Not what I was looking for 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I wanted a book that would give my child tools to live in this world. However, this book talks about how to make this world conform to my child. What happens when my child is in an stimulating environment and Mom is not around? I was looking for - wear earplugs while doing homework - something practical I can use. I can't always make my other two children be quiet for long periods. This world is a distraction; my child must cope with reality.. somehow or not be successful in accomplishing his hopes and dreams.

Editorial Review:

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition affecting at least one in twenty children who experience sensations in taste, touch, sound, sight, smell, movement, and body awareness in a vastly different manner from how other children their ages do. What may be typical activities for most kids are a daily struggle that may result in social, emotional, or academic problems.

Dr. Lucy Jane Miller, the best-known SPD researcher in the world, brings together a lifetime of study to teach parents and others the signs and symptoms of SPD and its four major subtypes; ways the disorder is diagnosed and treated; sensory strategies for living with the condition; and methods to help SPD kids thrive.

Excellent Resource 5 out of 5 stars.

This book hits the nail right on the head. We as a society have strayed from core values that this country was founded upon. Ms. Rigby encourages us to raise our children with self discipline and self respect. Following the principles in this book will raise our children to be responsible adults.

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful and informative book. It opened my eyes to some things that I'm doing that could actually not benefit my children in the future. It's an eye-opener and inspiring for sure.

Thank you for such a well written book!

Must have for all parents! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is an excellent source of wisdom as to how to combat societies view of entitlement. It puts forth valid agruments for building self-efficacy in your child and how just worrying about their self esteem is doing more harm than good. I strongly recommend it to parents of children of all ages. But the younger you start the better!

Helpful and practical 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved this book! I agree with the reviewer who said that Rigby's chapter about self-esteem versus self-respect was worth the price of the book. It's something I never thought of before. In fact, the entire book made me think, pray, and reconsider some of the ways I'd been parenting (or non-parenting). The author is a Christian, and she's not afraid to let her faith inform her message. So, yes, she might offend people. But I admire her for her strong faith and her practical, personal and politically incorrect(!) advice.

30 Years out of Date 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The editors really need to revise this book to reflect modern times. It assumes every mom is a stay at home mom and every family has 2 heterosexual parents. The kicker was when it suggested that some moms get together with their kids and develop playgroups, and how they were starting to see it as a trend. Oh, I almost forgot about the suggestion about how moms should try putting their children in part time child care for the day to give themselves breaks. Again, this assumes every mom is a stay at home and "Father" is the primary breadwinner.

The book was a waste of money. I strongly suggest you stay away from this - at least until it gets edited for the 21st century.

Great Book to Help Get an Idea of What's Going On With Your 2 Year Old 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is not one of those "do X to solve your child's Y problem." It basically just lets you know what is going on with your 2 and 2.5 year old. The researchers observed 1000's of two year olds over several years and this book is the culmination of their research - in an easy to read format, as well. They do offer general advice - take it with a grain of salt because some of it is REALLY outdated. But the insights on what is going on, what to expect, what's "normal", and the list of toys and books appropriate for two year olds is invaluable. AND, at under 150 pages it is a quick read (since most parents of three year olds don't have much time to do so).

Most helpful book, and I have them all!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The only one I needed. I could start my own library with all of the pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn baby book I bought. This is the only one I'll keep.

THE Pregnancy book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After starting "what to expect" and being told that it was horrible I was given this book by my midwives. It is THE book every pregnant woman should read. It does cover pregancy but not all the scare tactics that you read in the other books that make you paranoid about breathing. I found it very helpful in creating a birthing plan and knowing all the options I had. I didn't have the pregnancy I thought I would have as my sons were born prematurely and didn't survive, when it happened I knew exactly what was going on. On the other hand in "what to expect" the chart that says abdominal discomfort, you may have gas or you may be going into pre-term labor. Give me a break! So again...pregnant, thinking of being pregnant, know someone who is pregnant, this is the book!

Editorial Review:

With over one million copies in print, this is one of the best-selling books about pregnancy on the market. More complete and up-to-date than any other pregnancy guide, this remarkable book is the "bible" for childbirth educators. Now revised with:

-a greatly expanded treatment of pregnancy tests, complications, and infections

-an expanded list of drugs and medications, plus advice for uses

-a brand-new chapter on creating a detailed birth plan

Called "excellent" by the American Journal of Nursing.

