A Treasure Trove 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Norman Yetman has done every researcher of African American history a great service by his splendid compilation in "When I Was a Slave." Yetman used a precise formula for inclusion and/or exclusion in order to compile these narratives out of more than 3,000 interviews performed by the WPA in the 1930s. They are clearly representative of the entire 3,000, while at the same time of greater length and providing more detail than the 2,900 others.

Here the reader hears first-hand the voices of the ex-enslaved African American--telling his or her story with startling imagery and amazing detail. This is a one-of-a-kind collection well worth buying, reading, and re-reading.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction , Spiritual Friends: A Methodology of Soul Care And Spiritual Direction, and Soul Physicians.

Editorial Review:

More than 2,000 interviews with former slaves, who, in blunt, simple language, provide often-startling first-person accounts of their lives in bondage. Includes some of the most detailed, compelling, and engrossing life histories in the Slave Narrative Collection, a project funded by the U.S. Government. An illuminating source of information.

Editorial Review:

The Eleventh Edition of Becoming a Master Student raises the bar for Student Success texts. While the vision and proven content of the text has been maintained, the Eleventh Edition has been rejuvenated with a cleaner, more sophisticated design that appeals to both traditional students and adult learners. Other enhancements include a new organizational framework that provides structure throughout the text and helps students learn to monitor thinking and learning; career application case studies at the end of each chapter that allow students to apply new skills to the workplace right away; improved integration of learning styles within each chapter to make addressing the four modes of learning easier; and expanded coverage of multiple intelligences and a new visual, auditory, and kinesthetic inventory in to help students discover more about their individual learning styles.

The long-standing best seller in student success, Becoming a Master Student gives students a framework for examining their lives from a self-discovery perspective. Through a student-created and value-based approach to life and learning, the text inspires and motivates students to acquire and develop the skills needed for success in college and throughout life. Articles, strategies, and exercises help students understand their strengths and weaknesses, set goals, and practice academic and life skills.

  • Master Student Map (Metacognitive Application Process) feature provides an organizational framework that introduces each chapter and acts as a common theme throughout the text to guide students in monitoring thinking and learning.
  • Power Process: "Discover What You Want" motivates students to act on their goals.
  • Technology chapter assists students in mastering learning in an online environment; finding useful, accurate information on the Internet; and taking part in online communities that promote success.
  • Put It to Work feature shows students how skills apply to the world of work. Similarly, the feature discusses how skills developed in the workplace can translate to academic work.
  • Money Management coverage in the new "Planning" chapter helps students get started in planning their finances right from the start.
  • Discovery and Intention Journal Entry System asks students to explain the whys, whats, and hows in their writing, and offers instructors a more specific and measurable form of journal writing than any other text.
  • Journal entries at the beginning of each chapter stimulate thinking and help students understand why the material is beneficial; articles provide students with information, ideas and suggestions to help them succeed; exercises engage students and allow them to practice new skills; and Discovery and Intention Statements and Learning Style Applications at the end of each chapter show students how to tie all the information together and use it in the future.
  • Master Student Profiles include Craig Kielburger, Paul Farmer, and Bayard Rustin, as well as Suny Urrutia Moore, Greg Louganis, César Chávez, Helen Keller, Barbara Jordan, Ron Brown, Fred Smith, Christopher Reeve, and Golda Meir.

A new way to look at old strategies 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've watched baseball since I was a kid 40 years ago. I'd heard of Bill James and kind of knew about saberemetrics, but had never taken the time to learn anything about the new numbers.

This book was a great introduction. The concepts are explained well, and all are tied to real world examples I could understand so it wasn't like reading a statistical treatise.

Some of the concepts confirmed things I already knew, like how silly it is to rely on batting averages. Then there were other topics, like why it's not always a good idea to bunt that I had heard other people espouse, but conflicted with my traditional baseball thinking. After reading the chapter on it, I'm convinced.

Finally, one of the things I most enjoyed about the book was the many ways they compared current stars to former stars and current teams to past teams. That's one of the richest areas of baseball debate, and it's always been totally subjective. And it gets a little stranger when people arguing for the 1930s Yankees are two generations removed from ever seeing them play. But the authors lay out very reasonable statistical measures of how to compare players and teams across time. It certainly won't end debate--this is baseball we're talking about. But it adds a splendid new dimension.

Editorial Review:

Since the baseball statistics revolution began in the 1970s, no one had written the book that reveals, across every area of strategy and management, how the best practitioners of statistical analysis in baseball think about numbers and the game. Until now. Baseball Between the Numbers covers every aspect of the national pastime, examining the subtle, hidden aspects of baseball, bringing them out into the open, and showing us how our favorite teams could win more games. This is a book that every fan, every follower of sports radio, every fantasy player, every coach, and every competitor at any level can enjoy and learn from.

this book is great! very interesting studies that psychologist have made throughout tHE YEARS. I USE IT FOR my psych class in college.

A great book for any psychology student (or fan!) 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book does an excellent job of summarizing the most important contributions of psychological research in its relatively young history. As a psychology professor, I plan to use this book in the classroom -- many of my colleagues already do. It gives students a great history lesson and also familiarizes them with past and current theories in the field of psychology. We especially love how the author includes more recent studies that have resulted from the original 40 studies -- current directions, so to speak. Great book!

Editorial Review:

This unique book closes the gap between psychology books and the research that made them possible. Its journey through the “headline history” of psychology presents 40 of the most famous studies in the history of the science, and subsequent follow-up studies that expanded their findings and relevance. Readers are granted a valuable insider's look at the studies that continue to be cited most frequently, stirred up the most controversy when they were published, sparked the most subsequent related research, opened new fields of psychological exploration, and changed most dramatically our knowledge of human behavior. For individuals with an interest in an introduction to psychology.

