Make Sure You Get the FULL Version 5 out of 5 stars.

As other reviewers have noted, this book has a 100% accurate title. It is the single best reference book on research methods you can buy. However, you should note that the version Amazon sells DOES NOT provide the Activation Key for free access to the updated online edition. This is an additional $25.00. If you don't want the activation key, there are used books available for a lot less. If you, like me, need the access to the online version, you'll need to purchase it elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

Thoroughly updated, the third edition of The Research Methods Knowledge Base provides coverage of quantitative methods and enhanced coverage of qualitative methods. It can be used in a variety of disciplines and is ideal for an introductory comprehensive undergraduate or graduate level course. Through its conversational, informal style it makes material that is often challenging for students both accessible and understandable. The Research Methods Knowledge Base, 3e covers everything from the development of a research question to the writing of a final report, describing both practical and technical issues of sampling, measurement, design and analysis.

We used this book in one of my college Sociology classes and it is by far, the Best textbook I've encountered thus far in my college career! You will be amazed at how much this book will teach you about People, Society and Life! It is easy to follow - Kudos to the author for his outstanding writing style! When you sit down to read a chapter in this book, you're done before you know it because it's all just too interesting to put down! I even found myself reading through the chapters that were not assigned! Even if you're not a sociology student, you will LOVE this book! I want my whole family to read it!

Editorial Review:

This best selling comprehensive text shares the excitement of sociology with the acclaimed "down-to-earth" approach that highlights the sociology of everyday life.

The 8th Edition of this highly regarded text retains all the features that have made previous editions so successful. The author has a unique ability to engage students without sacrificing content or talking down to them. With wit, personal reflection, and illuminating examples, Henslin shares his passion for sociology with his readers like no other author of an introductory text can.

Best in its Class 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

You know exactly what's promised when you read the title of this book, and it delivers exactly that, and better than any other book on this topic that I have seen. This is a great companion book to read together with those that address finances and other aspects of preparing for this major life transition. But with relocation being part of so many Americans' retirement strategy, for financial or other reasons, it is really helpful to know in advance what you are getting into. David Savageau makes that task easy through his seven-category rating system. And I particularly liked the fact that the rating system is transparent, so you can make mental adjustments to the ratings based on what is important to you. While moving to another place may not solve all your problems, if you are contemplating a retirement relocation, this book can be very helpful, and can help you avoid mistakes.
John Trauth, Author, "Your Retirement, Your Way."

Editorial Review:

A revised and expanded edition ranks and compares more than two hundred top retirement areas according to costs of living, housing, climate, personal safety, services, employment opportunities, and leisure activities, and guides in choosing the best location for one's lifestyle.

Good handbook for social research 4 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book also for journalists. It has very good chapters how to analyze data.

required textbook, but not a great reference for the future 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This course is required for one of my classes at the School of Public Health at Tulane University. The professor seems to think that we should find the long passages with long stories amusing. Frankly, though, the stories only make for long reading. If you are new to the subject then the stories help drive the concept home. If, however, the material is overlapping with other subjects studied in the past, it will seem boring.

Editorial Review:

This thorough revision of Babbie's standard-setting book for the course (known as the "Bible of social research methods") offers students a comprehensive, straightforward introduction to the field of research methods as practiced by sociologists and other social scientists. Emphasizing the importance of the research process, the book shows students how social scientists design research studies, introduces the variety of observation modes used by sociologists, and covers the "how-to's" and "whys" of social research methods. Students learn how to conduct various types of research, when it is appropriate to use each method, and how to analyze qualitative and quantitative data. The 11th edition provides students with the necessary tools for understanding social research methods and for applying these concepts both inside and outside the classroom--as researchers and as consumers of research.

Editorial Review:

Preparing students for the ever-changing demands of conducting research in today's world, Bookmarks: A Guide to Research and Writing establishes a new benchmark for college research guides, serving as a bridge between old and new traditions for researchers who expect to work regularly in both print and electronic environments. Written in a lively, conversational tone, Bookmarks: A Guide to Writing and Research, offers concrete strategies and models to help students select a topic, refine it, and develop it into a full-fledged research hypothesis; find and position sources; use sources in appropriate and responsible ways to further their projects; and document and complete their final projects for print or electronic publication. In addition to offering such practical advice, the text also asks students to consider important rhetorical issues, such as how to most effectively address an audience and how to craft a considered, balanced argument. Bookmarks encourages students to use new technologies to find reliable information and to use the technologies to locate sources that are most appropriate for their topics and purposes.

