually no mention of the impact of the Internet. Well written and well worth reading though. A sequel picking up in 1985 would be nice.

Editorial Review:

A raucous and revealing oral history of the birth of the adult film industry, The Other Hollywood peels back the candy coating to let the true story be told -- by the stars, movie makers, and other industry players who lived it. And what a story it is: Through hundreds of original interviews, contemporary newspaper accounts, police reports, court testimony, and more, Legs McNeil and coauthors Jennifer Osborne and Peter Pavia trace today's billion-dollar industry from its makeshift, mob-connected origins to the Internet age. Along the way we encounter porn stars such as Linda Lovelace, John Holmes, Traci Lords, and Savannah -- along with countless mainstream stars, politicians, FBI agents, and more.

Epic, hilarious, and moving, The Other Hollywood contributes to the porn industry the one thing missing in all previous accounts: a vivid, tragicomic, irresistible humanity.

Editorial Review:

From the popular Bratz dolls to the infamous photos from Abu Ghraib, The Porning of America reveals that porn has become the mainstream—and the mainstream has become porn. Carmine Sarracino and Kevin Scott argue that porn has seeped into and been absorbed by every defining aspect of our culture: language, entertainment, fashion, advertising, sexual behavior, even politics. Cultural absorption is so complete that we no longer have to purchase pornography to get porn because we increasingly live porn on a daily basis.

In tracing porn's transformation—from the Civil War to the golden age of comic books in the 1940s and 1950s to the adult film industry's golden decade of the 1970s and up to today—the authors illustrate that what began in the dark alleys of American life has now emerged as an unapologetic multibillion-dollar industry. In this astonishingly comprehensive book, Sarracino and Scott profile such "porn exemplars"—those who have been pivotal to the mainstreaming of porn—as Russ Meyer, Snoop Dogg, Jenna Jameson, and Paris Hilton; they document how mainstream advertising uses porn culture to sell commercial goods now to an even younger, "tween" audience; and they pose crucial questions: How has porn shaped the way we view our own and others' bodies? Sarracino and Scott examine porned advertising of everything from Clinique to Orbit gum to Old Spice. How has porn influenced our relationships and how do current sexual behaviors, such as the "hookup," mimic porn? The authors look to MySpace and Craigslist for answers. And how does porn shape our identity, as individuals and as a nation? Sarracino and Scott argue that the mistreatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib exposed our porned sensibilities.

Not an anti-porn diatribe, The Porning of America is resolutely pro-sex. Sarracino and Scott contend that, to make the most of our hard-won sexual freedom, we must thoughtfully—and honestly—evaluate what might be liberating about porn as well as what might be damaging. Nuanced, timely, and urgent, The Porning of America will change how you see the world around you.

"This fascinating, provocative book had me glued and makes a great crack at unraveling the mysteries of today's pornography. If you're questioning how to think through the vast array of porn that is now available, The Porning of America has great information and fresh insights that will enhance any debate. I've been involved in the sex industry for over three decades, and yet I learned a great deal from Sarracino and Scott's current research."
—Annie Sprinkle, Ph.D., porn star turned sexologist

"Whether it's the sexualization of girls, a pimp lifestyle, or Abu Ghraib, there's no dismissing the influence of pornography . . . In this smart, provocative book Sarracino and Scott tease apart the dark, debasing forms of pornography—that 'cultural toxic waste' polluting the social body—from the sensual, pleasurable part of us that yearns for expression. This brave, nuanced book tells a story we don't want to know but can't, for the life of us, ignore."
—Lyn Mikel Brown, founder of Hardy Girls Healthy Women and coauthor of Packaging Girlhood

"As someone whose business has been pornography for decades, I'm thrilled with The Porning of America. Sarracino and Scott show a real understanding of the development of porn, and make a convincing argument that porn has become mainstream—and that the mainstream has become porn. Comprehensive and thought-provoking, this is a must read if you want to understand porn and our culture."
—Al Goldstein, founder and former publisher of Screw magazine and Midnight Blue

