Worked for me and I'm sure will work for my childre 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My parents raised me and my 2 brothers based on the guidelines in this book. We are all now respectful, successful, and well-rounded adults. I never once feared my parents, or hated/resented them. I was only actually spanked no more than 3-4 times in my life, which proves this method works when used properly - never hitting out of anger, etc. I now thank my parents for raising me wonderfully and I only hope I can do half as good of a job with my children. They credit their parenting success to this book and Dr. James Dobson.

Editorial Review:

Children need love, trust, affection--and discipline. From one generation to the next, the challenge of helping children into responsible adults doesn't change. Dr. Dobson's classic Dare to Discipline, a practical, reassuring guide for caring parents, has sold over 2 million copies since its release in 1970. What gives a book that kind of staying power? The ability to meet a real, felt need in the marketplace. Today, a whole new generation of parents is turning to Dr. Dobson's wise counsel. Some things never change.

Tyndale House Publishers and Dr. Dobson are proud to present The New Dare to Discipline, completely updated to meet family needs in the 90's.

Very useful information 5 out of 5 stars.

I have read this book cover to cover and I think the book covers pretty much every aspect of parenting teenagers - I've got two in my home. I bought the "Yes, Your Parents are Crazy" for my teens, as well. I wish Dr. would have mentioned something about cell phones, but I think I can figure them out, too with the help of other info. in this book. I have found some excellent ideas in this book and it has definately helped me maintain my inner "dispassionate cop" when dealing with those inevitable teen moments as well as help my sense of humor resurface. I have often been heard saying that there are lots of similarities in raising infants to teenagers including the number of people giving you unsolicitated advice. I think this book provides more then just more advice; it provides prospective.

yes, your teen is crazy! 5 out of 5 stars.

Amazing book! It has not only helped me with my 16 year old - but is helping me change my relationship with my 14,10 and 8 year old boys for the better. I've already sent copies to friends with younger children - to give them a head start.

Editorial Review:

Reminding parents that you can't relate to a crazy teen the same way you relate to a rational adult, Bradley tells readers how to navigate the adolescent minefield.

Big disappointment-not for parents of kids< 3 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Big disappointment...SAVE YOUR MONEY IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GUIDE FOR KIDS > 3 YRS!!! 1/2 the book tries to sell the attachment parenting FOR BABIES BUT TITLE SAYS BIRTH TO 12 (misleading) and very few tips are given for disciplining pre-school & school age kids. We support some principles of attachment parenting but not others (eg...don't believe in mom wearing baby all day, family bed) as we are aware of people who had had BIG problems using these techniques (not mentioned by Sears of course). Full attachment as they describe is impossible for todays professional women (I am a Dr..can't wear my baby to work, thankyou) & his books tend to support highly stereotypical traditional parenting roles anyway. I was hoping to get some good advice for 4-6 yr olds, not "practice attachment parenting in babies and they'll behave later" mentality. The huge chapter critizing spanking was probaly necessary, although I believe very few educated parents support spanking anyway. As a biomedical scientist, I am disappointed by Sears using anadotal observations as scientific evidence to support attachment parenting. As a well-educated medical professional, he should know better.

This book is absolutely a wake-up call for many people out there who think they don't have enough! Beautifully put together. Outstanding.

this was an eye opener 5 out of 5 stars.

I thoroughly have enjoyed this book, looking at the people from around the world and their possessions and realizing how different I live from another. It was amazing to see each family so proud, of either how little they have or how much they have, and to have all that they own on display (from in the dead of winter to floating on a boat!).

Editorial Review:

In an unprecedented effort, sixteen of the world’s foremost photographers traveled to thirty nations around the globe to live for a week with families that were statistically average for that nation. At the end of each visit, photographer and family collaborated on a remarkable portrait of the family members outside their home, surrounded by all of their possessions—a few jars and jugs for some, an explosion of electronic gadgetry for others. Vividly portraying the look and feel of the human condition everywhere on Earth, this internationally acclaimed bestseller puts a human face on the issues of population, environment, social justice, and consumption as it illuminates the crucial question facing our species today: Can all six billion of us have all the things we want?

A poignant step back from the new millennium... 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Studs Terkel captures in this volume what few children of the new millennium will ever learn about or experience: how our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents grew up, grew old, and left footprints on the twentieth century. His vignettes of life throughout the century, focused on the lives of amazing Americans from coast to coast, are quite profound. Terkel did not profile famous athletes, politicians, and CEOs; his interviews capture the lives of those who have made - and continue to make - an impact on our local communities.

