Ron Clark redefines the word hero!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Ron Clark is everything a teacher today needs to be, and more!!! Choosing to take the more difficult path and work in a tough, urban district he made magic happen with his students. My favorite part about Clark and this book is that it reminds us teachers that there are three components to learning: knowledge, skills, and values. Too often teachers become overwhelmed with preparing their students for the state exams at the end of the year that they forget the key ingredient of classroom success - good citizenship. As teachers, it is not our job to simply fill our students' minds with as much information as possible. It is our job to prepare them for the next stage of life, both academically and emotionally.

---Michael James D'Amato, author of "The Classroom"

A MUST READ! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am not done reading this book yet however, the tips are wonderful for any parent who is having troubles with their kid. Or this book is great for first time parents who want to raise their kid different from the way they were raised.

Discipline with insight 4 out of 5 stars.

I would recommend this book to parents. It helps the reader to look at how situations are promoted through our actions and word usage. The book is a bit annoying as it is outdated in word usage, a little stereotyped as to "mother", "father" roles. However, still a good read, promoting democracy and independece to our children.

Editorial Review:

Wordy, but a good reference book 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Not having read any other book specifically on breastfeedding multiples, I can only say that this book does contain useful pointers for handling multiples. The biggest drawback to the entire book is that it is wordy and when you read it, you feel like it could have been 1/2 the length. This shouldn't detract from its usefulness but it does make it necessary to sift through the repeated messages to remember the tips. Should you get it? Yes, if you're anal retentive like me and have the need to feel like you know everything there is to know about nursing twin and want to ensure that you'll succeed.

Editorial Review:

A mother of multiple babies may find herself wondering if she can produce enough milk, how to coordinate feedings, and if breastfeeding is even an option for her. The simple answer: Yes! In the third revised edition of Mothering Multiples, author Karen Kerkhoff Gromada offers valuable information with an emphasis on breastfeeding and attachment-style parenting. All aspects of caring for multiple babies are addressed, including possible complications of pregnancy, preparing for a multiple birth, coping with newborns who might need to spend time in a NICU, establishing a milk supply for multiple babies, adjusting as a couple, and caring for toddler multiples.

Huge Waste of Money 1 out of 5 stars.

I was so disappointed to open the book and find it's only a sentence on each page of "secrets". I really regret buying this book.

Waste of money!!!!!!!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was under the impression there would be stories to go with the little secrets......wrong! It took me 15 minutes to read the entire book. They should tell you there are one liners per page. Waste of my money....very disappointing........don't make the same mistake I made!

Editorial Review:

Trisha Ashworth and Amy Nobile conducted interviews with hundreds of mothers while researching their best-selling book I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids. It didn't take long before these moms began to reveal their Dirty Little Secrets—surprising, thought-provoking, guilty confessions they hadn't told anyone else. Cringe-worthy moments ("I bit my daughter's finger trying to steal a bite of her cookie.") meet real insights ("I love my kids but I didn't always. It took time to fall in love with them."). These are the private thoughts that every mom has—and every mom can relate to.

Out of date advice, but 'bang on' observations 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I remembered this series from its assitance in raising my "first litter" of kids, who are now in their mid and late twenties. I have just finished re-reading this title in honour of my four year old youngest.

I gave the book four stars rather than five because, as other reviewers have noted, the book is 30 years old and in some places it's obvious that it hasn't been updated since then. I was occasionally really surprised at the flashbacks I got in reading what was once the "gold standard" in child development advice and realizing how odd it soudns today. There are places, especially in the second half of the book, where observation gives way to opinion and advice that is a relic of its time. (TV is good, kids 'need' to be ghettoized in schools 'for their own developmental good', and a goodly dose of "girls behave this way and boys behave that way, and you can predict behavior based on body type [whaaa?!?!].)

But kids themselves don't change that much -- kids develop today much the same way they developed 30 years ago and 300 years ago. (Oh, their interests and our expectations have changed a lot, but kids and their development patterns haven't.)

So if you're a reader who can sort observation from the opinions based on those observations, I would still recommend this book as a really good primer on what to expect from your child's physical, emotional, and intellectual development over the course of the fourth year. She pegs the changes in the developing child very accurately -- even if her ideas about what that means are sometimes a little wierd.

Editorial Review:

What is it about four-year-olds that makes them  so lovable? What problems do four-year-olds have?  What can they do now that they couldn't do at  three? Drs. Ames and Ilg, recognized authorities on  child behavior and development, discuss these and  scores of other questions unique to four-year-old  girls and boys, and they offer parents practical  advice and enlightening psychological insights.

Baby Owner's Manual 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a perfect book for any new or re-newing parent. It has helped my husband I so much. It kept us from feeling so unfirmilar about our first born. It answered questions that we felt only we must have :-)... We even re-read it when our newest arrived. It is great for both Mom's and Dad's. After reading all the "Here's what to do's and what you should do books" it is nice to reference something that tells you your doing ok and so is your new little person.

