child development book by Santock 3 out of 5 stars.

I needed this for my psychology class and the price was fair. I was disappointed though, b/c in the description it said no highlighting and there was moderate highlighting in the book. The main reason I had bought this particular one was b/c the seller had said in the description "no highlighting".

Don't let anyone, including your doctor, tell you that it's fine to let your infant remain in a raging cry for hours on end, else you risk raising them as "spoiled." This book puts that argument to rest. Read it, and understand that, from the moment of birth, our life is about seeking the completely effortless bond we had with our mother prior to being dropped into vertical, competitive civilization. Should be required reading for every parent on earth.

Amazing.. I've lost sleep over this book 5 out of 5 stars.

even though I carried my second child everywhere with me, I still have lost sleep over this book.. I am stunned how we are all so conditioned & condition our children in this world. I was slightly aware of this concept before I read this book, but have now become more intrigued and fully aware of how society is blinded on raising children.
A must read for all parents, grandparents and parents to be, It will change your way of thinking forever.

Editorial Review:

Jean Liedloff, an American writer, spent two and a half years in the South American jungle living with Stone Age Indians. The experience demolished her Western preconceptions of how we should live and led her to a radically different view of what human nature really is. She offers a new understanding of how we have lost much of our natural well-being and shows us practical ways to regain it for our children and for ourselves.

Editorial Review:

How we raise our children differs greatly from society to society, with many cultures responding differently to such questions as how a parent should respond to a crying child, how often a baby should be nursed, and at what age a child should learn to sleep alone. Ethnopediatrics--the study of parents, children, and child rearing across cultures--is the subject of anthropologist Meredith F. Small's thorough and fascinating book Our Babies, Ourselves.

Small asserts that our ideas about how to raise our kids are as much a result of our culture as our biology, and that, in fact, many of the values we place on child-rearing practices are based in culture rather than biology. Small writes, "Every act by parents, every goal that molds that act, has a foundation in what is appropriate for that particular culture. In this sense, no parenting style is 'right' and no style is 'wrong.' It is appropriate or inappropriate only according to the culture." Our Babies, Ourselves is a wonderful read for anyone interested in the social sciences, and will be especially meaningful to those swept up in the wild adventure of parenting. --Ericka Lutz

Editorial Review:

A psychologist with a reputation for penetrating to the heart of complex parenting issues joins forces with a physician and bestselling author to tackle one of the most disturbing and misunderstood trends of our time -- peers replacing parents in the lives of our children.

Dr. Neufeld has dubbed this phenomenon peer orientation, which refers to the tendency of children and youth to look to their peers for direction: for a sense of right and wrong, for values, identity and codes of behaviour. But peer orientation undermines family cohesion, poisons the school atmosphere, and fosters an aggressively hostile and sexualized youth culture. It provides a powerful explanation for schoolyard bullying and youth violence; its effects are painfully evident in the context of teenage gangs and criminal activity, in tragedies such as in Littleton, Colorado; Tabor, Alberta and Victoria, B.C. It is an escalating trend that has never been adequately described or contested until Hold On to Your Kids. Once understood, it becomes self-evident -- as do the solutions.

Hold On to Your Kids will restore parenting to its natural intuitive basis and the parent-child relationship to its rightful preeminence. The concepts, principles and practical advice contained in Hold On to Your Kids will empower parents to satisfy their children’s inborn need to find direction by turning towards a source of authority, contact and warmth.

Something has changed. One can sense it, one can feel it, just not find the words for it. Children are not quite the same as we remember being. They seem less likely to take their cues from adults, less inclined to please those in charge, less afraid of getting into trouble. Parenting, too, seems to have changed. Our parents seemed more confident, more certain of themselves and had more impact on us, for better or for worse. For many, parenting does not feel natural. Adults through the ages have complained about children being less respectful of their elders and more difficult to manage than preceding generations, but could it be that this time it is for real? -- from Hold On to Your Kids

Practical Advice Makes Confident Parent 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book provides simple, straightforward advice especially helpful to new parents. Easy reference format is ideal to find solutions quickly (e.g. fever, rash, clipping nails, bath time, etc.) Most helpful are the sample schedules for infants of various ages. These schedules help the parent understand what needs to be done and when resulting in happy, well rested baby and a more confident new parent. We recommend this book to all new parents because it really works!

Editorial Review:

Laura Hunter and Jennifer Walker are on-call pediatric nurses and mothers. While answering parents' questions, they realized new parents lack the basic information needed to care for their infants. Moms and dads no longer have the advantage of grandma living next door to share her years of wisdom. They're on their own--and they need help. This simple guide addresses real-life, basic infant care needs for new moms and dads. Topics range from feedings and bedtime routines to common medical questions. The included instructional DVD gives parents visual step-by-step demonstrations of how to care for a newborn to six-month-old.

Dissapointing - Not Enough Actual Info 2 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I absolutely loved Ezzo's Baby Wise book... have used the method with both my boys with wonderful results. So when it came to potty training, I naturally gravitated to this book. However I have come away severely dissapointed.

