Editorial Review:

A book that focuses on the logic behind the concepts of statistics for psychology, using definitional formulas rather than emphasizing rote memorization. Clearly written, each procedure is conveyed both numerically and verbally, with many visual examples to illustrate the text. It takes the reader from basic procedures through analysis of variance (ANOVA), and not only teaches statistics, but also prepares the user to read and understand research articles as well. This book is an introduction to statistics for psychology, covering such topics as order in a group of numbers; mean, variance, standard deviation, and Z scores; correlation; prediction; the normal curve, probability, and population versus sample; hypothesis testing; the t test; analysis of variance; chi-square tests; the general linear model; and making sense of advanced statistical procedures in research articles. For statisticians, psychologists and those involved in psychological research in the behavioral and social sciences.

The book arrived in a timely manner and was in like-new condition.

Great introduction to phenomenology 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

i didn't give this book 4 stars because, frankly, i haven't read enough books on phenomenological research to feel confident that this book is a 5. but, despite this being called a philosophy of education book, this is really a primer on Van Manen's brand of phenomenology--phenomenology with a more constructivist bent. the book functions as a great introduction not only to the phenomenological mindset (mainly inspired by gadamer), but also to qualitative inquiry in general.

Van Manen writes in an accessible way, making the book ideal for the uninitiated. i would recommend this book to anyone hoping to learn more about phenomenology as an approach to qualitative research.

Editorial Review:

Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation fills an important gap in qualitative research literature by specifically addressing the fast-growing practice of qualitative master's studies and doctoral dissertations in colleges and universities throughout the world. Many students struggle with turning qualitative research projects into a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation because the research itself is inherently messy. To address this challenge, authors Linda Dale Bloomberg and Marie Volpe have distilled decades of experience into a first-of-its-kind, highly practical reference for graduate students.

  • Offers “roadmaps” in the form of tables, figures, and matrices. These are intended as “working tools” to clarify thinking, and to organize and present data.
  • Presents an integrative summary discussion at the end of each chapter that highlights key concepts and issues raised in the chapter
  • Provides comprehensive checklists at the end of each chapter to review what has been accomplished before proceeding to the subsequent chapter.
  • Includes an annotated bibliography in each chapter for easy referral to additional relevant sources.
Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation is a must-have resource for any student contemplating a qualitative research project, thesis, or dissertation, and equally valuable to researchers undertaking and writing up their qualitative research.

Early Praise for Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation

“Bloomberg and Volpe wisely, caringly, and thoughtfully share their hard-earned experience and the experiences of many doctoral students’ journeys from diverse universities, which are profound. Their wisdom is offered in an easy-to-understand fashion and provides practical advice for doctoral students as they move forward in each and every step of their dissertation journeys. They speak eloquently to broad and intricate principles and nuances of qualitative research and to how to work with qualitative data. This is extremely valuable book and I suggest that you use it in your courses as you work to support your students-and your teaching. I will use it in mine. It is a gift!"
-Ellie Drago-Severson, Teachers College, Columbia University

“Working in the post-course limbo that is the dissertation stage is the hardest part of the life of a graduate student. Drawing on the experiences of doctoral students across the United States, Linda Dale Bloomberg and Marie Volpe aim to provide a practical and accessible guide to dealing with the obstacles and pitfalls that confront researchers as they struggle with writing a qualitative dissertation.”
-Stephen D. Brookfield, University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis-St Paul

“Bloomberg and Volpe have written a refreshingly pragmatic, must-read text that is geared toward getting doctoral students back on the fast track to completing their qualitative dissertations. They expertly unveil the shroud of mysticism that surrounds the process of writing a qualitative dissertation by writing in a succinct, straightforward manner, providing concrete examples, and offering ample practical advice and hope. The ideas presented are extraordinarily clear and simple, yet comprehensive in breadth and profound in depth - precisely what's needed to complete a qualitative dissertation.”
-Julia Sloane, Founder of Sloan International Consulting

