One Sided View of 3 Dimensional Topic 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be rather insulting. When writing a book based on empirical evidence, an author's personal opinions on the subject matter may be evident. However, this view point should not be of such a magnitude where the evidence presented will support only one side of a two sided argument. This book was, clearly, biased, and in a very bad way. I found it quite pretentious.

Very Educational but Can Get Boring 4 out of 5 stars.

I got this book for my home, school, and community class. So far it has been very helpful and educational, but can get a bit on the wordy side and make ya want to quit reading.

Great & Fast 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

This book describes and analyzes how a child's interaction with family, school, peer groups, media and community influences his or her developmental outcome. Professionals working with children and students studying child sociology need to understand the effects of contexts in which children develop and how multi-factors interact to affect child development.

AWFUL HORRIBLE Book - save your money 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am just starting out in my first pregnancy and am in a wonderfully happy marriage with a very intelligent and supporting husband. I am planning on having a natural home birth with family and friends readily available to help us as we adjust the first few days. I am NOT the target audience for this book. As I got through just the first few pages, my jaw was literally dropping to the floor - not only does the author use inane scare tactics (why you need to scare an already nervous first time mom is beyond me!), but she obviously has never researched alternative methods of child birth and care. Don't feel like breastfeeding? Who cares, not like anyone is going to give you an award if you do. Want to breastfeed but worried that the nurses at the hospital will feed your newborn formula without your permission? Who cares, you shouldn't bother the hospital staff too much or they will make your 'stay' miserable. Want to give birth at home? Are you CRAZY? Don't want drugs? Oh, you'll see what a stupid idea THAT was!!

Are you kidding me? I would have thought that I had just opened up the 1950's Official Manual to Good Child Birthing. I think the only thing missing is showing a pregnant woman smoking a cigarette on the cover. If you are in any way intelligent, possess basic common sense, have any interest in alternative health and alternative birthing methods for your baby, do NOT waste your hard-earned money on this trifle garbage.

Editorial Review:

Just had a baby? Lie down, rest your weary womb, and muster up a rousing cheer! (Shh! Don't wake the baby!) Now, from the author of The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy, comes the book all new moms have been waiting for, whether they know it or not. Vicki Iovine talks turkey ... and stitches, and weight loss, and depression, and sex (trying it for the first time after labor and delivery? "Inebriate and Lubricate"). Vicki--yeah, I know I'm calling her by her first name but after reading this book you'll be on a first-name basis with her, too--is funny, informative, and utterly (udderly?) irreverent. New mothers have never had it so good.

Good for research, not so much for general reading. 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

First of all, this book is not written as a general public book, it is written much more in the vein of a college graduate's analysis. Heavy discussion of the effects of video games on the semiotic domain underpin the analysis. That being said, this book is a good analysis of the effects of video games on those that play them.

If you want a general public analysis of the effects of entertainment (and video games) on people, check out Steven Johnson's "Everything Bad is Good For You." This book is a deeper analysis of part of Steven Johnson's book, so it might be best as a follow-up purchase.

My biggest complaint about James Paul Gee's book is more with the copy editor and publisher. There are so many poorly written or incorrectly written sentences that should have been caught and corrected. It really affects the perceptions about the book's research.

Editorial Review:

James Paul Gee begins his classic book with "I want to talk about video games--yes, even violent video games--and say some positive things about them." With this simple but explosive statement, one of America's most well-respected educators looks seriously at the good that can come from playing video games. In this revised edition, new games like World of WarCraft and Half Life 2 are evaluated and theories of cognitive development are expanded. Gee looks at major cognitive activities including how individuals develop a sense of identity, how we grasp meaning, how we evaluate and follow a command, pick a role model, and perceive the world.

a reader from Ohio 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

After reading many great reviews I purchased this book thinking it would be a useful resource for games and activities for my children. I was greatly disappointed. Almost every activity is the same, just a different variation. Most require yet another trip to a store to buy some plastic "toys" If a parent already had what the author has listed as a "well-stocked" toy room they should have no problem thinking up the games listed in this book. For any parent or caregiver with even the slightest bit of imagination this book is unnecessary. In place of this I would recommend Playful Learning from Le Leche League or any book from Bev Bos. They require more imagination and less trips to a store.

