Disappointing at best! A book about "giving up" 2 out of 5 stars.

This book was really disappointing. Basically, it tells women: "just give up, you will always take too long to have an orgasm with your partner; just close your eyes, be on top, masturbate, and fantasize while you do it". Nothing wrong with doing any of this, but I couldn't help sensing a feeling of defeat while reading this book...on one hand, the book has its merits for translating to words what many women feel about orgasm, that it takes much longer with a partner than alone, that men have trouble learning the right speed and pressure a women need, that sometimes we are just lazy to go through the whole "process", how frustrated women get when the sex is over and the women hasn't come, etc. (and this why I gave it 2 starts instead of 1 - for its honesty!). However, the solution that the author points out (the so called "3 step") is basically: (1) be on top of your lover (we all know this is the best position for women); (ii) masturbate while you are on top; and (iii) have fantasies to help you have an orgasm quicker.
Guess what the 5 min refer to? Women usually take 4 min to reach orgasm when masturbating themselves! So why not 5 min when doing te same on top of your lover?
In the end, I felt she was talking more about 2 people masturbating on each other, than about a sexual experience you can only have as a couple. This is quite sad. Her honesty and good descriptions added to the "solution" she proposes translates to me as the following message: "just give up women, and masturbate!"
I want to keep trytng to reach orgasm faster with my lover without having to masturbate. This I can do alone! Agree?

This book is awesome! All parents need to read/listen to it. Wish I had had it with my kids, but now I have it for my grandchild. :)

This book is the most blatant example of sexism I have ever read. Basically, Leman believes that women can help their marriages by being submissives who allow their husbands to oggle women, never point out any wrongdoings and NEVER turn down their husbands want and desires. Everything from "handing over the remote" and letting them faulter in family obligations is suggested.If marriage is a 50/50 partnership, Leman hasn't got the memo. I feel sorry for his wife and can't believe he will pass these horrible ideals onto his children. This man has four daughters! Please save your money and buy a book that actually believes that it is o.k. not to be in the mood for sex once in a while and that if your husband gropes you, you have the right to say no if you feel like it. I am actually pulling lines from the book! I need a refund!!!

Decent book but.... 3 out of 5 stars.

but I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the analogies (such as describing why we fight as being because our 'self esteem bank account' is low and we want to make a deposit in it by arguing with a loved one). I did find some helpful hints about ways to diffuse an argument, but I did feel like most of the time the author wants you to 'give in' when arguing because he feels it is better to be loved than be right. I didn't feel like the author really gave any advice on how to handle serious issues where giving in isn't an option. For example, if your spouse is drinking too much and becoming belligerent should you decide that you like being loved more than being right and chose to get over the situation by making a 'deposit' in your spouses self esteem bank account so that they feel better about themselves and are less likely to fight? But to be fair, overall, the book is well written and easy to identify with thanks to the author's many examples, be they personal or from couples he has counseled. One of the best pieces of advice from the book was about calling a time out while arguing during which you spoon or cuddle with each other for five minutes and then resume your argument. Just like the author said in his book, when my husband and I tried this, we found that we no longer wanted to argue after the cuddling. And while the first minute of cuddling was awkward due to the argument, it really was effective in calming both of us down and putting things back in perspective. In my opinion this book is good if you are looking for a way to get over or completely avoid small arguments, but is not very helpful if you are looking to facilitate communication/get past arguments about more major issues.

I was surprised that neither my name, nor my husband's, nor any of my children's names were listed in this book. I suppose I was not imaginative enough. Philip Miller and Molly Devon think that S/M is fun, and "that reading about it should be fun, too." Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns is definitely fun, not to mention approachable, chatty, and insightful. What makes it truly special, however, is the sheer weight of loving details. There's clear explanations and detailed tutorials for beginners, as general as "safe, sane, and consensual" and as specific as "you will be swinging the whip with your arm pivoting at the shoulder." There's also solid advice, safety measures, steamy suggestions, plenty of black-and-white photographs, useful and humorous drawings, an extensive glossary, and over 900 entries of S/M clothing and equipment vendors, publications, computer bulletin boards, and organizations worldwide. As sadomasochism is a practice that's still taboo for many people, the chapter on finding partners and sharing your fantasies with existing partners can be invaluable.

Screw the Roses enthusiastically covers all the basics and even some of the not-so-basics--bondage, negotiation, sex, endorphins, dominance and submission, toys, safety, S/M community, and beyond. It's written primarily from the point of view of male dominant/female submissive interactions, but it's easily translatable into valuable advice for any relationship configuration. The editors really need to revise this book to reflect modern times. It assumes every mom is a stay at home mom and every family has 2 heterosexual parents. The kicker was when it suggested that some moms get together with their kids and develop playgroups, and how they were starting to see it as a trend. Oh, I almost forgot about the suggestion about how moms should try putting their children in part time child care for the day to give themselves breaks. Again, this assumes every mom is a stay at home and "Father" is the primary breadwinner.

The book was a waste of money. I strongly suggest you stay away from this - at least until it gets edited for the 21st century.

Great Book to Help Get an Idea of What's Going On With Your 2 Year Old 5 out of 5 stars.

This is not one of those "do X to solve your child's Y problem." It basically just lets you know what is going on with your 2 and 2.5 year old. The researchers observed 1000's of two year olds over several years and this book is the culmination of their research - in an easy to read format, as well. They do offer general advice - take it with a grain of salt because some of it is REALLY outdated. But the insights on what is going on, what to expect, what's "normal", and the list of toys and books appropriate for two year olds is invaluable. AND, at under 150 pages it is a quick read (since most parents of three year olds don't have much time to do so).