“The dissertation study can seem, to many people, like the longest, loneliest, and most difficult open book exam that they will ever take. Bloomberg and Volpe give not just a clear roadmap, but a personal account of the journey - both of the research task and of the interpersonal and political processes that must be navigated to complete it. What I like best is that they do not stop with the dissertation document, but help the student think beyond the study to the publications and potential research streams that it may launch. This then is really a mentoring guide for new scholars, not just a great resource for students writing a dissertation.”
-Karen E. Watkins, University of Georgia

“Bloomberg and Volpe’s Completing Your Qualitative Dissertation: A Roadmap From Beginning to End, is a must read for students committed to the wonderful and rewarding journey that transforms an idea requiring passionate research, into a dissertation that merits scholarly and confident completion. This work is an essential resource, and in it are meaningful lessons for all students serious about qualitative research.”
-John M. Carfora, Amherst College

“This book does so much to de-mystify both the process of conducting qualitative research as well as writing a dissertation. Not only do I wish the book had been available when I was a student, but I wish all of my advisees had been able to have such a rich resource. This book will definitely be required reading and reference for my future students!”
-Barbara A. Macaulay, University of Massachusetts

“Completing a qualitative research project can be a messy task for both experienced and inexperienced researchers, and for those who are working on their first qualitative project for their dissertation, the ambiguity can be a stopper. The authors “walk beside” their readers on this challenging learning journey, providing both concrete tools for bringing clarity to some of the conceptual challenges and practical suggestions for crafting a quality dissertation. I see this book as an invaluable aid for my students.”
-Ann K. Brooks, University of Texas, Austin

Editorial Review:

Does the number of children gunned down double each year? Does anorexia kill 150,000 young women annually? Do white males account for only a sixth of new workers? Startling statistics shape our thinking about social issues. But all too often, these numbers are wrong. This book is a lively guide to spotting bad statistics and learning to think critically about these influential numbers. Damned Lies and Statistics is essential reading for everyone who reads or listens to the news, for students, and for anyone who relies on statistical information to understand social problems.
Joel Best bases his discussion on a wide assortment of intriguing contemporary issues that have garnered much recent media attention, including abortion, cyberporn, homelessness, the Million Man March, teen suicide, the U.S. census, and much more. Using examples from the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other major newspapers and television programs, he unravels many fascinating examples of the use, misuse, and abuse of statistical information.
In this book Best shows us exactly how and why bad statistics emerge, spread, and come to shape policy debates. He recommends specific ways to detect bad statistics, and shows how to think more critically about "stat wars," or disputes over social statistics among various experts. Understanding this book does not require sophisticated mathematical knowledge; Best discusses the most basic and most easily understood forms of statistics, such as percentages, averages, and rates.
This accessible book provides an alternative to either naively accepting the statistics we hear or cynically assuming that all numbers are meaningless. It shows how anyone can become a more intelligent, critical, and empowered consumer of the statistics that inundate both the social sciences and our media-saturated lives.

Editorial Review:

Winner of the 2006 Giovanni Sartori Book Award, given by the American Political Science Association's Qualitative Methods Section.

The use of case studies to build and test theories in political science and the other social sciences has increased in recent years. Many scholars have argued that the social sciences rely too heavily on quantitative research and formal models and thus have attempted to develop and refine rigorous methods for using case studies. This text presents a comprehensive analysis of research methods using case studies and examines the place of case studies in social science methodology. It argues that case studies, statistical methods, and formal models are complementary rather than competitive.

The book explains how to design case study research that will produce results useful to policymakers and it emphasizes the importance of developing policy-relevant theories. It offers three major contributions to case study methodology: an emphasis on the importance of within-case analysis, a detailed discussion of process tracing, and development of the concept of typological theories. Case Studies and Theory Development in the Social Sciences will be particularly useful to graduate students and scholars in social science methodology and the philosophy of science, as well as to those designing new research projects, and will contribute greatly to the broader debate about scientific methods.

Great Value! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I have never seen a one-volume dictionary of psychology that comes close to this book in its exhaustive coverage of topics in the field of psychology. It seems like every time I see a book with the word "Oxford" on the cover it's a sure bet that I'm going to give it five stars.

Although I haven't read the entire book (who reads a whole dictionary?) I won't rule out doing so in the future.

