Editorial Review:

With a title like this, it's no surprise that authors Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish had a monster bestseller on their hands when the book first appeared in 1988. From the subsequent deluge of readers' stories, questions, and issues, they have created nearly 50 pages of new material for this, the 10th anniversary edition. The central message remains the same, and sounds almost too simple: avoid comparisons. But parents know that's easier said than done. The value of Faber and Mazlish's discussions is precisely that they talk you through umpteen different situations and outcomes to help you teach your brawling offspring a new set of responses. The highly informative text is punctuated with helpful summary/reminder boxes and cartoons illustrating key points. It's a must-read for parents with (or planning on) multiple children. But parents of young children who get along fine (so far) should read it too--as the authors make very clear, rivalry is inevitable. The only question is how to manage the rivalry with intelligence and compassion, and on that subject they offer a wealth of good advice. --Richard Farr

Editorial Review:

Beginning with the "10 Greatest Lies About Pregnancy" (number 10: Lamaze works), and ending with postpartum dementia, Vicki Iovine's Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy has fast become the laywoman's mouthpiece for the American pregnancy experience. Iovine is irreverent, sassy, and incredibly reassuring as she exposes the "truths" of pregnancy and childbirth, from sex to cellulite to cesareans. Iovine birthed four kids in six years, none of them twins, which certainly qualifies her as an expert. The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy does reveal Iovine's particular cultural biases (pregnant or not, most of us don't have record-producer husbands, hang out with supermodels, or wear size-four pants) and philosophical beliefs (she's not a particularly strong proponent of natural childbirth or nursing), but, taken with a grain or two of salt, she provides many hilarious moments, acres of advice, and honest reassurance readers will find nowhere else. --Ericka Lutz

Editorial Review:

Does your child speak a different language? Sometimes they wager for your attention, and other times they ignore you completely. Sometimes they are filled with gratitude and affection, and other times they seem totally indifferent. Attitude. Behavior. Development. Everything depends on the love relationship between you and your child. When children feel loved, they do their best. But how can you make sure your child feels loved? Since 1992, Dr. Gary Chapman's best-selling book The Five Love Languages has helped more than 300,000 couples develop stronger, more fulfilling relationships by teaching them to speak each others love language. Each child, too, expresses and receives love through one of five different communication styles. And your love language may be totally different from that of your child. While you are doing all you can to show your child love, he may be hearing it as something completely opposite.Discover your child's primary language and learn what you can do to effectively convey unconditional feelings of respect, affection, and commitment that will resonate in your child's emotions and behavior.

Hundreds of questions and answers treat everything from eating and sleeping problems to day care, tantrums, bottle mouth, shyness, self-esteem, and more. An entire third section of the book is devoted to toilet training, safety, and health, and a fourth covers special concerns-the exceptional child, siblings, and balancing work and parenting.

Remarkably thorough, caring and intelligent, What to Expect the Toddler Years is as valuable for the seasoned parent as it is for the new parent. 2.4 million copies in print.

LOvae and Logic Magic for Early CHildhood 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was disappointed in this his book I don't believe that this is effective parenting or that it would help a child grow up to be more responsible.
I don't believe a child should be abandoned as a form of discipline as when the author says to put them in there room and latch the door. What happen to listening to a child and having a two sided conversation with a child. This book is all about showing the child that the parent is in control. Kind of a my way or the highway form of discipline. The author suggests that "The car is leaving in ten minutes" is an enforceable statement, so if the child is not ready in 10 minutes does he leave with out his child? I think DCFS would like to hear about that. Basically, I think this form of discipline is harsh and insensitive and it is not at all the kind and gentle form of dicipline it claims to be. Nor do I think it will help a child make necessarily better decisions when they are older, but it may make them afraid to go out and explore the world.

Editorial Review:

It's Sunday after dark. Your baby is sick, hurt, or acting strangely, and the doctor won't be in until tomorrow. How can you find out what to do when your healthcare professionals are unreachable? You may only need to go as far as your bookshelf. The revised edition of Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 (the American Academy of Pediatrics' reference book for infancy through preschool), provides a wealth of authoritative child-care information in an easy-to-use format.

