Editorial Review:

An utterly original exploration of the world of human waste that will surprise, outrage—and entertain

Produced behind closed doors, disposed of discreetly, and hidden by euphemism, bodily waste is something common to all and as natural as breathing, yet we prefer not to talk about it. But we should—even those of us who take care of our business in pristine, sanitary conditions. For it’s not only in developing countries that human waste is a major public health threat: population growth is taxing even the most advanced sewage systems, and the disease spread by waste kills more people worldwide every year than any other single cause of death. Even in America, 1.95 million people have no access to an indoor toilet. Yet the subject remains unmentionable.

The Big Necessity takes aim at the taboo, revealing everything that matters about how people do—and don’t—deal with their own waste. Moving from the deep underground sewers of Paris, London, and New York—an infrastructure disaster waiting to happen—to an Indian slum where ten toilets are shared by 60,000 people, Rose George stops along the way to explore the potential saviors: China’s five million biogas digesters, which produce energy from waste; the heroes of third world sanitation movements; the inventor of the humble Car Loo; and the U.S. Army’s personal lasers used by soldiers to zap their feces in the field.

With razor-sharp wit and crusading urgency, mixing levity with gravity, Rose George has turned the subject we like to avoid into a cause with the most serious of consequences.

Editorial Review:

Now published in more than twenty countries, David Bornstein's How to Change the World has become the bible for social entrepreneurship-in which men and women around the world are finding innovative solutions to a wide variety of social and economic problems. Whether delivering solar energy to Brazilian villagers, expanding work opportunities for disabled people across India, creating a network of home-care agencies to serve poor people with AIDS in South Africa, or bridging the college-access gap in the United States, social entrepreneurs are pioneering problem-solving models that will reshape the 21st century.
How to Change the World provides vivid profiles of many such individuals and what they have in common. The book is an In Search of Excellence for social initiatives, intertwining personal stories, anecdotes, and analysis. Readers will discover how one person can make an astonishing difference in the world.
The case studies in the book include Jody Williams, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for the international campaign against landmines she ran by e-mail from her Vermont home; Roberto Baggio, a 31-year old Brazilian who has established eighty computer schools in the slums of Brazil; and Diana Propper, who has used investment banking techniques to make American corporations responsive to environmental dangers.
The paperback edition will offer a new foreword by the author that shows how the concept of social entrepreneurship has expanded and unfolded over the last few years, including the Gates-Buffetts charitable partnership, the rise of Google, and the increased mainstream coverage of the subject. The book will also update the stories of individual social entrepreneurs that appeared in the cloth edition.

Editorial Review:

Although most areas of human experience are nowadays discussed freely and openly, the subject of death is still surrounded by conventional attitudes and reticence that offer only fragile comfort because they evade the real issues. The dying may thus be denied the opportunity of sharing their feelings and discussing their needs with family, friends, or hospital staff. Although receiving devoted medical care, a dying patient is often socially isolated and avoided, since professional staff and students can find contact painful and embarrasing. Aware of the strains imposed on all sides by this situation, Dr Kubler-Ross established a seminar at the University of Chicago to consider the implications of terminal illness for patients and for those involved in their care. Patients invited to talk about their experience often found great relief in expressing their fear and anger and were able to move towards a state of acceptance and peace. The seminar, initially composed of students of medicine, sociology, psychology, and theology, but later joined by hospital staff and relatives of patients, enabled many members to come to terms with their own feelings and to respond constructi to what the patients had to teach them.

Editorial Review:

We are all aware of the extreme hunger and poverty that afflict the world's poor. We hear the facts, see the images on television, buy the T-shirt and are moved as individuals and governments to dig deep into our pockets. Yet what happens to all this aid? Why after 50 years and $2.3 trillion are there still children dying for lack of twelve cents medicine? Why are there so many people still living on less than $1 a day without clean water, food, sanitation, shelter, education or medicine? InThe White Man's Burden William Easterly, acclaimed author and former economist at the World Bank, addresses these twin tragedies head on. While recognising the energy and compassion behind the campaign to make poverty history he argues urgently and powerfully that grand plans and good intentions are a part of the problem not the solution. Giving aid is not enough, we must ensure that it reaches the people who need it most and the only way to make this happens is through accountability and by learning from past experiences. Without claiming to have all the answers, William Easterly chastises the complacent and patronising attitude of the West that attempts to impose solutions from above. In this book, which is by turns angry, moving, irreverent but always rigorous, he calls on each and everyone of us to take responsibility, whether donors, aid workers or ordinary citizens, so that more aid reaches the people it is supposed to help, the mother who cannot feed her children, the little girl who has to collect firewood rather than go to school, the father who cannot work because he has been crippled by war.