Help for moms with babies and toddlers 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Great combination of books - I got them for my daughters, one who is pregnant and one with a 6 month old. Well written with easy to read language. Good for husband/father to read, also! Answers simple questions (when do teeth start coming in, and which ones first?), to more problematic ones (she is still throwing up, what should I do?). Good reference to have on hand.Baby and Toddler 411 Gift Set

This is a great gift. My wife purchased this for us, and it has tons of useful tips. IT is a definitely quick go to book for information. It helps that the doctor is a well-known pediatrician here in Austin!

We loved the Baby Bargains book as well.

these are used like the bible in my local moms club it seems - just finished baby411, and now into toddler411 - but pages 105-128 were repeated at the expense of pages 129-152 - check your book - AMazon replaced it for me even though I ordered the set 4 months ago since I only noticed the defect now - I also contacted the author when Amazon didn't want to exchange it - they were also willing to send out a new copy THAT DAY! Denise Fields rules! also try her baby bargains book before you buy anything for your child! you will save money!

Easy for a tired new Mom 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I really wanted to keep track of my babies milestones. As the new Mom of an infant there is so little time. Every night before I go to bed I can write down the days milestones. It is amazing looking back over the last few weeks how much he has grown.

Easy way to chronicle e baby's first year 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love this idea and have used it for both of my children during their first year. It is so much easier than a baby book or journal and it creates a simple way to record the little but important things every day both as a reference for the next child and as a cherished treasure to look back upon when they're older. We like this one because of the stickers and classic theme, but wish it had a place to put photos of the child during each month.

Editorial Review:

What could be sweeter than the gentle words and watercolors of GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU to illustrate each month of a newborn's life? With 49 stickers to mark such important events as baby's first smile, first tooth, first laugh, or first step, this is a charming and convenient way to keep a record of a baby's ever-changing first year.

Editorial Review:

The first edition of Positive Discipline A-Z became a classic child-rearing text that helped change the way parents and experts feel about discipline. In this revised and expanded version, child psychologist Jane Nelson (coauthor of the entire Positive Discipline series) teams up with speaker and therapist Lynn Lott and H. Stephen Glenn (Raising Self-Reliant Children). Positive Discipline is based on the theories of child development expert Rudolf Dreikurs, and uses communication, consistency, and specific techniques (such as the four-step follow-through method, taking time for training, giving age-appropriate chores to teach responsibility, and using positive time-outs in which the child takes some time with a calming activity) to help children develop the life skills they need to be "effective, happy, contributing, and respectful members of the family and society."

The first part of the text provides an introduction to the concept of positive discipline and its tools. The second part of the book is an alphabetical breakdown of more than 100 child-rearing topics, from addiction to zits--including cruelty to animals, fairness, laundry, negative children, pampering, self-esteem, tattling, whining, and much more. Here, the authors move from general theory to specific suggestions and approaches for hard-core parenting issues. Whether read for theory or read for specificity, this book is terrific--and important. --Ericka Lutz

Editorial Review:

The moment the second line on the pee stick turns pink, women discover they've entered a world of parenting experts.

Friends, family, colleagues, the UPS delivery guy -- suddenly everybody is a trove of advice, much of it contradictory and confusing. With dire warnings of what will happen if baby is fed on demand and even direr warnings of what will happen if he isn't, not to mention hordes of militant "lactivists," cosleeping advocates, and books on what to worry about next, modern parenthood can seem like a minefield.

In busy Mom-friendly short essays, Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay delivers the empathetic straight dirt on parenting, tackling everything from Mommy & Me classes ("Your baby doesn't need to be making friends at three months old -- you do! But not with people you'll meet at Mommy & Me") to attachment parenting ("If you're holding your baby 24/7, that's not a baby, that's a tumor"). Stefanie Wilder-Taylor combines practical tips with sidesplitting humor and refreshing honesty, assuring women that they can be good mothers and responsibly make their own choices. A witty and welcome antidote to trendy parenting texts and scarifying case studies, Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay provides genuine support, encouragement, and indispensable common-sense advice.