Editorial Review:

The title, Baby Owner's Manual, suggests the promise and the problem of this cheeky and comprehensive guide written by a pediatrician and his son. First-time parents who are not offended by the observation that "babies, unlike other appliances, lack instruction manuals," will find a rich resource of facts and advice. The book is divided into seven categories of "operating instructions" including home installation, feeding and power supply, sleep mode, maintenance, development, and safety. Complete with witty schematic drawings and charts, the authors answer hundreds of questions about breastfeeding, bed, bath, and beyond. While most manuals focus on tender loving care, the authors chose to focus on baby as technology. The result is a highly useful--almost too cool--reference book. Because every parent knows that babies are messier and more rewarding than this approach imagines. --Barbara Mackoff

Excellent advice for parents 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is easy to read, in a friendly, conversational tone. I do not find Pantley patronizing or lecturing as a few other readers have suggested. I rather find that she comes across as "a good friend in the same boat". It works fine to read just a little at a time of this book if you are a busy parent with little time to spare for reading. I actually found myself reading it as slow as I could because I wanted it to last, and I would give myself a few days of reading other books between each chapter to reflect on what I'd learned before I moved on to the next part. I will most certainly refer to it again later.
I am a mother of three children and have used this with my 1st grader and my toddler/preschooler. And as the baby gets into toddlerhood I am sure that I will continue to use the advice from this book with all three.

Best parenting book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I dont know how to thank the author but she did a great job in this amazing book, she has mentioned almost all of the problems im facing with my 5,3 and 2 year old kids...and she knows exactly how a mother can feel and how she acts and at the same time she gives amazing ( i tried most of them) solutions..its one of the best book i have ever read and i highly recommend it to every parent.

Editorial Review:

The inspiring success of Dr. Stanley Greenspan's unique approach to autism and ASD (autistic spectrum disorders) is known to grateful parents and to professionals throughout the world. Now at last his highly effective and influential program is presented in one clear and accessible volume. A number of innovative, exciting features distinguish Greenspan's approach to autism:First, his program has demonstrated that children with signs of autism or autistic spectrum disorders do not have a fixed, limited potential, but in many cases can join their peers and lead full, healthy lives, emotionally and intellectually. Secondly, his approach can be applied at a very early stage, when signs of autism first appear. Thus, the hope of preventing the full onset of autism becomes a real possibility. Third, the approach empowers the entire family to promote their child's development throughout each day. Also, the DIR Floortime approach guides the efforts of speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and educators to work with the family and builds on the latest research on the development of the mind and brain. As cases of autism continue to rise worldwide, Dr. Greenspan's extremely successful Floortime approach is producing very promising results that could one day stem the tide against this dread disorder. No one involved in the care of children with autism, parent or professional, can afford to be without this landmark work.

Most helpful book, and I have them all!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The only one I needed. I could start my own library with all of the pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn baby book I bought. This is the only one I'll keep.

THE Pregnancy book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After starting "what to expect" and being told that it was horrible I was given this book by my midwives. It is THE book every pregnant woman should read. It does cover pregancy but not all the scare tactics that you read in the other books that make you paranoid about breathing. I found it very helpful in creating a birthing plan and knowing all the options I had. I didn't have the pregnancy I thought I would have as my sons were born prematurely and didn't survive, when it happened I knew exactly what was going on. On the other hand in "what to expect" the chart that says abdominal discomfort, you may have gas or you may be going into pre-term labor. Give me a break! So again...pregnant, thinking of being pregnant, know someone who is pregnant, this is the book!

Editorial Review:

With over one million copies in print, this is one of the best-selling books about pregnancy on the market. More complete and up-to-date than any other pregnancy guide, this remarkable book is the "bible" for childbirth educators. Now revised with:

-a greatly expanded treatment of pregnancy tests, complications, and infections

-an expanded list of drugs and medications, plus advice for uses

-a brand-new chapter on creating a detailed birth plan

Called "excellent" by the American Journal of Nursing.

Editorial Review:

From the New York Times bestselling co-author of Raising Cain, It’s a Boy! is the first major parenting book to chart every stage of a boy’s life. This upbeat, authoritative, and reassuring guide–written by psychologist Michael Thompson, Ph.D., a leading international expert on boys’ development, and journalist Teresa H. Barker–shows how a boy’s inner life progresses through infancy, childhood, and adolescence.

What do boys actually need? How exactly does a healthy boy look and act? It’s a Boy! has the answers, providing expert advice on the developmental, psychological, social, and academic life of boys from infancy through the teen years. Exploring the many ways in which boys strive for masculinity and attempt to define themselves, Dr. Thompson identifies the key developmental transitions that mark a boy’s psychological growth and emotional health, and the challenges both boys and parents face at each age.

• Expecting a Boy: how our deeply held hopes, fears, and family histories shape our expectations of boys and our parenting techniques
Baby Boys (birth to 18 months): falling in love with your son, healthy attachment, trust, and temperament
Toddler Years (18 months to 3 years): boys on the go, bold steps, blankies, budding language, and rambunctious physicality
Powerful Little Boys (ages 3 and 4): superhero ambitions, penis play and potty talk, learning to manage the force of his anger, and celebrating the power of the boy group
Starting School (ages 5 through 7): developmental cues for school readiness, transitional challenges, girl cooties and boys-only play, tough talk, tender hearts, and first friends
Boys on a Mission (ages 8 through 10): striving for mastery in sports, screen games, and boy society, organizing the boy brain for school success, and glaring academic gender gaps
The Preteen (ages 11 through 13): puberty, posturing and popularity, the culture of cruelty, hidden sensitivity, and stoic silence in the middle school years
Early High School (ages 14 and 15): the secret life of boys, powerful peer groups, sexuality, school strategies, the shift away from Mom (she knows too much), and yearning for Dad’s respect and attention
On the Brink of Manhood (ages 16 through 18): the quest for independence, sex, love, driving, drinking, and other choices and challenges of life

Practical, insightful, wonderfully engaging, and filled with instructive true stories any parent of a son will recognize, It’s a Boy! is the definitive guide to raising boys in today’s world, revealing with humor, compassion, and joy all the infinite varieties of boys and the deep and profound ways in which we love them.