Editorial Review:

With over 11,000 entries, this comprehensive and up-to-date dictionary covers all branches of psychology. Clear, concise descriptions for each entry offer extensive coverage of key areas including cognition, sensation and perception, emotion and motivation, learning and skills, language, mental disorders, and research methods. The range of entries extends to related disciplines including psychoanalysis, psychiatry, the neurosciences, and statistics. Entries are extensively cross-referenced for ease of use, and cover word origins and derivations as well as definitions.
In addition to the alphabetical entries, the Dictionary of Psychology, Second Edition also includes appendices covering over 800 commonly used abbreviations and symbols, as well as a list of phobias and phobic stimuli, with definitions. Comprehensive and clearly written, this dictionary is an invaluable work of reference for students, lecturers, and the general reader with an interest in psychology.

Simply the best: read it at least twice 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I read this book twice. The first time, I thought that it was excellent, the best compendium of ideas of social science by arguably the best thinker in the field. I took copious notes, etc. I agreed with its patchwork-style approach to rational decision making. I knew that it had huge insights applicable to my refusal of general theories [they don't work], rather limit ourselves to nuts and bolts [they work].
Then I started reading it again, as the book tends to locate itself by my bedside and sneaks itself in my suitcase when I go on a trip. It is as if the book wanted me to read it. It is what literature does to you when it is at its best. So I realized why: it had another layer of depth --and the author distilled ideas from the works of Proust, La Rochefoucault, Tocqueville, Montaigne, people with the kind of insights that extend beyond the ideas, and that makes you feel that a reductionist academic treatment of the subject will necessary distort it [& somehow Elster managed to combine Montaigne and Kahneman-Tversky]. So as an anti-Platonist I finally found a rigorous treatment of human nature that is not Platonistic --not academic (in the bad sense of the word).
Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Editorial Review:

This book is an expanded and revised edition of the author's critically acclaimed volume Nuts and Bolts for the Social Sciences. In twenty-six succinct chapters, Jon Elster provides an account of the nature of explanation in the social sciences. He offers an overview of key explanatory mechanisms in the social sciences, relying on hundreds of examples and drawing on a large variety of sources-psychology, behavioral economics, biology, political science, historical writings, philosophy and fiction. Written in accessible and jargon-free language, Elster aims at accuracy and clarity while eschewing formal models.

Editorial Review:

Recipient of the 1994 Critics' Choice Award from the American Educational Studies Association

"This exposition of the principles of narrative analysis is a crisp and thankfully accessible introduction to a range of more or less formal techniques for the interpretation of first-person oral narratives. . . . Riessman organizes her discussion in a down-to-earth way. . . ."

--Patricia Uberoi in Contributions to Indian Sociology

"Her concise and well-organized book, Narrative Analysis, contributes important insights to the qualitative methods literature. It is directed toward scholars and graduate students of various disciplines, as a methodological guide for analyzing transcripts of first-person stories or experiences. The book is also relevant for researchers interested in the substantive areas of women's lives and medical sociology . . . . Riessman's book provides a useful guide for marketing researchers; particularly those aligned with the interpretive camp . . . . because marketing researchers are increasingly interested in studying both consumers' and managers' stories. . . Narrative Analysis should be useful to an even wider audience."

--George M. Zinkhan & Denise E. Delorme in Journal of Marketing

"Catherine Kohler Riessman's handbook not only provides a basic introduction to the social scientist using narrative as a tool, but also offers a strand of feminist research as her central example . . . . It is a useful text to include in course offerings on discourse analysis."

--Discourse and Society

"The book offers communication researchers some of the best recent work on qualitative inquiry in the human disciplines . . . . Published by Sage, the leading publisher of qualitative research in the social sciences today . . . . The heart of her tightly argued text turns on forms of narrative (linked stories, conversations, life stories) and their analysis . . . . This work should be read against and alongside Atkinson and Silverman . . . . This work brings the communication scholar up-to-date on where qualitative methods are in current sociological and educational discourse." --Norman K. Denzin in Journal of Communication "[This book] does what it intends to do and does that clearly and with lively and interesting examples. I think both students and teachers will find it compelling and useful. I plan to assign it in my seminar on narrative and description next semester."