Editorial Review:

From the joy of smearing glue on paper to the screaming delight of a bubble-blowing relay, kids love to play. In fact, it's every kid's built-in tool for experiencing the world at large. A parent-friendly encyclopedia, UNPLUGGED PLAY ("A wonderful guide," says Daniel Goleman) offers hundreds and hundredsof battery-free, screen-free, chrip-and-beep-free games and fun variations that stretch the imagination, spark creativity, building strong bodies, and forge deep friendships...and keep kids busy at the table while mom or dad makes dinner.

Editorial Review:

Parents are facing the toughest challenge of their lives. They want to create a loving family environment filled with mutual respect and cooperation… but they find instead that human nature and the influence of our culture combine to produce an atmosphere of anxiety, exhaustion, and far too much screaming. Perhaps you can relate!

Whether you scream at your children or not, you no doubt feel anxious about them and their choices. You worry how they’ll turn out. Unfortunately for parents, many of the techniques some experts present only seem to make matters worse. Hal Edward Runkel has discovered why: Parents are spending far too much time orbiting their lives around their children. They need to return the focus to themselves. They need to grow up and calm down.

ScreamFree Parenting is about taming your reactive responses to your deep anxiety. Rather than learning new techniques, you’ll discover the liberating principles, based on scriptural truths, that are inspiring parents just like you to revolutionize their family life. Principles that will enable you to remain cool, calm, and connected with your children, no matter what.

Learn how to parent less out of your deepest fears and more out of the highest principles in ScreamFree Parenting.

Editorial Review:

Child Development brings the research to life through stories. What prompted researcher Virginia Apgar to develop what became the Apgar Test on newborns? Who knew that psychologist Eleanor Gibson' famous "visual cliff" experiment was inspired by her own toddler's experience of hesitation in approaching the edge of the Grand Canyon? These stories help students appreciate the relevance of theory, helping them internalize research-intensive material. Through integrating such stories, this text provides the scientific rigor of Berk's child development books from Allyn & Bacon with the accessibility of Worth's Berger.

Good reminder, but lacking in some areas 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I would like to commend Dr. Meeker for writing a book focused on improving Fatherhood. Too often fathers forget their influence in raising a strong daughter.

This book gave me a key insight: Take a Stand for your Daughter(s). Most of Dr. Meeker's advice centers around this insight. It is crucial to believe in your daughter and stand up for her morals and virtues.

This book was a good reminder but I found it lacking in a few areas. Most notable was how to drive long-term change. The lessons are insightful but they don't drive a substantial change in a Father's way of Being. Too often we remember a lesson but don't change.

I struggled with Dr. Meeker's data on Faith and Divorce. The common misperception is to take the initial data that stronger father's are married and have faith in God. There is ample evidence to show that the key is to have parents that have strong morals, virtues and a belief in their daughter's potential. This does not require Faith in a single God or a couple that is married.

Having a strong family unit with a father and mother in the same household is important. Again, I differ with Dr. Meeker's opinion that you should stay together for the sake of the children. Your children are intuitive humans and will feel your intentions. Staying together but spiting each other and not communicating will also be detrimental. A commitment to your wife is required for a successful marriage that shows the benefits of a strong marriage.

Overall a good reminder for Fathers on their strong influence on their daughter's perception of men. Strong evidence shows this to be true, and I can attest from my experience with my daughters. My recommendation is to read this book but consider enhancing with stronger changes in your Being, for example reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle or Seven Habits by Covey.

Editorial Review:

Using the best medical research, experience from her own practice, and numerous interviews, Dr. Meeker shows why Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters is not a slogan-it's a necessity.

Hands-on strategies for teaching your disorganized child how to organize for school success!

The overstuffed backpack, the missing homework, the unused planner, the test he didn't know about. Sound familiar? When the disorganized child meets the departmentalized structure of middle school, everything can fall apart. Even the academically successful child will start to falter if she misses deadlines, loses textbooks, or can't get to class on time.

This practical book is full of hands-on strategies for helping parents identify and teach organizational skills. Educational consultant Donna Goldberg has developed these methods by working with hundreds of students and in this book she provides:

  • Assessments to gather information about your child's learning style, study habits, and school requirements

  • Guidelines for taming that overstuffed binder and keeping it under control

  • PACK -- a four-step plan for purging and reassembling a backpack or locker

  • Instructions for organizing an at-home work space for the child who studies at a desk or the child who studies all over the house

  • Ways to help your child graduate from telling time to managing time

  • Special tips for kids with learning disabilities and kids who have two homes...and more

The Organized Student is a must for any parent who has heard the words, "I can't find my homework!"