"Sarracino and Scott—dads first, professors second—open our eyes to the porning of America. Readers are given the history, the politics, and the psychology of porn today. With straight-talk but nuanced arguments, the authors take us on a fascinating and sometimes alarming ride through comic books, pop culture, the Internet, soft-core porn, and on beyond XXX. This is simply required reading for anyone interested in girls' and boys' development and for all of us who care about promoting a sexual ethic of mutuality and care."
—Sharon Lamb, professor, psychologist, and coauthor of The APA Task Force Report on the Sexualization of Girls

"This bold book is both pro-sex and pro-feminist. A critical and comprehensive examination of the misogyny and racism that are alive and well in porn and mainstream society, it nevertheless manages to celebrate sexuality."
—Jessica Valenti, author of Full-Frontal Feminism

a horrifying and unprecedented view of pre-nazi berlin 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I suppose there is the inherent interest and entertainment of antique hardcore erotica for some people, which this book provides, but the things depicted (photographically) and described in this book may completely alter your view of the past.

I guess it is known that Berlin, prior to the rise of the nazis, was a decadant, burlesque place. But the variety and pervasiveness... and SEVERITY of this is not commonly known. In this book you will see gay nomadic boy scouts, theatrical spanking machines, nudist priests, gleefuly incestuous families (depicted in lifestyle journals for apparent mass consumption) and manuals of dentist chair molestation. It really is shocking - and all the more when you recognize these images as decisively in the past, and apparently NORMAL for this time period.

I used to look through this book whenever i went to this bookstore in 2000-2001, mostly browsing and skimming. It made a lasting impression and i have never been able to find similar information elsewhere. According to some of the reviews I've read, the author makes an unsubstantiated claim/conclusion that this period ended not because of social outrage or exhaustion, but because of particular economic and political circumstances. But for myself, foreign to this place and time (and culture), it completely changes my picture of germany, world war ii and modernity. Apparently there were sprawling nihilist fiends BEFORE mankind was confronted with the possability of nuclear annihilation.

I personally consider this a "coffee table book", albeit for S&M yuppies. It is way too flashy and consumable for research purposes. (I would hesitate to site it as a source for any paper.) However, as far as I can tell, it is one of the only accessable documentations of ...something I can't believe I've never heard of.

Editorial Review:

Between 1921 and 1933, Berlin developed a reputation for debauchery unrivaled by any city before or since. Unlike European capitals like Paris, Barcelona, and Amsterdam, where brothel districts were extensive but discreet, in Berlin sexual tourism was a primary industry. On any given evening, over 600 establishments, from massage parlors to sex clubs to cabarets to private torture dungeons, promised unique sights and pleasures. Using tourist guidebooks that appeared before the Nazi period, historical memoirs, and more than 400 specialized journals and books, Mel Gordon has put together a controversial exploration of Berlin's erotic demiworld and its relationship to the rise of Nazism.

Flawless 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a straight, married woman.

I am certainly not the target audience for this book.
But I am here to tell you that this was by far the most enjoyable
reading experience I have had in at least ten years.

If you are about to buy Augusten Bourroughs, David Sedaris, or John Updike, promise me you will at least buy Blue Blake's book at the same time. He takes a page from all of those writers--revealing, hysterical, and brilliantly sophisticated (which come to think of it are probably adjectives that describe the author himself) but makes it entirely his own. You will never laugh so hard.

What surprises most about this book, however, is how inspiring it is. Every time I picked it up, I would scream in delight at my husband that he HAD to read it. Obviously my joy was stemming from the raucous, delicious humor throughout the story. But more important, Out of the Blue is a tale of survival and hope, tenacity and raw ambition, and drives home the idea that following your dreams really is possible, making life-long friends all over the world along the way. In fact, this is the quintessential American Dream story. (Sorry, Mrs. Palin)

Mr. Blake takes us through his rough, poor beginnings in Nottingham, abusive father and all, without indulging in any sort of precious self-pity. By not falling into this common auto-biographical trap he ends up completely seducing the reader and leaves you wanting more upon more of his shameless beauty.