I must say I felt bad with the price of the book - I felt it was much too high. But after reading the first few chapters of the book, and noting that it flows and is very easy to understand, I do not have to complain so much now. I am loving the book now.

College book for daughter. 4 out of 5 stars.

Delivered quickly and much cheaper than college book store. This was teacher's edition, which has answers the student edition does not.

Comprehensive Stats 4 out of 5 stars.

This textbook was the recommended text of two that we were required to buy for a doctoral level Stats course. I think that speaks for itself. It's definitely not just a basic Stats text. Worth buying if you want something comprehensive.

Easy to understand. 4 out of 5 stars.

I suck at math, but this book tries to keep it pretty simple, especially if you have a professor that goes along with the book pretty well.

Editorial Review:

`Grounded theory is a highly influential way of working with qualitative data and Kathy Charmaz is a major player, both innovative and fluent. This book is a model student text: lively, carefully argued and full of vivid illustrations. Beginning students and professional researchers will find it to be required reading' - David Silverman, Professor Emeritus, Sociology Department, Goldsmiths College and Visiting Professor, Management Department, King's College, University of London

Kathy Charmaz is one of the world's leading theorists and exponents of grounded theory. In this important and essential new textbook, she introduces the reader to the craft of using grounded theory in social research, and provides a clear, step-by-step guide for those new to the field.

Using worked examples throughout, this book also maps out an alternative vision of grounded theory put forward by its founding thinkers, Glaser and Strauss. To Charmaz, grounded theory must move on from its positivist origins and must incorporate many of the methods and questions posed by constructivists over the past twenty years to become a more nuanced and reflexive practice.

Essential reading for students, new researchers and seasoned social scientists alike, this book is one of those rare things, a textbook that is both accessible to those new to the field but also one that has important things to say about the nature of social enquiry itself.

The third edition of this bestselling resource provides clear, step-by-step guidance for new and experienced interviewers to help them develop, shape, and reflect on interviewing as a qualitative research process. Equally popular for individual and classroom use, the new Third Edition of "Interviewing as Qualitative Research" features: an introduction to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process in its historical context, including an expanded discussion of informed consent and its complexities; special attention to the rights of participants in interview research as those rights interact with ethical issues; and, updated references and suggestions for additional reading for a deeper consideration of methodological, ethical, and philosophical issues, including relevant Internet resources.

Editorial Review:

"On dissertation proposals on which I have served, Patton is by far the most cited qualitative research text."

Ian Baptiste, Penn State University

The book that has been a resource and training tool for countless applied researchers, evaluators, and graduate students has been completely revised with hundreds of new examples and stories illuminating all aspects of qualitative inquiry. Patton has created the most comprehensive, systematic, and up-to-date review of qualitative methods available.

"I am dazzled by the extent of the material that this book describes and clarifies. Patton has shifted the focus of the text to qualitative inquiry in general, which includes qualitative evaluation. New examples from his own work and that of others serve to clarify and deepen understanding of qualitative research topics and processes. New discussion of many current issues and debates in qualitative scholarship (autoethnography, ethical issues of informed consent and confidentiality, focus group/group interviews, computer-assisted analysis, the complexity of creating criteria for judging the quality of qualitative research, etc.) will bring readers up-to-date with the variety in perspectives about (and the variety within) qualitative inquiry. Most of the chapters in the book have been substantially reorganized in ways that augment the reader’s understanding. When anyone asks me about conducting qualitative inquiry, I will say: ‘Get Patton’s book’."

Corrine Glesne, author of Becoming Qualitative Researchers

The Third Edition has retained and expanded upon the exhibits, which highlight and summarize major issues, guidelines, the summative sections, tables, and figures as well as the sage advice of the Sufi-Zen master, Halcolm. This revision will help readers integrate and make sense of the great volume of qualitative works published in the past decade.

"Clearly, this is a vastly improved, much more comprehensive, cogently systematic, and timely review-a tour de force, one might say-of the field of qualitative research, in terms of the theoretical, conceptual, methodological, and normative dimensions/foundations of qualitative research. This is one of the strengths of the volume. It seeks to bring together theory and practice/methods without overburdening one or the other--this is as rare as it is commendable, not to mention extremely useful, not only for the professional researcher, but for the "non-professional" as well."

Lester Edwin J. Ruiz, New York Theological Seminar

New to this Edition

  • Integrates and makes sense of the great volume of qualitative works published in the past decade

  • Offers strategies for enhancing quality and credibility of qualitative findings by presenting a new framework for differentiating five contrasting and competing sets of standards for judging the quality and utility of findings

  • Unravels the complexities of mixed methods and triangulation

  • Explains the new issues and approaches to fieldwork as well as providing detailed analytical guidelines, including software and computer-assisted options

  • Explores, compares and contrasts 16 different theoretical and philosophical approaches to qualitative inquiry

  • Examines alternative interviewing strategies and approaches, including focus group interviews, group interviews, and cross-cultural interviews

  • Identifies the latest Internet resources

Pedagogical Features to Enhance the Reader’s Understanding of the Material:

  • Exhibit Boxes: Summarize and illuminate major points within chapters
  • Chapter Opening Stories by Halcolm: Use wit and humor to engage the reader in reflecting upon the puzzles and lessons of qualitative research
  • Foundational Questions: Orient the reader to the "meat" of the material being presented
  • End of Chapter Appendices: Provide excerpts of detailed examples of particular techniques, such as open-ended interviews, case studies, etc.
  • Comparison Tables: Organize, compare and contrast different approaches, strategies, and paradigms
  • Original Cartoons: Created from the book’s material, illuminate and poke fun at chapter concepts