It did not take very long to become addicted to this book. Terkel captures some of the most valuable American minds at just the right moment. The interviews give a first-hand look at history while capturing pearls of wisdom for the future. I recommend this volume as a gift and as a textbook for students. What Studs Terkel has captured here is worthy reading for any generation.

Editorial Review:

Arguably the century's most gifted chronicler of what Americans really think, Studs Terkel has been called "a national resource. . . who gets to the deeper heart of our history and our national life" by John Kenneth Galbraith. Terkel's widely praised, best-selling books Hard Times, Working, Race, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Good War" probe the innermost attitudes in this country toward the Great Depression, work, race, and World War II.

good info! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book contains good info and answers and tips that are often not found in "Christian" books on sexual matters.
The version for newlyweds is great as well..my husband and I do much pre-marriage counseling and recommend this and give it as gifts as well.

WOW! 5 out of 5 stars.

What an incredible book! This was required reading for a counseling course but it's purpose served more than that. Roseneau does an incredible job of communicating how beautiful & sacred an intimate relationship with your spouse should be. God created man and woman to please one another in many ways in addition to intercourse and this book does a great job of instructing couples how to deepen their sexual intimacy. This is definitely worth your money! Roseneau also has a Newlywed version and an over 50 version.

Editorial Review:

God has given us a sexual celebration in marriage. Whether you are about to be married or are already married and have a good sex life, this book is written for you. For couples soon to be married, A Celebration of Sex is an excellent counseling resource that offers information and insight to help recognize potential problems and identify habits that can sabotage their marriage. This frank and abundantly illustrated volume shows how to increase communication, build a close relationship, and enjoy God's gift of sexual pleasure--no matter how long you've been married.

The best advice (from non-Christian) 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have lived a year with a spouse engaged in infidelity. Shock and despair have been my constant companions. All the crying, pleading, yelling, begging, and reasoning did no good at all - my spouse kept relapsing into the affair. At last he was talking of moving out and really taking up with the lover. Once I took the advice of the book, that very first week my spouse went into a tailspin and I felt much more centered and stronger. It was a week from hell for my spouse and a week where various people told me how great I looked! I have discovered that you really have to act in the opposite way that your feelings are telling you to act in this kind of a crisis. Be calm and firm in expressing your boundaries (you are free to leave or stay as you like but if you stay you cannot be in contact with the lover). Open the cage door and have backbone. You have to be willing to back it up. My process in not finished but things are looking up for the first time in a year. It has been almost a month since I took the advice and my spouse is still at home, appologised for all he has put me through and says he thinks he can resist the tempation to be in contact with the lover while he lives under the same roof with me. I read this book together with the book "Not Just Friends" by Shirley Glass which helped me to understand extramarital affairs very clearly. I strongly recommend reading both. I am not a practicing Christian and this orientation in the book is not a problem - the advice is very sound from a psychological standpoint.

Editorial Review:

What makes marriages fail? James Dobson, a noted commentator on family health, identifies mutual disrespect as the underlying cause. His book addresses this problem.

Dobson examines the conflicts occurring between husbands and wives -- infidelity, alcoholism, emotional indifference -- and offers practical advice for the partner who wants to hold the marriage together.

"What emerges is a principle of loving toughness that is applicable not only to families in crisis, but to healthy marriages as well. Genuine love, it would appear, simply must be tough if it is to survive the stresses of today's world." (B-O-T Editorial Review Board)

"Just Sisters" 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a precious book for sisters. The photos and quotes are magnificant. I read it every day. And when my sister and I have a problem, we quote from the book. Bonnie Kuchler did a beautiful job. My favorite is actually from an unknown. "A sister is one who will pick you up when you are down. If she cannot pick you up she will lie down beside you and listen". I'm so glad I could comment on this most beautiful book. Thank you.

Makes a great gift for your sister. 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this for my sister's birthday.
I had to read it first and loved the photos
with the attached sentiments. This makes
a good gift from sister to sister.

Touched my heart 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my sister who is going through some tough times and it conveyed my love and support for her in words and pictures that were endearing and heartfelt.