I am sending this book to all my friends, straight and gay.
And I am going to try and start living my life with a little more irreverent courage in the spirit of a man who has clearly never been afraid of the terrifying exquisiteness we call life.

Editorial Review:

Out of the Blue is a hilarious autobiographical romp that details the life of porn star turned director/producer Blue Blake and his adventures in the skin trade. Blue has worked with every major star in the industry and won many major awards and honors, including induction into the Gay Porn Legend Hall of Fame.

A Photographic Collaboration: Kingdome 19 Embellishes Von Berg 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

UNIVERSAL is a successful collaborative effort between Kingdome 19 (the well known carpenter/graphic artist turned photographer) and Henning von Berg (an equally well known architectural engineer turned photographer), both artists from Germany and both highly respected in Europe and now the USA. Their subject matter is the male nude and their similarities are their focus on non-studio settings and on their brave depiction of the aroused male.

From von Berg's vast collection of photographs, Kingdome 19 re-worked many in his developing room, adding graphic details, works, markings, and other artistic elements, enhancing von Berg's sometimes static works immensely. But the book also shares many of Kingdome 19's own photographs, all presented in sepia toning, all with some degree of handcrafted manipulation to enhance the artistic aspect of the finished product, and all sensually beautiful in the casual manner in which he shares his models' willingness to be totally free with their posing.

As the art world (since Mapplethorpe) has matured more and more to the point that male nudity, and even aroused male images, is becoming more accepted. Certainly at the top of the list of brave photographers is the always exciting work of Kingdome 19. This book contains nearly 150 images that are strong and challenging. Another fine book from Bruno Gmunder Verlag GmbH. Grady Harp, January 07

Editorial Review:

Exciting shots of striking, well-hung, powerful men, posing in artistically arranged lighting. Meticulously processed in the lab by the artist himself, the photographs have a graphic quality, confronting us with naked reality. In solo portraits, often surreal and classically elegant, the dream bodies set your desires burning. The edgy fantasies are so vivid, you can almost smell the sweat.

Great for Partners 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I cried all throughout reading this book. My husband left me after only 5 months married (but years of abuse) saying he was a porn addict. We weren't going to work on it, he decided. He just wanted his life how it had been for 20+ years. Porn addiction really IS an addiction. It ruined two lives. This book explained everything in stories I could relate to and had the best section for partners I have found in a book. I underlined constantly things that emotionally triggered memories of his unpredictable behavior towards me or of my total confusion. And of course a lot triggered the grief that an addiction none of my friends understand ruined my marriage, my future, my trust, my self esteem - the best part was reading how so many other women felt ugly and had their sense of self worth destroyed - I am not alone! He was lying. It was freeing in many ways. It even talked about the romance addict part - especially via email or phone calls. He never was with me in a real intimate way, and he never could be, which hurts the most I guess. This book is equal to 6 months of therapy. However, for more medical information and perhaps a more clinical book, this is not the right one for you.

Editorial Review:

With personal stories from addicts and their significant others, this updated essential resource offers realistic healing strategies for anyone experiencing the devastating impact of Internet pornography and sex addiction on intimacy, relationships, career, health, and self-respect.

Editorial Review:

