Editorial Review:

From the stars of TLC's critically acclaimed reality show Little People, Big World comes heartfelt advice to help today's families overcome life's obstacles together and grow closer in the process.

The Roloffs are no ordinary family. Parents Matt and Amy are little people raising four children: a pair of teenage twins, Jeremy and Zachary, one of whom is average size and one who is little; preteen daughter, Molly; and the youngest, Jacob. Being part of this unique family -- where something as simple as shopping for back-to-school clothing can be a real challenge -- has presented no shortage of struggles, and in Little Family, Big Values the Roloffs share the values that have helped them and become the cornerstone of their bond.

Through family stories, each member of the family weighs in on the importance of these values in their life and the lessons -- sometimes hard -- they've learned in doing their best to live by them:

  • Amy tells of the decision she made, out of love for her family, to put her career as a teacher on hold and become a stay-at-home mom.
  • Matt shares how keeping faith that God has a plan for him has helped him tackle any family setbacks with confidence.
  • Jeremy describes the respect he feels for his brother Zach when he sees him on the soccer field giving players twice his size a run for their money.
  • Zachary recognizes his siblings' love for him when they willingly sacrifice a Christmas at home to be with him at the hospital for surgery.
  • Matt's mother, Peggy, reveals how his perseverance with a boyhood paper route helped him become the successful businessman he is today.

In these and other inspiring stories, the Roloffs show us why they've become such a beloved American family and offer advice on how all families can put these values into practice to achieve a greater level of love, respect, and understanding -- no matter what their size.

A book that helps organize for life 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 32 people found this review helpful.

My husband of 36 years asked for a divorce after informing me of a 3-week affair with a woman 4 years older who'd already had quadruple bypass surgery. Go figure! Shock doesn't come close to describing my state.

However, I was not so shocked that common sense didn't kick in -- two days later I ordered several books on Divorce, including Ms. Sember's: I needed to protect what I could for MY future.

The Divorce Organizer & Planner came in good stead. With tears here and there, I worked those sections that were relevant to me (I didn't need to consider child custody/support issues) and collected documents I would need to go through the divorce process. While I had a consultation with a lawyer to make sure I was collecting the info I'd need (and found out the Workbook was right on target!), I did not retain her right away -- nor did my husband seek legal advice.

4 months after "the news," my husband was killed in a freak accident.

Because I'd "done my homework" with the assistance of the Organizer & Planner, I had all the documents and papers necessary to handle the financial and legal affairs that accompany a death: Birth Certificates, Social Security Cards, and Drivers Licenses for BOTH of us, Marriage Certificate, Life Insurance policies, Financial accounts, Lists of assets and liabilities, etc., etc., etc. I was able to obtain benefits, complete probate, and process life insurance claims forthrightly because all the information was readily at hand.

Ms. Sember's book is really a must have for everyone, those contemplating a divorce or not. I really should make it a point to write her a letter and let her know how very helpful she was at a very difficult time in my life.

Editorial Review:

  • Suggestions for selecting an attorney and getting the most legal help for the dollar
  • Tips on how to gather and organize information for easy access during legal proceedings

Parenting Teenagers: Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Teens 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I thought the book was very informative,it lets a parent look at somethings in a different way and helps with better communication between the parent and the teenager. I thought some things were very helpful and some were a little tough to go with, I still feel some rules of grounding are still old fashion rules but they do work and you need to keep them guided on the right track towards their future.

Best Parenting book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Dinkmeyer's parenting books for children and for teens are the best I've used as a parenting expert. The books are easy to understand and put into practice. The parenting principle is based on the "Father of Parenting" - Rudolph Dreikurs. Any book on the use of natural and logical consequences is a spin off of Dreikurs' work. Dr. Don Dinkmeyer was a student of Dreikurs. His books have had great popularity by those who know about parenting counseling.

Editorial Review:

An informative best-seller-updated with a new format and illustrations--with proven techniques for better parent-teen relationships.

Sociology, not theology 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book expecting to get a healthy dose of sociology along with some seriouse theological reflection on the sociological data. I was wrong. In my opinion this book was too heavy on sociology and too lite on theology. If Clark would've spent more time connecting the sociological conclusions to theological implications, the book would've been a gem.

Editorial Review:

What do teenagers really think about adults? If you think you know the answer, you may be in for a surprise. According to Chap Clark, today's adolescents have largely been abandoned by adults and left to fend for themselves in an uncertain world. As a result, teens have created their own world to serve as a shield against uncaring adults. Based on six months of participant-observer research at a California public school, this book offers a somewhat troubling but insightful snapshot of adolescent life. It will surprise and enlighten parents, youth workers, counselors, pastors, and all who want to better understand the hearts and minds of America's adolescents.

