A terrible disappointment! 1 out of 5 stars.
47 of 58 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book, hoping for good guidance to help my son, an early reader. After having read the book carefully, I have to say that much of the book is useless. The reasons:

(1) The first 5 chapters of the book cover emotional and intellectual development traits of "gifted" kids, and I suspect these chapters are aimed at parents who are looking for affirmation that their kids are little geniuses. Only the last three chapters (6,7,8) talk about books. Chapters 6 and 7 cover all areas of literature that gifted children may find interesting, but the coverage offers no real depth. It is as if the author scans the Internet to see who-is-who in, say, science fiction, then lists a few of those names without actually reading their work. Surely noone can argue with the inclusion of such names, but *why* those authors will be good
for gifted kids is not discussed.

(2)The bibliography section (chapter 8) contains books that are appropriate for average children, not early gifted readers. For example, it lists books in the grade 3-5 that my own son read when he was in 1st grade.

(3)If, as a parent or teacher, you think you might have a truly gifted readers in your hand, then you probably would not want to wait until the kid is in 6th grade or older to offer some guidance, would you? So why this author does not emphasize books in the early years, and spends a good chunk of her book describing what to offer 6th graders and older kids is beyond me

(4)The bibliography section mentions very few books in the area of science or mathematics. It is as if the only books that can possible excite a kid's imagination in the non fiction world are biographies, map books, psychology self-help guides, or books on historical inventions. I wonder what would happen if Reid Barton's parents had read this book and followed its advice.

My suggestion? remove the word "Gifted" from the title...

Small but Powerful 4 out of 5 stars.
57 of 59 people found this review helpful.

This is a short little book, but has a powerful message. Children need to experience our environment first hand in order to appreciate it. Once they learn to appreciate it, they will want to preserve it. Plus kids do not get enough outdoor time these days. It also provides excellent reference of books for all aged children on the environment. A must read for teachers and anyone who has an impact on our youth and environment, which should be everyone.

*A CLASSIC FOR YOUR LIBRARY AND MINE* 5 out of 5 stars.

I have worked with youth as an environmental educator, horticultural therapist, and counselor. I've done quite a bit of reading by authors from various disciplines, and I believe that this book is truly one-of-a-kind. Sobel's developmental theory is sound, and his writing is clear and concise. I have encouraged many of my colleagues to read it, and I feel that it is becoming well-known among environmental educators. This book has the potential to make an excellent contribution to educators and therapists, especially for those of us striving to connect children with the environment. Parents and families would also benefit from this book, as it explains which types of experiences with nature are most likely to have a positive influence on the child based on his or her developmental level. This book has been referenced by several other excellent authors, including Richard Louv (2006). Add this book to your library - you will not regret it!

Editorial Review:

Beyond Ecophobia speaks to teachers, parents, and others interested in nurturing in children the ability to understand and care for nature. This expanded version of one of Orion Magazine's most popular articles includes descriptions of developmentally appropriate environmental education activities and a list of related children's books.

Editorial Review:

The much-loved tale read by generations of children, now annotated and with over one hundred stunning illustrations.

Frances Hodgson Burnett was famous in her time for her adult novels and her forays into children's literature with Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess. The Secret Garden, her story of an orphan girl who moves from India to the British countryside, has become a favorite book of every generation thereafter. Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina, the author of the definitive biography of Burnett, brings out aspects of Burnett's life that led her to write the book, details of the Victorian England time period, attitudes toward children, and Burnett's spiritual leanings. Gerzina captures the magical nature of the tale and the coming together of three children through restoring a hidden garden. With over one hundred illustrations, many in vibrant color, The Annotated Secret Garden is an enchanting gift for any child or for any adult who is still a feisty child underneath. 55 color and 46 black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Review:

THE MAGICIAN'S BOOK is the story of one reader's long, tumultuous relationship with C.S. Lewis'The Chronicles of Narnia. Enchanted by its fantastic world as a child, prominent critic Laura Miller returns to the series as an adult to uncover the source of these small books' mysterious power by looking at their creator, Clive Staples Lewis. What she discovers is not the familiar, idealized image of the author, but a more interesting and ambiguous truth: Lewis's tragic and troubled childhood, his unconventional love life, and his intense but ultimately doomed friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien.