Editorial Review:

Sisters are wonderful, and sisters are terrible. Depending on the day, the mood, the weather, or the time of day, a sister can be a companion, an adversary, an enemy, or a soulmate. But no matter what, a sister is always a best friend, and the combination of animal photos and quotes in this delightful gift book celebrate the unique duality of sisterhood.

lots of redundancy, but some useful advice 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When my son was about to be born, I panicked, because I thought I would not know how to give a good upbringing to a boy. I have only a sister and my husband is an only child. We discussed the issue a lot and we sometimes had different views on how to deal with boys, to do everything to make our son happy and fulfilled. So - we decided to buy a book and chose "The Wonder of Boys".

The book is not bad, but it is not very good. First of all, there is nothing new in the notion that boys are different from girls and that testosterone is physiologically responsible for these obvious differences, boys being more competitive and aggressive etc. Many things described by the author are obvious and instinctive. I would be happy to see more scientific dissection of the differences, something similar to "Brain Sex" by Anne Moir and David Jessel (a really valuable book, by the way), but with the focus on children and the education of boys.
The "old-new" rules of the boys' education and need for the male presence in their lives, the importance of the group, sports and discipline, are nicely presented at the beginning, but later on the book gets very repetitive, full of redundant information and artificially blown out of proportion. Maybe the purpose was to make the reader memorize the rules subconsciously (after all, it is one of the therapy principles, I think). For me, it just made the book boring and I could not help thinking it would be much more useful in a form of an article or essay. It seems to me more like an introduction to Gurian's guidelines, more developed in his later books on various aspects of the boys' character and education.

There is some advice I found good there, though: the rules for disciplining the boys at different stages of life, the details of the father's role, the discussion on spanking, the teaching of morals and spirituality. I could do without superficial examples from the world cultures.

I did not find this book particularly challenging for feminism, on the contrary, I think it presents reasonably the roles of both parents and the methods for building the family life beneficial for the offspring, which happens to be male.

Altogether, I rate "The Wonder of Boys" at three stars, it is neither outstanding, nor hopeless, but the useful advice needs to be extracted from a lot of meaningless words and the book could only benefit from being more concise and to the point.

Editorial Review:

With the lack of stable traditional families, shifting values, the lure of gangs, the loss of positive male role models, and the widespread depiction of irresponsible sexuality, it has become increasingly difficult for parents to manage the healthy upbringing of young men. Gurian explains what a boy really needs and advises parents, mentors and educators on how to satisfy a boy's desire for his own sense of tribe and initiation into healthy, structured competition, discipline and work.

This is a great book for understanding boys 5 out of 5 stars.
34 of 35 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because it became clear to me that I do not understand my 3 year old son and I realized it would only become worse as he grew older if I didn't at least try to figure out what is going on from his perspective.

I think that this book really tells it like it is. He doesn't sugar coat it. I also think the person who took offense to his saying boys should stay out of daycare until 3 years old did not read the book very carefully. He does not say that mothers should not work, he says boys should not be put in institutionalized day care settings but that good home based day care or staying with a family member is acceptable. I've read this in other books as well that boys just don't do well in daycare they really need one on one close time with a single, consistent care-giver be it mom, dad, grandma or a home day care.

This book also says many times how it is not trying to put women down or trying to set back the women's movement, it is just trying to show how boys are different. I have already noticed this with my children. I have two girls and a boy and I quickly picked up that my son is 6 months to 12 months behind his older sister in his speaking, reasoning and his ABCs. I talked to his preschool teacher about it and was relieved to find out it is normal for boys to be behind girls and the teacher said exactly what this author says, boys catch up somewhere in middle school but until then they are 6-12 months behind girls emotionally and academically. My son has a September birthday and I will be holding him out a year to start kindergarten at 6 instead of 5. I have already seen it in his preschool class how boys are treated, unwillingly as defective girls. Girls take to things like circle time and learning while boys would rather vroom cars and build block towers. I agree whole heartedly with the author that boys acting out in preschool is because they are anxious or stressed out. Girls withdraw when stressed, boys act out, often aggressively.

If you are ready to hear what this author says then buy the book. He is very strong on dad being a big part of a boys life and goes as far to say if dad is working 55 to 65 hours a week he won't cut it as a dad. This is hard stuff to hear, but if you want your son to grow up to be a good man it will take sacrifice on everyone's part. If we want our daughters to marry good men we need to make sure that we are raising good sons.

Editorial Review:

Australia's best-known family therapist and parenting author looks at the most crucial issues from birth to manhood and offers the warm, firm guidance that boys need.