Most people might, understandably, predict that the world's first porn star was a woman, but they would be wrong. John Curtis Holmes was just a simple country boy from Ohio when he moved to California in 1964. It was the infancy of hardcore, so in Holmes' wildest dreams, he could not have predicted the turbulent ride on which he had embarked by publicizing his private parts. With the fame he achieved by playing his most famous character - a gun toting detective named Johnny Wadd - came money. Holmes was pleased to spend it on his wife and mistresses, but soon was in over his head after he became addicted to cocaine. Unfortunately for Holmes, in the years that followed, his addiction led him into several desperate choices - including setting up a robbery at the home of Ed Nash, a powerful L.A. nightclub owner. The robbery resulted in one of the most gruesome, unsolved, multiple-murders in Hollywood history. Amazingly, before his untimely death in 1988, Holmes regained his momentum, remarried and rebuilt his life and career. However, the grave consequences of his addiction, his association with the Wonderland murders, and his AIDS-related death made him an infamous figure in pop culture. Digging past the stigmas, John Holmes: A Life Measured in Inches - the first biography about John C. Holmes - unearths the human being behind the penis and proves that there was more to him than could be measured in inches. This biography includes material from the authors' new interviews with: Laurie Holmes, Bill Amerson, Bob Chinn, Julia St. Vincent, Detective Tom Lange, Detective Frank Tomlinson, Paul Thomas, Ron Jeremy, Seka, Marilyn Chambers, Candida Royalle, Rhonda Jo Petty, Dr. Sharon Mitchell, Bill Margold, and many others! John Holmes: A Life Measured in Inches also includes over 100 reviews of John's most notable films, photos and a filmography. The first biography of John Curtis Holmes, The King of Porn!

Compassionate, passionate, humorous, on-target 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Ted's personal experiences both in his struggle with sex addiction and in his career as a pilot provide a compelling unity to this book. He has a passion for helping the many people who struggle with this problem, but who are not receiving the help where they should be receiving it -- from their churches, who have the truth of the Bible, but often don't focus it in this area.

The book has a dual-fold purpose. Foremost, to help the person caught in the bondage of sex addiction. Secondly, to sound a "wake-up call" to churches who are letting these persons slip through the cracks. It is effective on both counts, though I think Roberts sometimes tries to address both simultaneously, and would be better off focusing on the sex addicts as his primary audience, then addressing the churches in dedicated chapters toward the end.

It is an easy read -- he writes in a conversational and "story telling" manner. He uses humor frequently and in good taste to help break the tension of a tough subject. There are also some helpful chapters from his wife offering her perspective on what it's like to heal along with her husband.

I've read many books on the subject, starting with SLAA's big book, the SA white book, and Christian books such as Every Man's Battle (Arterburn and Stoecker), Faithful and Tree (Laaser), Not Even a Hint (Harris), and the Purity Principle (Alcorn). I found something helpful in all of them, but Roberts' is one of the best. It has the "empathy" of the secular 12-step "big book" literature on sex addiction, but goes beyond self-defined bottom lines and "God as I understand him" to a much more Biblically grounded faith and vision.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Ted Roberts found Christ in the skies over Vietnam, where he flew life-and-death missions as a Marine fighter pilot. Unbeknownst to his wife, however, he also brought home from the war an addiction to pornography. Since his recovery, Dr. Roberts has spoken to thousands of men about similar problems, and he has reached an inescapable conclusion: Hell is using sexual bondage to tear the Church apart! Our world, our homes, our churches have become raging battlefields over this issue, and the Internet a stealth bomber from hell with pornography as its payload. More and more men-even Christian leaders-are fighting for their spiritual lives. Now churches can counterattack the enemy's assault with this effective battle plan and strategy for dealing with sexual addiction. It's a matter of spiritual life or death.

Written to a SHARP Point! 5 out of 5 stars.

Having been involved in various aspects of kink since the late 70's, I'm usually unimpressed with the crop of fad-riding how to's about the subject popping up these days. Come Hither, however, breaks through the pack and stands out remarkably as a MUST READ if you're serious about understanding the amazing possibilities that can come from exploring natural, kink-filled passions (or need a useful tool in helping a loved one understand).

Rather than coming off as a stale, academic guide, Dr. Gloria Brame has witfully woven together all of the basics in an innovative form that can be easily molded to individual tastes. Her experience in the field of sexology comes through solidly in the many technical tips offered in the text, but I also found that the book provided a nice blend of pertinent anecdotes and useful opinions that gives the reader ample food for thought in drawing their own conclusions. While perhaps not groundbreaking in its content, Come Hither clearly leaps to the head of the class as a literary model in portraying kink as healthy, safe, exciting and most of all, FUN!

Great info. Great ideas. Great style. I strongly recommend it to everyone regardless of experience level.