--Jay Gubrium, University of Florida

"In this text, Catherine Kohler Riessman discusses many of the important questions that face narrative scholars. As such, the book is a good introductory text for narrative methodology. For those who have read within the field previously, this work reminds the reader of some of the important questions that need to be addressed in narrative work . . . . This text is a valuable effort in an attempt to synthesize some of the main aspects of narrative methodology."

--Journal of Contemporary Ethnography

"An excellent resource for individuals interested in the systematic use of narrative in social science research."

--The American Journal of Family Therapy

People tell stories to help organize and make sense of their lives. In the past, their narratives have often been torn apart by social scientists looking for themes, variables, and specific answers to specific questions. But in recent years, the development of narrative analysis has given life to the study of the narrative as a form of information for social research. Why are they constructed as they are? How does one dissect a narrative to understand the lived experience of the narrator? What steps can the researcher take to translate these tales and life stories into usable research? Catherine Kohler Riessman provides a detailed primer on the use of narrative analysis, its theoretical underpinnings and worldview, and the methods it uses. Replete with examples and transcriptions from previous narrative studies, her book is a useful introduction to this growing body of literature.

This is an instructional book for future reference librarians to learn how to better serve their patrons. It is quite interesting but can be dry in parts. I am using it for a class and have learned much.

Fabulous book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I highly recommend this book for all library school students, and for practicing librarians too. The book mentions many of the resources available, and tells you how to use them too.

Editorial Review:

This innovative text features an all-new approach that will change the way you think about reference service. The only reference text to identify the top resources in major subject areas and genres, it shows students how to approach the reference query by matching specific types of question to the most appropriate format (when answering questions that require handy facts, for example, go first to ready reference sources; for questions about current events and issues, start with indexes). Guided by an advisory board and a focus group, the authors have achieved an ideal balance between practical elements and guiding principles. This landmark text is sure to be of interest to LIS educators, students, and both novice and experienced reference professionals.

Excellent 4th edition 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have purchased a copy of MEASURES FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE since the first edition. First, note that the editors include "AND RESEARCH" for the 4th edition.

While teaching research, I assign students an instrument to study. I have employed MEASURES FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE for this assignment. Using real instruments is a great way to shepherd students into understanding complex concepts such as reliability, validity, factor analysis, alpha coefficient, etc. I use other volumes for this assigment, but students are more apt to select an instrument from Fischer and Corcoran. They do an excellent job of providing the details. The other options include:

Antony, M. M., Orsillo, S.M. & Roemer. L. (2001). Practitioner's Guide to Empirically Based Measures of Anxiety. NY: Kluwer Acdemic/Plenum Publishers.
Bearden. W, Netemeyer, R.G. & Mobley, M.F. (1993). Handbook of Marketing Scales. Sage.

Robinson, Shaver & Wrightsman. (1991). Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes. Volume I Academic Press.
Sajatovic, M. & Ramirez, L. F. (2001). Rating Scales in Mental Health. Hudson, OH: Lexi-Comp Inc.
Shaw & Wright. (1967). Scales for the Measurement of Attitudes, NY: McGraw-Hill.

Volume 1 includes 59 instruments for couples, families and children. All are very helpful for teaching and research. Final warning: some of these instruments are copy protected. For this, Fischer and Corcoran include an explicit note identifying which instruments cannot be copied from the book and used without first gaining permission.

Editorial Review:

The fourth edition of this essential resource has dozens of new scales as well as updated information for existing instruments, expanding and cementing its utility for members of all the helping professions, including psychology, social work, psychiatry, counseling, nursing, and medicine. Each instrument is reproduced in its entirety and critiqued by the editors, who provide guidance on how to select and score them. This first volume covers measures for use with couples, families, and children; its companion focuses on adults. Alone or as a set, these classic compendiums are powerful tools that clinicians and researchers alike will find an invaluable addition to - or update of - their libraries.
Giving clinicians the scales they need to measure their clients' problems and monitor their outcomes, these all-in-one sourcebooks bring effective, accountable practice within reach for today's busy professionals.
