Editorial Review:

With a title like this, it's no surprise that authors Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish had a monster bestseller on their hands when the book first appeared in 1988. From the subsequent deluge of readers' stories, questions, and issues, they have created nearly 50 pages of new material for this, the 10th anniversary edition. The central message remains the same, and sounds almost too simple: avoid comparisons. But parents know that's easier said than done. The value of Faber and Mazlish's discussions is precisely that they talk you through umpteen different situations and outcomes to help you teach your brawling offspring a new set of responses. The highly informative text is punctuated with helpful summary/reminder boxes and cartoons illustrating key points. It's a must-read for parents with (or planning on) multiple children. But parents of young children who get along fine (so far) should read it too--as the authors make very clear, rivalry is inevitable. The only question is how to manage the rivalry with intelligence and compassion, and on that subject they offer a wealth of good advice. --Richard Farr

Not what I hoped for. 3 out of 5 stars.

He keeps saying that he convinces his critics about how "on target" he is but I found the groupings (i.e. first born, last born, etc.) to be very stereotypical. Yeah, the "babies" do tend to like to be the center of attention and feel they are "written off" but they aren't all financially illiterate. I am a third born (youngest of three girls) and I have to constantly tell my oldest (who is 4 years older than I) about using money wisely. She also is not working and lives with mom. The middle child (three years older went to law school, medical school and now prefers being a mommy to her 4 kids and doesn't want to work...ever, unless she HAS to). I have a graduate degree, am a goofball..yes (when appropriate) and feel as though I am the eldest of the three because I have been both of my parents POA medically and financially because I am the most responsible...and not as self-centered as the older ones. Again, a trait he reserves for the "last born".
He also spends way too much time talking about himself and his family. I felt as though I were reading his memoirs. I like Cliff Isaacson's books better and recommend those.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Leman's ever popular book on birth order is ready for a new generation of readers. With insight and wit, Dr. Leman offers readers a fascinating and often funny look at how birth order affects personality, marriage and relationships, parenting style, career, and children. Whether at home or on the job, birth order powerfully influences the way people interact with others. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about how they react to their world. Dr. Leman even shows readers how to overcome ingrained tendencies they never thought they'd be rid of, all by focusing on their birth order.

Editorial Review:

To be sure, some brothers and sisters have relationships that are easy. But oh, some relationships can be fraught. Confusing, too: How can two people share the same parents and turn out to be entirely different?

Marie Brenner’s brother, Carl—yin to her yang, red state to her blue state—lived in Texas and in the apple country of Washington state, cultivating his orchards, polishing his guns, and (no doubt causing their grandfather Isidor to turn in his grave) attending church, while Marie, a world-class journalist and bestselling author, led a sophisticated life among the “New York libs” her brother loathed.

From their earliest days there was a gulf between them, well documented in testy letters and telling photos: “I am a textbook younger child . . . training as bête noir to my brother,” Brenner writes. “He’s barely six years old and has already developed the Carl Look. It’s the expression that the rabbit gets in Watership Down when it goes tharn, freezes in the light.”

After many years apart, a medical crisis pushed them back into each other’s lives. Marie temporarily abandoned her job at Vanity Fair magazine, her friends, and her husband to try to help her brother. Except that Carl fought her every step of the way. “I told you to stay away from the apple country,” he barked when she showed up. And, “Don’t tell anyone out here you’re from New York City. They’ll get the wrong idea.”

As usual, Marie—a reporter who has exposed big Tobacco scandals and Enron—irritated her brother and ignored his orders. She trained her formidable investigative skills on finding treatments to help her brother medically. And she dug into the past of the brilliant and contentious Brenner family, seeking in that complicated story a cure, too, for what ailed her relationship with Carl. If only they could find common ground, she reasoned, all would be well.

Brothers and sisters, Apples and Oranges. Marie Brenner has written an extraordinary memoir—one that is heartbreakingly honest, funny and true. It’s a book that even her brother could love.

Helpful and entertaining 5 out of 5 stars.

I was loaned this book by a mother of eleven, so I thought it might be worth reading. The book is written by three homeschooling siblings: girl age 22, boy age 16, and girl age 12. They take turns writing on the same topic. The book is filled with humorous family stories which help to illustrate the points they are making. Their father illustrated the book, so there are plenty of homespun pictures to keep your interest.

The book begins with a general overview of WHY it is important to want to have your brother or sister as your best friend. When I began reading it myself, I thought, "Dull. Why doesn't this book move faster?" But, as I have been reading it aloud to my kids, I see that it moves just fast enough to convict, but not so fast to overwhelm.

The book continues with talking about how doing big things for God requires us to begin by doing "little things" for our siblings, how different people view the world differently, and covers the topics of forgiveness, humility, birth order, praising one another, and truly building friendships. It's a logical progression with more and more practical ideas as the book goes on.

The book is geared for a Christian audience, although not necessarily a homeschool one. It makes a great read aloud as you can read a whole chapter (long) or one of the three sections (shorter) or even part of the shorter sections each day. There are plenty of useful lists which you can read aloud to your children to help them to remember what it is that a servant would do, etc.

Once I finished reading my borrowed copy, I got online and ordered my own! I have seen changes in my children since we started the book, but it's not been a magic wand. Sigh. I wish I could get one of those from Amazon...

Editorial Review:

Brothers and sisters are among the most important people in life. The emphasis of this book is not merely "getting along" but being best friends.

This is a cute little book. The pictures of the animals are precious and the sayings are inspiring. I need to purchase more for my other sisters ;0).