The book I wish I had written 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I am a play therapist, author of "The Successful Divorce, In The Eyes of the Child" course and have taught parenting divorced for nine years. This is the book that says it all. The authors teach in clear logical manner how to co parent your children. They are sensitive to the pain both parents and children feel post divorce and teach how to proceed in parenting. I frequently use sections of their book in teaching to remind parents that they must still work together enough to meet children's needs. This is a concise book, no long drawn out narratives or tales of others pain... just the facts and how to avoid the pitfalls. I and the children of divorce, owe these authors a huge thank you. Their new book is also great,

Helps you to fall in love again 5 out of 5 stars.
73 of 73 people found this review helpful.

This book contains worksheets that go along with two other books, "Love Busters" & "His Needs, Her Needs." These worksheets help you and your spouse identify for each other the things that kill your love and the things that help your love to grow. They help make you an expert in what will make your spouse fall in love and stay in love with you. The worksheets also help you identify and avoid the things you may unknowingly be doing to ruin and destroy your spouses love for you. There's also a neat worksheet on recreational companionship that helps you and your spouse decide on activities that you would enjoy doing together. This book is highly practical because it is an immediately effective way to figure out what's wrong in your marriage and it gives you solutions to those problems.

Wonderful for any marriage 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is used in the Family Dynamic's "Dynamic Marriage" course. We've been through the course 3 times. The first time, we were newlyweds and learned a lot about each other. The second time, we'd been married a little while and worked through some issues we needed help in. The third time, we had a great marriage, and we made it even better. It's a wonderful book and an excellent course. I'd recommend it to anyone. The course and the book together have been an indispensable tool in our marriage.

Editorial Review:

Deepen your love and strengthen your marriage by working through the steps outlined in this workbook.

This Book Will Change Your Life! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

For so long I've mostly heard about how important a father is in a child's development. I've never heard anyone else speak about how profound the mother's role is in the child's devlopment like this book does. I feel like I've gone to the eye doctor and have been given new glasses to see more clearly with. I think this book is core reading for anybody who wants to understand why they are the way they are. Like the back cover of the book says, "She shaped you in ways that would surprise you both."

Its alright 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I think this book will be great for some people, but it really didn't help me all that much. The different mothers hardly applied to my situation with my own mother. The controlling chapter fit a little bit, but all it talked about was "learning to say no" and finding your identity. I was the one who rebelled, and I held onto my identity very well. The mothers in this book were much more loving than mine was. It would have been nice if they talked about mothers who were verbally, emotionally, and physically abusive. Where's the "Bi-Polar Mom" in this book?? From a real young age (around 7) I teamed up with God determined to turn out just fine. I even grew up setting my own boundries & parented myself (ex: I wouldn't allow myself to see PG13 movies until I was 13... my mom however could have cared less). I read this in attempt to understand why my mother does the things she does. I've tried to reconcile with my mother, but she refuses to have a relationship with me at all. My mother has resented me since childhood, and even now shes in an imaginary war with me. I'll probably give the book to one of my friends or sell it to half-price books.

Editorial Review:

This encouraging audio doesn’t just help you understand areas in your life that need change and strengthening— It helps you apply your discoveries to attain
new freedom and joy in living, and an increased ability to give and receive love.

Still Using this Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Purchased this book about two months ago, when my son was five, and learned from it tremendously. Wish I had it before he was born so I could have understood his "misbehaviors" from the beginning. Better late than never! Every page of the book is easy to read and implement. The examples given were exactly what I was experiencing. The book shows you how to change and it's up to you whether you want to become a better parent. I hope you purchase it - it's worth the money.

Not worth it 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The basic point seemed to be that if you pay attention and listen to your child all will go smoothly. This seems like a no brainer. Would you be buying the book if you weren't paying attention? The suggestions for discipline, although practical, were very basic. For example, have faith in your child, notice effort, listen for feelings, teach them to cooperate. Most parents already know these things.

Editorial Review:

Based on the nationally successful STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) program, Parenting Young Children focuses on parents of children under six years of age, and offers guidance on building self-esteem, communicating with young children, and dealing with issues from tantrums to toilet training. Illustrations & charts.

This book is part of the STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) series, the world's best selling parent education program.

Don't even hesitate buying this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Whether you buy this book new or used...or borrow it from the library, just read it. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much more pleasant the prospect and actual raising of your teen/s can be.

Just realizing no matter what you do or don't do, they still have minds of their own...is priceless.

Any of his books has the same basic information and applies to all ages...yes, even grown children, spouses, friends, relatives, coworkers, and yourself.

This one simply has more age specific examples of behavior/consequences. The book more than pays for itself.

Editorial Review:

With his trademark user-friendly, humorous, and common-sense style, John Rosemond lays out a perfectly sound and logical case for recognizing the realities of the teen/parent relationship, forming the foundation, and parenting with the Long Rope Principle. In short, the author demonstrates how mom and dad can avoid the pitfalls of becoming dictatorial Control Freaks, skirt the potholes of turning into permissive Wimps, and enjoy the freedom and rewards of parenting in a controlled (but not controlling) and relaxed manner. Infusing young adults with a sense of personal responsibility, then showing them the results of good and bad choices, is a goal every parent can achieve.