Editorial Review:

"This is not a book about how to collect qualitative data but rather what to do with qualitative data that have been collected. . . . For evaluators who work with qualitative data, this book provides a wealth of ideas on organizing, analyzing, and presenting such data. It is. . . a set of resources for practicing teachers. It is well-organized, clearly written, and practical. I have recommended the book to graduate students seeking advice on ways to treat the data from their field studies, and they too have found it helpful."

--Thomas A. Schwandt in Evaluation and Program Planning

"Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman maintain a high degree of integrity in what they propose and how they present their material. . . . The authors also offer a thorough presentation of issues in qualitative research. The book progresses logically and will be of great assistance to anyone engaged in qualitative research. . . . An excellent addition to any researcher’s library."

--Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation

"The book offers communication researchers some of the best recent work on qualitative inquiry in the human disciplines. . . . Published by Sage, the leading publisher of qualitative research in the social sciences today. . . . Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman offer a ''must-own'' text, in the revisions of their highly influential sourcebook on qualitative data analysis. . . . This second edition updates the 1984 edition, outlining a complex and comprehensive model for a causal, grounded theory and variable approach to the management, analysis, and interpretation of qualitative data. A valuable appendix reviews over 200 computer-assisted models of qualitative data analysis. . . . This work brings the communication scholar up-to-date on where qualitative methods are in current sociological and educational discourse."

--Norman K. Denzin in Journal of Communication

"The first edition of this book was terrific, and the second edition sets even higher standards. Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman simply demystify qualitative data analysis, offering practical advice on how to code text and how to compare cases systematically. Most important, they bring the conceptual power of matrix analysis to qualitative research. This book is not just for qualitative social scientists, though. It’s a must-have book for anyone who teaches social research methods."

--H. Russell Bernard, University of Florida

"The second edition of Qualitative Data Analysis is a stunning accomplishment, a major advance beyond their first edition. Thoroughly comprehensive in scope, well-written, and easily accessible, Qualitative Data Analysis provides the best developed and most rigorous set of analytic procedures now available in the social sciences. Qualitative researchers have, with this new edition, a revised and expanded version of their Bible. Its virtues are many: guidelines for reducing and displaying qualitative data; how to build a grounded, conceptual framework; advice on sampling and coding strategies; how to do within and cross-case designs and matrix displays; a thorough review of the ethical issues in qualitative analysis; and strategies for writing and presenting the final report. I recommend that this book be on the shelf of every qualitative researcher. No significant work can be done in this area without reference to Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman’s new book."

--Norman K. Denzin, University of Illinois,

Urbana-Champaign

"I think this is a terrific book, and a definite improvement over the first edition. The additions to Chapters 1 and 2 and the new Chapter 3, address issues that have become increasingly important since the first edition was published, and will make the book more useful and influential. The additions to Chapters 4 and 5 are also useful, as is the reorganization of Chapter 5 to make it more coherent. It’s also more user-friendly."

--Joseph Maxwell, Graduate School of Education, Harvard University

"It is a goldmine of ideas, sources, tactics, recipes, warnings, aphorisms, examples, and questions. A wondrous collection."

--Harry F. Wolcott, University of Oregon

In 1984, the First Edition of Qualitative Data Analysis addressed a critical need faced by researchers in all fields of the human sciences-how to draw valid meaning from qualitative data. It provided methods of analysis that were practical, credible, and reliable. This groundbreaking book has now been revised to take up where the first edition left off and account for the phenomenal expansion of qualitative inquiry since then. In the Second Edition, Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman bring the art of qualitative data analysis up-to-date, adding hundreds of new techniques, ideas, and references that draw on the experience of the authors and many colleagues in the design, testing, and use of qualitative data analysis methods. Each method of data display and analysis is described and illustrated in detail, with practical suggestions for adaptation and use. The growth of computer use in qualitative analysis is reflected throughout this volume, which also includes an extensive appendix on criteria useful for choosing among the currently available analysis packages.

Using examples from a host of social science and professional disciplines and stressing a hands-on, practical approach, Qualitative Data Analysis, Second Edition remains the most complete treatment of this topic available to scholars and applied researchers.

Creswell's Educational Research 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Creswell's third edition is a helpful reference for both graduate students and practitioners who are interested in conducting quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research. This book provides step-by-step methods in data collection and analysis, helping one avoid common mistakes in research, and helping one increase the reliability and validity of a study. In this book, a discussion of different theories and research designs assists the reader in selecting the framework of the study. This is a practical and easy to read book with an excellent chapter on action research, which is especially beneficial to K-12 educators. As a doctoral student, I find this book extremely valuable.

Great job at breaking it down 4 out of 5 stars.

I had to take a research class for my Masters degree. I appreciate this book because it follows one person through their research process. It breaks it down and makes it understandable. It is great for a person that has never had to do formal research.