Editorial Review:

Sisters are wonderful, and sisters are terrible. Depending on the day, the mood, the weather, or the time of day, a sister can be a companion, an adversary, an enemy, or a soulmate. But no matter what, a sister is always a best friend, and the combination of animal photos and quotes in this delightful gift book celebrate the unique duality of sisterhood.

Meeting the Challenges of Twins 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

"Raising Emotionally Healthy Twins" fills the space earlier reserved exclusively for Dr. Spock, except that
it defines the understanding necessary to cope with the thrills, worries and trials attached to a 'two fer.'
Dr. Friedman has written what I deem to be the ultimate guide to the healthy development of twins - one that speaks from the heart as well as the mind. This is a book which needs to be read by every twin parent.

Miriam Harris, Ph.D.

Editorial Review:

Most parents try to treat their twins as individuals, but most unwittingly undermine their best intentions because they lack a practical set of guidelines for raising emotionally healthy multiples. Drawing on her unique experience as a twin, the mother of twins, and as a psychotherapist, Dr. Joan A. Friedman outlines the seven key concepts for helping twins develop into self-realized, unique individuals and offers parents specific strategies for each stage in their children’s growth. From how to set up the nursery to handling playdates and extracurricular activities, from deciding on same or separate classroom education to encouraging grandparents and other family members to think beyond the pair to see individuals, Emotionally Healthy Twins will become the standard reference for parenting twins.

Giving me a heads up 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After reading through the other reviews on this book, I had to chime in to say that I think they are ALL right. This book IS a sanity saver for moms of twins who need to know that someone has gone through what they are going through. This book IS NOT a parenting handbook. Elizabeth is not a doctor or child development specialist, nor does she claim to be. If you are looking for specific instructions on how to raise your multiple children, you should look elsewhere (and good luck finding it!).

For me, this book was exactly what I was looking for. At this point, I don't want more "experts" telling me how to raise my kids. Reading this book makes me feel like I am talking to a friend who is telling me what life was like with her twins and the problems she ran into. The book has given me a heads up to problems that I might be facing in the future, and when I do encounter a particularly perplexing problem with my boys, I know I can look in this book to get someone else's perspective. The book is funny, an easy read, and highly recommended. This is one of those books that I WON'T pass my copy on to other mothers' of twins - it is too valuable to me, so they will just have to get their own!

Editorial Review:

Elizabeth Lyons and her “multiples” sorority of moms and twins come to the rescue again in this hilarious, strategy-filled, tell-it-like-it-is guide to the toddler years with twins. From managing tantrums times two in Aisle 9, to the need for large quantities of antibacterial hand sanitizer and ketchup, to the perils of potty training twins, the approaches contained within Ready or Not . . . There We Go! will keep parents two steps ahead of their newly mobile charges. It’s the resource no parent of twin toddlers should be without.

Elizabeth's wildly popular first book, Ready or Not... Here We Come! is also available from Amazon.com

Editorial Review:

Most mothers and fathers are surprised at how different parenthood feels when the second child arrives. Even before the birth, a host of new questions arises: can you possibly love a second child as much as the first? Is it better to have them close in age or farther apart? What about sibling rivalry?

In From One Child to Two, Judy Dunn gives parents all the information, emotional support, and reassurance they need to handle the stress -- and relish the joys -- of raising two children. An internationally recognized expert in the field of sibling relations, Dunn draws on her own decade-long study of siblings at home, as well as from extensive interviews and observations of parents and children.
-- How the second pregnancy differs from the first
-- How and when to break the news to the first child
-- How to manage the days surrounding the birth, the hospital visit, and the crucial first month
-- Being prepared for your firstborn's reaction to the new sibling by age group -- toddlers, preschoolers, or children in early elementary school
-- How to cope with the new demands on your marriage
-- The major milestones that families face together -- the changing role of fathers and grandparents, managing new schedules, and coping with parental burnout
-- Sibling rivalry: what to do about fighting, when to intervene, and when it's supposed to get better!

Whether you're contemplating a second child, expecting one any day, or trying to cope with the changing dynamics of your newly expanded family, From One Child to Two is an indispensable guide. Filled with common sense, down-to-earth, and eminently practical advice, this is the one parenting book that you will refer to again and again.

Reassuring, practical AND witty 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Twinspiration is a fantastic book for individuals looking for a personal and pragmatic approach to managing the birth and care of twins. Ms. Lage has written from the heart about her own experiences as a mother of twins and offers guidance resulting from those experiences. Her book is packed with relevant information about how to prepare for twins (from pregnancy to what you'll need before you bring them home), how to manage the needs of two babies simultaneously and how to manage your life post twin birth. She leaves no stone unturned. The majority of the book addresses the nitty-gritty reality of having twins at home. Some examples include: holding and feeding two babies at one time, coping when both infants need you at once, managing two baby carriers, grocery shopping and maneuvering a double stroller. Believe me, these are things that will matter, particularly if you've never had children before. She also thoroughly addresses concerns, considerations and other practical matters during pregnancy.
When you read Twinspiration, expect a book that will prepare, encourage, reassure and make you laugh. I found it to be invaluable.

Editorial Review:

Twinspiration combines guidebook how-to with personal diary to lead mothers through pregnancy and the first year of their twins' lives. This carefully laid out book provides an array of information from the basics to the questions you are too afraid to ask with humor and honesty. This is the must have all in one resource for any couple that is expecting twins.