You really should read this book if you're interested in contemporary attachment theory. 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a doctoral student in clinical psych and I loved this book. While it somewhat deepened my depth of knowledge concerning attachment in psychotherapy, moreso it does an excellent job of showing how it directly relates to what you actually do in a session. It's coverage of and relavence to the current analytic climate (e.g. relational psychoanalysis/intersubjectivity theory) is excellent and supplemented by a thorough discussion of the current empirical evidence coming to our field via related fields (e.g. neuropsych research, cognitive science, etc.). I would recommend this book to any student as part of their graduate training in clinical psych or as an accompanying text to a graduate level psychodynamic or developmental course.

Editorial Review:

This eloquent book translates attachment theory and research into an innovative framework that grounds adult psychotherapy in the facts of childhood development. Advancing a model of treatment as transformation through relationship, the author integrates attachment theory with neuroscience, trauma studies, relational psychotherapy, and the psychology of mindfulness. Vivid case material illustrates how therapists can tailor interventions to fit the attachment needs of their patients, thus helping them to generate the internalized secure base for which their early relationships provided no foundation. Demonstrating the clinical uses of a focus on nonverbal interaction, the book describes powerful techniques for working with the emotional responses and bodily experiences of patient and therapist alike.

Just what I've been waiting for! 5 out of 5 stars.

Any clinician working in an inpatient, outpatient, residential, or ACT team who sees adults, adolescents or families and who is looking to consider implementing a research-proven treatment that works will find something helpful to guide them in this book. Having worked in DBT since the mid-1990's, I can see how this book would have helped me immensely to look at what to consider when starting or adapting a DBT program. Thanks for a useful guide full of insights from the experts in each of these areas. I knew Linda and Kelly were working on this book for a while and couldn't wait to see what all the experts they were able to bring together could contribute to a compilation like this. They have pulled together the best. Very useful.

Editorial Review:

First developed to treat suicidal individuals with borderline personality disorder, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has since been adapted to a range of settings and populations. This practical book--edited by close collaborators of DBT originator Marsha M. Linehan--presents applications for depression, substance dependence, eating disorders, psychosis, suicidal and assaultive behaviors, and other complex problems. Leading contributors, including Linehan herself, describe how to implement this evidence-based treatment with adults, adolescents, couples and families, and forensic clients. Issues in establishing and maintaining an effective DBT program are also addressed. Special features include over a dozen reproducible worksheets and forms, which bookbuyers can also download and print from Guilford's website.

Waste of time. 1 out of 5 stars.

I do not recommend this book unless you have no clue about APA. If, you are somewhat familiar with using APA style in your research papers, do not bother to purchase it. You can glean the same information from the actual 5th ed. of the APA manual. Check with your reference librarian at you college or university. They may be able to provide you with handouts that may actually be more useful. Therefore, I did not find this book user friendly.

"My little story...has turned into prayer."--Emily Dickinson 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

One of the elements of Kathleen Norris which makes reading her so fundamentally satisfying is her ability to weave the words and thoughts of others so seamlessly into her own observations of endeavoring to live a life of faith. "The Cloister Walk" seems to do this with greater facility and to greater effect than "Dakota: A Spiritual Geography."

In "The Cloister Walk," Norris, an apathetic Christian turned agnostic turned yearning Protestant, relates her experiences (physical and spiritual) as an oblate with the Benedictines. This is an accessible memoir of one woman's account of opening the eyes of her heart in her search for God and one that can be enjoyed by anyone striving to hear a still small voice within.

Editorial Review:

The celebrated author of the New York Times bestseller Dakota: A Spiritual Geography turns here to the monastery as her spiritual landscape. She explores monastic life and its meaning with respect to our daily lives. With insight and lyrical grace, she takes us through a liturgical year in a Benedictene monastery. Simultaneous hardcover release from Riverhead. 2 cassettes.

Excellent Resource 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is comprehensive for pediatric clinicians. Format is easy to use and very through information.

reliable source for the pediatrician 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great source to have access to (especially if you're looking up pediatric drugs at home and don't have access to UptoDate or Micromedex). It is a thorough reference. The major down-side is that it lacks an index for generic/trade names. Maybe it's there and I still haven't found it, but this is a problem when one is trying to quick reference a drug. Nevertheless, I haven't found a superior drug reference in a readily available book in pediatrics (online, I'd say Micromedex is even more complete, but in a book, this is the best). Also, for neonatal dosing, I would prefer Neofax.

Editorial Review:

...fully updated, providing up to 24 key points of commonly needed drug information...a practical, convenient, portable guide to the use of medications in children with beneficial charts, graphs, tables, and algorithms.