Finally reclaiming Narnia "for the rest of us," Miller casts the Chronicles as a profoundly literary creation, and the portal to a life-long adventure in books, art, and the imagination.

Editorial Review:

If you are looking for a book to give to a teenage reader, here's the reference you've been waiting for. Until now, there's been no accepted guide to what's good, bad, or indifferent in the flood of books coming off the presses in the hot new category of young-adult publishing. If it's true that you can't judge a book by its cover, it is especially true for teen books, as publishers take aim at a new class of readers. The books land on shelves without a history, and so there is no standard by which to judge them.

Anita Silvey, one of the country's leading authorities on books for young people, has interviewed teenage readers all over the country and immersed herself in young-adult books, with an emphasis on books published in the last five years. The result is this invaluable and very readable guide for parents, teachers, librarians, booksellers, reading groups, and of course teens themselves.

With its extended essays describing 500 selections, parents will quickly see what their teenagers are actually reading -- and will be able to find good books to introduce them to. Teachers can spot excellent additions to summer reading lists. Booksellers can move customers from one favorite to a host of others in the same genre. Librarians can round out collections. Book groups -- for adults, teens, or both -- will have hundreds of new titles to consider.

500 Great Books for Teens is divided into twenty-one sections, including adventure and survival, politics and social history, horror, romance, war and conflict, fantasy, plays, graphic novels, poetry, memoir, and spirituality. Every section offers up classics, but the majority of titles are new. In "Beyond the 500," Silvey compiles a number of useful lists, including books organized by geographic location and historical period, as well as recommended audio books.

We All Love This Book At My House 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I got this book for my birthday, and then found out that I am not the only woman who has read 50 odd Nancy Drew books. . .my daughter, my students, my neighbors all confess . . . everyone loves Nancy Drew, and consequently, loves this book.

We've set up a "Detective Cabinet" with spy-glasses and flashlights so that we can solve such common dilemmas as "The Mystery of the Missing House Keys" and "The Secret of the Laundry Room", now that we've been reminded of how problems are solved in River Heights.

This book is sheer inspiration . . . a MUST read.

Editorial Review:

You couldn't have known it then, but all those hours spent reading about Nancy's adventures served you well. Nancy Drew's Guide to Life is a loving tribute to the young sleuth and the wisdom she imparted. This book is filled with practical tips, as well as seemingly whimsical (but surprisingly sound) advice. Her sage counsel is accompanied by the classic covers and artwork from her yellow-spined books.

Editorial Review:

Was Little Jack Horner a squatter? “Baa Baa Black Sheep” a bleat about taxation? What did Jack and Jill do on that hill? Who was Mary? And why was she contrary?

This witty and ingenious book delves into the hidden meanings of forty of the most innocuous- sounding nursery rhymes, uncovering a seething subtext of sexual innuendo, religious hatred, and political subversion. Heavy Words Lightly Thrown provides a fascinating history lesson, teases out some alarming Freudian interpretations, and makes astonishing connections to contemporary popular culture. Striking and spooky silhouettes of nursery rhyme characters accompany the rhymes.