The first half of this hefty text serves as a comprehensive parenting manual, and includes a month-by-month guide to the first year, nutritional information, basic care instructions, and physical, emotional, and social developmental milestones for children up to 5 years old. While the American Academy of Pediatrics represents the mainstream child-rearing philosophies embraced by thousands of baby doctors, it does not reflect the entire gamut of child-rearing theory. (There's no discussion, for instance, of breast-feeding past the first year or co-sleeping.) The second half of the book includes a thorough, easy-to-navigate emergency first-aid section, plus detailed information about childhood illnesses, immunization schedules and side effects, and family structures, as well as a discussion of behavioral issues. Caring for Your Baby and Young Child is useful, sensible, and carefully researched, and makes a trustworthy addition to any parent's bookshelf. --Ericka Lutz

A Must-Have Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I recently had twins and these were our first children. There were some complications as well and the whole experience was very overwhelming. We read probably 10 or more books and nothing can compare to this book. It has the answer or explanation for every question we had. They should give this book away to all new parents at the hospital. Buy it now!

A great resource! 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Spock meets Judge Judy--finally a parenting book that separates fact from fiction. What if you could bottle the wisdom of all those parents who've come before you...and combine them with the sold medical advice from an award-winning pediatrician? Baby 411 is the answer.

Editorial Review:

Oh, the joys of pregnancy! There's the gassiness, constipation, queasiness, and exhaustion, the forgetfulness, crankiness, and the constant worry. Of course, no woman is spared the discomforts and humiliations of pregnancy, but most are too polite to complain or too embarrassed to talk about them. Not Jenny McCarthy! In the New York Times best-selling Belly Laughs, actress and new mother Jenny McCarthy reveals the naked truth about the tremendous joys, the excruciating pains, and the unseemly disfigurement that go along with pregnancy. Never shy, frequently crude, and always laugh-out-loud funny, McCarthy covers it all in the grittiest of girlfriend detail. From morning sickness and hormonal rage, to hemorrhoids, pregnant sex, and the torture and sweet relief that is delivery, Belly Laughs is must-read comic relief for anyone who is pregnant, who has ever been pregnant, is trying to get pregnant, or, indeed, has ever been born!

Jenny Frakking McCarthy wrote a Frakking Book on Frakking Autism 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this review, so in short, here are the two things that hack the rating down for me from 3.5 to 2:

* Repeated use of the F word in conversation is semi-acceptable among those you know well, but repeated use in a book on Mothering and Autism is an indicator of crudeness. There is no need to drag the culture down any further than necessary, particularly in a book on Autism and a Mother's love. (I was in the military and I can swear with the best of them, thank you.)
* Jenny McCarthy seems to think that ONLY mother's care about children with autism. Listen Blondie, just because your husband couldn't take it, and the ladies at the UCLA medical center hung out there all day long, doesn't mean that most Men don't take an active role in caring for their children's autism. I'm the one that does the majority of the active work for my son, and I take great offense at the remarks about men not being involved.

As for the rest of it? It's always enlightening to hear about another parent's struggles with Autism, but her son's condition is certainly out of the norm for most kids on the spectrum, both in terms of the original symptoms appearing after massive seizures and in the amount of money she was able to plow into treatment. I'm glad her son is doing better, but a lot of the material in this book simply isn't useful for the average parent.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times bestseller that is an inspiring “story of hope” (People) for parents of autistic children

One morning Jenny McCarthy was having a cup of coffee when she sensed something was wrong. She ran into her two-year-old son Evan’s room and found him having a seizure. Doctor after doctor misdiagnosed Evan until—after many harrowing, life-threatening episodes—one good doctor discovered that Evan is autistic.

With a foreword from Dr. David Feinberg, medical director of the Resnick Neuro-psychiatric Hospital at UCLA, and an introduction by Jerry J. Kartzinel, a top pediatric autism specialist, Louder Than Words follows Jenny as she discovered an intense combination of behavioral therapy, diet, and supplements that became the key to saving Evan from autism. Her story sheds much-needed light on autism through her own heartbreak, struggle, and ultimately hopeful example of how a parent can shape a child’s life and happiness.
