Marvelous Mush and Bountiful Benefits! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was purchase don a military bas ein Germany when my son was just born. In it were MARVELLOUS recipes my entire family loved. The best one is a fried rice recipe that my son would gobble up in a heartbeat.

The truth is we all mean well, but some kid tested recipes with the British's sense of amazing helathy eating (don't laugh they have gotten up there) is an amazing combination. I HIGHLY reccomend this as the only book on this topic you will ever need.. and now my son is four.. and I still make recipes for him.. and several for me!!!!

They even have eating plans, menus and definitions you cna really use. For both the first time and experienced mothers and child care professionals.

Editorial Review:

More than a cookbook, this indispensable kitchen companion not only offers delicious recipes for every day of the year, but also contains a wealth of information on child nutrition—from weaning and introducing solids to packing lunches and serving up party foods for older children. It emphasizes an easy approach to food preparation, with no complicated measurements or methods. Most important of all, there’s a wide variety of recipes for every stage of childhood development, complete with 50 "first food" recipes, 7-day meal planners, and sound snack ideas. Practical tips accompany the dishes, including methods for promoting healthy eating habits that support brain development and a strong immune system.

Good reminder, but lacking in some areas 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I would like to commend Dr. Meeker for writing a book focused on improving Fatherhood. Too often fathers forget their influence in raising a strong daughter.

This book gave me a key insight: Take a Stand for your Daughter(s). Most of Dr. Meeker's advice centers around this insight. It is crucial to believe in your daughter and stand up for her morals and virtues.

This book was a good reminder but I found it lacking in a few areas. Most notable was how to drive long-term change. The lessons are insightful but they don't drive a substantial change in a Father's way of Being. Too often we remember a lesson but don't change.

I struggled with Dr. Meeker's data on Faith and Divorce. The common misperception is to take the initial data that stronger father's are married and have faith in God. There is ample evidence to show that the key is to have parents that have strong morals, virtues and a belief in their daughter's potential. This does not require Faith in a single God or a couple that is married.

Having a strong family unit with a father and mother in the same household is important. Again, I differ with Dr. Meeker's opinion that you should stay together for the sake of the children. Your children are intuitive humans and will feel your intentions. Staying together but spiting each other and not communicating will also be detrimental. A commitment to your wife is required for a successful marriage that shows the benefits of a strong marriage.

Overall a good reminder for Fathers on their strong influence on their daughter's perception of men. Strong evidence shows this to be true, and I can attest from my experience with my daughters. My recommendation is to read this book but consider enhancing with stronger changes in your Being, for example reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle or Seven Habits by Covey.

Editorial Review:

Using the best medical research, experience from her own practice, and numerous interviews, Dr. Meeker shows why Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters is not a slogan-it's a necessity.

A guide to infant/toddler educaring 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Janet Gonzalez-Mena and Dianne Widmeyer Eyer have developed a precise method of working with groups of infants and toddlers based on the relationship principle. Their philosophy is one of respect for the child. I have recommended this book to many new educarers and they all have thanked me, saying it was the best guide they had come across. It is a "must read" for all who work with infants and toddlers in group care as well as for the parents of those children.

Editorial Review:

Combining a child-centered philosophy with problem-solving strategies and a thorough discussion of diversity, Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers offers an ideal introduction to curriculum and care for infants and toddlers. The approach to caregiving that underlies the text is based on a combination of Magda Gerber’s philosophy and that of her late colleague, Emmi Pikler: both pioneers taught caregivers how to respect young children and stressed the need to integrate (1) concepts of child development with caregiving, (2) knowledge of play as curriculum, (3) the physical and social environment, and (4) adult relations. Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers applies this approach in a practical, meaningful way for students and faculty in introductory early childhood courses.

Editorial Review:

Motherhood -- it's not for wimps.

Once the zigzagging hormones and endless, bleary-eyed exhaustion of the first year have worn off, you're left with the startling realization that your tiny, immobile bundle has become a rampaging toddler, complete with his or her very own, very forceful personality.

Just as Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay helped debunk decades of parenting myths to offer honest advice for the first year, Naptime Is the New Happy Hour is a voice of reason for every woman facing questions such as: Will refined sugar make my toddler's head explode? Is it wrong to have a cocktail at two in the afternoon? And what exactly is a Backyardigan?

With biting wit and boatloads of common sense, Stefanie Wilder-Taylor addresses all these concerns and more. Whether it's planning easy outings that are fun for both of you (fact: your child will find the local Target just as scintillating as the Guggenheim), dishing the dirt on preschool TV (those mothers who swear their kids don't watch television? Liars or psychos, every one), or perfecting the art of the play date, readers will find advice, anecdotes, and a reassuring sense of camaraderie to help them survive -- and even thrive -- during each hilarious, frustrating, and amazing moment.