You’ll never see Mother Goose in the same way again. BACKCOVER: Praise for Heavy Words Lightly Thrown:

“What makes HWLT so much fun to read is not just the wacky stories Roberts tells, but the way Roberts tells them. He has a quick, chummy wit and moves easily between the past and the present, making connections between the way people acted then and the way we act now, and sending up both.”
Orlando Sentinel

“Roberts employs a decidedly playful approach in analyzing the rhymes.”
Chicago Tribune

“Roberts deploys an informal style of scholarship to a dazzling effect, transforming a catalogue of familiar nursery rhymes into a treasure trove of tantalizingly slippery archaisms, hidden etymological layers, arcane associations and buried meanings. This is better than history lite--it's history made delightful.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“HWLT is obviously a labor of love, performed by a man obsessed with language, history, but intent on making the education of his readers a joyous experience.”
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

“a loving, in-depth look at history, the human condition, and why words and the way they are used matters so much.”
Sunday Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News

“a lighthearted, often hilarious look at the human condition and a fascinating exploration of how words can shape mythology and culture.”
Syracuse Post-Standard

) “A fascinating slice of history with quirky, unexpected and often scandalous tales.”
Providence Sunday Journal

“An intriguing & informative historical trip through those odd little songs I sang as an odd little child. A must-have for anyone who has ever been younger than they are now.”
—Angus Oblong, creator of “The Oblongs” animated series & author of Creepy Susie: And 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children

Book list and summaries of many book topics 5 out of 5 stars.
82 of 82 people found this review helpful.

This book was written as a listing of books for children, of many topics. I want to make it clear that this is not just a book list of children's fiction. There are different books on the market that list only works of fiction. This book includes lists of books for these subjects: animals, art and architecture, bible/spiritual teaching, biography, crafts, hobbies, domestic arts, dance, drama, geography, history, horticulture, humor, language, literature (in several reading levels), poetry, rhymes, math, misc. music, outdoor activities other than group games, physical education, reference, science, technology, and special days and seasons.

This book was written by a homeschooler who is using the Charlotte Mason method. The Charlotte Mason method uses real books also known as living books, (not textbooks or boxed curriculum). This method allows the individual to use many different books written by people who are passionate about the subject to learn about a particular topic or unit of study. Living books are great books, books that capture the attention or imagination of the reader. Living books are not boring or uninspiring. I appreciate having this reference guide available to me, a pre-sorted list written by a user of the Charlotte Mason method, someone on the lookout for quality and inspiring books. It helps sift out the exceptional books from the unremarkable.

OK so this was published in 1987 and any book list that is written poses the risk of immediately containing out of print books. The fact that this book is 14 years old (at the time I of this writing) adds to the possibility that some of these books will be out of print. I see that other reviewers don't like book lists that contain out of print books. I appreciate a listing that contains out of print books, because besides shopping for new books, I also shop at local used book stores, online used book store and online out of print book stores. It is helpful to know about a great book and be on the lookout for that at a used bookstore (or by simply doing an online search for that title). As a homeschooling parent, our family library is growing and I do appreciate the ability to buy used books for sometimes as low as one or two dollars, and end up with better quality book than some currently-in-print, more expensive, new book. Let's not also forget that our public libraries are full of out-of-print books, and that library used book sales are another source of finding great books that are out-of-print. In defense of the author, to further complicate matters books come in and out of print...one never knows when a previously out of print book will go back into circulation.

If you are looking for a book of children's fiction lists that deletes out of print books, see "The Read Aloud Handbook"-with each revision the author deletes the out of print books and only includes the in print books (at the time of the printing, of course).

I appreciate the detailed index, which allows easy scanning by title or author, something that not all book list-books include.

I found this interesting reading and went right through it, cover to cover, with pencil in hand to circle those that I thought our family would like to read. I also found that this book inspired me to think about introducing different topics to my children that I would not have thought about, such as studying the life of colonial American children or learning about what pioneer Americans ate for food.

A great reference book at a low cost!

Editorial Review:

Elizabeth Wilson offers us a newly revised, comprehensive guide to the very best in children's literature. Just as in the original volume, she comments on the tone and content of excellently written, captivating books in over two dozen subject areas. Hundreds of new titles have been added while retaining timeless classics and modern favorites all of which respect traditional values. So that no matter what the children's ages are or whether they love fact or fiction, you can trust these books to share things that you can believe in and kids will delight in.