The book appeared to me to be filled with a lot of fluff and repeating the same things over and over again. It appears to me that this book was just kind of thrown together and put out there to capitalize on the success of Baby Wise.

For example, a full 1/3rd of the book (starting on page 99 and following) has nothing what-so-ever to do with potty training. A large section of it is all about getting your household on a schedule. Which I'm sure is wonderful information, if that's what you're trying to do -- but I bought this book for potty training. Then the rest is about other products in the Ezzo line... followed by blank pages. It appears to me that this whole section has been added in an effort to "plump up" the book to make it look like it has more to say.

Only page 43-61 is actually about the how-to of potty training. They start by mentioning three potential methods... and then follow up by giving you the specifics of only one of those three. The method they state basically appears to be copying the "potty training in one day method using a doll" (such as the Potty Scotty method that's gained such recognition on the Dr. Phil show). If I had skimmed this book in an actual store, I would have quickly been able to see that it didn't have very much useful information at all.

(I do want to clarify that they don't mention the actual Potty Scotty doll... they suggest you can use a bear or Raggity Ann doll or a generic drink and wet doll.)

Again, I do highly recommend Baby Wise... just not this one.

Excellent, Common-Sense Solution to Sleep Problems 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love this book. It's perfect for parents who can tolerate some crying. It's highly effective, highly practical and allows you to comfort your child when you feel it's necessary...this book rocks.

Editorial Review:

Right after "Is it a boy or a girl?" and "What's his/her name?," the next question people invariably ask new parents is "Are you getting any sleep?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually "Not much." In fact, studies show that approximately 25% of young children experience some type of sleep problem and, as any bleary-eyed parent will attest, it is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting.

Drawing on her ten years of experience in the assessment and treatment of common sleep problems in children, Dr. Jodi A. Mindell now provides tips and techniques, the answers to commonly asked questions, and case studies and quotes from parents who have successfully solved their children's sleep problems.

Unlike other books on the subject, Dr. Mindell also offers practical tips on bedtime, rather than middle-of-the-night-sleep training, and shows how all members of the family can cope with the stresses associated with teaching a child to sleep.

Editorial Review:

Stanley Greenspan, internationally known for his work with infants, young children, and their families, and his colleague, nationally recognized child psychologist Serena Wieder, have for the first time integrated their award-winning research and clinical experience into a definitive guide to raising children with special needs. In this essential work they lay out a complete, step-by-step approach for parents, educators, and others who work with developmental problems. Covering all kinds of disabilities—including autism, PPD, language and speech problems, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and ADD—the authors offer a new understanding of the nature of these challenges and also specific ways of helping children extend their intellectual and emotional potential. The authors first show how to move beyond labels to observe the unique profile—strengths and problems—of the individual child. Next, they demonstrate the techniques necessary to help the child not only reach key milestones but also develop new emotional and intellectual capacities. Greenspan’s well-known ”floortime” approach enables parents, as well as clinicians, to use seemingly playful interactions that help children actually move up the development ladder and often master creative and abstract thinking formerly thought beyond their reach. Including vivid case histories, the book also offers deep and compassionate understanding of the stresses and rewards involved in raising a child with special needs.whose amazing work with autistic and other special needs children is nationally known, and his colleague, child psychologist Serena Wieder, have integrated a lifetime of research and clinical practice into a single, comprehensive guide for parents. Covering all kinds of disabilities—including cerebral palsy, autism, retardation, ADD, PDD, and language problems—the book offers specific ways of helping all children reach their full intellectual and emotional potential.First the authors show how to move beyond the label and observe the strengths and problems of the particular child and the key milestones that must be reached. Next, they move step by step through the techniques necessary to help the child reach these milestones and show how to tailor these to each child. Finally, with a deep and compassionate understanding they outline the marital, educational, and social stresses and rewards in raising a special needs child.

Culturally Complicated, But Brilliant 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Rogoff's acclaimed concepts about how human development and culture naturally intertwine unfold in a highly intricate matter within this text.

Like Jerome Bruner, her prose can overpopulate itself with too many techy terms for the average educator; however, if you can push through the woods of her thick style, you will uncover many truths about culture.

As she puts forth, culture springs from the natural progression of social history and interaction. Each culture possesses its own scripts and nuances on what exists as "typical" development.

I invite anyone to delve into her mind.

Editorial Review:

Three-year-old Kwara'ae children in Oceania act as caregivers of their younger siblings, but in the UK, it is an offense to leave a child under age 14 ears without adult supervision. In the Efe community in Zaire, infants routinely use machetes with safety and some skill, although U.S. middle-class adults often do not trust young children with knives. What explains these marked differences in the capabilities of these children?
Until recently, traditional understandings of human development held that a child's development is universal and that children have characteristics and skills that develop independently of cultural processes. Barbara Rogoff argues, however, that human development must be understood as a cultural process, not simply a biological or psychological one. Individuals develop as members of a community, and their development can only be fully understood by examining the practices and circumstances of their communities.