A classic and food for thought 5 out of 5 stars.
69 of 79 people found this review helpful.

Read it just because it's a classic or read it because it has interesting things to say for today. Read it because it's so well written. The narrative just flows, and before you know it you've absorbed some pretty important concepts.

Erikson addresses nothing less than the role of psychology in the world, and the role of childhood in our social worlds. It's a combination of the clinical, the social, and the developmental, a combination of psychology and history. Case studies are presented and large themes are addressed.

"...we are also forced to recognize a universal blind spot in the makers and interpreters of history," writes Erikson, "... they ignore the fateful function of childhood in the fabric of society" (p. 404).

Whether or not you agree with all Erikson says, you will find it food for thought.

Don't worry, You are only having an 'Identity- crisis'. 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book published in 1950 was Erikson's breakthrough book, the first one by which he became known to a wide popular audience. Certain of the ideas formulated in this book have become part of the language of our general culture, most notably the concept of 'identity- crisis'.
At the heart of the theoretical framework of this work is Erikson's conception of eight- stages of life.
The first of these stages he calls the 'oral- sensory'.It involves the conflict between basic trust and mistrust.
The second is called the muscular- anal involving the confluct between Autonomy and Shame and Doubt.
The third is the Locomotor Genital involving the conflict between Initiative and Guilt.
The fourth is the Latent involving the conflict between Industry and Inferiority.
The fifth is Adolescence where the Identity- Crisis comes into play at a time of Role- confusion.
The sixth is Young Adulthood in which Intimacy is in conflict with Isolation.
The seventh is Adulthood where Generativity conflicts with Stagnation.
The final is 'Maturity' or "Old Age' where Despair threatens Ego Integrity.
In this work Erikson brings case - history, comparitive anthropological data in showing how the human personality is transformed during the person's lifetime also through its encounters with Society . A pioneering work of great importance.

Editorial Review:

Imagine infants free from painful diaper rash, new parenthood without thousands of dollars wasted in diapering costs, toilet training that is natural and noncoercive, and, most important, happier babies and parents

As Christine Gross-Loh reveals in her progressive, enlightening book, all this is possible and more. Infants are born with the ability to communicate their need to "go," just as they communicate hunger or sleepiness. Gross-Loh, a mother of two children who were diaper-free at eighteen and fifteen months, uses the tenets of "elimination communication," or EC, to teach parents how to identify and respond to their baby or toddler's natural cues.

Unlike the all-or-nothing approach of some parenting books, The Diaper-Free Baby addresses three categories of parents: full-time, part-time, and occasional EC'ers. Parents can practice EC as much or as little as fits their family and lifestyle. A support group within a book, The Diaper-Free Baby also includes inspiring testimonials throughout every chapter. Parents who have successfully practiced EC identify common struggles, share experiences and problem-solving tips, and provide encouragement for those new to the technique. Their motivational stories together with Gross-Loh's practical advice will appeal to all parents interested in a fresh alternative to traditional toilet training.

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PROGRAM 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I do not recommend the Baby Signs program at all. As the mother of a special needs child with a delay in speech I was interested in teaching her some basic signs. The problem with the Baby Signs program is that it does not use the true American Standard Sign Language. I think the developers just decided to "make up" some signs of their own. If you are going to teach your child to sign then I think it should be done correctly so that anyone who knows sign language can understand it. I recommend the My Baby Can Talk program instead. It uses the true American Standard sign language and you can view their online video dictionary for free on their web page.

Editorial Review:

The third edition of this bestselling professional resource and textbook highlights the cultural and ethnic diversity of families in the U.S. The book is designed to be used by a broad audience of pre-service professionals and interventionists who work with families and children with disabilities from diverse backgrounds, whose customs, beliefs, and values may differ from their own. Section I introduces issues that surround working with families from diverse cultural, ethnic, and language groups and describes recommended practices for culturally competent intervention. Section II consists of nine chapters focused on different groups in America, each written by expert contributors who belong to the culture. Chapters provide up-to-date information about the history, demographics, and traditions, beliefs, and customs of each group with an emphasis on issues related to family, child rearing, and disability. The chapters also offer culture-specific insights on implications for intervention. They include case stories as well as appendixes with lists of contrasting beliefs, values, and practices; cultural courtesies and customs; significant cultural events/holidays/practices; and sample vocabulary. The last section of the book offers a summary and synthesis of the discussion and makes recommendations for professionals and the systems in which they work. There is an appendix of suggested readings and resources that has been expanded to include more books, films, theater, and other media.
